Psalm 97:1-6, 12The Lord Reigns

The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.Fire goes before him and burns up his adversaries all around. His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory.

Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!

Sermon:“Like the Son in Holiness”

Matthew 18:6-9

With His cross on the horizon, Christ presses His likeness into His own. If they are to bear His image, they must begin where He began—humil-ity. This is first and most foundational to Christlikeness. Indeed, we are called to become like Him who became like us to save us from our sin. Now He rearranges His teaching vignette to show what the humble in Him value. Views lead to values. This passage builds on the foundation of the last, graphically illustrating the extraordinarily grave seriousness of sin—both in soliciting and succumbing. Divine holiness colors the scene. We see that Christ-centered humility leads to Christ-centered holiness. Here we have the call to be like the Son in holiness.

Lord, Have MercyFor what we have done and left undoneWe fall on Your countless mercies. For sins that are known, and those unknown,We call on Your name so holy.

For envy and pride, For closing our eyes; For scorning our very neighbor. In thought, word and deedWe’ve failed You, our King; How deeply we need a Savior.

(Chorus)Lord, have mercy,Christ, have mercy,Lord, have mercy on us.

For what You have done, Your life of loveYou perfectly lived, we praise You.Though tempted and tried, You fixed Your eyes; You finished the work God gave You.

And there on the tree, A King among thieves,You bled for a world’s betrayal. You loved to the end, Our merciful friend; How pure and forever faithful.

For hearts that are cold, For seizing control; For scorning our very Maker. In thought, word and deedWe’ve failed You, our King; How deeply we need a Savior.

I Will Wait for You (Psalm 130)Out of the depths, I cry to You.In darkest places, I will call.Incline Your ear to me anewAnd hear my cry for mercy, Lord.

Were You to count my sinful ways,How could I come before Your throne?Yet full forgiveness meets my gaze.I stand redeemed by grace alone.

(Chorus)I will wait for You. I will wait for You.On Your word, I will rely.I will wait for You. Surely wait for You’Til my soul is satisfied.

So put your hope in God alone.Take courage in His power to save.Completely and forever, wonBy Christ emerging from the grave.

Now He has come to make a way.And God Himself has paid the price,That all who trust in Him todayFind healing in His sacrifice.

I will wait for You. I will wait for YouThrough the storm and through the night.I will wait for You. Surely wait for You,For Your word is my delight.

Jesus, Thank YouThe mystery of the crossI cannot comprehend,The agonies of Calvary. You, the perfect Holy One, crushed Your Son,Who drank the bitter cup reserved for me.

(Chorus)Your blood has washed away my sin.Jesus, thank You.The Father’s wrath completely satisfied,Jesus, thank You.Once Your enemy, now seated at Your table,Jesus, thank You.

By Your perfect sacrificeI’ve been brought near.Your enemy you’ve made Your friend.Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace,Your mercy and Your kindness know no end.

Lover of my soul,I want to live for You.

See the Destined Day AriseSee the destined day arise!See a willing sacrifice!Jesus, to redeem our loss,Hangs upon the shameful cross;Jesus, who but You could bearWrath so great and justice fair?Every pang and bitter throe,Finishing your life of woe?

(Chorus)Hallelujah! Hallelujah!Lamb of God for sinners slain!Hallelujah! Hallelujah!Jesus Christ, we praise Your name!

Who but Christ had dared to drain,Steeped in gall, the cup of pain,And with tender body bearThorns, and nails, and piercing spear?Slain for us, the water flowed,Mingled from Your side with blood;Sign to all attesting eyesOf the finished sacrifice.

Holy Jesus, grant us gracein that sacrifice to placeAll our trust for life renewed,Pardoned sin, and promised good.Grant us grace to sing Your praise,‘Round Your throne through endless days,Ever with the sons of light:“Blessing, honor, glory, might!”

Shepherd’s Reading:Matthew 18:5-9

“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

“Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eter-nal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.

Psalm 130My Soul Waits for the LordA Song of Ascents

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD! O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy! If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
