SUNDAY SERVICES 8 A.M. AND 10 A.M.

EVENSONG WEDNESDAYS AT 5:30 P .M.

HEALING SERVICE: THURSDAYS AT 10 A.M.

Holy Trinity is called to be a witness

of God’s love to the people of our community and to the world through our open minds, and our open hearts. All baptized persons are welcome

to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. We are a community

on a spiritual journey, seeking to grow in faith and service through

our worship, education and outreach programs.

FROM THE RECTOR . . . Dear Friends,

From the very beginning of the church, the body of Christ, Christ turned it over to the disciples. He spoke to the one named Simon Peter and said upon this rock I will build my church. The name Petre means “rock”. If you have read and studied the Gospels to any extent you were probably quick to con-clude that Christ had to know this was far from the perfect solution. Neverthe-less Jesus believed in them and he poured a mold for greatness and they filled it.

As we journey though Lent hopefully part of the process will cause you to ask what you are being called to contribute here at Holy Trinity. The disciples are the perfect example of what people can do when someone believes in them. In the past four years I have on countless occasions seen ordinary people step forward and do extraordinary things in a vast array of ministries.

You are here for a reason and if Jesus believes in you, as he doggedly did believe in his disciples, then there is no limit to what we can do or the lives we can touch. The work of ministry is not about huge numbers, it is about saving one soul at a time. When we break it down into pieces then the task is not too daunting for anyone and everyone becomes the rock through which souls are brought to Christ. Believe in yourself for Christ certainly does.

Blessings,

Fr. David

STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE The Strategic Planning Committee would like to thank everyone from Holy Trinity Church who has participated in this exciting process of developing a strategic plan for our church. We had great participation during the two weeks that we solicited your thoughts after the two Sunday services. Everyone was quite engaged in the process and presented many great ideas. Consultant Cheryl Houghtelin did a great job working with a large group representing all areas of our par-ish life to help us begin to develop specific goals and objectives. Once a draft plan is developed we will have an op-portunity for parish members to review it and share their thoughts in additional meetings after the two services on a Sunday. This is a work in process and we hope to be sharing the strategic plan some time around Easter. We are pleased that so many have participated in this process and trust that going forward with our dynamic strategic plan will help us fulfill the mission of Holy Trinity Church.

Make your plans to join us for our 18th annual Vacation Bible School. Get ready for exciting wilderness thrills as you head out to beautiful Son Rise National Park. Children in Kindergarten though 6th grade will explore and learn the most important survival skills of all: they can always depend on Jesus and his promises of true peace, true riches, true power, true love and true hope. Let’s take our children and our neighbors and community to Son Rise National Park where all trails lead to Jesus! Please take some time this month to pray for the children who will be attending VBS and also take some time to pray about what YOU can do for Holy Trinity during this exciting week. Can you teach, act in our skits, prepare food, create arts and crafts, sing, paint our set or decorate? All of you have spiritual gifts that we hope you will share. Next month I will be asking you to commit to an area. Please hear the call and join us. Feel free to call me with any questions you may have! Elizabeth Brown, Director of Christian Education

A Public Gospel This year, Ash Wednesday found itself in the news. That's because several churches engaged in something known as “Ashes on the Go,” distributing ashes and prayers on street corners, at public transit depots, in front of bars and coffee shops. The reaction has been interesting. A few of my clergy friends engaged in this and had quite interesting responses. One of them had about 55 people stop by for ashes and wound up seeking confession or other prayers. But this practice has brought up an important conversation in the Episcopal Church regarding the “dreaded E-word”--evangelism. Evangelism was the basis for Ashes on the Go and it seems to have been successful. People encountered God and maybe saw spiri-tual changes in their lives. But the use of Ash Wednesday, a day of Christian devotion and penitence that focuses on mortality, is a strange day for this. It's strange that this is something that resonates with our world, this being told that “you are dust and to dust you shall return.” Evangelism is a good thing to think about during Lent. After all, we are on a pilgrimage to the cross of Good Friday and the Tomb of Easter, where God did the work of saving the world. Because of this, we should want to bring as many people with us on this journey and to this destination. We should want the world to experience the salvation offered by Jesus Christ. Like some of you, I've been raised with a particular understanding of evangelism. For me, it meant going door-to-door in my neighborhood on Wednesday afternoons and asking people if they knew whether or not they were going to heaven when they died. This usually involved a lot of doors being shut and/or tracts being left. At its root, this is what evangelism is all about. We are to declare to the world that Jesus saves us from sin and offers us a new life in His Kingdom. But evangelism need not require the employment of lofty rhetoric and persuasion. Indeed, this is even what Saint Paul says in I Corinthians 2:1. Evangelism is declaring the simple truth that God loves the world and that a better world has been made possible. It is offering the community of the Church as a body of people to love and serve each other so that no one is without. Maybe giving out ashes on street corners declares that truth. Maybe handing out tracts does too. The fact remains that Jesus has called us to be disciples that declare the gospel. Jesus has called us to be evangelists. And that call-ing can be lived out in myriad ways. We just have to live it. We can take the church to the world. How is God calling us to evangelize the world?

The American Eagle is an endangered species. The government and various wildlife groups are

working diligently to preserve this noble national bird. We can all identify with the American Eagle, for we feel a similar threat! If you look closely between the lines of the Gospels, you will see that each of us is an endangered species.

“Unless you deny yourself”, Jesus says, “You cannot be my disciple”. Your very self, in psychology, is called your ego. As an ego, we are in danger each time we read the Gospels, each time we go to commun-ion or pray. We know at these moments our little ego is endangered. And now more than ever, the Ameri-can Ego is in grave danger.

The American Ego, not to be confused with the American Eagle, is that image of self as a nation that is described as the biggest, best, richest, most powerful, strongest and most influential country in the world. We feel the right to use up most of the world’s resources at the expense of underdeveloped countries simply because we are Number One. The American Ego must die if we are to become a truly Christian na-tion that shares its wealth with the world, without any strings attached. That ego must become extinct to allow others to live a decent lifestyle.

The American Ego is often a reflection of our own egos, as we seek to be right in every argument, to be the best regardless of what such a position might require of others. Our own ego seeks constantly to as-sert itself at the expense of others. Remember the slogan “let’s take care of Old Number One”. We can ex-ercise care to protect our egos from danger or harm, but if we do, we may miss the Kingdom.

Jesus calls us to lose all egos and all the “little selves” we guard so well, because only then will we find our true self, our real self. It is this true self who God created us to be; loving, caring, forgiving, and non-judgmental, living in harmony with God, creation, and the rest of the world.

While we should do all in our power to save the American Eagle, we need to do all in our power to make our own egos extinct and become true disciples of Jesus.
