T~:!r~et~i:~:v:n~:;:sa~;?r'::eo~~s~ edition of the newspaper.

It also promotes the 132 page book which has been published to more formally mark our 40th birthday.

The book is called Chroniclillg tlte News. It contains a precis of the sto ries a nd

photographs which have highlighted the pages of Navy News over the past four de<:ades.

The articles and their iIIustra-

mirror the activities of the Roya l Australian Navy and its personnel.

They take the reader from those days of the World War II warship and the l'essels which were to replace them. They tell of Australia's move to acquire its own submarines, of the change from propeller to jet turbine aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm and the gradual switch from gun to missile for prote<:tion and attack.

The pages tell of

the VOYAGER tragedy and the RAN's in vo lvement in the Viet na m a nd G ulf Wars.

They tell of our sailors' involvement in humanitarian , civil aid and peacekeeping operations.

Visits by members of the Royal Family are highlighted.

The 1988 Bicentenary celebrations, in which the RAN played a vital role, are cov

ered. The purchase of excil-

ing new ships and helicopters is outlined and as Navy News has done for 40 years, that is, r epo rt the good and the sad , the linal pages of this special publication touch the WESTRALlA tragedy.

We have not been able to COl'cr el'cry itcm. We have done our best and hope thai stories, photographs a nd their accom pa nying explanatory notes will provide readers with a sele<:tive chronicle of our lirst 40 years.

The boo k has been printed by Topmill Pty Ltd at Marrickville in Sydney.

F itness 'C'omes from a combi nalion o f Iraini ng sessions not the occasional one otT. Even Ihough we

understand this. lhere will be days when we should be training butjuslcould not be boIhered.

We miss a session. then another and soon we foml a habit...a habil of not training. It is easy to justify missing a lraining session. So whal 00 we do? We gel motivated and stay motivated.

Goal selling to be discussed later is one way. Here are a few others:

• Train with a friend- Partners provide that lillie extr..L push when needed . if nol by banging on your door to gel you up for Ihe morning walk or run . then by making you feel guilty knowing that you promised to meet them after work at lhe gymnasium.

• Choose actil'ities yOIl enjoy- It ·s hard 10 motivate yourself to do things you know you will dislikc. This applies to training as well. If you don't like performing lunges whcn training yOUf legs. change the exercise 10

squals or leg presses. If you don'tlike aerobics usc thc step machine or go for a run. For every aClivity you don't like. Irade it for an effeelive one that you do.

• Traifl at a facility where YOIl feel comfortableSlarting 10 train for many people can be an awkward experience made worse by feeling out of place. Almosl all people who begin a form of physical activily feci subconscious about Iheir bodies and by tr..Lining in a gym fuJI of muscle mcn and sl im athlelic women it is easylo loseselfconridence.

A facililY Ihal has friendly staff and members who take an inicresl in your training and welfare provide a more comfortable training environment. A nelball club where you know one or two of the players , an all male aerobics class for the blokes. or better yet training with a friend or group of fricnds from work. Remember you do not need a gymnasium complex 10 train.

• Keep )'ollrdaily trailliflg programme sllort- This is more commonly seen in the weighl room. If your training intensilY is high iI will be hard to remain motivated for a long duration and you will find yourself starting to take short cuts by miSSing an exercise here and there. The more faligued you become the harder it is to remain molivated. With this in mind it is also advisable 10 do your harder activities before your easier ones.
