Cyprus Airports: Record Performance in 2012Both Larnaka International Airport and Pafos International Airport regis-tered record passenger numbers for 2012.

D espite the global economic slowdown and negative estimations voiced, Cyprus’ airports are responding positively against the international crisis by registering a record year for 2012 in terms of passen-

ger traffic, according to year-end statistics released by Hermes Airports, managing company of Larnaka International Airport and Pafos International Airport.

Both airports’ passenger movements reached a re-cord number of 7.4 million, equivalent to some 120,000 more travellers passing through the terminals over 2011,

AEGEAN Airlines carried a total of 4.9 million passengers during the first nine months of 2012, marking a year-on-year decrease of six percent. Meanwhile, load factor improved, averaging at 73.9 percent compared to 69.2 percent in the corresponding period in 2011, however, with lower average fares in the domestic market for the fourth consecutive year.

International traffic was marginally lower at 2.8 million passengers, down one per-cent, while domestic demand dropped 13 percent after carrying 2.07 million travellers.

Based on the company’s statistics, the drop in international traffic stemmed exclusively from Ath-ens, where the airline registered a seven percent decline as part of an overall market reduction of 13 percent. On the other hand, international traffic from the carrier’s five other bases in the region im-proved 10 percent, outperforming the overall rate of tourist arrivals to the country.

Net result after taxes deteriorated to a loss of EUR8.7 million compared to losses of EUR2.72 million in the same period in 2011, as a result of the high oil prices and the weak domestic demand. “The number of foreign visitors to Athens also continues to decline, indeed at a higher rate than [in 2011],” highlighted Dimitris Gerogiannis, managing di-rector, AEGEAN Airlines, adding that the company’s estimate for the full year stands at a pre-tax loss in the range of four to five percent of revenue.

International traffic from the carrier’s five other

bases in the region improved 10 percent

with 2.2 million and 5.2 million passengers landing and departing from Paphos and Larnaca international air-ports, respectively. The busiest month for both hubs was August when passenger activity totalled 1,045,916, up 22,903 in passengers traffic recorded in 2011.

In addition, 2012 was a particularly significant year for Pafos International Airport since, for the first time in its history, its annual traffic reached a record number of 2,242,797, signifying an astounding year-on-year increase of 26 percent, with 2011 registering just 1,778,898 passengers.

Cypriots Travelling Abroad Declined

According to the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT), local residents travelling abroad decreased in number in 2012 for the second year in a row.

For 2012, 1,194,053 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad, compared to 1,208,899 in 2011, recording a year-on-year decrease of 1.2 percent, whereas in 2010 Cypriot outbound travellers amounted to 1,246,378.

CYSTAT reveals that between January and December 2012, there was a decrease of 7.9 percent on the trips of residents to Russia. Only 51,121 visited the country com-pared to 55,508 in the corresponding period in 2011.

However, the statistics show that the top two coun-tries visited by Cypriots, Greece, and the UK, presented an increase, despite the overall decline. In December 2012, there was a rise of 8.3 percent on the trips of local resi-dents to Greece, with figures soaring from 26,204 in De-cember 2011, to 28,385. Similarly, visitor numbers to the UK rose to 28,681 for the same month in 2012, signifying a growth of 11.8 percent, over the same period in 2011.

The Ktima Dafermou winery is now welcoming visitors in Lefkara, a village 30 minutes away from Larnaca city.

The new facility is the first winery in Cyprus designed and built according to innovative bio-climatic standards, while it encompasses 20ha of vineyards.

Visitors can tour the production area where traditional Cypriot wine-making techniques are used, as well as admire the picturesque views over the vineyards, planted also with carob and olive trees and wild endemic aromatic plants.

Wine lovers may also be introduced to the varieties of grape in the vineyards, including reds like Syrah, Cabernet Sau-vignon, Cabernet Franc, Maratheutico, and whites such as As-syrtiko, Malvasia, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay.

The Ktima Dafermou gardens are also equipped to host outdoor events accommodating up to 550 people while small-er events can take place in the indoor cava area.

A conference entitled ‘Dental Tourism in Cyprus’, which was held in November 2012 at Hilton Cyprus, has confirmed the island’s status as a premium destination for dental tourism.

Organised by Cyprus Health Service Pro-motion Board, Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), and Cyprus Dental Association, the event comprised informative presentations, which highlighted the opportunities for those with a clinical or commercial interest in the island as a dental destination.

The Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) applauded the initiation of a series of major revival projects across the island’s capital in an effort to improve the infrastruc-ture, as well as preserve the city’s historical heritage.

British company Zaha Hadid Architects is behind the new urban recreational park set to be developed at Eleftheria Square, which will house an open-air theatre, children’s playground, bicycle route, as well as cafés and food stalls.

A new pedestrian bridge will be linking both Elefthe-ria and Solomou Square, where the new bus station, offering 14 new routes across Nicosia, is already opera-tional. Another important project is the new town hall, a group of eight buildings.

Along with the restoration and refurbishment of his-toric buildings in the city centre, other landmarks with-in Nicosia that are set for a facelift include the historic Kaimakli area in the northwest of the city, as well as the re-design and restoration of the Taht-El-Kale area.

The local development authority, Limassol Tourism Board, participated in a meeting with Chinese businessmen in a mission hosted by the Limas-sol Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

MSC Cruises has confirmed that the smallest ship on its fleet, Melody, is retiring from service and will not sail on cruises for the company anymore.

Melody has been part of the MSC Cruises fleet since 1995, when she was originally purchased as the Starship Atlantic. The ship was swiftly renamed Melody and sailed from Florida to Durban, where she received significant refurbishments and was transformed, under her new name, with a capacity of just over 1,000 guests in 532 cabins.

Following her call in Durban, Melody left the South African city for Genoa on her maiden voyage on May 1, 1997, and has since sailed various itineraries all over the world.

Passengers who have already booked a cabin on Melody for the upcoming summer season will be contacted and informed about all possible options, including an upgrade onboard one of the other ships in the MSC fleet.

The Cyprus Dive Centre Association (CDCA), in line with its long-standing commitment to protect the reefs and wrecks of the island, has announced the creation of five new marine parks in the waters surrounding Paphos, Limassol, Ayia Napa, Protaras, and Latchi.

The EUR1.5 million project, funded by CDCA, the Depart-ment of Fisheries and Marine Research, and the Cyprus Tour-ism Organisation, is expected to be materialised in the first six months of the year.

As well as the banning of fishing in any of the marine parks, CDCA is lobbying to further restrict fishing around the whole island, following the government legislation in early 2012 which restricts the amount and the times that people can fish.

According to Photos Socratous, vice chairman, CDCA, said, it is CDCA’s mission to promote awareness of the importance of the island’s underwater eco-systems.

The Pafos Regional Board of Tourism and Podilatokinisi Cycling Club, member of the European Cyclists’ Federation, have signed a co-operation agreement for the design and creation of cycling routes in the Paphos region, for use by locals and tourists in order to visit the various attractions in the district and discover the destination even further.

The project will initially include 30 cycling routes from six starting points and will cover areas such as Kouklia, Geroskipou, Paphos, Polis Chrysochous, and Pegeia, while various hotels, cafés, and retail stores will be contacted in order to contribute to the project by offering services to cyclists, like secure bike storage and toilet or shower use.

The initiative, supported by Cyprus Tourism Organisation, is ex-pected to be fully completed by May, while mapping and promotion of the routes will be undertaken through printed brochures, which will be distributed at various biking races and tournaments, and elec-tronic media.

The Pafos Regional Board of Tourism hosted a foot-ball tournament between February 9 – 19, which was organised by the travel agency, Tecoma Services in col-laboration with the Russian Football Union, and with the official support of Cyprus Sports Organisation, Cy-prus Football Association, and Cyprus Tourism Organi-sation.

Five Russian football clubs trained and took part in the tournament, while residing in local hotels located within the city as well as in Geroskipou. The initiative took place for the first time and the matches were broadcast live on Football National League (FNL)’s of-ficial website with continuous information and pho-tographs of the teams’ stay in Cyprus. The tournament was approved by the Union of European Football As-sociations and the Cyprus Football Association. Along with the football teams, the island also hosted staff of the FNL and the Russian Football Union, which was pre-sent to supervise and monitor the games.

The Pafos Regional Board of Tourism emphasised that the district offers good conditions and infrastruc-ture to place it on the world map of sport destinations. Particularly, Paphos, Pegeia, and Geroskipou have the required hotel and sports facilities, and through sys-tematic work very good results can be achieved. It is estimated that in the coming years the region can cater to the needs of golf, triathlon, and tennis enthusiasts, something which can reduce tourism seasonality.

Prestigious Football Clubs in Paphos

According to a survey carried out by the Cyprus Sports Or-ganisation (CSO) and Cyprus Tourism Organisation, sports tourism yielded a total of EUR20 million to the country’s economy between 2010 and 2011.

The study, which was presented on January 29, further indicated that the niche tourism segment can contribute to the development of the entire sports sector on the island and eliminate seasonality of tourism.

One of the key findings was that income from various sports, in 2010, reached EUR9.4 million, while for 2011, the figure rose to EUR9.7 million. For 2010, the majority of visi-tors were attracted by shooting, water ski, weight lifting, and volleyball, whereas for 2011, the most popular sports were taekwondo/judo, shooting, archery, badminton, and volleyball.

Notably, CSO announced it will implement an online booking programme on its website, whereby missions from abroad can reserve the use of CSO’s sports facilities online.

Emirates Upgrades Dubai-Cyprus-Malta Route

To meet the growing demand on the Dubai-Cyprus-Malta service, Emirates has upgraded its aircraft size to a larger Boeing 777-200 offering a total of 274 seats in a three-class configuration with 12 in first class, 42 in business, and 220 in economy class.

Jaber Mohamed, manager, Cyprus, Emirates, said, “A second aircraft upgrade within four months on our flights confirms Emirates’ commitment to Cyprus. The additional capacity will generate more trade and tourism opportunities. The Boeing 777-200 aircraft will provide our customers with the award-winning ice in-flight entertainment on every seat, world-class service, and gourmet cuisine, making the journey with Emirates as enjoyable as the destination.”

In addition to the entertainment, the carrier’s multilingual cabin crew will endeavour to provide the highest levels of service throughout the flight. Meanwhile, first and business class clients can enjoy Emirates’ service prior to take off with chauffeur-driven transfers from Cyprus, as well as on arrival at most of the airline’s destinations.

European Airport Traffic Growth Declines

Early in February Airports Council International (ACI) EUROPE, the European airport trade body, released its traffic results for 2012, which indicated a progressive slowdown in passenger traffic.

The overall passenger movement saw a year-on-year in-crease of 1.8 percent, while the report showed a clear divide between the European market and other destinations across the continent. Airports within the European Union (EU) posted a mere 0.2 percent in traffic growth between 2011 and 2012, while non-EU airports like Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Iceland, and Moldova, recorded a strong performance, soaring 8.8 percent.

According to Olivier Jankovec, director general, ACI EUROPE, the continent is now a two-speed aviation market and since 2008, passenger traffic has grown by less than 2.5 percent at European airports and by more than 38 percent at non-EU airports. “While

there are a few green shoots with air traffic now picking up in Ireland and Portugal, the outlook for [this year] remains grim for EU airports and still very dynamic for most other ones. Based on the prevailing trading conditions, our best es-timate is for nearly flat growth (0.5 percent) in passenger traf-fic at Europe’s airports for the year ahead,” he added.

airBaltic to Launch Riga – Larnaca

Latvian airline, airBaltic, has announced the commencement of a new route from Latvia’s capital city, Riga, to Larnaca, starting April 6.

The new service seeks to offer convenient travel between the two cities, twice a week, onboard a Boeing 737, offering connections to 60 destinations in Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, CIS, and the Middle East.

Michael Grimme, chief commercial officer, airBaltic, explained that the airline is concentrating on high-demand routes and has added 12 destinations to Eu-rope and the CIS for the current winter season, while it is in the planning process to open six new routes for summer.

Athens International Airport has introduced a num-ber of new areas and aesthetic and functional up-grades in the main terminal building, offering passen-gers a modern and user-friendly environment.

Upon arrival, travellers are now greeted by digi-talised airport ’employees’ who provide them with a wealth of information, 24-hours a day, at two selected spots, and the innovative service is envisaged to fur-ther expand in the future.

Located in the middle of the arrivals level, the new central information point replaces the two previously operating information counters, and in case of delayed luggage, arriving passengers now also have the option to submit an automated report at baggage tracing ki-osk, saving time and hassle.

In line with the management’s efforts to continu-ously enhance passenger experience, the bus gates have also undergone a renovation process, while at the intra-Schengen departures area, a new ‘Internet island’ has been created, offering travellers a range of services, which will soon be followed by a second hot-spot in the arrivals area.

Using advanced technology, the eight new ‘Time-to-Gate’ monitors allow passengers to allocate their time more efficiently and effectively while, through branded video walls, airlines can now directly address their cus-tomers, to ensure their hassle-free travel experience.

It will then be completed with two more rounds held on March 1-3 in Macheras For-est and on March 10 between the ancient ruins of Amathous, in the outskirts of Limassol.

Having taken place at Divani Caravel Hotel, the forum was aimed at promot-ing sustainability in the tourism industry and was attended by almost 500 ho-teliers and industry players, amongst whom was Alekos Orountiotis, chairman, Cyprus Tourism Organisation.

Meanwhile, Cyprus’ presence and participation at the conference was strong, with presentations by Zacharias Ioannides, director general, Cyprus Hotel Associ-ation, and Philippos Drousiotis, chairman, Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative.

An honour for Cyprus was the reference made by Maria Loizidou, president, Ecotourism CarbonTour Conference, to the impressive energy-savings results in all respects and the exemplary environmental management in relation to hotels on the island, describing those as examples of best practices.

An analytical software tool was presented at the forum developed by the project CarbonTour in order to facilitate staff and owners of tourist establish-ments to better measure and reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions at each accommodation resulting in saving resources.

UNWTO’s Global Evaluation of Visa Requirements

A n average 20 percent of the world’s population were not required a visa to visit an Asian destination, while 19 per-cent could obtain a visa on arrival, and seven percent an eVisa; in the case of

the Americas, this stood at 30 percent, eight per-cent, and one percent, respectively.

European destinations were the ‘least open’, when comparing the three components of a visa policy; no visa, visa on arrival, and eVisas. Although

21 percent of the world population was not re-quired a visa to enter Europe for tourism, only six percent were able to apply for a visa on arrival and no eVisa system was in place.

According to Taleb Rifai, secretary general, UN-WTO, an overall restrictive visa policy means lost opportunities for economic growth and jobs, add-ing that travellers regard visas as a formality that entails a cost which can, in turn, be a deterrent to the industry if costs exceed a certain threshold.

Based on a global evaluation of visa requirements, World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) findings show that in 2012, Asia and the Americas were the most ‘open’ regions for the entry of tourists.

MARCH 2013

Q & A with Stavros StavrouThe past 12 months have brought a number of challenges for Cyprus Airways, including financial concerns, rising fuel costs, and stiffening competition from other carriers. Here, Stavros Stavrou, chairman, Cyprus Airways, talks about the airline’s restructuring proposal and future prospects.

Stavros StavrouChairman, Cyprus Airways

Travel Trade Cyprus: How would you describe the past 12 months?

Stavros Stavrou: 2012 was a very difficult year, not only for Cyprus Airways, but also for the aviation in-dustry worldwide. [...] The economic crisis within and outside Cyprus, the intense and cut-throat competi-tion, mainly from low-cost airlines, coupled with in-herent weaknesses that have accumulated over time, have created a very difficult situation which is reflect-ed in the competitiveness of the company.

Following a decision by the House of Representa-tives, the board of directors was replaced in August 2012 and the new board, of which I am now chair-man, was given the mandate to draft a restructuring plan to reorganise the company, enhance its compet-itiveness and restore profitability. This plan was pre-pared in late 2012 by the consulting firm, Air France-KLM Consulting, and now serves as a compass for the way forward.

Travel Trade Cyprus: In order to make Cyprus Air-ways viable, the parliament has endorsed the re-lease of EUR16.3 million to the company. In addition, the airline asked for EUR73 million to implement its recently proposed restructuring plan. How will this amount help the airline return to profitability?

Stavros Stavrou: The amount is foreseen in the re-structuring plan and is absolutely necessary to sup-port the various aspects of its implementation. The next few months are crucial and require the close cooperation and understanding of everybody con-cerned with the company. We are confident that the successful implementation of the plan will contribute enormously towards our efforts of finding a strategic partner or investor.

Travel Trade Cyprus: Please share with us the main points of Cyprus Airways’ restructuring plan.

Stavros Stavrou: The measures proposed have a two-fold target of increasing revenues, on the one hand, and reducing costs, on the other.

Among the measures suggested is a significant reduction in staff numbers through redundancies by outsourcing departments where this is possible.

Also planned is the remodelling of salaries on a competitive level. [...] There is also a provision for the

introduction of incentive schemes to increase pro-ductivity, along with wage adjustments based on qualifications, performance, and accountability.

An important part of the proposals concerns the rearrangement of the flight schedule with the inte-gration of new destinations and, in parallel, better yield management according to prevailing market conditions. The services that Cyprus Airways currently awards to third parties, is another significant subject raised by the experts. [...] For example, with regards to catering, we have been in communication with com-panies which expressed an interest.

Specifically, one of the recommendations made by the experts is the separation of the department of engineering and maintenance from the main body of Cyprus Airways. We strongly disagree with this recommendation. Given that the department plays a vital role for the safety of our flights and has always been a major asset in the life span of Cyprus Airways’ 65-year history, we strongly believe that it should re-main within the company.

Travel Trade Cyprus: How has the growing pres-ence of low-cost carriers affected Cyprus Airways’ business?

Stavros Stavrou: Despite the tough competition

among the airlines, Cyprus Airways still plays a leading role in the movement of traffic to and from Cyprus. In 2012, we transported 1.3 million passengers. [...]

Nevertheless, we have definitely been affected by these airlines and what we are aiming to do is to strengthen our competitiveness against them. Unfor-tunately, the ‘low-cost companies’, which only offer seasonal services in Cyprus, enjoy preferential treat-ment by local authorities in the name of attracting greater number of inbound tourists, something that adversely affects Cyprus Airways. Even more, disap-pointingly, the resulting additional benefit to the country’s tourist industry is minimal.

Furthermore, Cyprus Airways has to struggle against other uncontrollable factors which put our airline in a disadvantageous position. For example, the ongoing Turkish embargo against our company is an unacceptable situation that violates the European Union’s objective of creating a level playing field for all carriers. Essentially, this limitation distorts compe-tition for the majority of destinations we operate [...].

Cyprus Airways could have been one of the most important key players in the transport of the rapidly increasing flow of traffic from Russia to Cyprus. For the time being, the airline’s share is reduced to just a mere 10 percent. We have calculated that with a share of around 30 percent of the Russian market, which is con-sidered very feasible provided Cyprus Airways flights faced no limitation in overflying Turkey, the company’s additional revenue would be more than EUR55 million.

Travel Trade Cyprus: How do you foresee the fu-ture of Cyprus Airways?

Stavros Stavrou: I would like to take the opportunity to strongly highlight, once again, my firm belief about the future of Cyprus Airways, which is considered as absolutely essential for Cyprus and intertwined with its economy.

Certainly, we are fully aware of our weaknesses and the problems we currently face, nevertheless we have the will and determination to make those radical changes that will transform Cyprus Airways into a flex-ible, healthy, and competitive organisation as we envi-sion it, and as the modern passenger wants it to be.

We are confident that with the support of the state, the private shareholders and with the firm as-sistance of the trade unions and staff, we will achieve our goal.

A ceremony for the deposit of the foundation stone at Limni Bay, Polis Chrysochous, was succefully held in Febru-ary, marking the start of the project owned by Cyprus Limni Resorts and Golfcourses, a subsidiary company of Shacolas Group.

Nicos Shacolas, executive chairman, Cyprus Limni Resorts and Golfcourses, expressed his joy for the commencement of works on the establishment, following what he described as painstaking efforts, which have been ongoing since 1980.

Cyprus Airways Expands its Self Check-in Platforms

Q & A with Marios HannidesWith the summer season soon approaching, Marios Hannides, director general, Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), shares his views on the latest trends, developments, and activities that are shaping the Cypriot tourism industry’s present and future.

Marios HannidesDirector general, Cyprus Tourism Organisation

Travel Trade Cyprus: Which is CTO’s overall strat-egy in promoting the island?

Marios Hannides: CTO’s main goal is to establish Cyprus as an all-year-round tourist destination by prolonging the tourist season and upgrading the overall tourism experience offered by Cyprus, within the framework of sustainable tourism development.

Our actions to extend the tourist season rely on the comparative advantages Cyprus offers in com-parison to competing Mediterranean destinations with regards to the weather, especially the winter climate, and our tourist product, which, with quick and easy changes, can satisfy visitors’ needs.

Our promotional effort, in terms of market-ing and communications, is aimed at creating a unique image and identity for Cyprus as a tourist destination, placing it strategically on the interna-tional tourism map and differentiating it from the competition. Creating those favourable conditions that will lead to an interest in Cyprus as a tourist destination and persuade consumers in the main markets to visit Cyprus is the main goal and in this respect we use the latest promotional and advertis-ing tools.

Although [this year’s] budget is limited, we are participating in about 70 travel exhibitions in 27 countries. We are present in all major exhibitions such as ITB Berlin; World Travel Market London; IMEX Frankfurt; the Moscow International Exhibi-tion for Travel & Tourism (MITT Moscow); as well as the Global Meetings & Events Exhibition (EIBTM), Barcelona.

Travel Trade Cyprus: Alternative forms of tour-ism are expected to contribute to the key ob-jectives of mitigating seasonality and increase demand. Tell us a few words about the special tourist products CTO is preparing.

Marios Hannides: Special interest tourism prod-ucts are an integral part of the Strategic Tourism Plan 2011-2015 which [is set to] enrich the tourist experience. They contribute towards the diversifi-cation of the tourist clientele, the lengthening of the tourist season, the attraction of special inter-est markets, the increase in hotel occupancy rates during the fall-winter-spring months, as well as the

overall growth in tourist arrivals and revenues. The Cyprus Tourism Organisation is actively

promoting special interest products such as con-ference and incentive tourism, golf tourism, sports tourism, cycling, hiking, rural tourism, nature tour-ism, health and wellness tourism, religious tourism, cultural tourism, weddings and honeymoons, gas-tronomic tourism, wine tourism, diving, and learn-ing tourism.

Travel Trade Cyprus: Following the first edition three years ago, CTO will launch the second Tourist Guide School from February to April 2014. Can Cyprus and its tourism industry ben-efit from university qualified individuals?

Marios Hannides: I wish to clarify that the Tour-ist Guide Schools have been operating since the 1960s. However, this is the second Tourist Guide School operating under the new relevant European standards. The school also functions under the Uni-versity of Cyprus. The Tourist Guide School oper-ates whenever a need to train guides arises, after specific assessment. Undoubtedly, university quali-fied individuals can only benefit our tourism indus-try, as those employed in the tourism industry are the most decisive factor in shaping a positive ap-praisal of a country’s tourism product.

Travel Trade Cyprus: How can the organisation en-courage investment in Cyprus’ tourism industry?

Marios Hannides: Investments in ancillary tour-ist projects, such as golf courses, marinas, confer-ence centres, and casinos will enrich the tourist product and improve the competitiveness of Cy-prus as a tourist destination. In order to attract and encourage such investments, CTO invests in creating awareness and promoting these special interest tourism segments by participating in tour-ist exhibitions, organising public relation events, and advertising in key markets as well as hosting familiarisation trips with tour operators and jour-nalists. Furthermore, the island’s favourable tour-ism investment climate has attracted investments in marinas, golf courses, and sports infrastructure projects.

Travel Trade Cyprus: How is the recently an-nounced EUR1.5 million marine park project ex-pected to stimulate the industry and what other infrastructural plans are in the pipeline?

Marios Hannides: The creation of the five new marine parks will stimulate the tourism indus-try in many ways. First, it will encourage divers to visit Cyprus, not just for the Zenobia Wreck, but to visit these marine parks as well. Tour operators will also be able to create and sell more diving tourism packages.

Marine parks can lead to the creation of marine life protection training programmes that will help Cyprus attract schools and children from abroad and sell these training programmes as part of edu-cational trips. Moreover, they will upgrade the en-vironmental protection of the Cyprus seas and our seas will be more attractive to visitors.

All of the above will help the enhancement of the Cyprus tourism product and the development of new tourist products, such as diving tourism, which is now underdeveloped.

Furthermore, the Department of Fisheries [and Marine Research] and the Cyprus Dive Centre As-sociation plan to apply for another EUR7 million by the European Fisheries Fund for the 2014-2020 period, considering the enhancement of the five marine parks being developed and the creation of new marine parks in other areas of Cyprus.
