Chile’s Wine Country

Wine making in Chile datesfrom the 16th century, whenSpanish conquistadorsplanted vines they broughtwith them. But only in thepast few decades haveChilean wines become aworldwide sensation. In2005, Wine Enthusiast

magazine named the Colchagua Valley thebest wine region in the world for red wines.Colchagua is the southernmost of the winevalleys south of Santiago, Chile’s capital. The valley’s dry Mediterranean-like climate—hot days and cool nights—are perfect for fostering a vineyard, especiallythose growing cabernet sauvignon grapes. The Tinguiririca River ensures the fruit never gets too thirsty. The terroir sets theconditions for these famously hard grapes toripen to perfection! The valleys’s vineyardsalso produce highly regarded merlots, syrahs, carmeneres and malbecs.

Predominantly the Magellanic penguins, but the Rockhopper, Macaroni and Humboldtspecies also nest along these coasts. The penguins arrive in August to dig their burrows. InOctober, females lay a single egg. Soon, parents are busily feeding their chick, who remains onland until February. At the end of March and in early April, the birds take to the sea and follow anorthward migration route. In recent years, the effect of global warming has been noted todelay the onset of their annual journey.

Even Charles Darwin made note of itduring his travels around the continent. Theinner coast is much more mild, but no lessenticing. This is where most of the island’s residents live. For most of them, the sea istheir life. Fishing is the main industry, and thebounty of the sea is the major ingredient in thelocal cuisine. The inner coast, protected fromthe harsh elements on the other side of theisland, is home to a special collection of wooden churches.
