Dear Parents,

Have you ever wondered what you may be up to in the year 2029? What the world may look like then? Who will be the superpowers? What will transport be? What technology will be available to us? How big will Melbourne be? What employment will be available? Which of the current jobs will not exist and what new jobs will there be? What will the housing affordability be like?

Why 2029? What is the particular relevance of that year? 2029 is the year that this year’s Foundation students will graduate secondary school.

We are preparing our students for a world that will look vastly different to today. The world is changing at a rapid rate and we are preparing children for the unknown. How do we do this? It is about helping children to be able to collaborate, synthesise, problem solve, goal set, strategise, communicate, regulate, have a strong faith, negotiate, take ownership of their actions and behaviours and have the necessary literacy, numeracy and ICT skills to negotiate this ever changing world.

As I walked around Trinity this week I saw children engaged in learning tasks within very contemporary, collaborative and flexible learning spaces. Students that are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and use their knowledge of Choice Theory to help them negotiate and create healthy relationships with others and manage their own emotions and behaviour. Coding of robots was occurring in the Discovery Centre, providing children with the opportunity to challenge themselves and develop their ICT skills well beyond what we could have even imagined only 5 years ago. Sr. Joy

Last week Sr. Joy tendered her resignation at Trinity to allow her the time to concentrate on her health. Sr. Joy continues to undergo treatment and is being well looked after by the Presentation Sisters. On behalf of everyone at Trinity I thank her for her efforts at Trinity over the years and I wish her all the very best with her recovery. Sr. Joy hopes to visit Trinity when she is well enough, until then she has asked that her privacy be respected. If you would like to send a card to Joy please hand it in at the Office and we will pass it on.

Pastoral Care / Playgroup / Cook-Ups

The following arrangements are in place to cover the areas that Sr. Joy looked after:

Pastoral Care – Kathryn Pepper’s role is Student Support and Religious Education Leader. This includes the responsibility of Pastoral Care.

Playgroup – Will continue on Tuesday mornings with Dianna Woolf. Cook-Ups – Sr. Joy would regularly organise cook-ups to provide freezer meals that

can be accessed by those families in need. Thanks to Kerryn Cerchiaro (President Parents and Friends) who has volunteered to take on this role. Her first cook-up was yesterday and Luisa Locandro, Julie Maddocks, Melissa Yong and Jo Knezevic assisted her. I thank them for their efforts. If you know of families that could use this assistance could you please contact Kathryn Pepper.

Second Hand Uniform Shop – Thanks to Lisa Ferracane who has offered to run the uniform shop in the Readman Hall. More details of opening times in this newsletter.

Insight SRC

Each year at Trinity we ask staff, students and parents complete an Insight SRC survey that gives us feedback on our performance. We use this feedback to inform our future planning. All grade 3-6 students will complete the survey and we will be randomly selecting 60 families. The survey can be completed online or as a hardcopy, all responses are anonymous. Directions on how to complete the survey are contained within the package.

Excursion

Yesterday our Grade 2 students enjoyed an excursion to CERES investigating animals and plants as part of their Earth Science and Design Technologies unit. Thanks to the teachers for organising the extra-curricular activity for the students.

RE Staff Spirituality Professional Learning Day & Morning Mass with Fr. Brendan

On Monday, Trinity staff participated in their RE Staff Spirituality Day with Sr. Rose Duffy and Rose-Marie Prosser. The day focused on exploring Jesus in the Gospels and recontextualising the Gospel messages through our RE teaching and learning and through our thoughts and actions. Today, staff celebrated morning Mass with Fr. Brendan at 7.45 am. This was our first Staff Mass in the Trinity Chapel and we are very fortunate to have a sacred space for our school community. We thank Fr. Brendan for his time and leading us in prayer this morning.

Reflection

God created us, loves us and forgives us when we sin. He wants us to be kind to each other. Jesus tells us about his kingdom. This kingdom is not just something that is to come. The signs of the kingdom are around us now, and can be seen in the goodness and kindness of people.

Possible discussion Who has seen weeds in a garden? What is the difference between a weed and a plant? When you care for a plant, the weeds still grow. In today’s Gospel, what did the farmer do when he found weeds in his crop? The farmer did not want to damage the good crop by destroying the weeds God is like the farmer. What are the good things God looks for in us? We pray that the Spirit helps the good in us to grow.

ST VINNIES WINTER APPEAL A BIG thank you to all the students and families that supported the St Vinnies Winter Appeal last Friday. Together we raised about $250 dollars and filled many bags with clothes and blankets to be donated. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Choice Theory (Trinity’s approach to supporting students to understand their behaviour)

At Trinity, we are continuing to explore Choice Theory as a way for students to understand their behaviour and how to manage themselves both in good times and bad. Choice Theory states that all behaviour is communication and that it is our best attempt to get what we want. In the process, we may break laws, disregard rules and hurt others but those are really just side effects of doing the best we know how to get our needs met. We are all doing our best—some of us simply have better tools, resources and behaviours at our disposal than others. Choice Theory focuses on assisting our students to build resilience, enabling them to identify how they are feeling, why they are feeling that way and what they can do to manage these feelings. It also emphasises the importance of building positive relationships with each other. Choice theory provides us with “Seven Caring Habits” and “Seven Deadly Habits” that affect our relationships with others. Underlying these habits is the extent to which we are attempting to control others with our behaviours. We are ultimately responsible for pushing people further away through our words and actions or making our relationships stronger. We are happiest in relationships where we are able to satisfy our basic needs, feel supported and loved, and feel that the other person is not trying to control us.

Take a moment to reflect on your own lives……. Where do you find yourself sitting when it comes to relationships with the important people in your lives?

Why do you think this is so? What deadly habit could you possibly attempt to change in order to make your relationships stronger?

Will what I say or do bring us closer together (Caring Habits) or Will it push us further apart? (Deadly Habits).

William Glasser

If you would like more information about Choice Theory, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

SEASONS FOR GROWTH PROGRAM Dear Parents, Trinity is offering an Australian educational program called Seasons for Growth for children in our school who may have experienced a death in the family, moving house, serious illness, family separation or another form of change. Loss and grief are issues which affect all of us at some stage in our lives. Learning to deal effectively with these issues is central to personal well being and happiness. Unresolved grief can also affect a student’s learning. The Seasons for Growth program explores issues such as change, loss, managing feelings, coping strategies and support networks with children. Seasons is a small group, eight session program. Sessions run for 30 - 45 minutes. Targeted programs have been developed for children in Junior, Middles and Senior Levels. It is recommended for greatest effectiveness, that students participate in Seasons from between 6-12 months after the experience of loss. We are looking to commence a Junior Seasons group (years 1&2), a Middle group (years 3 & 4) and a Senior group (years 5&6) during Term 3 and 4. The groups will be facilitated by myself, as I have undergone training in this program. If you believe the Seasons for Growth Program would assist your son or daughter, we encourage you to talk to them about this program. Should he/she decide to participate please fill in the permission form below and return it to the school by Friday 28th July. If you would like to discuss this program further, I am happy to speak with you. Once expressions of interest are received, I will contact you to let you know the viability of running the programs and which school term it will be facilitated in.

Trinity is pleased to be able to offer this important program and we are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those involved.

Yours sincerely Kathryn Pepper Religious Education / Student Support

Further details are available from the school office. All parent/guardian helpers must sign in at the office before proceeding to the classrooms. Your current Working with Children card must be displayed at all times when working in the classrooms and attending excursions.

TRINITY CAR PARK ETIQUETTE For greater safety and visibility, we are requesting that all

drivers reverse park into the marked bays.

Thank you all who use the pedestrian crossing area. You are demonstrating to your children correct road safety practices. Once children cross the pedestrian crossing into the parking area, they, for their safety, need to be placed into vehicles promptly. The car park is NOT a meeting area.

The lane around the edge of the car park (closest to the oval) are for vehicles waiting to pick children up from the Pick-up Zone ONLY.

The two parking bays closest to the office path are the PICK-UP ZONES. These are NO STANDING zones. I f your children are not ready to get into your car as you pull up to the pick-up zone, you must continue on and rejoin the end of the pick-up queue.

There is NO RIGHT TURN when exiting the car park. All vehicles must turn left for the safety of others and to maintain traffic flow.

THE GATES CLOSE AT 9.00am AND RE-OPEN AT 3.00pm. Occasionally they might re-open slightly later due to school activities.

Thank you for your patience and consideration of others.
