DANCE Lisa Saunders

Congratulations to Lisa “Pua” Saunders, MA, and her students of Community Education’s Traditional Hawai’ian Dance. They were honored with an invitation to perform at the 12th Annual Carnegie Hall Invitational on January 14, 2018. This event was part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend Celebrations and was themed Of War, Peace and the Power of Music. The students presented a traditionally-inspired dance work entitled “Waika” before a packed house of dancers and choristers. Saunders has taught Hawai’ian Dance with Community Education for nine years, and is a kumu of a professional hula performance company, Hula Manu O’o. She is a member of UNESCO Council on International Dance and a national presenter of indigenous dance for the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. Lisa has studied with some of the world’s most renowned culture-bearers and Hula masters including Nona Beamer and George Naope.

Introduction to PilatesThis popular mind/body exercise conditioning program was developed by Joseph Pilates. We focus on deep breathing while strengthening the core muscles of the trunk of the body, allowing the limbs to move more freely and in proper alignment. Learning to move through Pilates training allows for better function and control of muscles for sports, not only to increase performance, but also to rehabilitate the body after injury. Be sure to arrive on time for warm-ups to prevent injury.

EC | The Poetic Pilgrimage: Writing Poetry as Spiritual PracticeSpring’s Theme: Body and SoulAs we rush through our days, the urge to center ourselves in something deep and sustaining intensifies. Writing poetry not only serves this urge but shares many similarities to traditional spiritual paths: focus on presence, deep listening, sincere truth-telling, and the surrender to something beyond ourselves. The body’s wisdom is often diminished in the thought-heavy discourse of our daily lives, but the body lives closer to many things the mind cannot touch. This Spring we will experiment with ways of quieting the thought-machine and accessing the insights of our body so that the soul’s small still voice might be heard. As always, we will practice the Art of Being Surprised by Our Own Poems, and we’ll read and write to our hearts’ content. All experience-levels and styles welcome.
