Hebridean Hopscotch – Information for cyclists to selfplan incoming and return journeys. The purpose of this information leaflet is to help you decide on the best way to organise your travel, so that you can enjoy a Hebridean Hopscotch cycling holiday in the Outer Hebrides. From a logistical point of view, we don’t believe you can beat taking a Hebridean Hopscotch Holidays itinerary with included bike hire. We arrange all your accommodation and ferries along the way (island flights if you wish, too), so when you reach your finish point, just leave your bike behind and travel home. We have provided internet web addresses and telephone numbers at the end of this article, to assist you in further research. A: Easy ways to do it – using our ‘endtoend’ hire bikes. Easy way 1: Travel from your home by car, by air, or by other public transport to Glasgow Airport, where you can hop onto a Flybe flight to Stornoway or Barra, enjoy the holiday then fly back to Glasgow for the airport at your holiday end point. Advantages: You get to land on or take off from the beach airport in Barra – a fantastic experience. It’s the fastest way to get here and to return after your holiday. Disadvantages: It may cost a little more than travelling by ferry, but you may not require enroute accommodation and that could cancel out the extra cost. Easy way 2: Travel from your home by car, by air, or by other public transport to Glasgow. If travelling by car, you may consider that Glasgow Airport is a sensible, secure place to park the car for a week or so. Then travel by train/and/or coach to catch your ferry to the islands in Ullapool or Oban. As above, we’ll have a hire bike waiting for you at your accommodation and you can easily travel back to Glasgow from your holiday finish point., where you can hop onto a Flybe flight to Stornoway or Barra, enjoy the holiday then fly back to Glasgow for the airport at your holiday end point. Advantages: Good reasonable direct routes to get here and to return after your holiday. Can cost less than air travel, but you may need some enroute accommodation that Disadvantages: Slow, compared to air travel. It may cost a little less than travelling by air, but you may require enroute accommodation and that could cancel out the extra cost. B: Fairly practical, reasonable ways to do it – using your own bikes. Reasonable way 1: Travel from your home by car, by air, or by other public transport to Glasgow Airport, where you can hop onto a Flybe flight to Stornoway, with your bikes. Speak to Loganair about space for bikes before booking your ticket as transport for bikes must be prebooked with Loganair (the Scottish airline that operates the island routes in ‘partnership’ with Flybe). Cost is currently (2015) £10 per bike, maximum 2 bikes per flight. Enjoy your holiday, booked for you by Hebridean Hopscotch, then on reaching Barra, return with your bikes by ferry and train to Glasgow. Check train company web site for latest info on carriage of bikes. This arrangement will also work OK in reverse direction, but remember, no bikes are allowed on Barra flights (aircraft is too small).

Hebridean Hopscotch – Information for cyclists to self‐plan incoming and return journeys.

A: Easy ways to do it – using our ‘end‐to‐end’ hire bikes.

Disadvantages: It may cost a little more than travelling by ferry, but you may not require en‐route accommodation and that could cancel out the extra cost.

Can cost less than air travel, but you may need some en‐route accommodation that     Disadvantages: Slow, compared to air travel. It may cost a little less than travelling by air, but you may require en‐route accommodation and that could cancel out the extra cost.

B: Fairly practical, reasonable ways to do it – using your own bikes.

Reasonable way 1: Travel from your home by car, by air, or by other public transport to Glasgow Airport, where you can hop onto a Flybe flight to Stornoway, with your bikes.  Speak to Loganair about space for bikes before booking your ticket as transport for bikes must be pre‐booked with Loganair (the Scottish airline that operates the island routes in ‘partnership’ with Flybe).

Page 2: Travel information for cyclists

Advantages: Your flight is the fastest way to complete one of the legs of your journey.  Disadvantages: It may cost a little more than travelling by ferry in both directions, but you may not require some en‐route accommodation and that could cancel out the extra cost.  You have to lug bikes around with you, rather than having the convenience of a hire bike – which would have allowed you to travel by air in both directions.

Not great, but do‐able  way 2: Travel from your home by car, by air, or by other public transport to Glasgow (where the airport has probably the most convenient long term secure parking).

Travel by train to Oban with your bikes, then use the ferry to Barra.  Enjoy your holiday starting at Barra, booked for you by Hebridean Hopscotch, then  on reaching Stornoway, return with your bikes by ferry to Ullapool and train to Glasgow. You’ll need transport between the Ullapool ferry terminal and Inverness.  Unless you want to ride the 55 miles, the most convenient transport is pre‐booked with D and E Coaches 01463 222444.

This arrangement will also work OK in reverse direction.

Advantages: Suits guests who dislike air travel.  Depending on your timing/luck with train fares, the price of journeys to and from Glasgow may be better than using air travel. Disadvantages: Quite a time‐consuming journey.  It may cost a little more than travelling by air in one direction as en‐route accommodation could be needed.  You have to lug bikes around with you, rather than having the convenience of a hire bike – which would have allowed you to travel by air in both directions.

Other ways of getting people and/or bikes from Stornoway to Oban or Glasgow by bike

Option 1 (to return to Oban): Take bikes to Hebrides Haulage (01851‐703255) in Stornoway , ask them to take them to Glasgow depot for later collection.  Book a night at Borrodale Hotel or at Braelea House via Hebridean Hopscotch.  Then take the bus from Stornoway to Lochboisdale (via Harris‐Berneray ferry) and catch the ferry to Oban from there (booking as many extra accommodation nights as appropriate).

Option 2 (to return to Glasgow): Take bikes to Hebrides Haulage (01851‐703255)in Stornoway  and ask them to send the bikes to their depot in Glasgow to be collected(daily service).  Then travel from Stornoway via the ferry to Ullapool, coach to Inverness, train or coach to Glasgow.

Option 3: Tarbert ferry to Uig (Skye) cycle to Mallaig via Armadale ferry, train via Fort William (a chance to ride the Jacobite Express; check on Internet) then train to Oban or Glasgow.
