military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that includ-

ed training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Andrew and Debra Buckley of Birch Road, Greenwich, New York.

Buckley is a 2008 graduate of Cambridge Central School, New York.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chem-ical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Oldies but Goodies ShowThe Oldies But Goodies Rock ‘N’ Roll Show has announced their

upcoming show entitled “Holiday Cheers.” The show will be at the First United Methodist Church, 55 Fenn Street, in Pittsfield on Saturday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. This all volunteer cast of local entertainers invite you to a night of favorite songs of the fifties and sixties. The entire proceeds from their performance will benefit United Cerebral Palsy Association of Berkshire County, whose mission is to advance the independence of children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. The “Oldies” gang has been the opening act for well known entertainers such as “Danny and the Juniors”, “The Platters” and “The Coasters.”

That’s A WrapDepot Street’s newest business

By Mary Ann WhiteOn August 31, the doors finally opened to what

has become a popular breakfast, lunch and dinner spot for Dalton and the surrounding area.

Knowing that the original That’s A Wrap is located at 496 Tyler Street, I first thought that Jason Boucher was opening in another location. I soon found out that Christienne Briggs and boyfriend/partner Joe Daley were the owners of this franchise. Christienne said that Jason did advise them and was a huge help in getting started.

Walking into a very warm and welcoming atmo-sphere, I was greeted by Christienne and Joe. Tables and stools are located near windows and off to the right of the counter. Eat in, take out and delivery are available. Menu boards are located on the wall to the left and daily specials are posted on a chalkboard at the front of the counter.

Christienne has been in the restaurant business since she was 18 being a prep chef and working in delis. She said funding for this project came from Western Massachusetts Enterprises Fund, a non-profit organization whose mission is economic growth. They work to stimulate the economy with businesses that they believe in. “They were very helpful,” Christienne said. She added that she also worked with the SBA (Small Business Association).

Joe has been a baker for 18 years. He takes care of all the baked goods, which Christienne stressed are always fresh-baked. “Quality and consistency are very important,” she said.

A wide assortment of specialty wraps, salads, and sandwiches are available, and it all starts at break-fast where breakfast sandwiches, gourmet pastries, and fruit parfaits are some of the choices.

Clam chowder is always available for lunch or dinner, along with a soup of the day. Everything is fresh, chopped and sliced there. There are no fried foods and healthy is the word of the day.

When asked how she liked it so far Christienne said, “It has been crazy, busy, exhausting, but so far so good, no complaints. Everyone is eating, enjoying, chatting. I like it a lot.”

So when you are looking for a

new choice for breakfast, lunch or light dinner, stop by or give Christienne or Joe a call. My husband and I tried the Mile High Turkey Club, The Italiano and the clam chowder. Excellent, great taste, very filling. We’ll definitely go back.

Community Bike Ride

The Department of Community Development Pittsfield Parks and Recreation Program has announced its first Community Bike Ride event. The free, family ride will take place Saturday, October 17, beginning at 10 a.m. leav-ing from the Controy Pavilion at Burbank Park. Rider registration begins at 9 a.m. This six mile ride will travel to the Pittsfield State Forest and return back to the pavilion along the same roads. Younger riders are welcome and are encouraged to ride the trail along the lake within Burbank Park. Children 16 and under are required to wear a helmet to participate, but all participants are strongly encouraged to wear a helmet.

Biking related information will be available, and there will be a drawing with prizes for ride participants following the event. Refreshments will be provided courtesy of Bartlett’s Orchard, Big Y, and Guido’s Fresh Marketplace. Rain date is October 24. Fall Bicycle Ride Benefi t Huge SuccessCambridge Valley Cycling’s Fall Benefit Bicycle Ride on September

19 was a tremendous success. Close to 60 riders enjoyed beautiful scen-ery in and around Washington County, New York in support of Road to Recovery, an American Cancer Society program that gets cancer patients to their treatments if they don’t have access to transportation. On October 1, CVC president Van Fronhofer and treasurer Jim Bogue presented Road to Recovery’s Audrey Shaw with a check for $1,300.

SVC Professor Thomas Redden’s Journey to China

Southern Vermont College professor Thomas Redden will present a slide show of his trip to China on Thursday, October 15, at 2:45 p.m. in the Everett Mansion Theatre on campus. This event is open to the public.

Professor Redden will discuss some of the changes that he encoun-tered since his previous trip to China in 1978, and he will show some slides of Beijing and Shanghai.

Dr. Redden is the professor of History and Politics for The Donald Everett Axinn Division of Social Sciences. He visited Beijing and Shanghai representing Southern Vermont College at high school fairs.

From my Corner — by Susan J. Coons ...olympics... We were still living in

Pasadena, California, when the Summer Olympics were just beginning in 1984. Our neighbor’s daughter was one of the dancers who carried flags onto the field in the opening ceremonies. She attended daily rehearsals, and there was much excitement among the kids and parents for this opportunity.

We watched as Los Angeles, Pasadena, and other surround-ing communities geared up for this momentous event. Direction signs were installed on the freeways for the various venues; arenas were built and landscape architects were busy creating utopian environments. It brought jobs and new people to the area. And then there were the visitors. Many area residents made a killing by renting out their homes to visitors while they, themselves, left town. I designed a book cover for an author who wrote about how to make the most out of renting your home during the Olympics!

I’m a native of Chicago, and very macho about it. I love Chicago and it’s history. The people are friendly. It boasts a planetarium, science and history museum, art museums, aquarium, the Els (elevated trains), subways, commuter trains, double-deck busses, hundreds of neighbor-hoods, and exciting architecture. There are beautiful waterfront parks and beaches, Wrigley Field, the Cubs, the Water Tower, the Palmer House, great restaurants, Old Chicago, Comiskey Park, the White Sox, Soldier Field and ‘da Bears. There are the stock yards, Chicago’s frontier history, Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, gangsters and prohibition. Man, I love Chicago! I’m proud to be from Mayor Daly’s city; our President’s city.

I don’t have any problem with President Obama taking a day trip to Copenhagen to boast about his hometown. So many good things would happen as a result of the Olympics coming to North America. But, alas, it was not meant to be and the Summer Olympics will open in Rio.

I’m disappointed, but know that Brazilians will have the opportu-nity to benefit from this wonderful event. It will be wonderful for their economy. It will be an opportunity for the central government and local authorities to deal with their disastrous crime issue. New build-ings and parks will sprout up, easing their unemployment and poverty problems.

I do have one very great disappointment, and that is the number of Americans who were hoping that the President would fail in his attempt to influence the Olympic Committee. Seeing those people cheering and clapping against our President and our country was astonishing and disheartening. There is a slice of the American populace that just doesn’t want President Obama to succeed at anything. Nothing. Even if it will help our country reverse the rate of unemployment, help stabilize our economy and give fellow Americans the benefit of the same kind of health care offered to government employees (paid for by our taxes). The philosophy of “Just say no” will eventually come back to bite them, and you know where!

SVC Health Care Lecture Looks at Writings and Insights on

Living with Cancer Dr. Marsha Fonteyn,

nurse scientist former-ly of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute of Boston, Massachusetts, will offer a lecture, entitled “The Experience of Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer: Insight Gained from Women’s

Expressive Writings,” at Southern Vermont College on Tuesday, October 27, at 2:45 p.m. in the Everett Theatre. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Dr. Fonteyn’s address is part of the College’s James L. FitzGerald Annual Invitational Health Services Lecture series. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a reception in the Burgdorff Gallery.

Fonteyn has extensive nursing practice and experience in the field of intensive and emergency care, home health and oncology. Her SVC talk is based on findings from a recent study she was involved in with

a team of nurse scientists who analyzed the journal writings of women diagnosed with breast cancer. Fonteyn will describe the major issues and concerns with which these women have struggled on a daily basis.

Fonteyn is the author of “Thinking Strategies for Nursing Practice,” which provides readers with a framework for maximizing clinical rea-soning skills for nursing practice, as well as the author of over 50 journal articles. She was the 2008 recipient of the National Nursing Excellence Award for Mentoring from “Nursing Spectrum” magazine.

Steve and Donna started with Home Instead Senior CareÆ in 2001 and opened the South Street office at the beginning of 2001.

The office staff consists of Sylvia Les, who is the human resources direc-tor. Her job is to train and supervise all the CAREGivers. She said she is always looking to hire good people. scheduling for new clients and is dedicated to them for the first month. Gina Isenhart is the outreach coordinator and is also an LPN. Her job is to educate the community as to what Home Instead Senior Care offers. She also does the assessments on new clients.

Another important staff member is Debbie Stillman who is admin-istrative assistant. She answers the phones, greets walk-ins, makes sure other staff members have what they need and handles Accounts Receivable and Payable. Kathy Quinones is an RN. She is clinical care coordinator and does assessments and client care.

Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) celebrates its 17th anniversary of festive Halloween parades and parties with the 17th annual North Bennington Halloween Parade on Friday, October 30, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Join the festivities as children, artists, musicians, bellydancers, drummers, friends and neighbors dress up and promenade through town, accompanied by music, dancing, and large sculptural costumes.

Bennington Museum Introduces Programs for Pre-Schoolers

Developed and presented in collaboration with the Bennington Free Library, the Bennington Museum is pleased to announce a new pro-gram designed specifically for the younger set and their parents or care-givers. Museum ABCs is a pre-school story hour that will take place each month at 1:30 p.m. in the galleries of the Bennington Museum.

Designed especially for children ages 3 to 5, the program includes stories about the month’s topic, visits to galleries in the Bennington Museum to observe and talk about an actual piece of art, and an art or craft activity. All children must be accompanied by at least one adult.

The first program is on October 15 and revolves around quilts. Participants will hear stories about quilts and look for familiar shapes,

colors, and images in quilts from the current exhibit “Patience to Raise the Sun: Art Quilts from Haiti.” The children will be invited to make a quilt on paper, using pre-cut fabric squares. (Adults can join in too.)

Due to a gift from an anonymous donor, the programs are free. Registration is not required, but is recommended and can be made by contacting Deana Mallory at 802-447-1571 or calling the Bennington Free Library at 802-442-9051. “Autumn with Grandma Moses” is scheduled for November 19 and “Toys” will be held on December 17.

Bennington Garden ClubThe Bennington Garden Club’s Awards Committee held a tea on

October 2 at the Vermont Veterans’ Home to recognize the unique contributions of Harold Makepeace to the horticultural ambience of the home.

He served his country in the South Pacific Theater during World War II. Once a photographer, artist, sculptor, retired university professor and proprietor of the Spiral Shop & Gallery in Marlboro, Vermont, Harold has been a resident for two years.

While the outdoor gardens are a project of the Bennington Garden Club, the solarium has become the domain of Mr. Makepeace who devotes his days to coaxing plants into bloom for all the residents to enjoy. To the staff, he is known as the “plant doctor”.

Occasionally taking a break to enjoy the sunshine outside, Harold does some watering and deadheading and offers advice to those who maintain the gardens. Something of an eccentric, Harold happily accepted the kudos of club members who say he symbolizes the pur-pose for which the garden was installed back in the spring of 1999. He was awarded a certificate of appreciation for enriching the lives of those who live and visit there.

Harvest BazaarThe annual Harvest Bazaar to benefit the School of Sacred Heart St.

Chesterfield Historical SocietyThe program topic on Thursday, October 15, will be “Calvin Coolidge:

at Home in Northampton”. When Calvin Coolidge is mentioned, some stereotypes come to mind-quiet, if not silent; frugal, if not cheap; digni-fied, if not wooden. This talk will describe the thirtieth president’s seven homes in Northampton, the people he roomed with, and neighbors he encountered. Did those who knew him in this intimate way confirm or deny the commonly held beliefs? In the end, Calvin Coolidge, a complex figure in American history, will be humanized – his character, values and personality brought more in focus. Speaker is author Susan Well.

Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 7:30 p.m. This event will be held at the Chesterfield Senior Center.

Dinner price is $10 per person with the menu to include chicken and biscuits, a beverage and pumpkin pie for dessert. The public is invited to join the dinner and/or the evening program.

Hoopsters Get Ready in Hoosick FallsThe Hoosick Youth & Community Center’s Annual Basketball

Program will begin on Saturday, November 7. This fun recreational program is open to boys and girls from Kindergarten to 8th grade and is geared toward improving skills and teamwork. Participants enjoy weekly practices and league games.

The program for students in 3rd to 8th grade starts with a manda-tory clinic on Saturday, November 7 at the following times: 3rd and 4th grade – 12-1:30 p.m.; 5th and 6th grade – 1:30-3 p.m.; 7th and 8th grade – 3-4:30 p.m.

Practices for these grades will begin the week of November 9. There will be 12 games and playoffs with the program concluding by mid-February. All games are held at the Youth & Community Center (YCC) on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

The season for Kindergarten-2nd grade students will begin on Saturday, December 5 from 8-9 a.m.

All teams will be headed by a volunteer coach and practices will be held once per week. Volunteer coaches are still needed.

All players must register at the Youth Center. Registration forms can be completed Monday through Friday from 3-6 p.m. or on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. beginning on November 6.

The fee to participate is $35 for members of the YCC or $70 for non-members. The fee includes the 13-week program, practice time, league T-shirt and an end-of-the-season celebration.

Teens Take Over VAE’s Big Studio Every Tuesday!

VAE’s Free Open Studio for Teens, held from 3 to 5 p.m. every Tuesday during the school year, encourages teenagers ages 13+ to explore art: working with paint, pastel, wood, plaster, cement, fabric inks, mixed media, and more — or incorporate writing, poetry, and drumming into their work.

VAE staff artist, Olli Johnson supervises the group, offering guid-ance in various projects and mediums. Teenagers can drop in, and are encouraged to try new things, experiment, and develop art skills while working individually or in collaborations. Teens can work on school related projects or develop portfolios for admission to college or art school, and can “BYOM” (Bring Your Own Music). VAE artists will be available for consultation, advice, and technical support — and guest artist-volunteers are welcome to visit, please call ahead.

Local Fitness Centers Launching Healthy Lifestyles for Teens 101

Off The Wall Racquet and Fitness and Curves of Bennington have teamed together to establish the after school program Healthy Lifestyles for Teens 101 (“HLT 101”). Off The Wall owner Huff Templeton and Curves of Bennington owner Judy Brownell have joined forces to help local teens ages 13 to 18 incorporate regular exercise into their lifestyle.

The pilot program will run from October 19 to December 19 from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. HLT 101 is open to the first 15 teens who sign up at each facility. The program at Curves of Bennington is for female teens and the program at Off The Wall Racquet and Fitness is co-ed. The cost for the 8 week program at either location is $20 (plus tax) per teen and must be paid at sign up. All teens under 18 will be required to have parental consent before participating. During the first week female teens will be able to try both locations to determine which facility they choose to be enrolled at. Teens must agree to participate 3 times per week and are responsible for their transportation to and from the program.

Home Caregivers Workshop Held at Bennington Free Library

The Bennington Free Library and the Bennington County Caregivers Coalition are pleased to announce a new workshop in the Home Caregivers’ series on Thursday, Otober 22, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The workshop, “Funding Options for Healthcare,” will offer home-caregivers information on Medicare, Medicaid and the Choices for Care programs available to Vermont residents.

Featured speakers are Jessica Bird, Long Term Care Clinical Coordinator from the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living, and Carolyn Hickok, Long Term Care Benefits Specialist with the Vermont Division of Economic Services, Department of Children and Families.

Funded through a grant from the Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging, the workshop is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is recommended and a light supper will be served.

Curves Promotes Wellness and Breast Cancer Awareness

In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness, Curves of Bennington will host a special Girls Get Together Party on Thursday October 22, from 3-7 p.m. Studies have shown that physical exercise reduces the risk of breast cancer and Curves wants to take this time to encourage the women of Bennington to learn more about the impact that well-ness has on preventing cancer. A healthy diet, regular exercise, monthly breast self-exams and yearly mammograms together are essential in breast cancer prevention.

Judy Brownell says, “No one will want to miss this party. A lot of women know about breast cancer prevention, but don’t act on it. I like to think of it as that ignored sticky-note reminder on the bathroom mirror. At our Girls Get Together Party, we are going to put action to that sticky note.”

Those attending the Girls Get Together Party will participate in a casual afternoon packed with valuable conversation, information and encouragement. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take part in a fundraiser to support American Cancer Society with the purchase of “In Memory Of ” or “In Honor Of ” donation certificates. “The American Cancer Society has always been near to our hearts,” Brownell says. “This is a fundraiser that touches so many of our ladies.”

Members and non-members alike are invited to participate in the Girls Get Together Party. Those wishing to become a member will receive a special discount in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness. Bennington Curves will offer a $0 service fee for those who provide proof of either a recent mammogram or a donation to American Cancer Society from October 19 through 24.

Brownell says, “Curves of Bennington is committed to helping the women of our community live healthy and strong lives and this Girls Get Together Party is just one way that we can help encourage them.”
