Trigeminal NerveLargest mainly sensory + motor3 branches

Opthalmic br.- entirely sensory- passes thr. sup. orb. fissure Branches: lacrimal nerve frontal nerve naso-ciliary nerve

Naso-ciliary : cornea sclera nasal septem lateral wall of the nose

The maxillary nerveEntirely sensory :- supply the whole maxilla :

teeth,mucosa,lip,sinus,hard &soft palate , nasal cavity, & naso-pharynx.

passes thru foramen rotundum- pterygopalatine fossa- susp.sphen.palat.gang.

Br. M.N. : -To the orbit -short sphen.p.n. -long sphen. p.n. : both reaches nose thru

spheno. p. foramen -The greater. p.n. : reaches palate thru g. p. foramen

Cont. : the palatal roots of first& second molars sometimes by gr.p.n.

-the lesser palat.ns. : soft palate & uvula -a small pharyng.br. from the gang. to reach

the nasopharynx.

Max.N.Brs. : - zygomatic n. ; temporal br.,facial br.

(supplying skin over zygoma) -post.super. dent n. : along post. Aspect of

maxilla & enters the bone 1 cm above & behind third molar. Br. To buccal ging.&supply upper molars except m.b.root of the first molar

Cont. -middle s.d.n. combines with ant.s.d.n. -Max.n. traverse infer.orb.fissure under the mucoperiost. of the eye-ball in a groove. Here

it gives m.s.d.n. when it enters the infra-orb.canal &before it leaves the

canal it gives the a.s.d.n.

Cont.: -from the foramen arises : Infraorb.n -br.: palpebral, nasal, labial.

Mand.N. : -supply all teeth,mucosa,skin,ant.2/3 of the

tongue.. -both sensory & motor. It leaves the skull

thru foramen ovale & here it is joined by motor

root. Supply all muscles of mastication (bucc.m. by facial n.)

Cont.: it is deeper to lateral pterygoid m. Supply all muscles of mastication (bucc. m. by facial n.) when it leaves foramen ovale it gives n. to medial pterygoid. It proceeds to otic gang. & then supply tensor tympani & tensor palati

Cont. : after it divides into : -ant.div. of mand. nerve which is mainly motor (later.,masseter, temporalis) & sensory long buccal n. at the level of

occlusion in front of masseter &supply cheek, oral mucosa, gingivae.

Cont.mand.n.: -poster.div.of mand.n.:1 -lingual n.: on the med.pteryg.& when it reaches the lower border of lat.pteryg it is joined by chorda tympani from the facial n.to convey sense of taste to ant. 2/3 of the tongue

Cont.: above mylohyoid line&in relation to lower 3rd.molar,then it divides into br. to togue, floor of mouth, mucosa.

2- Inferior d.nerve: deep to lat.pteryg.&seperated from med. Pteryg. by sphenomand. ligament to reach the foramen. Before entering :it gives mylohyoid br. to mylohyoid m.&

anter. belly of digastric m. Then it supplies molars& divides into mental &incisive ns.

3- Auriculo-temporal n.: supply parotid gl. It arises by two roots -embrace middle mening.artery & then unite medial &

behind the condyle. It supplies T.M.J.& parotid gl.+auricle. Parasympathetic fibres(ecretomotor to

parotid gl. are picked up from otic gang.
