Müller Thurgau D.O.C.

To most connoisseurs this tiny region in Italia is merely an interesting afterthought for wine; to say it is remote is an understatement. Luckily, few ever discover this zone, as there are less than 385 hectares of vines (800 acres) in the whole D.O.C.! Valle d’Aosta’s most important white varietals are Müller Thurgau and Pinot Gris; Anselmet’s Müller Thurgau is unique, with a remarkable, fresh herbal presence on the nose. Its bouquet includes plantain, lemon pith, and sweet thyme, which emanate in layers.

Pinot Noir

In many ways, the Alpine region of Valle d’Aosta is ideally suited for Pinot Noir. Its high altitude ensures a long ripening period, the direct sunlight on the valley walls is intense and encourages plant health, and the incredibly rocky soil has remarkable drainage. Anselmet’s Pinot Noir has deep black cherry fruit aromas that are reminiscent of classic Syrah. The palate varies a touch with more tart red fruit, including Bing cherry and raspberry, and it is rounded off with a full body and soft tannins that compliment the complex berry aromas.

Le Prisonnier From among the world’s greatest vineyards, “Le Prisonnier” hails from an altitude of nearly 3,000 feet above sea level, nestled in between glaciers, in the Alps of the Valle d’Aosta region of Italia. It is produced from vines that are over 60 years-old, and planted in densities of over 10,000 vines per hectare–the most impressive vine age/density combination we have ever seen. Harvested in November, at first snowfall, the complexity is otherworldly. The name, which means “The Prisoner,” comes from the fact that these grape clones come only from their own little valley.

Petit Rouge D.O.C.

From perhaps the best producer in Valle d’Aosta, and certainly one of its smallest, comes this fantastic Petit Rouge. Incredibly clean and vibrant, it is a scintillating array of red berry fruit and crystalline transparency. The palate bursts forth with tart berries including Bing cherry, raspberry, blackberry, and marionberry, rounded off by tarragon, moist forest floor, and woodsy stems.

Henri Syrah

Anselmet is arguably Valle d’Aosta’s finest estate; Henri is the son of winemakers Giorgio and Bruna Anselmet and the namesake of their 100% Syrah. All the fruit is from the “Rogiet” cru vineyard in the commune of St. Pierre. The flawless use of oak carries over in a mesmerizing manner for this wine. It spends 12-13 months in second passage French oak–no new oak is used, to avoid masking the clarity. Textbook class is the result, with black peppercorn, dried saddle leather, and violets coating the vibrant fruit on the palate.

Torrette Superieur D.O.C.

Petit Rouge is perhaps Valle d’Aosta’s most important varietal. Not only is it exquisite in its expression, but it is almost entirely unique to the region, growing virtually no where else in Italia. Anselmet’s top Petit Rouge is the Torrette Superieur, touched with a bit of Cornalin and Fumin. As crystalline as stained glass, with remarkable brightness, combined with a lush body, this is unusual and quite admirable for such a high-mountain fruit.

Vincero! I.G.T.

“Maestro” Sanguineti, Toscana’s beloved winemaker and enological ambassador, has made a white wine compliment to his popular Nessun Dorma SuperTuscan. In fact, Vincero! takes its name from the last line of Nessun Dorma, and means, “I will triumph!” And indeed, we believe he has, with this terrific blend of the increasingly popular Vermentino with Malvasia Bianca and Chardonnay. Crisp yet lush, it’s approachable enough to sip alone, yet will pair with serious foods.

Chianti D.O.C.G. From our favorite “Maestro,” Antonio Sanguineti, comes this wonderfully delicious Chianti, made in a friendly, approachable style that is rich and powerful, yet great with food. Antonio lived as a boy in Chianti, near Siena, and despite his famous prowess with Brunello and SuperTuscan wines, has always considered Chianti the wine closest to his heart. Here, he partners with his close friend, Luca Pattaro of Il Ciliegio in Sicilia, to make a great everyday wine that is perfect with all Italian foods.

Rosso di Montepulciano D.O.C.

This classic “little brother” of Vino Nobile is the product of a beautiful collaboration between Tuscan wine guru Antonio Sanguineti and the famous Lombardo estate of Montepulciano. With Lombardo’s storied expertise and Sanguineti’s skilled palate, this Rosso di Montepulciano is full of enticing dried cherry, but remains intriguingly moodier than many other styles and clones of Sangiovese.

Caruso Quite simply one of the most interesting wines we have ever tried from Italia, Caruso is, to use an unusual descriptor, visionary. Antonio “Il Maestro” Sanguineti has brought together three of his closest friends from across Italia– Giuseppe Lonardi in Valpolicella (North), Alessandro Bocci in Toscana (Central), and Giuseppe Martorana in Sicilia (South), to make a single wine from the three major zones of Italia. Perhaps best described as a “SuperItalian,” it is a “baby Amarone” meets “baby SuperTuscan” meets Sicilian Nero d’Avola. Wow!

This classic “little brother” of Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino, is one of the great values of the Italian wine world. Nessun Dorma I.G.T.

“Nessun Dorma” is the favorite aria of “il Maestro” Antonio Sanguineti, and this wine is one of our favorite accessible, friendly blends. With vines carefully selected from all around Toscana, including Sangiovese from Capraia e Limite (Montalbano), Merlot from Gavorrano (Grosseto), and Syrah from Suvereto (Livorno), the Maestro has made a true “SuperTuscan.” The Merlot is intensely floral and elegant, while the Sangiovese is fresh and bright. The Syrah adds depth and body, offering a bold expression of forest-floor truffle, ripe cherry, and blackberry preserves.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G.

As a category, Vino Nobile is among the best values to come from Italia. Sanguineti’s Nobile is made from 100% Prugnolo Gentile, a wilder, more rough-hewn clone of Sangiovese than the Grosso from Montalcino. Its aromas are an intriguing swirl of cherry, moody plum, and orange tea. Aged in oak for two years, it is age worthy for over a decade. Powerful yet elegant, this is a classically styled Nobile, that is as pretty as it is potent.

Made by Matteo Buffagni (Barbolini is his mother), this organic Biorosso Lambrusco Grasparossa of Castelvetro, is a rich, dry, expressive bubbly of fantastic elegance and joviality with essences of sweet rhubarb, violet blossom, raspberry tort, and a touch of earthiness.

Since 1889, the Barbolini family has made wine on their tiny estate. In that time, they have perfected their Lambrusco. Their Lancillotto is not a sweet wine, but delightfully briny and a bit dry, with a lush, generous body. The ripe-fruit sweetness and raspberry aromas are lifted into the nose by the delicate bubbles. It is absolutely beautiful in the glass and enticing aromas emanate from the glass to draw one in.

Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G.

Antonio Sanguineti’s Brunello is a powerful, decadent expression of Marasca cherries, black tea, coffee beans, and pomegranate. The tannins are smooth, silky, and well integrated; this wine will age for over 20 years. Nick-named “il Maestro” by his colleagues, Antonio is a master of creating the perfectly balanced wine. We believe he’s achieved it here again, as after 42 months in French oak barriques it is amazingly approachable.

From the family estate of opera singer Andrea Bocelli comes this classic Sangiovese, a wine which has been made on his family’s vineyard for over 130 years. Through Andrea’s suc-cess, the Bocelli family has taken delight in sharing classic Italian passions–music and Tuscan wine–with the rest of the world. Now, their own Sangiovese, aged in French oak barriques, is available for everyone to enjoy. From the family estate of Andrea Bocelli, in Toscana comes In canto. Named after Andrea’s first studio album, this is a dense, powerful, lush Cabernet Sauvignon that fills the senses. With just a few hundred cases made, every plant is fussed over, and every bottle counts. Alberto Bocelli, winemaker and brother to Andrea, makes this wine with a genuine passion for the French-origin varietal. In their soils of Lajatico, near Pisa, the ripening season is longer than many areas of Toscana, and their Cabernet expresses itself exceedingly well. A decadent wine with genuine character.

Alcide I.G.T.

Made from 70 year-old vines of Sangiovese, and extremely bright, lush Cabernet Sauvignon, Alcide is named for the grandfather of Alberto and Andrea Bocelli. With the tiny case production, it is a true SuperTuscan from the family farm of perhaps the most famous, modern-day Tuscan of all, Italian tenor–Andrea Bocelli. Deftly and generously coopered with exceptional French oak barriques, the old vines lend a terrific minerality and intensity to the wine that cannot be duplicated by young vines, or large production. A very rare treat for the discriminating Italophile or classical music aficionado.

Poggioncino Rosso Toscano I.G.T.

From the family estate of international opera sensation Andrea Bocelli, we are proud to present “Poggioncino,” a Sangiovese as tasteful and classic as the famous Tuscan himself. Aided by brother Alberto and sister-in-law Cinzia, they did not decide to export their wine until they met Small Vineyards, and we couldn’t be happier that they did. Dried cherry, sage dust, and ripe berry are the hallmarks of this wine.

A smashing value, this Southern Italian blend is wonderfully smooth and balanced. Made from two of our favorite “under-rated” varietals, Montepulciano and Aglianico, Casa Contini’s Biferno Riserva is atypical of many of its ungainly Southern counterparts, whose alcohol tends to be too hot, and fruits overripe. Rather, it is like a Northern Italian in its cool smoothness, with a smoky blackberry, chestnut, and peppery-sweet aroma that delights the senses.

This is the wine that the Bocelli family drinks for daily pleasure. A classic Tuscan blend, it even includes a white varietal, Malvasia Bianca, used widely in Chianti in the past for balance and intense aromas. It is less common today because it is not deemed “commercial,” but in small amounts, provides lovely acidity and brightness to the fruit. Using classic Umbrian varietals such as Grechetto and even Procanico, Altarocca has a deep respect for tradition, but also a highly modern approach to winemaking, using low yields, sustainable methods, and the best technology. This wine is bright and sunny, with citrus and granite overtones.

Classically rose-scented and touched with bouquet of lychee, their Gewurtztraminer is very Alsatian in style, naturally powerful and expressive. Cesanese, Lazio’s most important grape varietal, is thriving in the hands of Mariano Mampieri, a Roman who believes it can be the “Pinot Noir of Central Italy.” We think he’s on to something. The Simcic family has owned their estate for over 100 years. Winemaker Aleks Simcic recognized the pedigree and potential of the family vineyard, and has worked to bring the estate to brand new heights. Triton Lex is the estate’s top white cuvee, a classic blend of French-origin varietals that absolutely sing with brightness, acidity, and polish from some of the the best soils in Europe. Fermented and aged in French barrique, this wine deftly avoids any “oakiness,” and instead exhibits an effortless lushness, supported by the incredible quality fruit.

If one ever desired to challenge Bordeaux in a blind tasting, winemaker Aleks Simcic’s Kolos would be THE competitor to knock any Bordeaux champion off its pedestal! Bold statement? Hardly, if you have Kolos as your secret weapon. Understanding the supreme pedigree of this wine is simple, as one taste vividly displays the entangled, sultry finese of pine oil, cherry liqueur, bilberry, and dehydrated blueberries, blended with steeped tea leaves, liquid smoke, cinnamon stick, fern leaf, and dirt road minerality. Kolos is truly Slovenian in its purest expression.

Bright, fresh and mineral-laden, it also has a delightful sweet cream essence to it, derived from local autochthonous yeasts that ferment 11 months in French oak. His obsessive work-ethic, combined with a fanatical desire to unleash and bottle the flavors of his soil, have driven Miani to ever-smaller single cru bottlings (as evidenced by this 80 case Chardonnay). Exotic pineapple, guava, and green banana tantalize the palate before giving way to sumptuous praline, graham cracker, gingerbread, and marzipan. The earthy nuances of wild thyme, rosemary, and menthol round out this spectacular wine.

Sauvignon D.O.C.

Originating from Saurint and Banel Cru vineyards where deep calcareous soils exist, these oily, but elegantly restrained Sauvignon Blanc grapes defy what growers in this area usually achieve. Both nose and palate display succinct herbal overtones of fresh-cut grass, nettles, and wintergreen that float nimbly over acid-tinged pink grapefruit and gooseberry, while nuances of white nectarine, jasmine, and narcissus mingle seamlessly to offer mesmerizing equilibrium to this stunning wine.

A spectacular example of Friulian master, Enzo Pontoni, this Sauvignon is beautifully viscous, mineral-laden, and structured. It will age beautifully for 20 years. According to The Wine Advocate: “...Sauvignon Saurint is a power house. The wine possesses notable thrust and length on the palate, with superb ripeness of fruit and a warm enveloping personality. There is plenty of minerality underneath, but the wine remains mostly about a full-bodied expression of fruit.”

Miani’s Ribolla Gialla is a hymn to purity and power of the varietal. This late ripener is the last picked of the whites, and tends toward a gooey effect on the palate with honeyed overtones followed by prickly acidity that cleanses the weight instantly. Other traits include banana cream pie, Asian pear puree, candied Meyer lemon peel, nutmeg, Linden flowers, lavender honey, and thyme. Texturally gratifying and unctuous, Miani’s Ribolla is truly mind boggling, as the density is so effortlessly balanced due to the laser focused acidity.

Another awesome effort from Enzo Pontoni, his 20 year-old vines have given rise to this opulent Merlot. Black plum confit, boysenberry, freshly ground cinnamon, and balsamic syrup coat the palate before the anise, cigar box, dusty gravel, and pine resin sweep the weight from the palate with unmatched poise. With sweet toasted oak, it is a wine of spectacular richness and intensity. In the end, it seems, vocabulary fails this wine–it is simply, indescribably delicious.

Polished poise, great mystique, and graceful power encircle the copious, seductive layers of velvety blackberry, boysenberry, and cassis fruit while fresh thyme, grill char, cigar wrapper, graphite, balsam wood, espresso beans, and wild violets counterbalance the density of fruit with crystalline focus. The purest and most transparent style of Refosco we have ever encountered.

If there is such thing as a SuperTuscan white wine, Sara Bianco, Alessandro Bocci’s counterpart to the wildly successful Sara Rosso Toscano would certainly qualify. Made from a fascinating blend of two classic Toscano varietals: Trebbiano and Malvasia Bianca, and two classic French varietals: Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc; each of the four wines are vinified separately, then blended slowly to test their integration at each step. Olive Oil

Alessandro Bocci takes his olive oil more seriously than anyone we have met. He hand picks all of the olives off the 700 trees on his property, when fruit is half green, half black. With a combination of three types of olives, he masterfully blends an intense, fruity olive oil with incredible viscosity. The oil is cold pressed to 81˚F, so as not to overheat the oil and burn off the flavors; he then filters the oil through a large-grained paper filter. Prosecco Extra Dry

Made from the Prosecco grape that is indigenous to the Veneto region, this sparkling wine has subtle flower and fruit aromas that make the palate deliciously light and playful. Unlike many Champagnes, it is not harsh–rather, it tickles the throat with a peachy softness, and is flecked with minerality that remains simple in the best of ways. Perfect perlage make it the ideal choice for any occasion.

Puntoevirgola Prosecco Brut V.S.A.Q.

“Punto e Virgola,” which means “semi colon” in Italian, is–according to winemaker Paolo Trevisiol–a playful nod to “that under appreciated piece of punctuation that implies we’re not finished yet.” In short, this bubbly is so delightful, we are never quite finished with it. Made in the Charmat method, it is very affordable, with delightfully small bubbles and a concentrated briny complexion that is perfect for the Prosecco grape.

Prosecco Rosé Brut

From Paolo Trevisiol, maker of our ever-popular Extra Dry Prosecco, we proudly present his breathtaking sparkling Rosé, a light, effervescent delight that dances on the tongue with fresh berries, lively acidity, and gentle bubbles. Trevisiol’s trademark minerals shine through, making this wine serious while being delightful. A great value and the light cherry blossom pink color is gorgeous in the glass, it’s a new seasonal staple brought to the U.S. in limited supply.

Assisi Grechetto D.O.C.

St. Francis of Assisi famously said: “Everyday, preach the gospel–and when necessary, use words.” Translation: let your actions do the talking. The Valle di Assisi estate, owned by the Bianconi family, certainly lives by this credo. Sparing no expense, famiglia Bianconi has carved out a name for themselves, with their 4-Star Resort and Spa surrounded by their ultra-manicured, spectacular vineyards. Humble and hardworking, they delight in surprising people with their continuous excellence. Here, this Grechetto is a stunner–brisk, bracing, clean, with honeysuckle and pineapple notes.

Ceccomatto Sangiovese Umbria I.G.T.

Using Sangiovese, the principle red varietal of central Italia, Valle di Assisi distinguishes themselves with this slight variation of an Umbrian classic. Blended with Merlot, this wine achieves more body and softens the tannins of the Umbrian clone, but maintains terrific freshness and acidity. With aromas of violets, cranberry, acacia wood, and rhubarb, this wine improves any meal it accompanies. This is the house wine in the family’s own “Recanto” restaurant, one of the best ristoranti in the region.
