TO SOME of us kids getting a job sounds pretty sweet. The added responsibility and level of maturity that come with employment can be empowering. Of course, having a source of income besides your parents is always a plus to. Being a student, however, one should always consider the sacrifices that must be made in order to have a steady job.

Before getting a job, take into consideration that every student only gets three years of high school, and nearly a lifetime in the workforce. There are plenty of worthwhile extra-curricular activities here at school to take part in, and very little time to do so. Every day graduation draws nearer is a day you could be spending practicing basketball with your teammates and learning the value of cooperation, or performing in a play and experiencing the thrill of sharing another person’s emotions. Work schedules and extra-curricular activities can clash, resulting in unwanted stress. Some employers can be flexible when it comes to school-related happenings, but use caution. If your boss needs you to work, and you feel obligated to do so, you could be missing out on a lot of limited special times. Getting a job can be a great idea, and can assist you to a great extent with important things like financial situations. However, money isn’t everything. There are certain things one should be subjected to and learn from while still young and being educated. Things you simply can’t find in the workforce. Think about what you could potentially miss out on before you fill out that application. Pulling your own weight and becoming a productive member of society, however important, are just not as precious as youth. Don’t let a job take away from your high school experience, or you will regret it forever.

EVERYONE needs advice at some point. You can find advice just about anywhere, but if the advice you are getting is not helpful, just ask me, Lancy! I’m here to help all the students of Granger High School deal with everyday “sticky situations” and help them find solutions.

Dear Lancy,I always get constipated after eating lunch at school, I don’t want to risk coming back late but I like to eat. What should I do?Sincerely, I need stool softener

Dear I Need of Stool Softener,School food might not be the main cause of your constipation; you might need to change your eating habits. My best suggestion would be to eat some foods that help prevent and relieve constipation like; bran cereals that are high in fiber and roughage, root foods like potatoes, carrots, and turnips, leafy green vegetables like celery, spinach, or cooked high cabbage. If the constipation continues to be a problem see a doctor for professional advice.

Dear Lancy, I got a job over the summer and I don’t want to quit when softball starts but my parents want me to so I won’t always be busy. What should I do? Sincerely, I’m stuck

Dear Stuck, Try talking to your boss or manager first. Work out a flexible schedule plan first then talk to your parents and explain the situation and try to compromise.

Dear Lancy,I do not get along with my step-dad. He keeps threatening to kick me out. What can I do?Sincerely,

I hate that guy!

Dear I hate that guy,Maintaining a good relationship with step parents can always be difficult, but it is important to be on good terms with them because they do play an important parental role now. Try to avoid arguments and doing things that would upset your step dad so you do not end up on the streets.

Dear Lancy,I like one of my close friends ex boyfriend. We have recently started to hang out a lot and even though she said it was ok all my other friends are mad and being jerks about it. What should I do?Sincerely, Desperate for him

Dear Desperate for him,Liking a friends x almost

always leads to drama. Even if your friend says it is ok to date them she might just be saying that so she doesn’t seem jealous or unreasonable. As for the other friends, you need to really think about what you are doing. When two friends fight, mutual tend to pick sides and friendships can be damaged or completely lost for ever.

A note to the Lancers! Thank you for all the wonderful and entertaining questions! Sorry I could not answer all of your questions, but I did not forget you! Look for your questions and my answers in the next paper! Love Lancy!

Glee club

DANCE! SING! RAP! CHEER! There is a plethora of talent roaming the halls every day, waiting to be unveiled. Now we have the perfect opportunity to uncover those hidden abilities and use them as we introduce Granger High’s newest organization- Glee club. Although Glee club’s reputation attracts members of groups such as drill, drama, cheer, dance

company, and madrigals, you do not need to be affiliated with any of these groups to join Glee. The intention of the club is to create a fun, friendly group of performers by combining the talents of individuals. Each week we will practice a song chosen and arranged by the club members and learn simple choreography to enhance our quality of entertainment. We work to perform for activities like assemblies, talent shows, and other school functions. “One of our goals as a Glee club is to encourage more school spirit,” says Michael Nguyen. Glee members are advised under the humorous and bubbly personalities of Mr. Johansson

OpiniOn3

IN OUR OPINION

RECENTLY, a group of kids were caught drinking and partying while school was in session. No, they were not doing it in the school building, though that does not stop some people, but it does not change the fact that they were throwing their education away for some stupid fun. I hear stories all the time that start out like, “Dude, I was so wasted....blah, blah, blah,” during school. All I can think when I hear them talk is what the heck are they thinking? People go to school to become educated to better themselves for, not only that specific subject, but to live life in a comfortable manner in the future.

Instead, these certain so-called “students” get intoxicated in the education environment, dumbing themselves down to simply make class a little more interesting. What these students do not realize is that they are terrorizing the possibility of a healthy future later by acting stupid now. I guarantee that any student under the influence in math class is not prepared to advance in the problem solving skills arithmetic has to offer. The same concept applies to any other subject. Little Billy the Drunk will not be capable of giving his English essay the proper attention and concern he typically would if he was not intoxicated, nor will he understand the message and emotions Shakespeare tries to get across in sonnet 78 because he’ll be too busy trying to get rid of the drunken spins. Not only does it challenge a student’s academic education,

alcohol and other illegal substances can destroy a person’s social learning and understanding, as well. Nobody wants to be friends with the kid that reeks of alcohol sweat and constantly slurs. Along with people not wanting to be friends with them, the drunken kid will likely not want to talk to their peers for the fear of being embarrassed because they are smelly and cannot speak articulately. It is a lose-lose situation for both parties. The questions I want answered to is how is getting drunk or high at school, a time of education and learning, worth it? Consuming intoxicating substances can potentially destroy parts, if not all, of the education you need to prosper in life. Does that honestly sound like a good idea? Personally, I vote no. Then again, I’m just a kid who wants to get somewhere in life. What would I know?

WHEN it comes to relationships, I define myself as a complete ro-mantic. Flowers are great, love songs are adorable, and poems are always the best way to make me blush. This being said, I found it almost shocking that a couple would keep their relationship on the “down low”. I never really realized that there are couples out there who choose to not make their relationship public. These couples use secret glances in the halls, text message conversations, and the occasional in-between class rendezvous to keep their relationship out of the public eye. There are some couples who ac-tually work to have no contact in public at all. This makes it less likely for anyone to comment on the relationship. Nothing can be said if there is no evidence. So why do these couples choose to lead such secretive lives when it comes to relationships? I have been racking my brain trying to come up with any reason that would make even the smallest amount of sense. How is the de-cision to keep the courtship quiet made in the first place? Obviously those involved in the relationship have real feelings for each other, or else they wouldn’t bother having a relationship at all. So what’s the point of keeping it hidden from the world? My best guess is that hidden relationships are kept a secret because those involved feel that the secrecy is imperative in order for their rela-tionship to be a successful one. Having made this conclusion, I still found myself curious as to

why the relationships in question would only be successful if kept secret. What is it about this cou-ple that makes their relationship such privileged information? I guess there is always the friend factor to consider. Sadly, as teenagers we have an indescrib-able desire to be accepted. Could this desire be the driving force of all the secrecy? I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to have to keep my relationship a secret from those people who are sup-posed to be my friends. Aren’t your friends supposed to accept you for who you are and not who you have feelings for? My next guess was family ap-proval. I know I have not always seen eye to eye with my parents when it comes to dating. Is it pos-sible that these couples might be keeping their relationship under wraps in order to avoid upsetting or disappointing their families? I can only imagine what strength it must require from those who have to go through so much work to keep that kind of a secret from the people living under their roof. I have learned that it takes an amazing amount of strength and maturity to keep something like a relationship out of the public view. Regardless of the reasoning behind their secrecy I find these people admirable. To be able to rise above all of the silly reasons people choose to have public re-lationships is really an incredible task. We can all learn a valuable piece of information from these “secret couples”, it’s not about how many people saw you holding hands, or who all knows about the special date you shared. The true point of a relationship is to have a bond with one other person, a bond that nobody else has the power to break unless they are given it.

Teen Pregnancy

DID YOU know that one million teens get pregnant each year? That’s over 3,000 teen pregnancies every single day! And still more and more continue to get pregnant each year. It’s very difficult to be pregnant, but even harder if you’re a pregnant teen trying to balance school, family, a job, a social life and have time to take care of a newborn baby. Less than one-third of teens who get pregnant finish High School. “Society treats you different once your pregnant”. Said Artisha Denet (12) “People would give me a lot of negative attention and treated me like I was special or challenged”. –Elyse Dubois (12) Teens that are pregnant not only have to deal with negativity from society but have to deal with the emotional and physical pain. “I felt fat, uncomfortable, temper mental and very scared. I was not prepared for this to happen at all”. –Dubois Telling their parents is one of the hardest things to do for any pregnant teen. They usually feel disappointed or very

angry. “My Mom was upset at first but excited later”. Said Denet “Everything in your life changes after being pregnant” People’s opinions about you can change as well. Many people see teen pregnancy as a very negative or wrong thing. “Young

teens aren’t responsible enough to take care of their own child when their own parents still take care of them”. –Itzel Gomez (10) Being a pregnant teen can be a very challenging, upsetting, and eye-opening experience in a teen’s life, While it can be full of discovery, change, and fulfillment of having a child. WHAT is a Latino rolemodel? A Latino rolemodel is someone of Latino heritage who challenge negative stereotypes about Latino people. Rommel Gonzalez (12) said “I think negative Latino stereotypes are just dumb. Every race has people who don’t behave.” Maggie Ruiz (12) is involved

with many things here at Granger High. Ruiz is a Dance Co. officer, a LAT captain, a Madrigal, an Excalibur and part of the Drama Club. When asked about peoples negative stereotypes about Latino’s Ruiz said “I think a lot of people think we’re more at risk for things like dropping out of school or teenage pregnancy.

People don’t really expect good things from us. I think we should prove people wrong and do great things!”Another great example of a Latino rolemodel is Rommel Gonzalez (12) Granger’s Senior Class Representitive. Gonzalez said “I love being Latino. It makes me different. It allows me to have different experiences.” Gonzalez says he looks up to his parents because they work hard to provide for him, and that makes him want to work hard in return to make them proud. Roger Quinonez (12) is Granger’s Student Body Officer Secretary. Christopher Cahoon (10) is the Sophomore

Class Officer President, Cahoon is half Latino with his mother’s side being of Mexican heritage. Jordan Hernandez (10) is a quarterback for Granger’s Varisity Football team. Hernandez is half Latino with his father’s side being Mexican. Hernandez played in Granger’s little league football

for 5 years, he wanted to play on

the high school team because he wanted to “help change Granger’s reputation.” Hernandez said “I don’t really focus on stereotypes. I see people as they are and expect the same in return.” Other Latino’s on Granger’s Varsity team include Carlos Flores (12), Gustavo Cordova (10), Dannee Hernandez (12), Anthony Lazano (10), Greg Campos (12), Efrain Guzman (12) and Eduardo Ortiz (11).Cassie Bowles (12) is the Vice President for both Dance Co. and Drill Team. Bowles family heritage come from Puerto Rico, she looks up to her aunt who has a program in Puerto Rico that helps teenagers graduate from high school. Bowles said “I am proud to be Latino, it’s a really fun culture to be apart of. I think people shouln’t stereotype us because you never really know people’s different situations so you shouldn’t judge.”

Advisory

latino role-models

THE GRANITE District says that advisory is making a come back. There have been some leadership meetings organized to discuss this matter, but a lot of the teach-ers have just been arguing about it instead of getting anything ac-complished. Some of the teachers feel that advisory is just a waste of teach-ing time. Dr. Van Tassell is one of those many teachers. “I don’t un-derstand why the school district wants to have advisory to come back,” said Van Tassel. On the other hand some teach-ers want advisory because they

can help students with testing and with any problems they might have. There are some teachers that do think advisory could work, like Ms. Jameson. She feels it would be a good idea to have if the school decides what is going to happen in the class. “I liked the testing and getting to know the kids in my class. I think advi-sory would be a good idea to have again.” Advisory does not just affect the teachers. This is an issue and a debate among the students of Granger, as well as the teachers. Students who have heard the news of advisory being brought back have been seemingly disap-pointed. Many of them are asking questions like, “who would want to go to a class for thirty minutes when you just sit there?”

Many students in their advi-sory class did nothing and the teachers just sat around. Teresa Mendiola (12) admitted seeing her advisory teachers do this. “I think it’s kind of a waste of time. I would rather be in a reg-ular class.” Seth Johnson (11) agrees with Mendiola, that advisory should not be brought back. “I don’t like the idea. I think it’s a waste of time when we should just be in class.” Advisory was a way to have teachers get to know the stu-dents and to have students be able to come to them for help if they needed it. Sadly, this has not been the case for mass amounts of students. Advisory is coming back, and people are going to have to wait and see if it is really worth having again.

ONE OF the largest changes in the counseling center this year is the addition of four new counsel-ors: Ms. Oliver, Mr. Olsen, Ms. Bank, and Mr. Babcock. They are there to help out students with many of their needs, such as class chang-es, questions about gradu-ation, PTG print outs, and any personal problems or concerns students may want to discuss with them. Another major change that many may have noticed is the reconstruction of the counseling center. New paint and a less congest-ed traffic pathway makes things in the counseling center much more organized. The class change process is also different from last year. Granger had a mass class change day pre-viously, which allowed anyone who needed to alter their schedule to do it in one day. “Mass change day was chaos. I find the counsel-ors more helpful, and class chang-es a lot more organized now,” said Kellie Belle (12). Now, students must schedule an appointment individually and wait to be called down. With individual appointments, more time is spent on helping

each student with their own per-sonal issues, and steps towards career goals. “I told Mr. Babcock that I was going to fail weight training, and he helped switch me into another class that would give me gym credit,” said Patrick Seiuli (12) Some students have no idea any changes have occurred at all, like Chris Green (11) who said, “New counseling center?! Did they

move it to a new place or some-thing?” There are also some students who have not visited the new counseling center at all. Nermin Begic (11) said he had not gone yet, but is going to go fix a class very soon. It is highly advisable to be aware of the help available to stu-dents and to take full advantage of it. Students should not hesitate to pay the new counseling center a visit if they have any questions or concerns.

ers will do other things as well, such as take late start Monday meetings to work on together on better teaching methods and

teacher collaboration, because no one test can tell you everything.” The District does not require teachers to report benchmark tests scores, but hopes that they will to help improve student learn-ing. The District would also like to hear feedback from teachers, to help improve the tests in any way they think needed. The over-all goal for the benchmark tests is to support student learning and teacher collaboration.

RE-BUILDING GRANGER

WOULDN’T it be great if life was like a videogame? You could get cheat codes from the internet to make life easier. Well I don’t have cheat codes for an extra life or points but I do have some hints and tips for life as a student. As a student you should establish some sort of routine. It doesn’t have to be so strick, but a general “to do list”. Put things that are most important at the top to do first. List academic tasks according to priorities. Set some sort of deadline so you don’t procrastinate. If it is easier, use a planner to track all your tasks and of course don’t forget to reward yourself once in a while for your accomplishments. One thing you should learn is to let some things slide. A reality

Study tipsof life is that you cannot do it all. Its okay to say “No” to certain things once in a while. A lot of work can be overwhelming and stessful. Everything you do does not have to be A+ performance. While its good to set high goals for yourself, be sure not to over do it. Set goals that are difficult yet reachable. Learn to manage time. Don’t waste time agonizing. Time management is essential when you are in school, while doing housechores, extra curricular activities, working and finding time for friends. Find the right time for appropriate subjects. You work more efficently if you figure out when you do your best work. For example if your brain handles math better in the afternoon don’t wait ‘til late at night. Keep all these things in mind if you want a more successful life. Set study schedules, establish routines, let less important things slide, manage time, and always keep it in perspective.

Benchmark test

The area of the current Granger school building is about 230,000 Square feet, and the area of new building will be 350,000 square feet. No part of the old school is staying, it’s all going away and

the students are getting a brand new school building. The construction of the new building will start next summer. There is a committee that meets regularly, and is coming up with a plan over the next 9-10 months. During this time they will be look-ing over every aspect of the new school and making sure it fulfills the needs of student and the com-munity. The community is encouraged to

get involved with the re-building of Granger high. “The broader the group, the more approval on the plans for re-building Granger,” says Jim Day the administrator of construction. An example of something the new building might have that the current school doesn’t have is a common area. This is where stu-dents can relax and mingle with other students. Some have suggested the cur-

“WE’RE so proud!” said Susie Meyers about Kearns Jr. High’s 18% improvement in CRT scores. Kearns Jr. High tried out the benchmark tests last year as an experiment. Kearns Jr. High passed AYP last year for the first time in Kearns history! Sophomores and juniors have heard about the upcoming bench-mark tests at the end of the quar-ter. Here are a couple of things to know about the benchmark tests. The benchmark tests are a way for students to know how well they are doing in mastering basic skills in CORE areas. Benchmark tests will be given in math, Eng-lish, history and science classes, testing students on very basic ma-terial they should be learning in each class. The benchmark tests

are relatively short, only having about one to two questions on various CORE areas, with about 25 multiple choice questions. Unlike the CRT’s the bench-mark tests are not high stake, they are just a way for teach-ers to check how their students are doing in certain class. Some students don’t take the CRT’s seriously because they are afraid they won’t do well, the benchmark test will improve confidence in taking tests and scoring well. Susie Meyers an English teacher at Kearns Jr. High said “I can see a change in students, they take the CRT’s more seriously and they are proud of themselves.” “I have a hard time with tests because some kids just don’t do well on tests, and they might know more than the tests will end up showing,” said Mr. Clark. Roseanne Markham, the Districts English Language Arts Special-ists and creator of the benchmark tests agrees, saying “I hope teach-

rent building is too dark. Natural light is the solution. This will be relatively new to Granger High. The committee wants the new school to have more windows, and more openings where sun-light can come through. The committee hasn’t decided if there is enough money in the bud-get to build a new pool. Whether or not the community will use the new pool is a very important fac-tor in this decision.

According to Principal Cox “We want flexibility to respond to the educational advances in technology that will be coming up in the future.” To do this the plans will include technology that can change and advance with the community. There will be a lot of new things coming to Granger, and they will all help the students and the com-munity to better themselves.

The trainers tried putting my shoulder back in place, but it just wouldn’t go!” Flynn had to go to the doc-tors so he could get his shoulder put back in place. As a week went by, Flynn al-ready had started to go to rehab. He had a lot of support from his teammates and family by being there for him to help him stay motivated to get better. Boys Basketball works to win

THE boys basketball team is getting ready for the next season. With winter approaching fast, they’re getting prepared to play their hardest. The Granger basketball team had some situations last year with some players leaving Granger and some other players quitting the team, but this year the boys are dedicated to be in it until they reach the 5A State Championship. Aldin Alagic (11) is looking

new wrestling coach is here

CHARLIE Peterson is the brand new coach for Granger’s wres-tling team. Along with the as-sistant coach Messager, a former state champion for wrestling. Although Coach Peterson is an alumni from Bingham High School, he now has the heart of

a G-rider. Coach Peterson is excited about the opportunity he has to work with the students here at Granger.

“For wrestling we will be do-ing it WWE style, but first we will need some recruits and I’m look-ing for my little Hulk Hogans, “said Coach Peterson. David Robles [12] is ready to take the mat. Like Peterson, he is a transfer from a different school. Robles has wrestled for most of his life and always gives his best effort in a match. Coach Peterson’s message to this years team: “Expect to win, because that what winners do”. He expects wrestlers to come to practice and bring their A game. There is no room for babies on his team. Peterson will need tough athletes to take on the rest of the 5A region. Even though Granger lost some of their wrestlers last year, those here this year are working their hardest to take it to the limit. They have been working out keeping in shape, and conditioning on their own time. Granger welcomes Coach Peterson, and wishes the wrestling team great luck this season. So let’s get up Granger Lanc-ers and get ready to see how far our wrestling team goes. See how much work they put into this sport. Go to the wrestling match-es and cheer these athletes on.

-hole in one for golf

MOST students are under the impression that golf is a boring sport and don’t know how to play. Many don’t even take the time to learn. For one student at Granger, golf is a great sport, and he loves playing. Robert Clontz (12) is the only student at Granger who was committed to the sport.

He practiced on his own, and participated in every match. Clontz said, “There were a few other kids who joined the team, but they rarely practiced, and they showed up to very few of the matches.”

Clontz started playing when he was eight years old. His dad was the person who got him interested in golf at an early age, and later taught him to play. Clontz has been playing ever since then. Golf is not like all the other sports at Granger in which you practice together with your team and coach. The individuals of the golf team have to go to the golfing range and practice on their own. If a team member wants to practice with someone, he/she could call up a friend or teammate. Granger started their golf season off on August 21st against West Jordan High. Clontz represented Granger in the golf state tournament. The tournament was held at the Valley View course on October 5th-6th. Clontz did not place in this tournament, but ended the game with a score of 118. Granger has not had very many students who are into golf, so it generally goes unnoticed. If you are a sophomore or junior who wants to get involved and has some knowledge of the sport, then you are encouraged to join the team next year. Give Granger a good name and take it to the house.

Ouch! that hurts!

HARD work, dedication, time and effort. These things are highly ex-pected from athletes in any given sport. But one thing that nobody expects is an injury. Getting a critical injury is one of the worst things possible that can happen to all athletes. It is never planned and definitely nev-er wanted. If it does happen every athlete has to deal with it from the moment it happens to the whole recovery process. Keelan Flynn (12) dislocated

running, I jumped in the air and landed on my leg weird. I thought to myself, “is this the end? Can I get back in the game?” As Taliulu watched from the sideline, she knew that she was out for the remainder of the sea-son and there was nothing she could do about it. She was also forced to go to rehab. “Rehab was hard, I got tired of doing the same exercises over and over again. But I knew I had to do it to get back for this upcoming season. Nothing was going to get in my way of getting back out there!” For many, injuries are one of the toughest things to deal with. No matter who the person is they’re just going to have to get bet back on their feet and get through it, just as these athletes did. They never backed down and gave up. Instead, they stayed up and fought to get better. For that they deserve a pat on the back and major props.

everyday. They are also helping each other out with skills they need to work on. Granger is looking to turn their record around from the 08-09 seasons. The boys will have to step it up this year since they lost their starting guards Tre Musgrow and Woul Koyum. This year the players are working on going to region. They want to beat West High this year because they are the school that won region last year. The boys basketball team is taking it to the limit this year. They believe that they have a chance to do well this season. Granger should give them their support by watching the games and cheering them on.

STUDENTS here at Granger High School do not only play sports for the school teams. They play out of school and travel more than one might think. Students here tend to like travel-ing, so they tryout for club sports.

Clubs go almost everywhere: Cal-ifornia, Arizona, Las Vegas, Idaho and more. Granger High students that try out for these clubs have a blast and gain more experience with their sport. Anel Dervisevic (11) is on the Impact team, a soccer team out-side of Granger High. Dervisevic loves and enjoys it. He said, “It’s harder to get on this team than most high school teams.” Baily Gardener (11) is a part of the Club Union 16 Blue, a volley-

ball team she played for outside of school. She is also a player on Grangers own volleyball team. Gardener loved this sport so much she wanted more, so she found out about this club and tried out for it. Not all students play sports for Granger. Some students love to travel and these clubs are the way to go. People get to meet new people and expand their social ho-rizon. It is an experience someone wants to discover.

YOUTUBE is now in the school which is great news. All these years YouTube has been blocked off of our school computers because it contains inappropriate material that is not allowed to be viewed in school. The District has been getting requests from our very own teachers that there are many educational purposes that can be used in classrooms. YouTube has many educational videos that can be used in History, Science, Math, English, and just about any other subject. Regarding all the requests from the teachers, the district has decided to put YouTube on a 90 day trial which will be evaluated from beginning to end. If used as an educational tool the district will keep the website up, but if used for things that are inappropriate and/or non-educational purposes

CANDY, costumes, scares, and thrills. We all know what to do on October 31, but when did the tradition of Halloween originate? Let me take you back 2,000 years ago to where Halloween first be-gan. Halloween or “All Hallows Eve” used to be called Samhain, which means “summer’s end.” Samhain is an ancient Celtic festival that separates the year into two sea-sons - light and dark. On October 31 it was said that the ghosts of the dead return to the earth to wreak havoc and mischief. To ward off the spirits, the Celts burned bon-fires to scare them away. Costumes were started as a way to hide from the spirits and to tell fortunes. Candy was given to ap-pease the spirits so they didn’t wreak havoc, and the Jack-O’-Lantern was originally carved by Irish children out of potatoes or turnips. They did this because of a story about an Irish villain named Jack who was so wicked that nei-ther God nor Satan wanted him. It was said that he wandered end-

lessly looking for a place to rest and his only warmth was from a candle in a rotten turnip. Modern games like “guess what’s in the bowl” came from a popular Irish game. In the game, you are blindfolded and seated in front of a table with bowls. You have to guess what is in the bowl in front of you. Originally, what were in the bowls were mud, beans, coins, and water. These different elements represented as-pects related to life. Halloween came to us when the Irish migrated here. Instead of finding turnips to make Jack-O’-lanterns, they found pumpkins. From then on, they shared their customs and superstitions with us. Over the years people forgot some superstitions and just kept the traditions of Halloween. Now, people see Halloween as a time for eerie ghouls, spooky cos-tumes, and tons and tons of can-dy. This is enjoyed by everybody ranging from little kids dressed as witches and pirates to the older siblings and parents who take them trick-or-treating. Next time you think of Hallow-een remember this - it all started with the Irish and Celts. Have fun trick-or-treating and stay safe, Granger.

the district will lock up YouTube again. Chances are greater if students and teachers use it for educational purposes. YouTube is tracked non-stop, which means that the district can run reports that will tell them what hits the YouTube website is getting from students in the district, which will determine if they will keep it or lock it up again. Mrs. Asay says, “It’s good to allow teachers to utilize that purpose, if only students would use it for educational purposes and not use it for other reasons.” Most people in the school don’t know that YouTube has been unlocked for the last few weeks, and the same for most teachers. The news is getting around faster now that we have more information. Teachers now can keep their classes more entertained by watching videos on YouTube instead of just reading from textbooks, which is pretty boring. So don’t go an abuse YouTube, unless you want it to be locked up again. Keep it educational; don’t use it for things inappropriate for school.

story of why he is what he is. Some start off at a young age. Michael Daw (12) got his first pair of cowboy boots when he was 4 years old from his grand-parents. That is how he started off as a cowboy. Everybody has their own opin-ion on the cowboys. A few people have not even realized they are

around. Pam Carlson (12) did not notice the cowboys until about a month ago. “I didn’t see them until someone brought it to my attention. Then I started seeing them everywhere!” said Carlson.. Most people don’t mind them being around the school. Oscar Wilde (11) does not mind the cowboys at all. They don’t bother

him, the only thing he does not like much is their music. Cowboys have a different kind of fun. Michael loves going to the rodeo. He plans on doing some riding as soon as he can. If you don’t have much to do, why don’t you go and hang out with some of the cowboys and learn how they have a good time.

My experience making these wonderful desserts was actually quite fun! The Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies were quite tasty. They are rich and sweet with the pumpkin goodness and the fact they are always so moist and soft just makes them oh so much better!

Typically for me though I love licking the bowl after and I’m sure there are students here at Granger that loves doing the same thing. I guess You Could say it brings the little kid out of us. The Caramel Apple Recipe however, can be somewhat messy but in the making, it was totally worth it.

I loved the excitement of getting to taste them and when they had finally got done they were delicious with the apple core but of course I’m sure you all have had a Caramel Apple. If not however, I would strongly recommend trying these recipes; they are lots of fun and very tasty to make.Recipe: Caramel Apples from www.Allrecipes.com

INGREDIENTS

5 large Granny Smith apples •

wooden craft sticks •

1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped •

2 tablespoons water •

7 ounces chocolate candy bar, broken into pieces •

2 tablespoons shortening, divided •

1 cup colored candy coating melts •

DIRECTIONS

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Dip apples into boiling water briefly, using a slotted 1. spoon, to remove any wax that may be present in the apples surface. Wipe dry, and set aside to cool. Insert sticks into the apples through the cores.

Line a baking sheet with waxed paper and coat with cooking spray. Place the unwrapped 2. caramels into a microwave-safe medium bowl along with 2 tablespoons of water. Cook on high for 2 minutes, then stir and continue cooking and stirring at 1 minute intervals until caramel is melted and smooth.

Hold apples by the stick, and dip into the caramel to coat. Set on waxed paper; refrigerate 3. for about 15 minutes to set.

Heat the chocolate with 1 tablespoon of shortening in a microwave-safe bowl until melted 4. and smooth. Dip apples into the chocolate to cover the layer of caramel. Return to the waxed paper to set.

Melt the candy melts in the microwave with the remaining shortening, stirring every 5. 30 seconds until smooth. Use a fork or wooden stick to flick colored designs onto your apples for a finishing touch. Refrigerate until set, overnight is even better.
