  • after the construction of the Enchey Monastery in the latter part of the 19th century.

History of GangtokIt was an important trade centre between the British and Tibet during the 19th century. Gangtok was made the capital ofSikkim in 1894 by Thutob Namgyal, who was a monarch under the British Rule. When India gained independence in1947, Sikkim chose to be an independent monarchy and Gangtok continued to be its capital.

However, in 1975, after a period of strife and struggle, Sikkim was finally made an Indian state and Gangtok was madeits official capital. The city suffered a major setback in its trade relations with Tibet after the Nathu La Pass was closedfollowing the Sino-Indian war of 1962. However, the Pass has been opened in 2006, and Gangtok has again startedfunctioning as a major trade point between India and Tibet.

People & Culture of GangtokThe town has people from different ethnicities. The presence of Buddhists, Chinese, Tibetans as well as Hindus givesGangtok a colourful ambience and every festival is celebrated here with the same fervour. Some of the popularlycelebrated festivals are Losum and Losar, among others.

Most of the economy of Gangtok depends on tourism. A large part of the population of the town is employed in thetourism sector. Of late, eco-tourism has picked up in the region with tourists being offered the opportunity of trekking, rafting as well as mountaineering. Apart from the tourism industry, cottage industries form the other major portion ofGangtoks economy which deals in watch making, handicrafts and local alcohol processing.

Some of the major attractions in and around Gangtok are theRumtek Monastery, Pemayangtse Monastery, Tashiding Monastery, Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La Pass, HanumanTok etc. Visitors who want to explore Gangtok and its surroundings but do not want to do the planning themselves canopt for the several Gangtok holiday packages available.

Food & Shopping in GangtokSikkimese food is a mix of Nepalese, Tibetan and Indian cuisine with rice being the staple. Some of the local delicaciesof Gangtok are ningro (fern rings), shisnu (nettle soup), phing (glass noodles) and churpi (yak cheese) cooked with a lotof chillies. Apart from these, momos are available round the corner. There are a lot of restaurants, eateries and fast-food joints in Gangtok.

Gangtok is full of souvenir and curio shops. One of the best areas for shopping is the road near Lal Bazar which notonly has many shops but prices are also cheaper by 30-40% than the shops on M.G. Road. The Sikkim Handloom andHandicraft Emporium sells masks, wall hangings, carpets, leather goods and Tibetan, Bhutia and Lepcha dresses.Other items that are popularly bought include thankas, silk paintings, prayer wheels, Tibetan jewellery etc.

The easiest way to reach Gangtok is byshared jeep from Siliguri, in West Bengal, which takes around 4 - 5 hours. BagdograAirport is connected to Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi with Kolkata and Delhi airports having international connections aswell. Taxis are available from the airport to reach Gangtok. These cost around INR2000.

There is a helicopter service also which is run by the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation from Bagdogra toGangtok, once a day. The cost for this is approximately INR2200 but baggage allowance is limited to 10 kg.

Featured review about GangtokPerfect Holiday Destination"Gangtok was something that had been on our radar for quite some time and finally we decided to take the plunge whenkids had vacations for 10 days in March and we were not really keen on spending those days at home. Instantly decidedon Gangtok and then clubbed it with Pelling and Darjeeling. We still reliving those fond memories of one week ofheaven.

How to reach: Gangtok is not directly connected by rail or air with nearest airport at Bagdogra and nearest railhead atNew Jalpaiguri (both in West Bengal). A gruelling four hour drive is involved in reaching Gangtok from either location. However, prepaid taxis are easily available at both the airport and railway station.

Ideal time to visit Gangtok would be Apr-Jun and then again from Sep-Nov. After that it gets really cold. Our trip was inthe last week of March and was relatively comfortable. The cold was not too biting except when we visited Nathula Pass.

Gangtok offers a multitude of attractions with the obvious view points as well as numerous monasteries. Hire a local taxioperator who would be able to guide you around. They are quite reasonable and do not actually fleece (unless you endup with the bad sheep of course). People are extremely friendly and warm hearted. Another prominent speciality of

    Page 3/13

  • entire Sikkim was that all places were spanking clean at all times. People took pride in keeping it clean, a welcomechange from many other locations across India.

Food available at most places was Momos, Maggi and Wai Wai (another variety of instant noodles). In the cold weather, hot momos or Maggi did seem god send at more occasions than one. Ensure you carry at least a warm jacket orsweater at all times. It did rain once during our stay and we were forced to buy an umbrella but I think it was a freakincident as confirmed from our driver cum guide too.

With plenty to see and lots of stuff to buy, it is indeed a holiday paradise and one that is worth experiencing. Do not missout on visiting Nathula pass and seeing eye to eye with the Chinese soldier on guard at the border. However, a pass isneeded and that can be obtained only one day in advance, so that is to be borne in mind while planning the trip. Alsonot to miss is the various Buddhist monasteries, each one more beautiful than the previous. Chinese dragon has atremendous influence throughout and is omnipresent throughout Gangtok. Dont miss a stroll in the Mall Road(completely free of vehicles) and enjoy shopping for trinkets at a leisurely pace.

A few of the attractions in and around Gangtok are Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, Cable car, RumtekMonastery, Hanuman Tok, Ganesh Tok, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and Tashi View Point.

Ideal period of stay would be between 3-4 days. Anything less would make you miss something, anything more wouldbe just in case you are in mood to relax and enjoy the weather!" - Rahul Sidharthan, Cochin, 3 months ago

An adveturous trip to a wonderful place"It was a last minute planned trip and this was the first time we were going anywhere in the North-east. Besides, rainswere about to hit the region and we had heard of the torrential rains in this region. Apprehensions about the trip were, therefore, quite high. But Gangtok turned out to be a surprise.

We have been to most hill stations of North India but Gangtok was different. Clean streets, disciplined traffic, uniquevegetation, beautiful flowers, huge mountains, gurgling streams, roaring rivers, floating clouds and mist was all thatcould make your heart jump with joy.

We had an encounter with the beauty of the place when we started our journey from the Bagdogra Airport towardsGangtok in a taxi. Apart from this, a helicopter ride is the only other way to get to Gangtok. We planned the trip at thelast minute, otherwise we could have booked a helicopter ride too. But then the road journey is also something youcannot afford to miss.

It was raining, but more like a drizzle than the torrential rains which we expected. The rains added to the surreal beautyof the place. We were riding through the clouds as it was misty all around. An atmosphere of sheer charm.

The first place we visited was Banjhakri. A small place well-organised around a waterfall and streams. It is a place worthspending some time. Next, we went for the Gondola ride. Although we managed to just peer through the breaks in thefloating clouds from time to time at the beautiful Gangtok below, it was a fantastic experience.

The next point we visited was the Tashi View Point situated at the highest point in Gangtok. The view of the mountainsfrom there was exquisite, although we could not see the Kanchenjunga because of the clouds.

The next day we set out for Lachung which is situated at a height of around 15000 feet. It was drizzling all the way. Theride was rough, highly adventurous and at some point even dangerous. But a wonderful experience as we rode alonghuge and menacing mountains with roads completely damaged due to landslides and crossed several huge waterfallswith water rushing down ferociously. The Teesta river flowed along with roaring waters. Although, it is dangerous duringthe rains but you would miss several waterfalls if you come here during the dry seasons. But do not insist to go beyonda point if you get news of landslides or you might get stuck for long period of time. We also decided to turn back oncewe got such news. We had a wonderful ride so far and going beyond could be dangerous.

The next day we tried to book a helicopter ride but we were told the rides were closed due to maintenance for two days.It is something one must try out.

    Page 4/13

  • The mall in Gangtok is a truly nice place to hang out. We had exotic food at Baker's Cafe and some finger-licking non-vegetarian stuff at Khan Chacha's Biryani. The food at Parivar Restaurant was also good. We shopped for umbrellasand tea.

It was a wonderful and a memorable trip." - Hasan jawaid Khan, Delhi, Jul 8, 2014

Escape from the daily hustle and bustle."Relaxed, Susegad Experience. Although this was not my first visit to Gangtok, but yes this was my trip. I was free toplan, to choose, to spend and finally I could experience a whole new Gangtok this time. November, being one of thebest times to visit Sikkim, the Majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga was visible not only through out the day, but the view ofKanchenjunga on a full moon night sitting in my hotel room and sipping my hot coffee was more than just anexperience.Since I have already visited Sikkim numerous times, this time I decided to explore Gangtok. And I was quite amazedwith the variety of local handicraft items. Although most of them were hand made, yet they were so elegant. One mustreally visit the local market and have a look at the wide variety of the local handicrafts.Gangtok provides great restaurants and bars for Guests. I would suggest all to visit in "Bakers World" in MG road andtry their Blackberry Muffins. For people who wants to relish Pork Momos, or Pork Chilly, Hotel Kytsel opposite the IDBIback would be the best place to be. They serve the best Pork dishes in Gangtok. For veggies, Amarjeet hotel is a goodoption or Rasoi. People are warm and friendly. And yes don't forget the Rope-way ride. Its simply amazing.

If you want to go for sightseeing and Changu, Babamandir, Nathula the best possible thing would be to contact the hotelfront desk. They will provide you the best options. Dont forget to carry 3-4 photos and valid Id proof when u visit Sikkim.

The best possible way to enjoy Gangtok would be take a camera in your hand and simply keep walking where the roadstake you. You get chances to explore, to meet new people to know new things and yes also some authentic Sikkimesedishes.

During my trip I learnt a few things about Sikkim that I would like to share with my friends :1. Sikkim is not that costly unless you are looking for a luxurious tour, except for a few places where shared vehicles arenot available. Reaching Gangtok from Siliguri is not very tough. Shared will take around 200 to 250 per head. Andreserved vehicles will charge around 2000-2500 depending on availability. 2. Its a myth that cheap rooms are not available on MG Road. No, you get decent rooms right in the MG Road, but yesyou need to know to bargain.3. Always prefer view rooms. Nothing is much better than watching the snow capped Kanchenjunga, sipping youmorning tea in your blanket.4. Beware of local travel agents. Its advisable to have a little idea about the sightseeing points. Local guide books arereadily available.5. Try Chang(local brewed drink) if you get a chance.6. Come equipped with heavy woolen clothes and jackets if you intend to visit Lachung, Gurudongma, Yumthang,Changu, Nathula.7. Don't over eat before any journey in the hills. Unless you are not a vivid traveler.8. If you are an adventure lover, Paragliding is available in Gangtok.9. Try to stay near MG Marg, if rooms are above ur budget then preferably in Tibet Road, or near Police Headquarters.Avoid Hotels in Development Area.Lastly, try the variety of pickles which are available in the market.." - Suman Ghosh, Siliguri, Nov 21, 2013

Enchanting Sikkim"Sikkim is a very neat and beautiful state. We have been to Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, Lachung and Yumthang. I havebeen to many places, but the experience we experienced in Sikkim is unforgetable. The snow capped mountains andthe snow flakes falling was all totally a new scene for all of us at Tsomgo Lake. The valley of Lachung was serene andtranquil. Yumthang, the Valley of Flowers was all covered with snow which we have never experienced earlier. Everyseason has a beauty of its own at Sikkim.

Hotel Sai Kripa is a very good, neat and clean hotel. The people showed a very warm welcome. Though very few staff
