From the Desk of Msgr. Dan: Immaculate Conception – Immaculate Reception Lest anyone think that the Catholic culture is dead, one only has to look to other various cultures to recognize how embedded our Catholic culture is, especially in our sports culture. Can any red-blooded American who watches football be unaware of Franco Harris’ catch of a tipped football enabling the Steelers to beat the Oakland Raiders, 13-7 in 1972? The play was dubbed by announcer Myron Cope as the Immaculate Reception, and the name stuck. The pun was set up by the Catholic Church’s teaching of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception is the declaration that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was conceived by her mother, St. Anne without suffering the effects of original sin. The Immaculate Conception is not the teaching that Mary conceived Jesus without sinning. Rather it is the principle that good does not come from evil. If Mary had suffered the effects of original sin at the time of her conception by St. Anne, then how could she have been the mother of God’s son? While all of this may seem terribly academic, I believe that it is (or can be) a source of inspiration for all, especially parents, who take inspiration from Mary. For example, when Joseph and Mary discovered that their preteen son (Lk. 2: 41-52) was not in the caravan as they returned to Nazareth after celebrating Passover in Jerusalem, they searched for him until they found him “in the temple sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them.” (v.46) The nearest words in the subsequent text that indicate the grave concern the parents felt about Jesus’ behavior are found in verses 48 and 50: “When his parents saw him they were astonished, and his mother said to him: ‘Son, why have you done this to us? You see that your father and I have been searching for you in sorrow…. But they did not grasp what he said to them [in response].’” This seems like a polite biblical way of saying that, while Joseph and Mary felt like wringing their son’s neck, they dealt with the incident gracefully. They accepted the fact that their son should have let them know of his intention to stay in Jerusalem and study. Yet Mary “kept all these things in memory.” She savored them even as awkward as this incident must have seemed to her. Besides, what parent is going to be outraged that their child stayed behind for religious studies? Here’s the point: Mary received at the moment of her conception by St. Ann the same grace you and I receive at our baptism. Life with Jesus was full of awkward moments for Mary (understatement intended). She trusted that what she knew and learned from her own graceful upbringing was preparation for her life as a parent. The extraordinary behavior she exhibited in the case cited above was a sign of the way she would handle the most painful of all experiences she endured with Jesus: his execution. The evidence of grace’s reality is to be found in the relationship between Mary and her son. Mary, conceived in grace, lived perpetually in Advent, expecting God to act in a new way awkward though that may be. Like Mary, we are equipped at baptism to live in Advent expectation, considering God trustworthy. Like Mary, the impact and the evidence of grace is to be found in our relationship with Jesus. Now that indeed must be evidence of an immaculate reception. Fr. Dan

Deacon Dabbling’s: Have you ever met anybody trendier than John the Baptist? He certainly wasn’t someone whom you would ask to walk down a runway to model clothes. And his diet of grasshoppers and bugs makes even tripe look good. John was a messenger announcing the coming of the Messiah, but he also came across as a nut case. Think about it! Haven’t you at one time or another encountered someone on a street corner or park challenging people to repent their sins or be condemned? Mary, Justice, and I go to Philadelphia every year around Thanksgiving to visit our son and daughter-in-law and go to the Thanksgiving Day Parade. We have done this for the last 10 years and I can’t remember a time that there was not at least one person doing their John the Baptist shtick complete with loud voice and questionable odors emanating from under the robe. I guess my question is, how does one react to something like this? I’ll tell you how I reacted! I looked, laughed, took his picture with my cell phone and walked away thanking God that he is not a branch on my family tree (although there are some that come close). But John the Baptist was a real person. My guess is that he was probably French. They love eating insects, so long as they're covered in chocolate. He ministered to the real people of his time in order to get them ready to meet Jesus Christ. If he were living in this day and age I think he would probably be arrested for disturbing the peace, be sued for libel, and charged with hate crimes. After all, he called the Jewish Pharisees a brood of vipers and that they will be facing a great wrath. We should probably ask the question, does John the Baptist still walk among us? My answer to that would be a resounding yes! John the Baptist gave us direction. He pointed the way to Christ. Don’t parents, teachers, and others who live a faith filled life also play this role of John in our life. The first place that most people hear of Jesus is not from a papal encyclical or even the Bible. They hear of Jesus at their mother’s knee, from their father’s voice, from a religious sister, or from a teacher. All these people together say, “This is the way; walk in it.” Yes, John the Baptist is still present. But by the same token, Just as you have had the benefit of the prophetic ministry of John the Baptist from others in your life, so are you called to lead others to Christ by the way you live your life. At the end of Mass I often use the following dismissal, “The Mass is ended go forth in peace glorifying the Lord by your life.” That is how we too are John the Baptist. We don’t have to eat bugs or even eat tripe, just live your life as a Christian example to others. Peace of Christ, Deacon Tony

Child Protection and Creating Safe Environments

Child Protection and Creating Safe Environments- Keeping God’s Children Protected and Safe: To know that we are

children of God is to live in complete love, with deep abiding security and the ability to dream, to sing, to create, to laugh, and to play without worry. As we grow older, we face a new reality – we cannot approach all God’s creation with the same trust and confidence. We learn, through sometimes hurtful and damaging experiences, that some people reject the ability that God gave them to love and respect others – they ignore God’s call. The diocesan program to safeguard children helps remind us of

these very facts. With the help of this program, the faithful are guided and educated about the responsibility of how to keep

God’s children protected and safe. To see what the Diocese of Erie is doing to help maintain safe environments,
