Trinity Concert Series Presents Greg Zelek, Organist, February 24, 2019, 2:30 p.m. Praised as “extraordinary in the classical music world” (Jon Hornbacher, PBS Wisconsin Life), Greg Zelek (26) is considered to be one of the best young concert organists today. Paul Jacobs (Chairman of the Organ Department at the Juilliard School who played at Trinity last year) highly recommended Zelek as the ideal organist to feature in this year’s Concert Series. Zelek is the Principal Organist of the Madison Symphony Orchestra and Curator of the Overture Concert Organ Series. Greg regularly performs with orchestras throughout the U. S. as both a soloist and a professional ensemble member. Greg holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, as well as an Artist Diploma from the Juilliard School as a student of Paul Jacobs. Before moving to Madison, Greg was most recently Music Director and Organist at the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew and St. Timothy in New York City. This concert will be performed on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. on Trinity’s 50-rank Holtkamp/Reuter pipe organ and will feature works by Liszt (Liebestraum No. 3), Bach (Trio Sonata No. 3 in D minor), Vierne (Symphony No 1 in D minor), Guilmant (Organ Sonata in D minor) and more. February 2 & 3 - Two Offering ServicesThe offering plate will be passed twice at our Saturday and Sunday worship services on February 2 and 3. The first in support of our Homeless Sack Lunch Ministry (13,000 lunches handed out in 2018) and the second for our normal needs.

God bless our offerings these services and always! O give thanks to the Lord!

Finance CornerFor I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will hear you. Jeremiah 29:11-12 ESV

Trinity Downtown gained momentum in 2018 resulting from our investments in new staff and pastoral resources, additional outreach activities with the downtown arts community, a new electronic marquee, renewed marketing efforts and the cultivation of relationships begun with Harvey-related service projects. These efforts were reflected in our growing attendance and improved financial health. Your gifts play a direct role in supporting what God is doing through us.

From a financial standpoint, 2018 was a “turn around” year for Trinity:

• Offerings exceeded budget. Due to your generosity, our 2018 tithes and offerings exceeded the annual budget by over $131k (or 7%) and were 2% higher than in 2017! We are starting 2019 in a much stronger financial position than we have in years.

• Continued debt reduction. We reduced our operational debt by over $470k from $1.132 million to $660k during 2018, and completely rebuilt our emergency fund. The outstanding loan for our organ refurbishment was reduced by 44% to under $80k.

• 2019 Home Treasury pledges. We received 138 Commitment Cards for 2019, totaling over $1 million dollars! This is a 24% increase over commitments made for 2018 and represents over 56% of 2019’s tithes and offerings budget.

God has strategically placed Trinity Downtown’s ministry in a burgeoning area of Houston where new housing and entertainment opportunities are drawing more families to work, play and live. The field is, indeed, ripe for harvest. I’m excited to see what God has in store for us in 2019!

In His Service and yours, Ron Lacy, CFO

Satellite Service’s Super Bowl of Chili and Football “Sunday” - Saturday, February 2nd

On Saturday, February 2nd, at 5:00 p.m. in the Upbring Multi-Purpose Room, the Satellite Service will host its 2nd Annual Super Bowl of Chili. The worship service is intended as a clear presentation of the gospel based around the Christian testimony of some of the NFL’s most dynamic players and passionate followers of Jesus. The service will feature the praise music of the Satellite Band and a video based sermon featuring the testimonies of Damario Davis, Kurt Cousins, and Case Keenum.

The Satellite Service community encourages you to invite your friends who love football and want to know more about Jesus. As part of that service, anyone who wants to be baptized will have the opportunity to meet Pastor Dorn and Pastor Hofmann at the baptismal font and receive God’s promises and blessings.

Plan to stay after the service for fellowship and our chili bar with all of the fixings compliments of HeBrews.

Koerselman Chimes Dedicated You may have noticed that we have a beautiful musical addition to our pipe organ, a 21 note set of chimes. These chimes were donated by Herb and Arlene Koerselman in memory of their daughter, Lisa Koerselman.

The Reuter Organ company installed this set of vintage chimes from their inventory of what they call “good stuff.” The 21 tubes are 6 feet to 32 inches in length and play the A below middle C to the F that is almost two octaves higher. They are heavier than most made today and produce a beautiful deep, clear tone. The chimes hang from a new custom striking unit that was designed to fit the vintage tubes. The total weight of the tubes and the electric action is over 300 pounds.

These chimes will be used in worship and for concerts to provide one more beautiful sound color to our magnificent pipe organ. To God Be the Glory!

Reaching the City Gala on Sunday, March 24, 2019, at 6 p.m.

Thank You TrinityDear Friends at Trinity Lutheran,

Thank you for the generous check received from you recently in connection with the Fall Food Drive for St. Joseph Social Ministry. As always, you are so generous and helpful and we are most grateful.

Gratefully, Sister Lucia

Save-the-Date Buffalo Bayou Park Service ProjectFriends, please save the date: Saturday, April 13th, 8:30 a.m., for a service project in our immediate community, serving Buffalo Bayou Park (BBP).

BBP will have us doing some manual labor on a Saturday morning in April to serve and beautify our park. Buffalo Bayou is the Houston Ship Channel and a length of it flows under I-45 at Houston and Washington.

Please wear closed-toe shoes or boots with long pants and Trinity shirt. Ages 8 and younger may not volunteer. Ages 9-17 must have parent’s consent. One adult (21+) chaperone for every 10 youth (9-17) is required. Save the date and join us for a neighborhood service project. Call/text Pastor Hofmann at 915.500.2993 if you have questions.

Sack Lunch Ministry UpdateOn behalf of the Sack Lunch Ministry, I would like to thank the people of Trinity for providing funding, support, prayers, and encouragement for this ministry. Last year we handed out 12,294 lunches to the homeless and hungry. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who give their time to make this happen.

Trinity has a rich tradition of helping the less fortunate. Prior to having an organized ministry dedicated to giving out meals (which I believe began in 1995) sack lunches were provided by the Church staff. Isaiah 58:10 reads, Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out

from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. This is one more way in which Trinity joyfully shares Christ’s saving love with all people now.

Shalom in Jesus, Rick Berg

God’s Peace Trinity Downtown! I pray that the start to your year has been going well. New beginnings oftentimes bring on new challenges or exciting changes. Some of our senior students are currently working diligently to get scholarship applications in as well as deciding what college to attend. Some of our students are inching closer and closer to the monumental milestone of confirming their faith alongside you, their congregation. Some of our students are simply just starting a new semester of school and are continuing on with the regular highs and lows of life. No matter what new things or changes are coming in the lives of the youth at Trinity Downtown (as well as you) one thing continues to remain the same, and that is the Gospel of Christ’s death and resurrection. A timeless truth that is able to unify and give identity, belonging, and purpose to all generations.

This then leads me to an exciting youth ministry update that I would love to share with you all. I have been blessed with the opportunity to partner with Lutheran High North (LHN) on finding ways to serve their (and our) students. At the start of the new semester I had the honor of giving the chapel message as well as start a weekly Friday morning Bible study. This is another opportunity to have vital face time with Trinity students attending LHN while starting new relationships. In addition I am able to learn some of the unique things that hinder the lives of teenagers in Houston, all the while sharing the never changing Gospel.

As this is an exciting new step forward in youth ministry here at Trinity there still is much work to be done! I would be honored to invite you all to join me and Jesus on this mission to share Christ to our youth. One simple thing I encourage you to do the next time (and the next!) you are in worship is to get to know a student or two and then pray for them. In addition I ask that you continue to pray for the youth ministry as a whole specifically the Youth MAT (ministry action team), and the youth mentors who all have been an absolute joy to work with and are devoting much of their time to helping establish a healthy youth ministry that focuses on the never changing Gospel of Christ’s death and resurrection. It is an honor to be here in Houston serving alongside you all, I continue to look forward to many great New Years at Trinity Downtown!

40 Days For LifeIf you’ve been listening to the news “life” is making some progress. A few abortion clinics around the country are closing. But the war is real. Planned Parenthood is fighting very hard for the right to kill babies and make it tax payer funded.

Pastor Black has chosen Tuesday, March 12th, as Trinity Downtown’s day to silently protest at Planned Parenthood, 4600 Gulf Freeway. Please consider giving two hours of your time on that day to quietly sit or stand in prayer to speak for the unborn. You will not be asked to speak with anyone or do anything other than stand or sit in prayer.

In 2018 we gave 1,158 baby blankets to the Coalition for Life’s Big Blue and Baby Blue Buses. That’s 1,158 mothers who chose life over abortion. Our baby blanket ministry has given away 6,886 blankets since we began in 2011. That’s 6,886 babies who are alive today because of the work we have done.

Please message Jan Case at 281.392.5899, 713.677.4286, or [email protected] if you would like to volunteer.

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.” Isaiah 5:20

“Love One Another”“Love one another as I have loved you”

may seem so very impossible to do.

But if you try to trust and believe, there are many great joys that you will receive.

For love makes us patient, understanding and kind. And we judge with our hearts and not with our mind.

For as soon as love enters the heart’s open door, the faults we once saw are not there anymore.

And the things that seemed wrong begin to look right, when viewed in the softness of love’s gentle light.

For love works in ways that are wondrous and strange, and there is nothing in life that love cannot change.

And all that God promised will someday come true, when you love one another, the way HE LOVES YOUI

I do not have the reference for this, except it has such beautiful, wonderful, biblical implications about how we should live our DAILY lives!

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

Julie Bertrand, Retired R.N.

Greetings from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis!I am nearing the end of one of the longest breaks I have had in a long time. But even when I’m not in class or going on a trip, I still manage to keep myself busy. Working on campus, playing basketball with the Preachers, preaching at my field work congregation, and wedding planning has given me plenty of things to do over the last few weeks. Add to that emceeing a trivia night at my fiancée’s congregation right before classes begin and I manage to keep a pretty full calendar. I suppose most of you can relate, though. Work, school, exercise, taking kids to various events, visiting family and friends, going on business trips, managing a household, and the list goes on and on. Regardless of what stage in life you are in, you are undoubtedly busy. I know I’ve written about this before, but we recently had a snowstorm come through the St. Louis area that kept most people homebound for a couple of days. It was an odd feeling being holed up in my apartment for such an extended period of time, not being able to go out and keep my previously planned activities. I couldn’t just hop in my car and go wherever I wanted to, as I am so used to doing.

This weather event was not so catastrophic, but it certainly did slow things down. I’m sure anyone who lived through hurricane Harvey in 2017 can recall their experience in vivid detail and the emotions they felt at the time and in the wake of the storm. I’m sure there was plenty of fear, sadness, frustration, anger…and hope. Storms like these, which come in and disrupt our lives, tend to humble us. For all of the knowledge and technology at our disposal, we are virtually powerless in the face of these forces in creation. But in the midst of these events, of these encounters with humility, we turn to the Creator of heaven and earth, who upholds all things by the word of His power. This is what our Lord desires – that we seek Him and trust Him. God speaks and we trust. He gives us hope in the midst of life’s trials. We may not understand what is going on around us, but the Creator of the universe does. Our Lord calls us to trust Him, and in doing so, to follow Him.

Regardless of what kind of busy-ness you find before you, I encourage you to commend it to Christ our Lord. Whether it be sitting behind a desk, working construction, doing homework, changing diapers, listening to hurting hearts, cooking meals, or being stuck in your house, you are God’s dearly loved child

in Christ and you are His instruments in this world. Exciting or mundane, your life matters and you are part of this creation that God is restoring. Whether you feel like everything is going your way, like life couldn’t be any worse, or anywhere in between, trust our God with it all. Rely on Him to bring you through whatever you encounter. God bless you in this season of Epiphany, as we reflect on the almighty maker of heaven and earth manifesting and joining Himself to us in His suffering servant, His own Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Col. 3:15-17 ESV)
