you are holding our new tree guide, van den berk nurseries annual publication. over the last few years, we have informed you about the benefits of trees to the environment and quality of life in urban areas. in the meantime, this subject has been the topic of many other publications. We therefore assume that you, as a horticultural professional, no longer need to be convinced of the benefits of trees; if that were ever necessary…

as a result of all these publications about the environmental value of trees, we almost seem to forget that trees are above all very beautiful and delightful. That is why the ‘fun’ aspect of trees is the main focus of this magazine. We will show you some of our favourite species and tell you more about a series of striking flowering trees.

We will also show you some examples of a beautiful ‘tree legacy’. by planting trees you are contributing immensely towards the creation of a green legacy for future generations. and if you decide on larger sized trees, there is a lot to enjoy in the short term too! We will give you some tips and suggestions for ‘trees for the future’.

and finally in this tree guide, an article about the floriade, where, for the past two years, we have been supplying many special types of trees for the central avenue. These will be on show from spring 2012, when the World horticultural expo in venlo will open its doors. We hope you will enjoy reading our tree guide!

Tenth anniversary sponsorship BALI Awards

Arnold Claußen bids farewellafter having worked for 50 years, arnold claußen, manager of the rhododendron nursery in rastede, retired last august. arnold was well-known for his profound knowledge of rho-dodendrons and his amiable personality. several years ago, he decided to stay on until after the take-over by van den berk and retire in 2010. now the moment has come, and he will be severely missed by his colleagues. We hope he will enjoy his retirement.We are very lucky to have other experienced employees at van den berk rhododendron gmbh, such as dieter martini (photo, right). in august, together with arnold claußen, he was honoured by the german ‘landwirtschaftskammer’ for his many years of service to agriculture and horticulture. dieter has been working for the nursery for 40 years and has no plans to retire any time soon.

van den berk nurseries has been a sponsor of the bali awards since 2001. each december, bali, the british association of landscape industries, organizes a meeting where awards for the best landscaping project are presented. This award ceremony takes place during a spectacular event, attended by all the important british landscape planners. for the last ten years, van den berk has been a constant feature at the event, which indicates the importance of long-term partnerships.

We hardly have to convince anyone about the benefits of trees. over the last few years, much has been written about the benefits of trees to the environment and quality of life in urban areas. When judging and selecting species, the figures for particulates and co2-bonding always play a role. it almost seems as if the aesthetic qualities of a tree are no longer important. Whether the beauty of trees in the landscape, in a park, or in the city, we enjoy trees, very much, consciously or unconsciously. a good reason to ask some of the sales reps what their favourite tree is.

Thierry Carlier (sales and advice france):Graphic shapemy favourite tree is the metasequoia glyptostroboides (dawn redwood), because of its upright, graphic shape and the light, soft needles. it is a beautiful, impressive tree, which grows quickly and is very adaptable. The tree was introduced in europe not that long ago - somewhere in the fifties - but it has turned out to be a very healthy, strong tree which can be grown in many different locations and which is very suitable for urban areas. an impressive tree.

Stijn Wijnants (sales and advice flanders):Childhood memoriesi don’t really have one favourite tree, there are a few i have a soft spot for. mostly native trees, such as castanea or robinia. if i had to choose one, it would be a normal salix alba (white willow). i prefer seeing it as a pollard willow, the older the better. They can add such character and be a real feature in the landscape. sometimes they are completely hollow on the inside, but still grow those fresh leaves. When i was young, myself and my friends would set up ‘camp’ in an old, gnarly tree in the summer. if i plant one now, i prefer using the ‘belders’ variety. it has the best resistance against ‘watermark disease’.

Jan van Kempen (sales and advice south and east regions of the netherlands):Characterit may not come as a surprise, because they are part of the landscape where i grew up, but i choose the Quercus robur (common oak). This oak is very important for the landscape. They are a feature in the landscape and have a unique character, especially on sandy soil. They are trees full of character with a long life expectancy. That longevity, the fact that they will be here in a few generations to come, is also a beautiful thing.



Johan van den Berk(sales and advice germany, switzerland and luxemburg):Beautiful in every seasonmy favourite tree is the parrotia persica (persian ironwood), for several reasons. The parrotia has a very characteristic winter silhouette and flowers early in spring. The autumn colours are a beautiful warm red. The leaves start to discolour quite early and retain the redness for a long time. last summer i was in cornwall and i visited project eden. amongst other trees, we supplied a whole avenue of parrotias in 2000. These trees were especially selected by us for their early colouration, and we were able to enjoy its beautiful deep red leaves in august. i find it a very striking tree, and the multi-trunk variety is also beautiful. it has a somewhat mystical, eastern character, but then, it is originally from persia. however, it is quite a hardy tree, so it can be used in large parts of central-europe.

Jan van Vechel(sales and advice belgium, uk, ireland):Pridei don’t really have one favourite tree, because there are a lot of trees i like. a tree i really respect and enjoy, is the fagus sylvatica ‘atropunicea’ (red beech). There are several rea-sons: When i was young, around 10 years old, my parents took us to the brothers of monfort in oirschot to take some pictures. in the garden in front of the monastery, there was a huge red beech, which immediately made an impression on me (see page 19). The tree has always been a part of my life. i drive out there regularly, to have a look at it and enjoy its mighty presence. it is still very vital and stands proud as a peacock. The tree stands out because of the colour of the leaves in the summer and its elegant shape in the winter. but for me, the tree is at its most beautiful when the leaves are just opening. in my opinion, there should be a red beech in each park or park garden! To ensure a deep-red colour, i would advise using the the ‘riversii’.


Bernd Kleinworth (sales and advice germany and austria):Prestigemy favourite tree is the acer freemanii in all its varieties, but i like the variety ‘Jeffersred’ (previously autumn blaze) the most. The maple was the result of a crossing between acer saccharinum and acer rubrum. The most compact types have a beautiful orange-red autumn colour, which develops particularly well after a hot summer. When i started working for van den berk, in the autumn three years ago, i was impressed by all the autumn colours at the nursery. one plot with freemaniis really caught my eye. it almost looked like it was on fire. They are enormous eye-catchers which can withstand pavements and uv rays very well. This makes it the perfect tree to give boring areas more ‘prestige’.

David Lebanchu (sales and advice spain)Giantas it is the only southern-european at van den berk, the olive tree has to be one of my favourites. especially the very old, gnarly specimens which can be found here just outside of the town, are beautiful. another favourite is the sequoia dendron giganteum, because of its enormous size. The average height of a full-grown giant sequoia is 70 meters, but some can grow to over 90 meters high. The circumference can be up to 30 meters! The thick, fibrous bark has protected the trees against forest fires for centuries, and explains why they can grow so old. in america, where the tree comes from, a tree has been found which is 32 centuries old. standing next to one of these giants in an otherwise silent forest is a unique experience. They emanate a peace and power which is hard to explain.

Floriade 2012:

Theatre in nature“Be part of the theatre in nature, get closer to the quality of life.”This is the slogan for floriade 2012. The World horticultural expo, held in the netherlands every ten years, will open its doors on april 5, 2012. This time the event will take place in venlo, in the southeast of the netherlands, near the german border. Trees will be playing a very important role in the large grounds, measuring 66 hectares. in the last few years, more than a thousand trees have been planted. starting points in the planting scheme were diversity and special species.

Tree-lined avenue with 120 speciesa central axis runs from the main entrance into the park. This axis has been developed into a tree-lined avenue with

120 different types of avenue and street trees. a beautiful range of leaf colours has been selected, varying from green and yellow to red and variegated. The same is true for the leaf shapes and habit, from delicate and transparent to very dense leaves which are larger than your hand. signs with names and descriptions will all be placed with the trees, ensuring that the avenue inspires all visitors, both private and professional visitors, when it comes to tree selection. When the floriade ends in october 2012, the avenue will become the green leisure area of the future venlo greenpark.

Supplies since 2008van den berk nurseries has been involved with the floriade since 2007. after long consultations, trees for the avenue and the five different themed fields were selected at the nur-sery. mostly larger trees were selected, from stem girths 25-30 to 45-50. already in february 2008, the first trees were put on a transport to venlo, to give them plenty of time

to get used to their new location, before showing them to the public. The result is an impressive collection with many special species. The tree list on the following page gives you an indication of the types of trees van den berk has supplied for the floriade.

Topiary treesvan den berk nurseries also supplied the floriade with special topiary trees, such as this Tilia cordata in size 70-80, pruned in tiers. This tree is also called the ‘triple tabletop’ as it was quite often used to be planted on village squares, the place where people met each other. The tiers all had a meaning: the top tier stood for the church, the second one for the dignitaries and the lowest one for the common people.

Many a mickle makes a muckle… Large selection in sizesvan den berk nurseries has a broad but in-depth range of trees, rhododendrons and shrubs. This means that the range does not only include many different species, but also a large selection in sizes within each species. Trees start from size 16-18 and are available up to a stem girth of 225-250 cm. shrubs and multi-trunk trees are available in heights from 60/80 to 900/1000 cm and rhododendrons are available from a height and width of 40 to 400 cm.

Interesting flowering treesall trees are beautiful in their own way, but flowering trees always get some extra attention. many garden owners, but also people living in urban areas, appreciate the colour that the flowers bring. flowering trees accentuate the seasons. They are a precursor of spring or give the summer an extra edge. some varieties have a lovely smell or attract butterflies and bees. flowering trees add colour and make people happy. reason enough to put a few of these trees in the spotlights.

Exuberant or subtleit may not always be visible, but all trees, apart from sterile cultivars, carry flowers. flowers are nothing more than the first stage in the formation of seed. in certain trees the flowers can hardly be seen, others have very subtle flowers, and yet other types flower exuberantly. on its plots, van den berk nurseries has flowering trees of various types and sizes, both well-known and lesser known species. you are more than welcome to come and see them in the spring or the summer, but here are some examples of flowering trees, including some which you may not have thought of.

What is grander than a stately full-grown tree, which has had every opportunity to develop? nothing, according to us! Whether a tree is standing in the middle of a landscape, in a park, on a square or in your back garden, it adds something everywhere. Whenever you are at a place you feel good in, have you ever wondered how it would look without trees? unless you’re above the tree line, it would all look a lot less attractive without trees. Trees are indispensable for our wellbeing.

Social museum piecesThere is a reason why people flock to the parks on sunny days. people feel comfortable in the presence of large trees. They look great and offer shade and coolness on hot days. areas with full-grown trees are a great place to be. Trees are the perfect environment to relax, have a picnic, play a game or chat. These museum pieces still have a very social function.

Old trees = sustainable trees as we are now enjoying the trees which the generations before us planted, we can let future generations enjoy a green legacy. That is why it is important to include trees in new (building) plans at an early stage. not just to fill up the gaps, but as decisive elements in the outdoor space, with enough room to grow. unfortunately, that still does not guarantee a long tree life. Town plans can change and hinder trees in their development, trees can be struck down by disease or, in the worst case, chopped down before they reach adulthood. it is important to stress the sustainability aspect of greenery. old trees are sustainable trees, but trees which have the potential to be sustainable do not always grow old…

Conditions for a future treeTo ensure a tree becomes sustainable, in the sense that future generations can enjoy them, a number of conditions have to be met. • Start by selecting a good quality tree. A tree which has

been replanted regularly and which has been able to develop a healthy root system. a tree with a well-formed crown, which has been skilfully pruned and supported.

• Also select a tree which has been cultivated in a sustainable manner. in the end, we want to create a green legacy.

sustainably cultivated trees are less vulnerable to external influences, because they have a stronger natural resistance to diseases and pests.

• Select a tree that suits its habitat. Don’t only think of soil type, but also other factors such as wind, frost, pavement and humidity. more information about these issues can be found in the tree book ‘van den berk on trees’.

• Select a species which has the potential of becoming old. in principle, these are the trees which grow more slowly. during growth, smaller cells are formed which harden better. The heartwood in the trees is harder and more durable.


• When habitat is affected by climate change, then select a species which is expected to be more resistant to these effects. (see inset)

• Select a location for the tree where it has enough room, both above and below ground. Take into account that a tree from the first growth category needs around a cubic meter of space underground per growth year.

• Make sure the tree is professionally planted. The location should be assessed beforehand, and if necessary the soil should be improved. The trees should also be properly anchored.

• Ensure proper support pruning during the first few years, for the formation of a beautiful, balanced crown.

There are, of course, many other factors we are unable to influence, but by adhering to these rules, you are giving your tree the best start for a green future.

for a shopping mall in the centre of kortrijk, van den berk supplied 11 pinus parviflora ‘glauca’, in the sizes 400-450 and 450-500. The trees were planted in concrete planters, 46 meters up. The trees, which weigh around 1500 kg each including root ball, are anchored above and below the ground.

The former military barracks, close to the centre of madrid, was given a completely new function a few years ago. The complex now offers a place to live and work for young city-dwellers, there are spaces for exhibitions and other cultural events, and a park has been laid out. as planting for the pedestrian area robinia pseudoacacia ‘nyirsegi’, in the sizes 25-30 and 30-35, were selected.

it has already been more than ten years since van den berk nurseries supplied several hundreds of metasequoias for the mathildelaan and surrounding area. The trees have now reached a height of around 10-12 meters and form a beautiful fresh green surrounding for the philips stadium, home turf for the football club psv.

for more than 58 years, the efteling has been one of the most beautiful amusement parks in europe. The park, which started out as just an ‘enchanted forest’, was expanded year after year, and has now grown into an international attraction. its unique concept and creative and extremely detailed realization resulted in the efteling winning the iaapa’s Thea classic award in 2004. The beautifully laid-out and well-kept ‘green’ surroundings in the park are also praised. van den berk nurseries has been supplying trees to the efteling for years. during the previous planting season, multi-trunk pinuses and gleditsias were planted for the new ‘east station’ and we also supplied several large rhododendrons for the ‘fairy Tale Tree’.

This private garden alongside a blocked off creek was com-pletely redeveloped in 2008 and 2009. van den berk nurseries supplied many different types of large trees, which immediately gave the garden a mature look. a picnic table with room for 40 people was built around the six roof planes size 50-60.

for the multifunctional centre ‘freizeitscentrum Xanten’ on the Xantener südsee, several thick roof planes were planted close to the harbour last autumn. The twenty plane trees have a stem height of 275 cm and a stem girth of 35-40 cm.

last season, van den berk rhododendron gmbh supplied 58 rhododendrons measuring 60 cm to 120 cm high for the central square in riga. These trees were planted in containers to brighten up the square and to function as boundaries for the many outdoor cafés.The photos show the species rhodo dendron ‘cat. boursault’, rhododendron ‘cat. grandi florum’, rhododendron ‘english roseum’ and rhododendron ‘nova Zembla’.
