Pennings from your priest . . . Recently, a parishioner of Trinity shared “10 Rules of Respect + 1” that was a bulletin insert from an Episcopal church this person visited awhile back. They had been given to the rector of the parish by a colleague, and have been shared, the rector said, with numerous parishes and vestries. In his introduction to the 10 Rules the rector wrote, “The Body of Christ depends on healthy communication. Healthy communication helps build a healthy community and can produce powerful ministry. Unhealthy communication can unravel us and keep us from being effective in our ministry to share Christ’s healing with the world.”

Here are the “10 (Plus One) Rules for Respect”

adapted slightly.

1. If you have a problem with me, come

to me (privately).

2. If I have a problem with you, I will

come to you (privately).

3. If someone has a problem with me and

comes to you, send them to me. (I will

do the same for you.)

4. If someone consistently will not come

to me, say, “Let’s go to Ann together. I

am sure she will see us about this. (I

will do the same for you.)

5. Be careful how you interpret me – I

would rather do that. On matters that

are unclear, do not feel pressured to

interpret my feelings or thoughts. It is

easy to misinterpret intentions. Assume

the best of me and ask if you have

questions about my intentions.

6. I will be careful how I interpret you. I

will assume the best of you and ask if I

have questions about your intentions.

7. If it is confidential, do not tell. If you or

anyone comes to me in confidence, I

will not tell unless a) the person is going

to harm himself/herself; b) the person is

going to physically harm someone else;

c) a child has been physically or sexually

abused. I expect the same from you. A

caveat on this: the confidentiality in

prayer and support groups is meant to

build up the Body of Christ by

strengthening one’s spiritual life. It is

not intended to provide cover for

breaking these rules of respectful

communication. It is not wise to assume

that speaking ill of someone, or

behaving destructively in a confidential

group, will somehow not get out. These

things have a way of doing so.

8. I do not read unsigned letters or notes.

9. I do not manipulate; I will not be

manipulated; do not let others

manipulate you. Do not let others try

to manipulate me through you. I will

not preach “at you.” I will leave

conviction to the Holy Spirit (the Holy

Spirit does it better anyway!)

10. When in doubt, just say it. The only

dumb questions are those that do not

get asked. Our relationships with one

another, at the end of the day, are the

most important things so if you have a

concern, pray, and then (if led) speak

up. If I can answer it without

misrepresenting something, someone,

or breaking a confidence, I will.

. . . and the 11th Rule

11. Pray for one another. That is not just a

throwaway line.

Lifting one another to God in prayer is how we

learn, slowly, and sometimes painfully, but

ultimately joyfully, to see each other with God’s

eyes, hear each other with God’s ears, and love

each other with God’ heart. My holding you in

prayer will always include me asking God to love

you through me. Pray that for me and for one

another.

The rector of the parish concluded his introduction

to the 10 Rules with these words. “I’m certain that

there will be times we adhere to these rules well,

and other times when we might overlook these

guidelines. I only ask that we engage these rules

with an intention to incorporate them into our lives

(both in and out of the parish). As we do, I trust

God will work through us and in us in our

relationships with one another and together we

will grow into the individuals, and the parish, God

hopes we will be.”

So may it be for us at Trinity.

Trinity Church Her People, Her Building Then and Now

Holy Week and Easter in the Baptism of Our Lord Window

Looking at the window where Jesus is baptized by his cousin John, the border details give ample opportunity for us to ponder scenes from this most holy week of the Christian year.

We see Jesus' struggle in the garden of Gethsemane to 'let this cup pass from me", meaning His suffering and death; the painful Crucifixion; and His victory over sin and death by His Resurrection.

May the words of the well-known hymns, "Petra" and "Neander", speak to us as we meditate on Christ's Passion, death, and Resurrection.

"Go to dark Gethsemane, ye that feel the tempter's power; your Redeemer's conflict see, watch with Him one bitter hour; turn not from His griefs away, learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

"Calvary's mournful mountain climb; there adoring at His feet, mark the miracle of time, God's own sacrifice complete; ‘It is finished!’ hear Him cry; learn of Jesus Christ to die." James Montgomery (1771-1854); The Hymnal 1982; Petra, # 171, vs 1, 3.

"He is risen, He is risen! Tell it out with joyful voice: He has burst His three-day prison; let the whole wide earth rejoice: death is conquered, we are free, and Christ has won the victory." Cecil Frances Alexander (1818 - 1895); The Hymnal 1982; Neander, # 180, v 1.

May His suffering, death and resurrection bless us to proclaim in word and deed that "Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again." Faithfully submitted by Trinity’s Historical Guild

A NOTE FROM MICHELLE…

I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to

everyone who donated money, gave a kind word or

said a little prayer for me during the time of my

house fire. I truly meant more to me than I can

even express! Someone came into the office one

day and said to me “If we cannot take care of our

own, then who can we take care of?” I love the

sense of family that I get working at Trinity and not

only do I call the prishoners my family but also my

friends. Again, thank you for your generosity and

your thoughts and prayers. I am truly blessed!

FOOD PANTRY DRIVE A

RESOUNDING SUCCESS!!

Jan Waldman, Trinity’s Food Pantry coordinator,

put out a call and the members of Trinity

responded with amazing generosity. That appeal

was not for Trinity’s Food Pantry because our

shelves are full thanks, again, to the generosity of

members and friends of the parish.

Rather Jan’s request was that we help the New

Hope Baptist Church Food Pantry that is located on

the west side. New Hope is a church with many

challenges that recognizes there are those in their

neighborhood with even more challenges than

theirs. And, they realize, those people need help.

When asked at a recent congregational meeting if

they wanted to disband their pantry. The vote was

a resounding NO!

But the shelves of New Hope’s pantry have been

pretty bare recently because of the overwhelming

need, and because New Hope’s pantry is one of the

few in Bay City that is open on Friday. So we went

shopping, and on Sunday, March 15 and Sunday,

March 22 food was collected for the New Hope

Baptist Church food pantry.

The photo that accompanies this article shows a

virtual mound of food – and that was just from

what we collected on Sunday, March 15. The

collection from Sunday, March 22 was equally

impressive.

Jan has already taken the food collected on March

15 to the New Hope Food Pantry. The folks at New

Hope were overwhelmed with gratitude, Jan said.

“Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least

of these who are members of my family, you did it

to me.”

A huge thank you to everyone who participated is

in this outreach project.
