Dear Parents and Students,We ended last week with sweet strawberries for sale to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Students soon worked out that while they were limited to buy only one for themselves, they could buy as many as they wished for their friends and quickly made arrangements to buy strawberries for each other. Thank you to Marcelle, Diane and Deborah for organising strawberries for Valentine’s day.Parents are cordially invited to join in on classes in Eurythmy on Mondays, Speech on Tuesdays and Yoga on Wednesdays at 9am in the Eurythmy room starting in week 2. A parent library is open on Mondays and parent education classes will also run on Tuesdays and Parent Craft Group on Fridays in the Hearth, located in the Early Childhood area. Our first annual event and fundraiser for animals affected by Bushfires is planned for Friday, Week 3, 21 February with a BBQ at 6pm and movie showing of Motorkite Dreaming 7pm-9pm. Please see details in the enews to purchase tickets for food and the movie. Families of all ages are invited to the BBQ and the movie is appropriate for 12 years old and up. Teacher supervision for the movie will be provided. Parents will need to make arrangements for drop off/pick up.

Also, this coming Monday, 24 February, parents are invited to a talk by Seth Jordan on “Seeds for a new social understanding” in the Eurythmy room at 6:30pm for a gold donation. For my Class 12 project I will be exploring how the five senses (Touch, Sight, Hearing, Smell and Taste) impact the way we experience the world around us. I would like to gain an understanding of how young children are influenced by their senses and what happens to the individual when one of these instinctual abilities are absent.I was inspired to research this project further because I have always wondered how I experience the world differently as someone living with Anosmia. I am interested in people and what makes us human. I am interested by the way our brains create links with our surroundings using the senses as a tool to understand and navigate the world. For the practical element of my project, I hope to create an experiential sensory focused art exhibition. This will involve capturing and demonstrating my discoveries about our senses. This will take form in different experiences I hope to provide for the community.

Board News

Board (but never boring!) NewsWho and what is ‘The Board’ and who’s on it right now??Governance of this school is shared between the School Board - responsible for setting and monitoring the strategic direction of the school, ensuring sustainability and fiscal responsibility - and the management group, or Executive, to whom the actual running of the school is delegated - the Principal (Helen Platell), Assistant Principal (Liam Waterford) and Business Manager (Mark Lucas). The Board meets twice a term and follows established policy and procedures in regards to meetings, communications and conduct and confidentiality. The role of Chairperson is shared between Richie Khoo and Doreen Mellor. Richie has 2 children in our high school, and Doreen has a grand daughter in the primary school. The Board Secretary is Don Frakes, who also has 2 high school students. Ritchie Marshall, Dan Hockin and Sally Amazon are ordinary members of the Board and are also parents of the school. All have been a part of the school community for some years and applied to become Board Members because they are passionate supporters of Waldorf Education and the Mount Barker Waldorf School. You can read more about each of them under ‘Governance Info’ on the school’s website. The newest member of the Board and satisfying the Constitutional condition that one member must NOT be a member of the Association at time of induction, is Donna Potts who comes with an HR and change-management background – skills ideally suited to Board Membership. There are 2 vacancies currently on the Board, and 3 members with terms set to expire or be renewed at the next AGM.Constitution and Committees…The Constitution, while creating rules and processes is not an infallible document, nor is it incapable of change. The Board is aware that the current Constitution served a particular period in the school’s evolution and in 2020 will form a committee of both Board and community Members to evaluate and suggest amendments to this important document. Forming committees is an important role for the Board. This is where having a broad range of skills and passions within its membership can bring out the best in a Board. We hope you were aware that 2019 was a year of celebration for our school as the ‘40/100 committee’ led a series of events to bring us together and celebrate our own 40th anniversary and the centenary of Waldorf education worldwide. The Landscape Working Group is also a committee of the Board with wonderfully dedicated staff, parents and community members joining with Dan

Hockin and Doreen Mellor to plan and implement a whole-school plan to develop and invigorate our grounds and gardens. The Board has also led the 2020-2025 Strategic Planning process which involved the whole community in Unconferences and discussions to uncover our values and set our direction for the next 5 years. The Board is not a mysterious group who meets at midnight under a full moon in a fairy circle… We are ordinary, striving humans seeking to make decent and ethical decisions, with all the information available to us. In Class 9 we are looking at darkness and light and all the greys that may possibly exist in between.Students explored light shining on the surface of a sphere and light behind the sphere in charcoal.

Students experimented with Cyanotype printing. The cyanotype process was one of the first non-silver technologies used to create photographic images. Originated in the 1840’s, it was not utilized in mainstream photography and was adopted as a copying technique, becoming known by the term “blueprint”, with its blue background reproductions of large architectural and mechanical drawings.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is open to students from Classes 1 to 12. Students are invited to read or share in the reading of 12 books at a level that suits them. The Challenge booklist is available online at the Premier’s Reading Challenge and at the school library. Premier’s Reading list books the school owns are marked in our library with a gold sticker.

Landscape

Native Plant of the Week

This week’s plant is Goodenia ovata, or Hop Goodenia. It is a highly ornamental flowering shrub with dark green glossy leaves and yellow flowers all year round. It is indigenous to South Australia where it is found in riparian zones (waterways) and woodland.It is fast growing, responds well to pruning and gets to around 1.5m wide. As a result, we have used a lot of this in high visibility areas such as the Kindy Forest and Playgroup carpark.It attracts native butterflies and insects, which in turn support our feathered friends we are trying to encourage. Home Healthcare This is a hands on workshop wth instructions for applying external compresses and a selection of

remedies to manage fever, skin infections, worms, bruises and similar common health processes that

occur in childhood.

EduCareDo

EduCareDo offers a self directed distance learning course based on the

principal ideas of Rudolf Steiner. It is comprised of 26 lessons sent

every 2 weeks over 12 months. Each lesson builds on the last and there is a
