Last week we conducted Naplan Testing for Years 7 and 9 in Literacy and Numeracy. This is a national test where all students across the country are tested. This will greatly assist the P.E. and Sport programs by providing another safe and excellent facility. Finally, I have just received information from DET about the Camps and Excursions Program the State Government has rolled out. Pensioners, Health care card holders and War Veterans will be eligible for the annual $225 grant. Details will be on Compass about how to apply as well as at www.education.vic.gov.au/csef Applications close on 26th June 2015 and money will be given to schools in Term 3. “I have a conviction that it is only when we are put at full stretch that we can realise our full potential’ Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop.

From the House Leader Celebrating and acknowledging our students is an important part of Blackburn High School and Dunlop House. An important component of this is hearing from our students and finding out what makes them tick, so I have set up a Dunlop Vox Pop. What’s Vox Pop? It is a Latin phrase that translates to ‘Voice of the People’. I will be regularly asking a variety of questions to hear from our students in Dunlop. First up we heard from D1. Here is a sample of responses. We will be displaying these around Dunlop House for all to read and also feature this in the school magazine. Next time we will hear from D7.

Dunlop 1

What was the last good deed you did for someone else?

‘I was in a lolly shop- there was this baby who was pulling things off the shelves and onto the floor. I decided that I would pick up after this kid. I did it because it was slightly bugging me but also because someone could of tripped.’

I was invited to a school formal and obviously was

excited so I bought a dress and everything was planned.

However the person who invited me informed me that

his best friend won’t be coming, as her date had

cancelled. I felt horrible for her. So I suggested to my

date to take her to the formal instead of me. It would have

been unfair on her to miss out in her last year of school. I

felt great.

‘Yesterday I

helped my little cousin do his homework’

‘Volunteered in a café– they were lacking people. It made me

feel happy’.

‘Two weeks ago me and my friend saved a stray

dog. We did it because we wanted to make sure the

dog got home to its owner’s safely’

‘I helped an elderly lady cross the road because cars were beeping her’

My mum was out late, so I made dinner for everyone. It made me feel good because afterwards my parents told me that it was a big help that day.

Mid–Year Exams

Next week year 10-11 students w ill be commencing their mid-year exams on Thursday 28th May. Please Note:

Students must be in full-school uniform

Students must stay in the school grounds between exams and may only leave when they have completed all of their exams for the day

Students must be familiar with exam conditions and remember to bring all materials required for their exams exam.

Students are responsible for speaking to their class teacher about sitting exams at an alternative time, should they be unable to attend due to an exam clash.

Studying before exams is the best way to be prepared. You can make it easier by preparing a dedicated study area, breaking the tasks into manageable steps, revising what you've already studied, and managing expectations and pressure. Break it down You look at the amount of stuff you have to learn for a course or exam, and it feels like a huge, unmanageable task. So, break it down. Make a list of small, achievable study steps – maybe summarising a category or chapter – and tick each one off as you do it. Then, make a list that builds on that – you'll get further, more quickly, than you thought was possible. Make a space Decide on an area to study in (even just a corner of your room), and don't do anything else there. This'll make it easier to avoid procrastinating. Make it a clean, well-lit, comfortable space so you're not constantly getting up and walking away.

Take breaks Don't force yourself to push on through when you're tired. You can only absorb so much in one sitting. Try to take at least a ten minute break for every hour of study you do. Also, don't sacrifice sleep to study – you need to get good sleep to be on top of your game.

Revise Instead of just working your way from one end of the textbook to the other, take time to go over what you've already looked at. This will help it sink in and become more accessible in your memory. Go over last week's formulas, charts, essays or chapters while you're pushing on with this week's study.

Take the pressure off

Working up to exams can be (and probably is) pretty stressful. If pressure's motivating you, and isn't a problem, great! If it's getting to your head though, you can relieve it by:

talking to someone outside the situation

getting some time away from study

Last week during Mentor Groups Freeman and Melba ran inter house activities. Each mentor group in Freeman were paired with a Mentor Group in Melba. The groups were given a bag full of coloured plastic balls and some straws. 2 games were played, firstly straw soccer and basketball in the bin. The students had a “ball” and really enjoyed mixing with other houses.

Mentor Group Presentations – Every Monday and Friday mornings, individual mentor groups have been presenting in front of the rest of the house. Each student in each mentor group is encouraged to speak in front of the whole house. Some of the following topics below are going to be covered.

What will the world be like 20 years from now? How has the world changed over the previous 20 years? What will you need to be successful in this world? What are the skills and knowledge employers require? Do employers think graduates are prepared for the workforce? What occupations have experienced growth areas and what skills and

knowledge is required? What is the ‘best job’ in the world and why? What is the purpose of education? Why do you learn? What is ‘traditional’ knowledge and what is ‘modern’ knowledge? We would improve our local community/Melbourne/Australia by ….. What should students learn to improve society in the 21st century? How do you define success? Why have friends? Do we need friends? We will stop bullying by …. Design a piece of art work that explains/answers a question. Freeman Foundation. Walk to the G – mentor groups F6-F12 could consider/do this because the

Stress reduction We are approaching a busy period of the school year where projects are being submitted and class tests are frequent leading up to the next reporting period on June 8th. Reducing stress will lead to better well-being and a greater opportunity to achieve good grades. Having a positive attitude improves your learning and enjoyment at school. Strategies to reduce your stress and tension includes:

Sleeping well. Have a minimum of 9 hours each night and turn your electronics off by 9.00 pm each night. Try not to have them in your room. Leave your electronics on the kitchen table.

Eating well. Eat healthy foods with a reduction in fast food. Have a good breakfast each day.

Being organised. Plan and prioritise your day and week. Work on the important tasks with the nearest due date first.

Exercising regularly. Be active each day to improve your body and mind.

Learning to relax. Do leisure activities you enjoy. Spend time with family and friends.

Consider your health and how you are feeling each day. If students need assistance with their health or well-being, they should talk to their parents, a friend, mentor teacher and / or House Leader.

Studying. Thursday 28th May is when Years 10-11 examinations commence and they will run to Wednesday 3rd June. If students miss an examination, Thursday 4th June will be a catch-up day. Friday 5th June is a student free day where students are not expected to attend school. There will be no Year 10 classes from Thursday 28th May until Friday 12th June due to examinations and work experience. Year 9 examinations are later in the year.

The Long Walk Saturday 30th May is when Freeman House will continue supporting the Freeman Foundation with the Long Walk. Previous years has seen staff and students from Blackburn High School support this important event. We will be meeting the Freeman Foundation in Federation Square at 4pm. Please join us.

YEAR 8 CAMP Our year 8 students went on two different camps last week. The Phillip Island camp saw some very cold and blustery weather. Well done to all students and staff who had to be prepared to improvise and show resilience in some difficult positions. The camp proved a bonding experience for the students and staff. Some students were lucky enough to attend the Bogong outdoor adventure camp for the whole week. Whilst also very cold a highlight for many of these students was going to the snow for the first time and apparently the excellent food on offer. Thanks to the staff who gave up their time to attend the camps.

HOLLOWS FOUNDATION DOING AMAZING WORK TO HELP THOSE IN NEPAL

The recent Nepalese earthquake has seen devastating losses to both humans, animals and property. The Fred Hollows hospital in Katmandhu (Tilgana Institute of Opthalmology) has made itself a dedicated relief centre to help those in need. Many of the eye doctors in the centre have been working tirelessly to help patients that have been victims of the earthquake. The Hollows foundation has developed a special fund to help those in Nepal and we have decided as a house to donate all the money we raise on our June 19th Free Dress Day to help this cause. To donate you can visit the Hollows foundation website.

School Attendance is Vital We all want our children/students to receive the best possible education and the opportunity to engage in a wide range of career pathways that flow from this success. The foundation of a great education begins with students attending school every day. All the long term studies into success at school identify a clear link between the frequency of attendance and success at school. This success is not simply measured in improved academic outcomes but also the key attributes of resilience and persistence and skill associated with communication, co-operation and problem solving. Clearly missing school can and does have a major impact on a student’s future –missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. By the end of Year 10, the student has missed nearly half a year of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Every day counts. If for some reason a student is absent from school, it is most important that parents provide a note/reason on the day and this can be completed through the Parent Portal - Select Student Profile (for your son/daughter) Click the Attendance tab Click the Approvals tab Click Add Approval Enter the details of the absence (If you believe that any listed absences are incorrect please contact the school immediately) Click the 'Save' button. The school seeks the cooperation of parents in completing this task in a timely manner. Parents are reminded that your password is confidential and if you believe your son/daughter is aware of your login details, please login and use the 'Change Password' feature. If you experience any difficulties in completing this process please don’t hesitate to contact Sally on 8804-6407 for assistance. Work Habits – Consistency is the Key Blackburn High School emphasizes that learning consists of thinking, knowing, understanding and doing. These concepts are central to subject-based concepts as well as the ability to understand that consistent and productive work habits are required to be successful at school and life in general. We are already in the fifth week of term and students are urged to continue developing and consolidating consistent work habits, particularly the Year 10 and 11 students who have their Semester 1 examinations starting next week. Year 12 students also have a busy schedule of SACs. We urge parents to assist their children in these pursuits by providing appropriate study environments and assisting them to understand the value or regular revision of work covered in each subject. Return to Senior School Exams A letter containing details regarding the Year 10 and 11 examinations has been posted via Compass for all parents and students. It is important that families participate by reading the letter so that they may best support students to enjoy the most positive learning experience. Students should also be receiving copies of the examination timetable. We ask that you look these over with your child to ensure that it is complete. If any questions/issues arise please contact the House office to seek clarification. Year 10 and 11 examinations are undertaken for the purpose of establishing levels of student performance over the entire semester’s work. They enable students to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding across the subject content. Examinations are an important aspect of a holistic education. They facilitate the development of effective preparation and study skills as well as preparing students for future statewide examinations such as VCE exams. The Year 10 and 11 examination period commences on Thursday 28 May and concludes on Thursday 4 June. Normal classes are held on the days prior to the examination period. During the examination week students involved are only expected to attend school on the days of their examinations. Students must remain at school until the conclusion of their final examination and, as per normal school rules, North Blackburn Square during the time between these examinations remains out of bounds. Students must continue to attend school in full school uniform. If students are unable to attend any of the examinations they must speak with one of the Assistant Principals, Jane Richards or Tim Dalton, to negotiate a make-up examination. The House team wishes all students the very best of luck for their exams. We hope that they gain much from the experience and that they are able to learn about their current knowledge and skills and apply any lessons gained to set themselves up for an even more successful experience at the end of the year.

Year 8 Camp

The Bogong camp has a reputation as a challenging and rewarding experience. This year’s camp was similar and gave students a taste of living outdoors. The adage “there is no bad weather but bad clothing” was followed and we were able to dress for the conditions with wet and cold weather gear supplied when required. Orienteering and abseiling were completed in the pouring rain (and cold). All students had the opportunity to complete a climbing wall, and the high ropes course, and we were able to visit the snow and be in the freezing cold. It’s great to have these experiences as it takes the fear out of being in challenging weather. It may not be pleasant but showed students that is nothing to be scared of. A great and valuable life experience. Having a chef onsite who was definitely a gourmand making his own bread, cakes, jams, pickles and used local ingredients too (it was like being at a cooking school) also enhanced the experience! The only downside was the drive as it is 4 ½ hours on the bus to and from camp with windy roads for the last hour. R Hansen

1. Can my child bring another mobile device to school? To gain full access to what we have to offer in terms of the school network, internet, printers and software students are asked to bring one of the devices approved as part of our program, i.e. a Microsoft Surface devices. This device has been found to be the most robust of all the devices we have tried over the last two years.

2. Can my child bring a laptop instead of the designated device? Our program is a touch tablet program (Microsoft Surface). We have chosen a tablet as they are compact, lightweight and easy to carry. The size of the device means that it fits easily into both the school locker and the school bag. An interactive touch screen offers flexibility as well as being able to be used as both a camera and video device. 3. We can’t afford to buy a tablet, what are our options? We appreciate the substantial outlay required. Some companies lease/rent devices and others offer payment plans. This may be an option to consider. Our BYOD booklet outlines one such arrangement. 4. How will we connect our device to the school network? Our Network Manager will oversee this process. Student devices will have the school image uploaded and virus protection software added, be given access to the school intranet, internet and printers at this time. 5. What happens if my child’s device is lost or stolen? Like any personal item brought to school, the security of the device and its care is the responsibility of the student. The school does not have insurance to cover loss or damage to personal items belonging to students or staff. We recommend that all students have a secure lock for their locker and ensure it is locked at all times. A robust cover/case is also recommended. NOTE:

The school has devices available for short term loan for those times when a student’s own device is being repaired. These loans are period by period or daily loan. These devices cannot be taken home.

A copy of the full BYOD booklet can be found on the school website. http://www.blackburnhs.vic.edu.au/curriculum/bring-your-own-device-program/

The National Secondary School Computer Fund (NSSCF) provided all students in years 9-12 at Blackburn High School with a netbook provided that a $100 security deposit was paid. The program finished some time back and we are now approaching the end of the warranty period of the netbooks purchased. We would like to inform you that the school will no longer be responsible for the devices once the warranty period is over. We are planning to offer existing

devices to families at a cost of $50. If you choose to purchase your child’s device they will remain connected to the school server and have access to most of the programs they have currently whilst enrolled at the school. Once your child has left the school the programs and operating system on the device will remain active for a up to 90 days; after this time you will need to purchase the software you require. Some software will be removed at the time of purchase due to licencing issues. Any repairs required to devices after this time will become the responsibility of the owner of the device. The school will offer support in terms of software issues and access issues but not repairs to devices. We recommend that devices are checked for warranty issues prior to the end of the warranty period and we will advertise well in advance for students to come and have their device checked. If you do not wish to purchase your child’s device at this stage we ask that it be returned and you will receive a refund minus any damage costs on the returned device. Stay tuned ——- more information will be provided closer to the date.

Hi my name is Kelsey Peachman, I am in year 7 in Melba House. Very Special Kids is a unique organisation that supports families throughout their experience of caring for children with life-threatening conditions. My cousin was a Very Special Kid, she is now an angel in heaven and I miss her lots. I want to raise lots of money for Very Special Kids to say thank you for looking after Charlotte and all the Very Special Kids. I am going to be walking on a treadmill in the 24hour treadmill challenge to raise money for Very Special Kids. I am going to be walking/running for 30 mins 9pm-9.30pm today, Friday 22nd May and I need to raise at least $300.00 but would love to raise $500.00. Very Special Kids House is the only place in Victoria that children can go to for 24 hour care. Mum calls it a “little piece of heaven on earth.” Thank you so much to everyone who has donated already. If you would like to help me help other families that have children with life threatening conditions, please click on the link below. https://teamavah-vsktreadmill2015.everydayhero.com/au/kelsey Thank You Kelsey Peachman
