MAXFLOW OPEN BEARING SYSTEM
In response to increased demands forbearings that hold up under the highweights and rotation speeds that arerequired to increase drilling produc-tivity, Smith Bits has developed theMaxflow open bearing system.
With enhanced air flow, our bearingsstay cooler longer. This bearing usesnew materials and design criteria thatprovides for optimum performance intodays mining and industrial drillingenvironment.
OD Feature - Diamond enhanced in-serts on the heel row provide pro-longed gage insert life by reducinggage insert rounding. In addition, theyhelp to maintain a full gage hole evenafter the gage inserts are worn away. They also protect the lower leg sec-tion, shirttail area and seals on thesealed bearing bits.
DIAMOND TECHNOLOGY
TD Feature - Diamond enhancedinserts on the Trucut row

I Feature - Semi-Round-Top (SRT)cutting inserts are strategically placedon the shoulder of the bit. These cut-ting inserts reduce your drill costs intwo ways:
- Extended bit life through reducedbit body wear caused by caving holes.
- Improved drill productivity by pro-viding a bit with the ability to drillitself out of the collapsed holes.
LEG PROTECTION FEATURE
This patented feature is ideal for for-mations that cave or collapse on thedrill bit while it is drilling and on drillsthat do not have sufficient compressedair capacity to clean the hole. In highlyabrasive conditions, diamond-en-hanced inserts are used to extend bitlife and productivity.

CUTTING STRUCTURE
Sculptured Inserts - Using the technolo-gies of finite element analysis and 3-DCAD services, Smith Bits has developeda more durable insert. The stress risersinherent in standard chisels are elimi-nated, and a more abrasion-resistantgrade of tungsten carbide is incorporated.Longer extension can also be used to in-crease penetration rates.
SRT Heel Inserts and Recessed Heel -Side-cutting SRT (Semi-Round-Top) in-serts are standard on most Smith Bits TCIand steerable-motor TCI bits. This fea-ture, along with a recessed heel area, ac-tively cuts the gage of the hole and re-duces inthrust loading that can lead topremature seal wear.
Carbide Shapes - Smith Bits offers awide selection of cutting structures forTCI bits, featuring some of the most ag-gressive shapes and durable carbide ma-terials in the industry.
Trucut Gage Inserts - Patented gagesystem uses SRT inserts on gage, alter-nating with either sculptured or conicaloff gage inserts, maximizes gage wearresistance, but minimizes fatigue and heatchecking induced breakage equating tolonger life and a higher Rate of Penetra-tion
W Feature - Proprietary process andmaterial, which adds wear resistant ma-terial to cones. This feature reduces conewear, which can lead to lost cutting struc-ture and premature failure.
E Feature - Extended nozzles providemaximum nozzle exit extension to de-liver the greatest hydraulic/pneumatic en-ergy to the cutting surface. With standardnozzles, the energy is largely dissipatedby the time the fluid reaches the holebottom. With extended nozzles, however, flow velocity and energy levels at thehole bottom are maximized. This featureis avilable in most 7 7/8 inch and largerbits.
S Feature - The steel backflow valve actsas a check valve to reduce the amount ofwater and cuttings that get into the bitthroat and bearing. This is beneficialwhen drilling in wet conditions or mul-tiple pass drilling - available in 6 3/4 inchand larger TCI bits.
Nail-in Nozzles - Provide for easy instal-lation and removal of nozzles. Availablein 6 3/4 inch and larger TCI blast holebits.

Advanced Spinodal metallurgy increases weight and rotation speed capaci-ties. Advanced material, such as Kevlar, makes this system virtually BulletProof.Patented side reservoir system built to survive the rigors of blast hole drilling.Bits run smoother, generate less torque, and drill longer and faster.
Asymmetrical design protects key components and allows for unimpeded andrapid escape of cuttings from the hole bottom. Preferential orientation of thenozzles for efficient bottom hole cleaning. Larger cross sectional areas to handlethe toughest drilling environments. Net result: Improve ROP and longer bitlife.
Patented gage system uses SRT inserts on gage, alternating with either sculp-tured or off gage inserts, maximizes gage wear resistance, but minimizes fa-tigue and heat checking induced breakage equating to longer life and a higherRate of Penetration
Proprietary process and material, which adds wear resistant material to cones. This feature reduces cone wear, which can lead to lost cutting structure andpremature failure.
QX Vector - Unique sculptured shape delivers faster ROP (rates of penetra-tion) in medium to medium soft formations. Insert orientation and proprietaryTCI (tungsten carbide inserts) combine to reduce potential of breakage throughside loading.QX Interior Conical - New geometry and proprietary TCI grades. New shapeputs more carbide on the hole bottom and new TCI grades improve wearability, producing higher ROP throughout the run.QX Gage - New crest geometry and TCI grades produce ROP that is sustain-able throughout the run in abrasive drilling conditions by putting more carbideon the hole wall.
QX Edge - Shaped to provide enhanced hole wall and bottom hole cuttingaction. The results are longer life and higher cutting rates.

PILOT HOLE PLUSCutting elements on the heel row are Diamond Enhanced Inserts, they prolong gage insert lifeby reducing gage insert rounding and help to maintain a full gage hole even after the gageinserts are worn or broken away. It also protects the lower leg section, shirttail area and sealson sealed bearing bits. Reduced wear on stabilizers is an additional benefit.
With dome-shaped Diamond Enhanced Inserts on the heel row, a more aggressive chiselshaped insert can be used on gage for optimum penetration rate.
Ideal for low to medium compressive strength formations that are highly abrasive.

Bit and Rig Tips
The Suggested bit down pressures and rotation speeds in this catalog are guidelines. On-site testing is usuallynecessary to find the down pressures and rotational speeds that result in the best performance.
Use straight drill steel with properly maintained threaded connections.Use a good grade of thread grease and maintain connections properly.Use care attaching and removing a bit from the drill pipe.Open air valves before starting to drill with a bit and keep the air on until the bit is out of the hole.Break in a new bit by drilling at reduced down pressure and rotational speed for a short period. To collar or start new hole, reduce down pressure and rotation.Re-establish bottom hole pattern with reduced down pressure and rotation when drilling is interrupted.Never finish an old hole with a new bit. This can pinch the cones, damaging the bearings and gauge teeth.Always maintain drilling air pressure at appropriate levels.Rotary speed should be decreased as down pressure increases.Do not use more water than is necessary to control dust and maintain hole wall.Maintain rotation while tripping into or out of a hole.In wet holes, maintain CFM (Volume) as high as possible.Guard against dropping the bit and drill steel to the bottom of the hole at high speed. High speed impact is a commoncause of damage.
Periodically inspect the bit for damage or impending failure. Non-uniform cone temperatures may indicate obstructed aircourses and potential bearing failure.
Before an idle period, clean the bit by passing air or water through it while rotating the cutters by hand. After an idle periodand before re-using a bit, make sure all cones turn freely by hand.
Procedure for NEW bit break-in and start-up of bits IDLED for a minimum of two (2) hours
#1 is for new bit break-in and start-up of bits which have been idle for 2 hours minimum. This includes CHARGER QX sealed bearings.
1. If the outside air temperature is 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) or below, special care must be taken to prevent expensive premature bit failures due to freeze ups.
A. Before drilling with bit, open bit air valve and circulate air through bit, with water off, for a minimum of 10 minutes prior to drilling.
B. Before shutting down drill, while rotating on hole bottom, turn water injection off and pruge air system and bit for a minimum of 5 minutes.
C. If a CHARGER QX bit has been idle for a minimum of 2 hours, operate the bit at 50% of full load and rpm for a minimum of 10 minutes.
#2 is for break-in of new CHARGER QX Sealed Bearings only.
2. Use this table as a guideline for new CHARGER QX bit break-in
OBJECTIVE: This will gradually get grease up to operating temperature before full load and rotationalspeed is applied. This will also allow time for grease to fully lubricate and coat the bearing surfaces.
AIR VALVES MUST BE OPEN BEFORE STARTING TO DRILL WITH A BIT AND REMAIN OPENUNTIL THE BIT IS OUT OF THE HOLE.
