    LEARN ABOUT CORN AND CORN

PRODUCTS AT THE 2010 AG EXPO

LANSING, MICH. Where can you find

    the newest corn-based products, corn-powered vehicles and a corn-powered

    superhero named Captain Cornelius all

in one place? At the 2010 Ag Expo! Be

sure to stop by Tent A at this years event

and visit the Corn Marketing Program

of Michigan (CMPM) and the Michigan

    Corn Growers Association (MCGA)

booth for lots of great information and

    giveaways relating to Michigans most

    bountiful cropcorn.

The 31st annual Ag Expo, held July

20-22 on the campus of Michigan State

University (MSU), is Michigans largestoutdoor farm show. The show will be

    open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 20

    and 21 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July

    22. Visitors can view demonstrations

    and exhibits on equipment, products

and services of interest to farmers and

    agribusinesses.

    Agriculture is Michigans second largest

industry and corn is the largest crop

grown in our state. The industry is always

changing and we are constantly working

to develop new uses and markets for

corn, said Jody Pollok-Newsom, CMPMand MCGA executive director. That

is why the CMPM and MCGA display

    combines the latest information on

    ethanol, corn-based plastics and fabrics,

    corn heating units, corn-related research,

as well as facts and information to bust

the myths on ethanol and corn. We strive

to show our growers and other Ag Expo

    attendees where the Michigan corn

industry is today and where it is headed

    in the future.

As one of the many exciting uses for

corn, ethanol will be a large focus of theCMPM and MCGA booth. To showcase

ethanol use, a flex-fuel vehicle (FFV)

    and an ethanol-powered snowmobile,

    courtesy of Kettering University, will

be onsite for the public to view. A FFV

can run on ordinary gasoline, gasoline

blended with up to 85 percent ethanol

    and all combinations in between.

In addition to information on ethanol,

    products made from corn-based plastics

will also be on display at the booth. The

    higher price of petroleum-based products

has helped to increase the market formore environmentally-friendly, corn-

    based plastics. Companies are now

    looking to utilize corn-based plastics

    to not only be environmentally-friendly,

but also to make economical business

decisions. They are finding new and

improved ways to make plastic from

corn polymers which biodegrade in a

fraction of the time their petroleum-based

    counterparts need.

Also featured at the corn booth will

    be everyones favorite corn-powered

    superhero, Captain Cornelius. Captain

Cornelius will be available each day

to meet children. There will also be

    balloons, popcorn and Captain Cornelius

tattoos for children, so be sure to visit the

CMPM and MCGA booth to learn more

    about corn.

    Headquartered in Lansing, the CMPM

    is a legislatively-established statewide

program that utilizes one-cent per bushel

    of Michigan corn sold. Investments

are made in the areas of research,

    education, market development, and

new uses in an effort to enhance the

    economic position of Michigan corn

    farmers. The CMPM works cooperatively

    with the Michigan Corn Growers

    Association (MCGA), a grassroots-

    membership association representing

    the states corn growers political

interests since the 1970s. Michiganscorn industry adds more than one billion

dollars to the states economy annually

and in 2009, Michigans corn farmers

harvested a record setting crop of more

than 309 million bushels. For more

information, visit the website of the

MCGA and the CMPM at www.micorn.

    BOOMERS REFUSE TO TAKE OLD

    AGE LAYING DOWN

    (NewsUSA) - Many baby boomers

expect to exercise well into theirseventies, and most plan to live

independently for as long as possible.

    Luckily, companies are designing

products that help boomers retain their

    active lifestyles.

To help consumers find products that

are easy to use at any age, the Arthritis

Foundation developed its Ease of Use

    program, which employs testers with

    moderate-to-severe arthritis to evaluate

    products. The Arthritis Foundation

provides the following tips for boomers

unwilling to let age interfere with theirfavorite activities:

    * Choose exercise equipment that

reduces strain on joints. Baby boomers

love their exercise, so it can be

frustrating when knees, hips and backs

protest after running or cycling. But

theres no reason that boomers cant

make adjustments that allow them to

    continue their favorite activities.

For example, gym rats can find indoor

    exercise equipment specifically

designed to avoid straining hips, kneesand shoulders. The NuStep 4000

    Recumbent Cross Trainer received

    the Arthritis Foundations Ease-of-Use

    Commendation for its comfortable

seat and ability to provide an effective

    upper- and lower-body workout without

    stressing joints.

    * Make bathroom cleaning more

    accessible. Cleaning the bathroom

can often be an arduous task. Bending

    and scrubbing can add unwanted

    pressure to joints and muscles.

Products like Scrubbing Bubbles, anSC Johnson cleaning product, has

    incorporated innovative ways to ease

    unnecessary work from the necessary

evil of cleaning the bathroom. Scrubbing

    Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner is

    a breakthrough cleaning system that

automatically sprays cleaner to eliminatethe buildup of tough soap scum and mold

and mildew stains. The cleaning formula

combines with the water on your shower

    walls to begin working immediately.

    * Eliminate bending and kneeling. As

you age, climbing on chairs to reach

tall shelves or stooping to fish through

    low cabinets becomes less feasible.

Designing your home to put your

possessions in reach can help you stay

    independent as you age.

When purchasing cabinets or otherstorage spaces, look for features

    like adjustable shelving, pullouts and

    extensions. For example, The Diamond

Logix 36 Inch SuperCabinet with Rollouts

and Pullouts has three roll-out trays, dual

storage and two wire pull-out baskets, so

you dont have to reach, kneel or bend to

    access items.

    FLEAS AND TICKS POSE PROBLEMS

    FOR PETS

(NewsUSA) - It happens every summer

-- your dog spends a lot of time outdoors,

whether he is playing, hiking or camping,

only to end up with swollen ticks on his

ears or belly hours later. But parasites,

such as fleas and ticks, are not just a

summer menace. They can infect pets at

    any time.

    Banfield Applied Research and

    Knowledge (BARK), Banfield Pet

    Hospitals (www.banfield.net) internal

research team, recently reviewed morethan 2.2 million health records obtained

from dog and cat visits in 2009. Fleas

are the most common parasite in kittens

under six months, middle-aged dogs and

senior dogs and cats. Their research

also shows that May is the peak season

for ticks, and October is the peak season

for fleas, making parasites an ongoing

    concern for pet owners.

According to the Centers for Disease

    Control and Prevention (CDC), Lyme

disease, which is carried by ticks, is

the most commonly reported vector-transmitted disease. And research

suggests that dogs are twice as likely to

develop Lyme disease as humans living

    in the same area.

    Parasites are more than annoyances

-- they spread disease, not only to your

pets, but to other members of your family

as well. Fleas and ticks are responsible

    for potentially severe allergic reactions,

    tapeworm infections and can cause

severe anemia and death in young, sick

    or debilitated pets, explained Jeffrey

    Klausner, DVM, MS, DACVIM, senior

vice president and chief medical officer

    for Banfield.

Preventing fleas and ticks is a critical

part of a pets health care, but pet

owners should speak to their veterinarian

    before attempting treatments.

Flea and tick preventive care products,

    like powders, sprays and spot-on

    treatments, offer varying degrees of

efficacy and safety. Additionally, the huge

number of products available can make

    selecting the proper preventive care

    product overwhelming to Pet owners,

said Karen Johnson, DVM, vice president

    and client advocate for Banfield.

Getting flea and tick products directly

    from your veterinarian helps ensure

pet safety, as veterinarians instruct pet

owners in proper dosage and application.Pet owners should also ask veterinarians

about flea and tick products approved

    by the U.S. Environmental Protection

    Agency, such as FirstShield.

At Banfield, preventive care is the

cornerstone of our practice -- that

    includes everything from routine vaccines

    and twice-annual comprehensive

    physical examinations to recommending

the safest and most effective flea and

tick preventive product that is right for the

pet and their family, said Johnson.

    SNORING WARRANTS MORE THAN

    EARPLUGS

    (NewsUSA) - Many couples accept

snoring as an inevitable part of nightly

life. But snoring warrants more than

    shrugging your shoulders and buying

ear plugs -- snoring may indicate serious

    health problems.

Snoring happens when the soft tissuesin the back of your throat relax, so they

vibrate as you breathe. If those tissues

get too relaxed, they can actually block

your airway, cutting off your breathing.

    This condition, called obstructive sleep

    apnea, prevents quality sleep. The

brain, not wanting to starve from lack of

oxygen, wakes patients when they stop

    breathing, sometimes hundreds of times

per night. According to the American

Board of Internal Medicine, 50 to 60

percent of those who snore have sleep

    apnea.

Most patients are unaware of the

    problem, because they dont remember

waking up throughout the night. For

this reason, its important to speak to a

doctor if you experience loud snoring,

    excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty

concentrating, sore throat or high blood

    pressure.

Risk factors for sleep apnea include

    being male, being overweight, drinking

alcohol and having a large neck or a

history of nasal problems. The American

Sleep Apnea Association provides a quiz

that can help you determine your Snore

Score, or the likelihood that you have

sleep apnea. You can take the quiz at

    www.sleepapnea.org.

    Obstructive sleep apnea isnt just

annoying. When you stop breathing, yourheart beats faster, raising your blood

    pressure and increasing your chances

of heart attack and stroke. Insufficient

sleep can affect your job performance

and ability to perform basic functions, like

    driving a car.

There are treatments for sleep apnea,

ranging from simple lifestyle changes to

    breathing machines to surgery. Speaking

to your doctor about snoring will not only

improve your quality of life -- it may help

your partner get a good nights rest, too.

10 TIPS FOR BETTER SLEEP HYGIENE

    (NewsUSA) - Between office meeting

and errands, sports practice and studies,

many people sacrifice sleep for a few

more hours of productivity. According to

    the National Sleep Foundation, fewer

than half of Americans report getting

    adequate sleep every night.

But sleep deprivation results in more

than just yawns. Inadequate sleep has

been linked to depression, weight gain,

    hypertension, poor concentration and

    memory retention, and accidents.

Take driving, an activity that most

Americans perform daily. In a recent

    National Sleep Foundation poll, 54

percent of respondents said that theyhave driven while drowsy. Twenty-eight

percent confessed to falling asleep at

the wheel. People know that alcohol

impairs driving, but too few consider

sleep deprivations effect on their motor

    skills. Drowsy driving causes thousands

    of accidents each year.

Setting aside seven to eight hours for

sleeping isnt a luxury -; its a necessity.

    The American Sleep Apnea Association

offers 10 tips for better sleep hygiene:

    1. Set a sleep schedule, and stick to it.

    2. Dont nap for more than 45 minutes a

    day.

    3. Avoid excessive alcohol intake within

four hours of bedtime. Do not smoke.

    4. Avoid caffeine six hours before

    bedtime.

    5. Avoid spicy food six hours before

    bedtime.

    6. Exercise regularly, but not right before

    bed.

    7. Use comfortable bedding.

    8. Keep your room at a comfortable

    temperature.

    9. Block out noise, and eliminate as much

    light as possible.

    10. Do not use the bed as an office,

    workroom or recreation room.

If you feel tired even after sleeping eight

    hours, an undiagnosed sleep disorder,

such as sleep apnea, may be to blame.

In sleep apnea, the soft tissue in the

back of the throat collapses during sleep,

blocking the airway. Sufferers wake up

for a few seconds every time they stop

    breathing, sometimes hundreds of times

a night. Visit www.sleepapnea.org to find

out your Snore Score, or the likelihood

that you have sleep apnea. The disordercan be treated, so its important to speak

to a doctor if you experience excessive

    daytime fatigue.

Playing Doctor with your Home8 Tips for Adding Curb Appeal & Value to Your Home

Curb appeal has alwa ys been important for homesellers. With the vast majorityof todays homebuyers starting their search on the Internet, the appearance of

your property is more critical than ever. You only have a few seconds to catchtheir attention as they scroll through listings online to get them to stop and takea closer look.

But the role of curb appeal goes beyond just making a good first impression. The way your house looks from the street can impact its value. It can alsoshorten the time it takes to sell your house.

We asked real estate agents, appraisers, home stagers, landscape designers, and home inspectors which curb appeal projects offer the most value when

your house is on the market, both in terms of its marketability and dollars. Hereis what they told us:

    1. Paint the house. Hands down, the most commonly offered curb appealadvice from our real estate pros and appraisers is to give the exterior of yourhome a good paint job. Buyers will instantly notice it and appraisers will noteit on the valuation.

Paint is probably the number one thing inside and out, says Frank Lucco, managing partner of Houston-based IRR-Residential Appraisers and Consulta nts.Id give additional value for that. If youre under two years remaining life (onthe paint job), paint the exterior because it tends to show wear badly.

Just make sure you stay within the range of accepted colors for your market. Ahouse thats painted a wildly different color from its competition will be marked

down in value by appraisers.2. Have the house washed. Before you make the investment in a paint job, though, take a good look at the house. If its got mildew or general grunge, just washing the house could make a world of difference, says Valerie Torelli,a California real estate agent with a background in accounting.

Before she puts a house on the market, Torelli often does exterior makeoverson her clients homes, a service she pays for herself to get higher sellingprices. Overall, she says her goal is to spend less than $5,000, with a goal ofgenerating an extra $10,000 to $15,000 on the sale price.

Torelli specifies pressure-washinga job that should be left to professionals.Pressure washing makes the house look bright and clean in addition to gettingrid of unsightly things like cobwebs, which may not be seen from the yard butwill detract from the homes cleanliness when seen up close, she says.

The cost to have a professional cleaning should be a few hundred dollarsafraction of the cost of having the house painted.

    3. Trim the shrubs and green up the yard. California real estate agent ValerieTorelli says she puts a lot of emphasis on landscaping, such as cutting downovergrown bushes and replacing them with leafy plants and annuals mulchedwith beautiful reddish-brown bark. It runs me $30 to $50, says Torelli. Doyou get a return on your money? Absolutely. It sucks people in.

You also dont want bare spots. Take the time to fertilize the yard, throw outsome grass seed, and if need be, add some sod.

    4. Add a splash of color. It could be a flower bed of annuals by the mailbox,a paint job for the front door, or a brightly colored bench or an Adirondackchair. You can get a cute little bench at Home Depot for $99, Torelli notes.Spray paint it bright red or blue and set it in the yard or on the front porch.

Its not a bad idea, but dont plan on getting extra points from an appraiserfor a red bench, says John Bredemeyer, president of Realcorp in Omaha. Itsdifficult to quantify, but it does make a home sell more quickly, Bredemeyersays. Maybe yours sold a couple weeks faster than the house down the street.Thats the best way to look at these things.

    5. Add a fancy mailbox and house numbers. An upscale mail box andarchitectural house numbers or an address plaque can give your house adistinctive look that stands out from everyone else on the block. Torelli makesthem a part of her exterior makeovers Ive gotten those hand-paintedmailboxes, she says. A nice one runs you $40 to $50. Architectural housenumbers may run as high as a few hundred dollars.

    6. Repair or clean the roof. Springfield, Va.-based home inspector andformer builder Reggie Marston says the roof is one of the first things he looksat in assessing the condition of a home. Hell look at other houses in theneighborhood to see if there are a lot of replaced roofs and see if the subject

house has one as well. If not, hell look for curls in the shingles or missingshingles. Im looking at the roof for end-of-life expectancy, he says.

You can pay for roof repairs now, or pay for them later in a lower appraisal;appraisers will mark down the value by the cost of the repair. That could knockthousands of dollars off your appraisal. According to Remodeling Magazines2009-2010 Cost vs. Value Report, the average cost of a new asphalt shingleroof is more than $19,000.

Roofs are issues, Lucco says. You wont throw money away on that job. Yougotta have a decent roof.

Stains and plant matter, such as moss, can be handled with cleaning. Its a jobthat can often be done in a day for a few hundred dollars, and makes the rooflook like new. Its not a DIY project; call a professional with the right tools toclean it without damaging it.

    7. Put up a fence. A picket fence with a garden gate to frame the yard isan asset. A fence has more impact in a family-oriented neighborhood thanan upscale retirement community, Bredemeyer says, but in most instances, appraisers will give extra value for one, as long as its in good condition. Dayin a day out, a fence is a plus, Bredemeyer says. Expect to pay $2,000 to$3,500 for a professionally installed gated picket fence 3 feet high and 100feet long.

    8. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning. Nothing sets off subconsciousalarms like hanging gutters, missing bricks from the front steps, or lawn tools

rusting in the bushes. It makes even the professionals question what else hasntbeen taken care of.

A house is worth less if the maintenance isnt done, Lucco says. Those littlethings can add up and be a very big detractor. When people say, Id buy it ifit werent for all the deferred maintenance, what theyre really saying is, Idstill buy it if you reduce the price.
