Visas, Passports, Insurance & Inoculations If you’re travelling on an Australian or New Zealand passport you will need a visa to enter Tanzania. You can do this in advance by downloading an application form online at http://www.tanzaniaconsul.com/apply.html . Then follow the instructions as to where to post the completed form along with your payment, photos & relevant documents. It is also possible to obtain a visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport & although it is cheaper this way, we do not recommend it. Your visa could take a long time to process or there may be unexpected ‘hiccups’ or delays at the airport which could impact on your ability to join the group at the scheduled time.

Comprehensive travel insurance is compulsory.

Inoculations are recommended for Hep A, Hep B, rabies, typhoid & boosters for tetanus, diphtheria & measles, but please check with your doctor for your individual requirements. For more information visit https://www.travelvax.com.au/holiday-traveller/vaccination-requirements .

About Tanzania Tanzania is a sovereign state in East Africa which borders Kenya & Uganda to the north; Rwanda, Burundi, & Democratic Republic of Congo to the west; Zambia, Malawi & Mozambique to the south & the Indian Ocean to the east. Africa's highest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro, is located in north-eastern Tanzania not far from Arusha –but due to numerous dodgy movies about Africa, it is often portrayed as being in Kenya or South Africa. Tanzania has an estimated population of about 57 million made up of several ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. Around 70% of the population is rural.

Tanzania is a presidential constitutional republic. Since 1996 the capital has been Dodoma but Dar es Salaam, the former capital, retains most government offices and is the country's largest city, principal port, and leading commercial centre. Tanzania is a one party dominant state with the socialist-progressive Chama Cha Mapinduzi party in power. Prehistoric migrations into Tanzania included people from present-day Ethiopia, northern Kenya, Sudan & West Africa. European colonialism began in mainland Tanzania during the late 19th century when Germany formed German East Africa; this gave way to British rule after World War I. The mainland was governed as Tanganyika, with the Zanzibar Archipelago remaining a separate colonial jurisdiction. Following independence, the two entities merged in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. Tanzania is mountainous and densely forested in the north-east where Mt Kilimanjaro is located. The country also boasts some of Africa's Great Lakes including Lake Victoria, (Africa's largest lake) & Lake Tanganyika (Africa’s deepest lake known for its unique species of fish). The eastern shore is hot and humid, with the Zanzibar Archipelago just offshore. For centuries, the ‘Spice Island’ of Zanzibar was one of the ancient world’s most important ports. Over 100 different languages are spoken in Tanzania but the ‘adopted’ language most often used is Swahili. English is currently used in foreign trade, diplomacy, higher courts & as a medium of instruction in high schools & colleges, however, the government is planning to discontinue English as a language of instruction altogether. Approximately 38% of the country’s land area is set aside in protected areas for conservation. Tanzania has 16 national parks plus a variety of game & forest reserves including the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. In western Tanzania, Gombe Stream National Park is the site of Jane Goodall's ongoing study of chimpanzees, which started in 1960. Tanzania is highly biodiverse & contains a wide variety of animal habitats. On the Serengeti plain (which extends into Kenya where it is called the Masai Mara), wildebeest & other bovids participate in an annual large-scale eliptical migration in search of new grazing areas created by seasonal rains. Tanzania is also home to about 130 amphibian & over 275 reptile species. It has the reputation of being one of Africa’s most popular tourist destinations for safe, scenic & spectacular wildlife safaris. Known as a fantastic venue to find the “Big 5”, it was a favourite haunt for such legendary (& sadly over- enthusiastic) hunters as Teddy Roosevelt & Ernest Hemingway.

PROPOSED ITINERARY Day 1: Monday, August 19 Clients fly independently to Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha, Tanzania, arriving by 3:00 p.m. You will be met on arrival at the airport & transferred to our safari lodge. Please exchange money at the airport on arrival purchasing sufficient Tanzanian shillings for the first half of your safari. At 5:00 p.m. there will be an important briefing at the lodge with your tour guides & tour escorts followed by a special Welcome Dinner. Overnight at Rivertrees Country Inn http://rivertrees.com/ (D) NOTE: If you would like to arrive a day early (August 18) to rest & recover from jet lag, we would be happy to book an additional night’s accommodation for you at the group lodge at a cost of USD$315 per room per night (includes breakfast & airport transfer.) Day 2: Tuesday, August 20 We take our first game drive through Arusha National Park not far from Mt Kilimanjaro – on a clear day we may be able to see the peak! After our game drive we enjoy a picnic lunch & can then either take a two-hour guided bush walk, go canoeing on Lake Momela with a guide, take an optional escorted cycle ride through the local village or just relax & enjoy the surroundings. Overnight at Rivertrees Country Inn (B, L, D) Day 3: Wednesday, August 21 We depart Arusha for Tarangire National Park, known for its abundance of elephants. Many animals flock there in the dry season in search of water as the Tarangire is usually the only river that does not dry out. En-route we will stop at Shanga, an unusual shop & social enterprise that employs people with disabilities to create unique, high quality handmade jewellery, glassware & homewares using recycled materials. They also make great cappuccinos! We will also visit the Tanzanite Curio Shop, known for its fabulous tanzanite stones & handmade jewellery. This blue & violet coloured stone is only found in a very small mining area of Tanzania. Overnight at Tarangire Safari Lodge (B, L, D) http://www.tarangiresafarilodge.com/ Day 4: Thursday, August 22 We go on an early morning game drive through Tarangire National Park which has a large elephant population, numerous species of birds & animals as well as hundreds of iconic baobab trees. We return to the lodge overlooking the Tarangire River for breakfast, perhaps enjoy a siesta, have lunch, then meet up for an afternoon game drive when the animals are active. Overnight: Tarangire Safari Lodge (B, L, D) Day 5: Friday, August 23 We drive on to Lake Manyara National Park & the town of Karatu through a number of towns & villages. Lake Manyara is teeming with wildlife such as elephants, hippos, giraffe, buffalo, antelopes & baboons but the most iconic attraction is the tree-climbing lions if we are fortunate enough to see them. (B, L, D) Overnight at The Country Lodge, Karatu http://www.countrylodgekaratu.com/ Day 6: Saturday, August 24 Free day. Today you can relax, do laundry (additional charge), swim in the pool, have a massage or catch up on your journal! However, if you don’t want to waste a minute, there are several options available. You can go to Gibbs Farm for a beautiful lunch & enjoy a walk around their amazing property (USD$25 p.p.), explore the Elephant Caves or waterfall walks at nearby Karatu ($USD15 p.p.) or visit a local school or orphanage sponsored by AATz. (B, L, D - unless lunching at Gibbs Farm) Overnight at The Country Lodge, Karatu Day 7: Sunday, August 25 Today we visit Lake Eyasi where we spend the morning with the Hadzabe tribe and learn how they hunt & gather food. We also visit the Blacksmith tribe & watch them create weapons & jewellery. After lunch we drive to Ngorongoro Crater, check into our lodge on the crater rim & admire the spectacular views while enjoying sundowners on the balcony. (B, L, D) Overnight at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Review-g317085-d646965-Reviews-Ngorongoro_Wildlife_Lodge-Ngorongoro_Conservation_Area_Arusha_Region.html

Day 8: Monday, August 26

After breakfast we descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a full day of game driving on the crater floor – it’s like the Garden of Eden! The crater is home to the very rare Black Rhino & is famous for its hippo pond, but an animal you will not find here is the giraffe as the steep crater walls are too hard for them to walk down. We enjoy a picnic lunch (beware of the thieving kites!) in the crater floor & drive back up to our lodge later that afternoon for our second stunning view of Ngorongoro while sipping sundowners.

Overnight at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge (B, L, D) Day 9: Tuesday, August 27 After an early breakfast we begin an extended game drive taking us to Serengeti National Park. En-route we stop at historic Oldupai Gorge, one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world. This is where some of the first human footprints are preserved & the area has proven invaluable in furthering our understanding of human evolution - you may associate it with Dr Richard Leakey, a famous Kenyan paleoanthropologist, conservationist & politician. We enjoy a packed lunch & listen to stories of the land. We also visit a local Maasai village where we interact with the people & enjoy a cultural experience. The Serengeti is ever changing depending on the season. The animals are also constantly moving in their migration in a clock-wise direction throughout the year in search of pastures and water. Your guide is a wealth of knowledge so as we drive, be sure to ask lots of questions! After awhile you’ll start spotting the animals yourself!

We continue on to our “Great White Hunter” style mobile tented safari camp to spend our first night under canvas! This is the traditional safari style accommodation used by such well known figures as Karen Blixen & Denys Finch Hatton & is an experience not to be missed. You’ll be surprised at how comfortable camping can be & how well you’ll be looked after! Your safe & spacious tent has private en-suite facilities, is mozzie-proof & has magnificent views! Sleeping in a safari tent surrounded by nature is a magical experience you’ll never forget!

Overnight at Kati Kati in Central Serengeti National Park (B, L, D) http://twctanzania.com/en/accommodation/kati-kati-tented-camp/ Day 10: Wednesday, August 28 We continue our journey from Central to North Serengeti enjoying a day-long game drive admiring the flora, fauna & birdlife & keeping an eye out for the Big 5 (To remember them think ‘BELLR’: Buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard & rhino!). We spend three wonderful days in a semi-permanent tented camp exploring this area & experiencing the annual wildlife ‘migration’. Overnight at Kati Kati Camp in Northern Serengeti (B, L, D) http://twctanzania.com/en/accommodation/kati-kati-tented-camp/

Day 11: Thursday, August 29 This morning we have the opportunity to ‘touch the hand of God’ – one poet’s description of flying in a hot-air balloon. This experience is wonderful anywhere, but in our opinion, floating high above the African savannah at sunrise during the migration followed by a champagne breakfast is one of life’s most precious memories. The flight costs approximately USD$560 per person - it’s expensive but worth it. If you would like to do this optional activity, we must book early & pay in advance as places are strictly limited. Those not going ballooning can sleep in a bit & then we’ll spend the rest of the day searching for game.

Overnight: Kati Kati Camp in Northern Serengeti (B, L, D) Day 12: Friday, August 30 This morning there is a second opportunity to fly over the Serengeti in a hot-air balloon. Then we spend our last day of our safari day in our beautiful surroundings searching for game & soaking up the wonders of Africa. Tonight we enjoy a special Farewell Dinner. Overnight: Kati Kati Camp in Northern Serengeti. (B, L, D)

Page 5: TREASURES OF TANZANIA SAFARI - Global Gypsies Tanzania.FINAL.pdf · The eastern shore is hot and humid, with the Zanzibar Archipelago just offshore. For centuries, the ‘Spice Island’

From here you can either fly back to Arusha Aiport or Kilimanjaro Airport for your flight home or continue on to other destinations. Or you can continue on to Zanzibar or Uganda for an optional post-safari tour. (Note that the internal flight from Kogatende to Arusha or Kilimanjaro is included in your tour package. Flights to other destinations are either included in the post-safari tours or are at your own expense). (B)
