Pastoral Thought

While at a church conference in Springfield, IL I had the opportunity to visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. I was educated anew upon the secession of states from the union that led to our Civil War. In the church there are also spiritual Cessationist. There are those with Christendom (the worldwide body of Christians) who would say that spiritual gifts such as prophecy and healing ceased with the apostolic age.

This is generally opposed to Continuationism, which teaches that the Holy Spirit may bestow the spiritual gifts on persons other than the original twelve apostles at any time. Cessationists believe that when the Old Testament canon closed at Malachi, for the next 400 years until John the Baptist, the gifts had ceased. Similarly, when the New Testament canon closed the gifts ceased, healing and tongues and prophesy ceased after the cannon or the death of the apostles.

Paul teaches, “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophe-cy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the inter-pretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. (1 Cor. 12:7-11)

The only expiration date listed is in 1 Cor. 13, as upon Christ returns. I believe scripture teaches that every believer has the Holy Spirit imparted to them through Baptism and the Holy Spirit to receive the gifting of the Holy Spirit. All gifts from God – so Paul later warns us not to build ourselves up.

The gifts are given to build up the body of Christ. (I Cor. 12:27-30). Gifts give us the means for ministry and flow out of Love. Love opens the door for ministry. Therefore, the most strived for gift should be love! According to Wesley, sanctifica-tion is perfection in love. Don’t be envois, rude, or arrogant. The most important thing is the love of Christ in all things. Dr. David Watson says, “A Methodist is one seeking sanctification in unity with other Christians.”

How do you know your gifts? You know them in community because people affirm them there. However, I know that we talk so seldom about Spiritual Gifts in our normal day to day life as a church that perhaps you have never identified your gifting. Thus, I recommend starting with a Spiritual Gifts assessment. There are several excellent websites that you can choose from online. A simple version can be found at www.umc.org/what-we-believe/spiritual-gifts A more detailed as-sessment can be found at www.umcdiscipleship.org/new-church-starts/spiritual-gifts

Please take a minute to discover your Spiritual Gifts. Share them with your church family and pastors. Most of all share them through service in our Trinity church family. Everything good happens in Christian community. The exercise of the gifts in concert with others is where it is most beautiful.

LADIES TEA On September 7 there will be a tea for ladies of Trinity, 18 years and over from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Please bring a guest. Regis-tration sheets will be in the fellow-ship area or let Jane Wynne know. We are looking for ladies who would like to decorate a table with lovely teacups and saucers and center piece. If you know some-one looking for a church, this would be a great opportunity to introduce them to Trinity.

Thank You for a great Art Camp/VBS 2019. Our first Art Camp took place over four night. For three

nights the children ate dinner, had a puppet show, created art, enjoyed Bible study, music and play. On Thursday night the grand finale with a huge slip-and-slide inflatable was cut short because of thunder and lightening in the area. However, the art show and fellow-ship meal went wonderfully. We celebrate the 30 children who a ended and thank the 22 adult volunteers who made this all possible. In par cular, we thank Susan Burton for hear-ing God’s call to have a summer “VBS” and pulling our church family together to make it all happen.
