―NEVER FRY BACON NAKED‖- UNKNOWN
Well, with Labor Day just a memory, it‘s time to pre-
pare for the change. Not necessarily the weather, or
the riding conditions but the wardrobe change. It‘s
time to put the plaid seersucker shorts, the white pat-
ent leather belt and shoes away until next year.
I‘d say it‘s time to start thinking about the District
Rally in Carlsbad, but if you haven‘t already been
thinking about it, what have you been doing? The
Rally is going to be a good, no, GREAT time. There
will be all sorts of exciting things for you to participate
in. Lisa and I are looking forward to it, I hope you are
too. We can‘t wait to see you all there.
Remember the good old days when you could go to
a concert for $8, well as with everything, the times
they are a changing. Remember when the band
played their epic ballad and everyone pulled out their
lighters. Well we went to a concert the other night
and when they played their epic ballad everyone
pulled out their smart phones and turned on the
flashlights. While it was quite a sight to see, I did feel
slightly left out of the craze as I pulled out the lone
Zippo. Now don‘t worry, I won‘t be running out to get
a smart phone for the next show, sometimes it‘s
good to be OLD SCHOOL.
I know you remember OLD SCHOOL. 3 on the tree,
drive in movies, drinking from the hose, push mowers
(without motors), and 8 track tapes. In the hustle and
bustle of life, doesn‘t it feel good to be unplugged
sometimes?
On September 11th take some time and unplug and
remember those we lost. Thank a service member or
a first responder for their service.
NEVER FORGET.

Musings of your ACD
As I was traveling to Clovis, NM for the other kind of motorcycle rally; I was thinking about the rally I am attending and the rally I am going to attend on the 25, 26 and 27 of this month. They are driven in two different directions. The rally here is about seeing old friends, doing some riding, and of course eating, it wouldn‘t be a rally without eating.
Now our district rally has all of that but we also have lots of educational opportunities for better riding, your life in general, and first aid. Now I‘m not saying that ours is better, its purpose is just different. They both have their places in the world of motorcycling.

LOOK What‘s NEW at the District Convention!
I am excited to tell you about three new events to be held at this years‘ New Mexico District Conven-tion in Carlsbad.
The first one is: Thrifty Styles. This style
show will be held on Friday, September 26 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be individuals from various Chapters in the District modeling breathtak-ing outfits that they purchased at thrifty prices. Everyone enjoys going for a great ride, but the la-dies, as well as the men, want to look their best when they are not riding. So make sure you attend to find out what these models are wearing and for tips on how and what to look for in clothing when you are shopping. You don‘t want to miss this event.
The second one is: Scrapbooking. This class
will be held on Saturday, September 27 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. This class is open to both men and women. Maybe you are already into scrapbooking, maybe you‘re a novice, or maybe you have always wanted to learn how to scrap book but have not taken the time to get started. Well, now is the per-fect time to take a cut into scrapbooking. All sup-plies will be provided. You just have to bring your own pictures, learn how to organize your pictures, how to be creative in placing your pictures in al-bums, and what unlimited options are available when you start scrapbooking. Let your imaginative and creative side come out. You should be able to complete at least one if not two pages for a scrap book. If you are already a scrap booker, just bring
your scrapbooking materials along and work on your latest album. This is a great way to memorial-ize and start a Chapter scrapbook, family vacation album, chapter ride, etc. Come, relax and enjoy some great craft time.
The third one is:Cell Phone Q & A. This class will
be held on Saturday, September 27 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. This class will focus on technical and usage questions only. Billing questions will not be answered. Every wonder how to refresh your cell phone to the cell phone towers? Do you have app questions? Some basic technical instructions will be provided for cell phones as well as more spe-cific questions on usage. Make sure you bring your cell phone to this class and your technical questions.

So what have you been thinking about this winter? Have you been thinking about the gray skies, the rain, sleet or snow of the season? And how about the freezing tem-peratures? These are not very cheerful thoughts for those of us who are not winter sports enthusiasts. Some riders brighten their outlook at this time of year by plan-ning for the coming riding season. A few of us are decid-ing which motorcycling events to attend this spring and summer. Will it be the Americade rally in upstate New York? Maybe this year you are planning to attend Wing Ding? How about a vacation trip to an area with great roads to ride or interesting geological attractions to see? Whatever your destination, planning the route to take is an important part of trip planning. However, don‘t over-look the need to plan the gear you will need to take with you on each of your trips. Having the proper gear for the ride is an essential element of a successful trip.
So why not start with your most important safety gear? Inspect your helmet for wear and tear. How long has it been since you bought your helmet? Does the outer shell have chips or cracks? Has it sustained an impact while you were wearing it? Has it been repeatedly dropped from your motorcycle seat? Realize that helmets are only designed to survive one impact while being worn. Also look at the chin strap. Is it frayed from many years of wear? These signs of damage indicate that it may be time to replace your helmet. Experts advise changing your helmet every 3 to 5 years for maximum protection. Time, wear and ultraviolet rays will cause your helmet‘s materials to degrade resulting in reduced protection. (www.snellfoundation.org.)
Are you planning a southern tour this summer? Have you thought to check the weather for the area you plan to visit? Be sure you know what the average high and low temperatures are for the month of your visit. If you expect to encounter hot weather, this may be the time for you to start shopping for a mesh jacket if you don‘t already own one. These jackets give you the best abrasion protection (if needed) along with maximum ventilation. Good venti-lation reduces your discomfort in hot weather and can help prevent heat exhaustion. Even though they have long sleeves, when you wear a mesh jacket the air flows around you almost as if you are wearing nothing. And the synthetic materials provide excellent abrasion resistance.
With elbow, shoulder and back pads included, you get great protection for your ‗corners‘ and your back in case you go down.
Wise riders always wear long pants while riding. Most riders wear denim jeans. This is probably because they are already part of everyone‘s wardrobe to begin with, and they are comfortable when you are not on the bike. They do provide some resistance to abrasion, but not anywhere near the protection of leather or the synthetic gear. Did you know there are also riding pants made from breathable mesh materials, too? They bring all the benefits of being designed specifically for motorcycling with extra protection at the knees, hips, and legs in case of a spill at speed. The mesh material can also help keep you from getting uncomfortably hot. And there are gloves manufactured with the same mesh materials to protect your hands as well. They provide you with a good grip on the controls while keeping your hands fully covered for maximum protection. They are durable and worth check-ing out for your comfort and protection.
Can you rely on your current rain gear? Does your rain gear have leaky seams or rips? Do you need to put a new jacket or rain pants on the shopping list? Having good, comfortable gear that fits you properly for all riding conditions will allow you to fix your attention on the ride and not on your physical discomforts. This will also help ensure that you will have a great trip. And knowing that you and your co-rider have the protection you may need will give you peace of mind every time you saddle up. Now, which route do we want to take?

Monthly Social September 11,2014
August Social at the Albuquerque BioPark
On August 14th we met at the Biopark for a
night of music and friendship. Lisa arrived early
and staked out our preferred location by
spreading chairs and blankets around. In atten-
dance were, Joe and Peg Pool, Dave and Lisa,
Richard and Christy, Mike and Vicky Dalby,
Cindi, and Tracey Mummey (Richard‘s sister)
and her friend Robbye.
We glad handed and hugged all around, took a
walk through the gardens and enjoyed a picnic
supper, all while enjoying the music. The night
was beautiful, the music cool and the friend-
ship welcome.
As the sun went down and the night cooled off,
the bats came out. Could this be a harbinger of
things to come in Carlsbad? The Biopark is a
not so hidden treasure in the city. The place
was packed with people practically sitting on
one another, children running around and one
couple throwing glow sticks into the crowd for
the children of all ages.
Lisa and I have been going almost every
Thursday in the summers for over 10 years. It‘s
a nice escape in an oasis in the desert. If you
missed it, you missed a great time.

Colorado Rally Aug. 25-27 Dave and Lisa Bachman
Lisa and I along with Richard and Christy met up
early on Thursday morning to trek up to Breckenridge
for the Colorado Rally. A few left earlier and some ar-
rived later that evening. We made good time and
stopped in Alamosa for gas and breakfast, unfortu-
nately the restaurant I planned on eating at was being
remodeled so we had an early lunch instead.
We arrived and checked in to our respective abodes.
Lisa and I were up the hill at our condo about 300
yards away, more about that later. After checking in
we walked down to the Rally Host Hotel. On our way
we decided to take a short cut through the property
below us. After climbing back up the hill when we real-
ized we were trapped, we walked down the street and
hit the main drag. We walked about a mile and a half.
We found if we turned right instead of left we could be
there in about 3/10ths of a mile. Now we know. Well
as the weekend progressed and we did a good
amount of walking, one of the staff showed us a short
cut through our property turning our trek into about
300 yards.
We went into town several times and watched the bi-
cycle race, and found some cool places to eat. One
little Cajun joint had Oyster Poor Boys, yummy!
At opening ceremonies, where they drew the pre-
registration 50/50, wouldn‘t you know it, Richard wins
one of the drawings. Not nearly done, Richard wins
another 50/50 at closing ceremonies. Refreshments
on Richard!
The Rally theme was from ―Back to the Future‖ and
the gang was all there, Doc, Marty, Biff, and not the
least Loraine. There were themed contests, light
shows, bike shows and even a magician.
The weather at night brought the temperature down to
a balmy 40 degrees, and it was beautiful in the morn-
ing sitting on the balcony having coffee. One morning I
spotted a fox walking through the property hunting. He
caught some sort of rodent, but alas dropped it. The
ensuing 20 minutes of chase around one of the shuttle
tires was fun to watch. People walked within 5 feet of
him and it didn‘t seem to faze him. He finally gave up
and wandered off.
We left with original group and added Harry and Amy
for the ride home. We stopped in Salida for breakfast
and then mounted back up for the trek home. The
weather was good, the Rally was fun and the friend-
ship wonderful. What a beautiful spot for a Rally. You
should have been there.

Annual Chapter W picnic August 17,2014
The Annual Chapter W picnic was held at Oak Flats
in the Manzano mountains. There was some great food!
Dave made BBQ chicken and baked beans, Chris made
brisket, and there was potato salad, corn on the cob, and
several members brought desserts.
Games, there was the frozen T-shirt, Jenga, toilet
plunger and ring, and the great whip cream and cheetos
game. Having a ‗hot‘ head makes the whip cream melt!!!
Everyone had a great time except for Russ Hall who
thought he might have to stay there. His motorcycle had
a dead battery, and he had to turn to the dark side for
help and assistance. Dave and his trusty Dodge! (One
Chapter director helping another one)!
It was nice visiting with all three Chapters, and a
good time was had by all. It was a great success!

decided to sit down.

ing battery cable to

On August 21st, Christy and I met up with Dave
and Lisa Bachman to ride to the Colorado District
rally held in Breckenridge, CO. Our route was up
on US285 to Alamosa for fuel and eats, on CO17
to US24 before Buena Vista, then to CO9 at Fair-
play. There we brought out the rain gear as it was
getting overcast and Hoosier Pass is at 11,539
feet...and cold.
Once we were in Breckenridge, we found our
rooms while Dave and Lisa's had an adventurous
walk (Dave will explain). Then we met at the reg-
istration desk, toured the convention and waited
for the opening ceremonies. Dinner was provided
by the rally. I was a 50/50 winner, great way to
begin! The theme of the rally-Back to the Future.
Friday, we walked to town for breakfast and to
check out the village. There was a bicycle race
going on -Tour of Colorado, and Breckenridge
was one of the stages. They blocked all the roads
in town, so we stood at the barricades and
watched the riders whizzing by very fast at 35-
45mph, some in large groups. Then we had fun
trying on some crazy hats.
When we got back to our room, it was time for
the banquet and entertainment. The meal was
good. Christy and I sat at a table with a group
from Mexico. Talking with them (Hablo muy poco
espanol!), they were three brothers, their
spouses, and two friends, traveling the United
States on their Goldwing trikes. A magician was
the evening entertainment and he was a great
act!
Saturday was the closing ceremony and I was
another 50/50 winner, except some did not like
my Harley rain jacket that I had on as it was cold
in the tent...oh well....Winner winner!
Riding back, Harry and Amy joined our group.
Eateries that we tried in Breckenridge:
The Blue Moose—breakfast was very good,
strong coffee.
The Lost Cajun--po' boy sandwiches. Cajun
food at 9,700 feet!!!
Columbine Cafe--pancakes the size of a pizza
--12", weak coffee but good food.
Breckenridge Brewery--great food and re-
freshment!
The rally was well planned with seminars, a ven-
dor room, a motorcycle simulator, bike and light
show and a couple of chapter events.
We had a great time and great company!

Our illustrious ride to Deming started out on a cool
September morning. Bikes fueled, motors running,
and 3 riders ready to go. Where’s Gary??? Just at
the last minute, he pulled in on his new burgundy
1800 trike. Sorry guys he said, I’m running a little
late. Something about the bathroom, I don’t want to
talk about it.
After a quick cup of coffee, we were ready to go!
That being, Mike Dalby, on his new Dark Side
Harley, Gary Longhurst on his above mentioned
1800 trike. Did I say he got a new trike? And did I
mention, Mike is riding a new for him, Harley
Davidson and yours truly, with his every present co
rider, Michele, on our 1500 Goldwing. Enough of
the back story…
We finally got our bikes in gear and made our way
to Exit 89 and to Datil, NM. From Datil we headed
to Reserve for a quick breakfast and onto Silver City.
From there, it was to Deming for a great lunch at the
Adobe Deli, what an exceptional, eclectic décor,
large cigar lounge, a fabulous bar and steaks that are
out of this world.
After a great lunch, we were on our way to Hills-
boro. Four GeoCaches found and two more to go!
The ride from Deming to Hillsboro on NM27 is very
challenging with curves, hills, occasional debris in
the road and worth every minute of it. We did a
quick tour of Hillsboro, a little dirt bike riding on the
Goldwing, quick GeoCache at the Miller House and
it was time to head for home.
Of the three long distance rides we took this sum-
mer, this was by far the best. Absolutely perfect
scenery, curvy road after curvy road, very little to no
traffic and the best part, great company! 640 miles of
Pure Bliss!

I am done typing for the month, so no more
words from me….just photos of the places
I’ve been to in the last month. If you did not
go, you missed the FUN!

At our anniversary chapter picnic, I collected your mileage but did not hand out awards. I will do
that at the September meeting along with the September top mileage riders. Here are the top hon-
ors for mileage for August: Bike Division… Mike Dalby 1,021 miles, Tom Brewer 816 miles, and
Tony and Debbie Sciortino 681 miles. Trike Division… Dennis Elliot 2,522 miles, Gary and Janet
Longhurst 1,906 miles, and Dan and Barb Cok 1,212 miles. Fourteen returning riders from July/
August rode a total of 12,891 miles!! Great job to all!!
I will be collecting your mileage again this month, so show up early and see smiling me!! Get cof-
fee, mingle, purchase 50/50 tickets, eat, and have your plastic containers for picking raspberries at
the Salman Raspberry Ranch in Mora, New Mexico. Their website:
www.salmanraspberryranch.com.
