Fellow Congregants,As we conclude the month of April and begin the month of May, I look back and find it hard to believe

that almost a year has gone by since I became your President. There have been a lot of changes in this short period of time. We have become a strong congregation

with a will to succeed on a path of continuance despite many obstacles that have been put in front of us.I would like to say congratulations and thank you to all our board members and congregants; Rabbis

Sherman, Marcus, and Doberne-Schor; and Risa Strauss, Cheryl Nail, Bobbie Osborne, and Demitris Gilmore for volunteering and doing a wonderful job at The Big Nosh™. Over 1,100 people attended the fourth annual event, and it keeps getting better each year. The food, the traditions, and the opportunity to show the community our customs is a real treat once a year.

I have enjoyed being your President, and it has been a privilege and an honor to serve you. I will ask you as I begin my second year in two months to please give generously in your pledge when you receive your letter in the next few weeks. The Temple really needs your support. This is a very critical year

invited and encouraged to attend the Congregational Annual Meeting on Wednesday evening, June 5. The meeting is an opportunity to come together, examine where we are as a congregation, look back on the highlights of this past year, and thank all of our wonderful members and volunteers who have worked so hard on behalf of the Tree of Life.

At the meeting, we will elect new officers and board members, approve the Temple’s 2013-2014 budget, and hear reports from the President, Rabbi, Religious School Director, and various committees.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!by Rabbi Daniel M. Sherman

What a great time of year! Not only is there a lot going on at Temple, but there is also a real sense of excitement, joy, and enthusiasm around the Tree of Life Congregation right now.

Much of it comes from last month’s big event – The Big Nosh™. What a beautiful day we had! I cannot describe how much I enjoy seeing so many people at Temple having a good time, meeting each other, learning, and trying new foods. I love watching guests for whom this is their first time to enter a synagogue. I enjoy answering questions and showing off our Temple home. There were so many learning opportunities for everyone. And fun activities. And great music. And wonderful Jewish

food, as well. Again, what a great day! But what really makes The Big Nosh™ so special to me is watching our congregation come together to pull off this event. So many people helped to make The Big Nosh™ happen: from all the planning before the event, to lending a hand at the event, and cleaning up afterwards.

I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to our chairperson, David Carr, for all of his hard work on The Big Nosh™. Thank you, David and the planning committee, for all of your efforts. I want to thank everyone who volunteered and gave of themselves, their time, and their energy to make sure that the event was a success. Thank you to all of our sponsors, as well. I also want to thank our wonderful TOL staff for all of their hard work. So much work and preparation goes into an event of this magnitude – please know how much I, and our entire congregation, appreciate all that you, everyone involved, have done. Way to go, Tree of Life! Yashar Koach and Kol HaKavod!

And the excitement continues! We celebrated as two of our students became B’nei Mitzvah last month, and we look forward to celebrating this month as Nick Perales and Carolina Rodgers become B’nei Mitzvah in May and Dan Kline in June. Please join us for our Bar and Bat Mitzvah services – remember that everyone is invited and welcome to join in the simcha. Please note: our service on Saturday, May 4 will be held at Temple Sinai of Sumter, where the Perales family has long been members.

Our life-cycle celebrations continue with our Confirmation Service on Tuesday, May 14 – which is the eve of the Festival of Shavuot. Shavuot is one of our most important holidays of the year, as we mark the anniversary of our receiving God’s teachings and commandments at Mt. Sinai. We have a large Confirmation Class of 5773 – 12 students – and we are very proud of them for reaching this milestone in their Jewish education and lives. They will lead us in worship, read the Ten Commandments as our Torah portion, and share some of what they have learned in class this year while confirming their commitment to living active Jewish lives. Confirmation is truly one of my favorite services of the year. Please plan on being a part of our very special Shavuot observance.

We will also have the opportunity this month to honor some of our most important groups at Temple. Friday, May 10 is Sisterhood Sabbath, and we will honor the women of our TOL WRJ/Sisterhood. Sisterhood has long been part of the heart and soul of our congregation, as well as our backbone and support. We appreciate all that Sisterhood has done and continues to do. We want to say a special thank you to our Sisterhood leaders, as we mark this year as the 100th anniversary of our national Women of Reform Judaism.

The following week we will honor our Religious School teachers at Teacher Appreciation Shabbat on May 17. Our Kitah Aleph (beginning Hebrew) students will help to lead our service. It is a chance for us to thank all of our teachers and all those who work so hard to provide our children with the best Jewish education and experience that we can offer. Of course, this begins with our hard-working and multi-talented Risa Strauss, who provides the inspiration, direction, guidance, warmth, and love that make our Religious School such a wonderful experience for the children of our congregation. We will continue to express our gratitude and appreciation to our teachers, students, and volunteers during our last day of Religious School on Sunday, May 19 (I can’t believe the end of the school year is upon us).

At the end of May, my family will be gathering in Tulsa, OK to mark the retirement of my father from Temple Israel. The “senior Rabbi Sherman” has served the congregation with love, dedication, and distinction for the past 37 years. Morgan, the kids, and I are looking forward to participating in the weekend that will honor both my father and mother for their significant contributions to the congregation and community. We hope now to see them here in South Carolina more often.

Again, I want to thank everyone who has helped to support and make all that we do here at Temple possible – I look forward to our keeping this excitement and joy going throughout this month and beyond.

FROM THE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL DIRECTORISRAEL, OUR JEWISH HOMELANDby Risa Strauss

In Judaism, “remembering” is an integral facet of all our commemorations and celebrations. In the springtime of any year, Jewish people all over the world take a spiritual and emotional journey to times of significance in our distant and not-so-distant past. From remembering our exodus from Egypt during Passover, to never forgetting the meaning of the Holocaust and the memory of the near complete destruction of European Jewry, to coming together again on Shavuot when we as a people received the Torah on Mount Sinai, we are compelled to feel, imagine, and understand a wide breadth of Jewish experience. And every year, as May 14th approaches, we are asked to remember with all of our hearts how our centuries of prayer to God to “return to Jerusalem and Zion” were answered with the creation of the state of Israel on May 14, 1948.

For 65 years we have celebrated the rebirth of a nation, a Jewish nation, an event that many Jews in the generation before me never thought they would witness. In just a mere six and one half decades, Israel has built a thriving democracy (alone in the region), an active press, an enlightened and engaged scientific and university community, a civilian-run and supported military, and a robust economy. Israelis enjoy a good quality of life, excellent medical care, and high life expectancy. All accomplishments aside, Israel is an amazing testament to history, courage, belief in God, and the raw will of a people.

In April, I had the honor and privilege of hosting my aunt and uncle, Leo and Doris Dreyfuss, from New York, who came to Columbia at the invitation of the French Organization, “Memorial de la Shoah.” This Holocaust memorial group, along with Erica Safran, a USC student in our community, is responsible for bringing to the Richland Public Library an exhibit (open through May 10) about Helene Berr. Helene Berr was a 23-year-old French-Jewish woman from Paris who, like Anne Frank, kept a journal about the cruelties she witnessed around her in Nazi-occupied France until her deportation to Auschwitz in 1944. Before being rounded up she was very active working for the French Resistance and for the group, Organization de Secures Les Enfants. This was the group whose primary goal was to help remove Jewish children from French concentration camps and hide them with sympathetic gentiles in farms, basements, and attics throughout the French countryside.

Uncle Leo was a hidden child. Swooped out of the Gurs Concentration Camp as a five-year-old in 1942, two weeks before his parents were cremated in Auschwitz, he arrived in the United States as an orphan via the USS Uruguay in 1946. He grew up with a Tanta, an aunt, who had arrived in New York from Germany before 1939. After high school, Uncle Leo enlisted in the US Army and then, after being discharged, became a New York City Public School teacher, teaching middle school math in the south Bronx for 30 years. He was a great and beloved teacher. He is a wonderful uncle.

So what is the connection between Leo and Israel? Well, he never really liked Israel much. He never really formed much of a connection. While he was proud of his German-Jewish culture and background, Zionism and the establishment of the Jewish state passed Uncle Leo by. And this makes sense. As a refugee, in 1948, young Leo – in order to assimilate – needed to learn English, play baseball, and embrace his new country and all things American whole-heartedly. And not get caught up in Israel fervor.

Leo’s adult view of Israel, that he can be Jewish in America just fine and why do we need a specific Jewish State, stayed pretty much stagnant until 1991, when right after the first Gulf War, I came back to the States from Israel for a visit. Leo and his wife, who were not blessed with children, fell completely in love with my daughter Ariel, their grand-niece. They decided that since they were retired, they would visit. They made their first trek to Israel in the mid 1990s. Of course they had a wonderful and meaningful trip.

But, for hidden child and Holocaust survivor, Leo Dreyfuss it was a mind-altering experience, as well as an epiphany. Upon arriving at Ben-Gurion Airport, he saw Jewish Stars everywhere. Walking in the streets, he saw and heard Jewish people from all over the world, walking freely and enjoying life. And when visiting a Hadassah Youth Aliyah village, he met with orphaned children, Ethiopian, Russian, and Yemenite refugees, all finding a home in Eretz Yisrael. This visit cemented for Leo a new relationship with the Jewish State. And this realization happened when he finally understood that had there been an Israel in 1939, there would have been no such thing as a closed border to Jews. Because the door to Israel would have been open.

The Magen David – Jewish Star – is the most commonly thought of symbol of the Jewish people. And today in 2013 it is quite common for Jewish people to wear a Jewish star as part of a necklace or in earrings. We do this because we can. In the words of Helene Berr after being ordered to wear the yellow Jewish star on May 29, 1942, “I did not want to wear the star, it was degrading. But I ended up doing so, thinking my reluctance was cowardly…I was very courageous all day long. I held my head high, and I stared at other people so hard that it made them avert their eyes. But it's difficult. At the métro station . . . the ticket inspector said: 'Last carriage, Jew’ – I suddenly felt I was no longer myself, that everything had changed, that I had become a foreigner, as if I were in the grip of a nightmare. I could see familiar faces all around me, but I could feel their awkwardness and bafflement. It's all horrible.” Helene’s written pages about publicly displaying this hateful insignia are shocking. We see how at first she hesitates, she considers wearing the yellow Jewish Star "degrading," but ultimately she changes her mind out of a brave sense of solidarity. That oneness with our Judaism is our strength, and our strength today comes from a strong Israel. No Jewish person is a foreigner in Eretz Yisrael.

The complete joy of being able to live freely as a Jew in a Jewish homeland is overwhelming and powerful. The link between land, faith, language, and people has resulted in a modern and vibrant nation, and it is a country that as American Jews we can be proud of. Seriously, did you know that Israel was the only country in the world to enter the 21st century with a net gain in its number of trees? Or that an Israeli company developed the world’s first jellyfish repellent?

Israel at 65, unlike human beings, has over 2,000 years of history and knowledge in its bones and a wonderful future ahead of herself – with no retirement in sight! Theodore Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, said, “Im tirtzu, ayn zo agadah. Lihiyot am chofshi be’artzeinu. Be’eretz tziyon V’yerushalyim.” (If you will it, it is no dream – to be a free people in our land in Zion and Jerusalem.) Well, it is no dream… We have a Jewish Homeland. And, as American Jews, we stand as ONE with the state of Israel. And together with world Jewry we can envision and ensure an Israel that is forever healthy, growing, and strong.

Before we even begin with all that is “going on” in Religious School during the month of May, I must extend a huge Todah Rabah to all the volunteers who have assisted with all of our Religious School, Big Nosh™, and Temple programming this past year. Words cannot describe how grateful we are for all of your help and support.

The month of May is typically busy on any school calendar, and TOL Religious School’s is no different. There are many things happening and so many events to share with your children and all the other families and households at Tree of Life. We hope that you will take advantage of the myriad of possibilities available to engage yourself Jewishly! If you have never attended a Bar or Bat Mitzvah service at TOL, there are three opportunities in the month of May and beginning of June alone! This month, as well, we are honoring our dedicated team of teachers and our graduating 12th graders at a special Kitah Alef Shabbat Service. As a culmination of their 10 years of Jewish education, our 10th-grade Confirmation Class, under the direction of Rabbi Sherman, will be leading us in a very special Service of Confirmation and Shavuot Service in the middle of the month. Our 10th graders will also be hosting their annual car wash and flower sale on May 5. The last session of Religious School (I can’t believe it!) for the school year is scheduled for Sunday, May 19. We will conclude the year with our annual end-of-year assembly, volunteer recognition, and picnic! Details will be forthcoming.

PINAT IVRIT: A MONTHLY CORNER OF HEBREW

Aliyah means “going up.” The root letters are ayin, lamed, hey.

In common usage it is thought of as a term describing one’s immigration to Israel. In the synagogue we receive an “aliyah” during the Torah reading because we are being “called up” to the bimah.

The term aliyah, however, also evokes a sense of holiness, of rising from one plane of existence to another. For usage purposes, one “makes” aliyah to Israel and “receives” an aliyah when being called to the bimah.

It is not insignificant to note that Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot are all holidays when traditionally Jews made an “aliyah laregel,” a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to visit the Temple. This “ascending by foot” up the hills to Jerusalem was considered to be an opportunity for renewal and inspiration and continues today in modern times, even though The Holy Temple is no longer part of the ritual.

A LOOK BACK AT THE BIG NOSH™ I would like to thank everyone on The Big Nosh™ planning board, as well as all those who helped bake and prepare the food before The Big Nosh™ and The Taste of The Big Nosh™. I would also like to thank those who worked on the grounds and everyone who volunteered the day of the event. This is a huge endeavor, and many people spent countless hours making this annual event possible. It has been my privilege to chair the event this year, and I hope everyone had time to participate in the day, take in some of the educational activities, enjoy the entertainment, shop in our bazaar, and, of course, partake in all the delicious food. GREEN TEAM UPDATE

Rain Garden Update [email protected]

As of this writing, we are preparing be on display during The Big Nosh™. Our exhibit will include Carolina Clear’s popular watershed exhibit. Representatives from the Gills Creek Watershed Association plan to join us also. We had a successful rain garden clean up on Sunday, April 7. Special thanks go to David Potter and Brad Smith who removed many vines on our northern border to expose some young cedar trees. We were excited to see that one of our cypress trees is beginning to grow two knees.

We are anticipating many visitors during The Big Nosh™, including some from other Green Congregations who learned about The Big Nosh™ and the rain garden during a recent meeting.
