Admission to TheTrinity Sixth Form

In order to be accepted onto a course at TheTrinity Sixth Form, you have to meet theadmissions criteria. The full details areenclosed in the back of the prospectus andany special requirements for particularcourses can be found on the subject bookletsavailable on the open nights and from any ofthe three partner schools.

Although most A-level courses will demandhigher than a C at GCSE, the basic entryrequirement remains at 5 A* –C grades in atleast 4 subjects, including English and Maths.This allows access to vocational courses andenables Trinity Sixth Form to have discretionin the admission appeals policy.

Any students who need to re-sit English orMaths will be taught and monitored at theirhome school.

Applied ScienceAPPLIED Science investigates how science is used within organisations. Students survey thelocal area to find out how science is applied in a variety of settings. In addition, students usescientific techniques to complete a variety of investigations. The third component of the courseis the externally examined unit, which addresses energy systems.

This subject goes well with Biology and would suit studentswho enjoy researching and working independently. It can leadto careers within organisations which use science.



STUDENTS studying Art will develop research, problem solving,

communication and writing skills. Theywill also extend their technical expertise,

self-confidence, independence, analytical thinking,aesthetic understanding, originality and individuality.

The course is best suited to students whocan work consistently to meet deadlines.Determination and the motivation to workindependently are essential, as is capacity tolisten to and act on advice.

BUSINESS Studies is a broadranging subject covering a numberof topics as diverse as law, financeand business ethics. It would suit

students who have an interest inbusiness and how it operates and who

want to study something relevant to theirown lives and experience. This subject will

appeal to students who have an interest in exercisingtheir rights and responsibilities and playing an active

role in the economy.

It goes well with Maths and Geography as we use data skills ina variety of forms to interpret results, and also with English and

Philosophy as we learn how to present arguments and makejudgements considering the evidence available. Business Studies

enables students to develop skills which will be of benefit in a widerange of careers, including: banking, retail management, insurance

underwriting, advertising.

THIS is an exciting and rewarding subject. Itinvolves the study of the structure and functionof living organisms, their relationships with oneanother and with their environment. It enablesstudents to develop a better understandingof the environment and organisms within it.

Biology also involves experimental work which helpsto develop manipulative skills, powers of analysis,ability to organise and present results and to reachconclusions. Biology develops research skills in topicssuch as biochemistry, microorganisms and ecosystems.

Chemistry is a highly valued academic qualification and maylead to a variety of careers including medicine, pharmacy,industrial chemistry, engineering, medicinal chemistry andscientific journalism. Successful chemistry students arehighly sought after and many work in public services,technical sales, finance and investment.


Classical CivilisationCLASSICAL Civilisation

is the study of the history,literature, art, drama,

mythology and philosophy ofAncient Greece and Rome. It is a

fascinating subject and one thatcaptivates those who study it. There

is no requirement to have previouslystudied classics; it can be enjoyed by all.

exploration. Students will direct, perform anddesign as well as reflecting upon theirexperiences. Students undertake both scriptedand devised work as well as exploring a widerange of practitioners, theatrical styles, texts andlive performers through theatre visits.Drama develops students in a

variety of ways socially, artistically andintellectually. They learn to work with others andon their own and acquire a real insight into thecraft of theatre. There is a huge diversity ofemployment opportunities in the theatreindustry beyond that of a performer, with postsin theatre management and design available allover the world. THE course is both physically demanding and artisticallychallenging. Students will develop further dance skills inperformance and choreography and will learn to analyse thework of professionals. They will gain a deeper understanding

of the professional application of dance and take part inperformances to demonstrate both their physical skills as

dancers and their ability to choreograph.

The course provides real insight into the demands of thesubject and is a useful grounding for progress on to

university or a career as a performer orchoreographer.

Maths & Further MathsMATHEMATICS helps candidates to developlogical thinking and problem-solving skills.The ability to manipulate numbers andinterpret graphs and statistics is required inmany other academic subjects and in theworkplace.

It is seen as a “facilitating subject” by the topuniversities as a good grade in mathematicsshows evidence of intellectual ability and thewillingness to accept a challenge. Puremathematics covers topics such as algebraand trigonometry, whichstudents are familiarwith from GCSE, aswell as some newones. It forms thecore element ofA-level.

Some talentedmathematicianscan choose to do

an extra A-level in FurtherMathematics. It takes the study ofmathematics to a higher level andcan be a useful subject for studentswho wish to study mathematics,physics or engineering atuniversities.

This subjectcombines well with other art courses as well as Media& Film Studies at A-level and can be studied further atmany Higher Education establishments. Photographyis an academic as well as a practical subject, whichdevelops skills that could lead to a wide variety ofcareer pathways.

PEPHYSICAL Education is a challenging yet enjoyable course thatcomprises both practical and theory elements. Students will require akeen interest in sport and a commitment to improving theirknowledge, understanding and skills. The subject combineseffectively with social and natural sciences, Leisure and Tourism,Health and Social Care and Business Studies.

The A-level syllabus is the perfect foundation forstudents who wish to pursue careersin: coaching, event andfacility management,physiotherapy,professional sport,recreational management, sportsjournalism, sports marketing,sport psychology,teaching, governmentand sport, the healthand fitness industry, theleisure industry andmany more.

Grade B pass at ScienceGCSE and two sportsplayed to a high standard,to have at least played fora school team is desirable.

SINCE September2014 the Trinity has

offered a new excitingA-level in Government and

Politics.

A-Level Government and Politicsallows students to develop a

deeper understanding of the worldwe live in. Students will learn that the

subject has a vast reach way beyondthe common perception of

people simply arguing ontelevision or parliament.Topics as diverse as, forexample, voterbehaviour andparticipation, the roleof protest and the

impact of new digital technologies are taughtalongside in-depth studies of ideas andideologies or comparative political systems.Politics is a course that is constantly refinedand updated to take into accountdevelopments in the real world as they occur.Students will develop not only a goodunderstanding of the course content but willdevelop knowledge that will support them in awhole host of other subject areas. Obviouscrossover exists in subjects such as: History,Geography, English, Sociology and others

besides. Two units are taught in Year 12and another two in Year 13. All units are

examined at the end of the year.

Students are expected to keep up-to-date with current events and bringthis knowledge to class.

PHYSICS is an amazing subject which ranges from the very smallest particle to thevery largest – from quarks to the whole universe. It is the study of mass andenergy and how they interact with each other.

Physics is a science which has many everyday applications, including themechanisms used in lifts, medical treatments used in hospitals and thedevelopment of sustainable energy sources for society.

Physics is a well regarded subject at A-level which universities valuehighly. It combines well with the other sciences, Maths, ICT andDesign Technology.

The potential careers available are wide ranging, fromastronomer to medical physicist, engineer, optician,radiographer, nuclear physicist and rocket scientist.

THE course introduces students to the main approaches inpsychology. It develops their understanding of the brain

and explanations for human and animal behaviour, aswell as developing knowledge of how science works

through experimental and investigative activities.

This subject suits students with an enquiringmind who enjoy debating and exploring

various explanations. Psychology requireselements of Maths, Science and English;

therefore students need to becompetent in all of these areas at

GCSE level.

STUDENTS who choose performingarts explore themes in order to creatework and perform in their chosendiscipline – acting; dance; music or acombination of the above.

All students participate in MusicalTheatre work as well as a mixture ofdevised pieces, taught texts/repertoireand techniques. Students will alsohave the opportunity to learn abouttechnical aspects of theatre. Studentsare expected to perform in scheduled

Dear Students and Parents,Here is a guide that I hope you will find useful.

The present government want to push forward with a reform ofA levels suggested by the previous coalition government. Theintention is to raise standards and part of this is the removal ofthe opportunity for students to re-sit courses or modules beforetheir final results. There will be a substantial reduction incoursework with some subjects having none at all.

In addition, A-levels will be a two year course withexaminations at the end of that two year course. This isintended to reward the rigour of ongoing learning and theability to perform under pressure with terminal examinationsin the final summer term of the students’ studying. There isnow clear guidance about students wishing to complete athird year of study which used to be possible but will be moredifficult to consider in the future, unless exceptionalcircumstances can be cited, e.g. serious health issues.The A-levels are intended to be harder to pass and certainlymore challenging, this is why our entry requirements in thelast three years have risen to ensure that students will be ableto cope with the increased demands in A-level study. Whileour base line remains at 5 A* - Cs for this year, it is likely tochange over the next few years. Certainly a student with onlyCs will be guided into certain practical subjects –BTECs andsome A-levels which depend on student’s passion for thesubject. This will be kept under review as the changed A-levels come on-line.

The government intention is to separate AS qualificationsfrom A level qualifications. It is no longer essential forstudents to study AS levels. The results in AS will no longeraffect the results in A levels and there is good reason forstudents to avoid taking on AS levels alongside A levels.

There will be a three year introduction of the new courseswith Phase 1 starting in September 2015 and Phase 2 (whichwill affect the readers of this prospectus) starting in September2016. During this time any subjects not yet reformed will betaught under the rules of the A level courses from the lastdecade and more. These will be referred to as legacyqualifications. See the lists opposite.
