Two teams of students and teachers at Mount Anthony Union Middle School took a five-mile “Hike for Hunger” on Friday, September 18, starting at the school, looping around downtown Bennington, with a brief stop at the park beside Merchants Bank at the Four Corners.

The participating teams were Unkai Team, with teachers Catherine Coons and Jerry O’Connor, para-educator Ernie Tatro and Brian Morrissey, and the sixth grade Unkai Team students; Alpheus Team

with teachers Rebecca Sausville, Mary Ellen Breen, Matthew Rice, John Cossa, and Allison Brigham; para-educators Marilou Craft and Louise Mason, and the eighth grade Alpheus Team students. Chaperones were Jenn Austin, Megan McCoy, and Ted Campe.

The hike was an opportunity to raise awareness about hunger in Vermont, to create opportunities that build healthy lifestyles and community steward-ship, and foster teambuilding for students. All funds raised will benefit hungry Vermonters.

Pancake BreakfastOn Saturday, September 19,

from 7:30-10:30 a.m., Grace Christian School will be host-ing an All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast with all proceeds to benefit the Junior/Senior Class Mission Trip Fund. The cost for the breakfast is only $6 per per-son which includes all you can eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee or tea! The Mission team will be headed to Guatemala in March of 2010 where they will be working at the Songs of Joy Ministry, which is a home for orphans. Even Jamie Frankin won-ders how Haitian quilts ended up in the Bennington Museum. As curator of collections at the Bennington Museum, he recent-ly celebrated the opening of “Patience to Raise the Sun: Art Quilts from Haiti,” an initiative that he organized with help from many organizations and people.

“The inception of this show is rooted in a humanitar-ian project based in a Haitian Catholic school,” Franklin said. “The project, PeaceQuilts, is a non-profit organization and its U.S. coordinator, Maureen Mathews McClintock, lives in Bennington.”

The show is organized in four parts. The first covers quilts based on nature: rich valleys, foli-age, trees, fruits, fish, etc. Then is a section of Biblical quilts, not uncommon to women working with nuns in a Catholic center. Franklin said that the presence of Voodou overtones in some of these quilts hearkens to a synthe-sis of Roman Catholic and West African traditions.

Another part is dedicated to proverb quilts, works on which the Haitian oral tradition man-ifests itself as a defining char-acteristic of the island’s culture. Finally, there are those quilts that are an adaptation of past quilt-ing traditions, such as the North

American, but with a uniquely Haitian flavor.

In all, Franklin said the 22 quilts will eventually morph into a traveling show which will draw interest from institutions centered on crafts. All the quilts are for sale, to be released when-ever the show’s life span expires, and other quilts not selected for the show will be for sale in the museum’s gift shop.

“Patience to Raise the Sun: Art Quilts from Haiti,” is currently on exhibit at the Bennington Museum through November 8.

PittsfieldHalloween Parade

InformationThe Department of

Community Development Recreation Program has announced that the Halloween Parade will be held on Friday, October 30, at 7 p.m. We encour-age your school or community/civic group to participate in this Pittsfield tradition! Every ‘unit’ will need to complete a General Entry Form, and those entering a float must also complete the Float Entry Form; for the parade, all float entries must have a theme that is Halloween related. The forms are available online at www.pittsfield.com, or by calling the number below. The deadline for completed forms is Friday, October 9.

All parade participants must attend one mandatory meeting; one will be on Thursday, October 22 and the other on Monday, October 26 in room 203 of City Hall, 70 Allen Street, Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Both begin at 6:30 p.m. Please choose one of the two dates that works best for you and notify the Recreation Activities Coordinator. One rep-resentative of each organization must attend a meeting if they plan to be in the parade as a float, band or marching unit.

Service NotesArmy Reserve Spec. Eric M. Cleverly has graduated from Basic

Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma.During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army

mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weap-ons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

Cleverly graduated in 2001 from Brattleboro Union High School, Brattleboro, Vermont, and received a bachelor’s degree in 2005 from Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston, Massachusetts.

Army Reserve Sgt. Thomas A. Reale has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military opera-tions involving members of the U.S. armed forces and coalition forces participating in efforts to free and secure Iraq. Mission objectives focus on force protection, peacekeeping, stabilization, security and coun-ter-insurgency operations as the Iraqi transitional governing bodies assume full sovereign powers to govern the peoples of Iraq.

Members from all branches of the U.S. military and multinational forces are also assisting in rebuilding Iraq’s economic and governmental infrastructure, and training and preparing Iraqi military and security forces to assume full authority and responsibility in defending and pre-serving Iraq’s sovereignty and independence as a democracy.

Reale, a motor transport operator, is normally assigned to the 353rd Transportation Company, Buffalo, Minnesota. He has six years of mili-tary service.

He is the son of Peter A. and Lynne A. Reale of County Route 56, Ticonderoga, New York.

The sergeant graduated in the year 2000 from Ticonderoga High School, and received a bachelor’s degree in 2004 from Resselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York.

It’s that time of year when the HFCS PTA gears up for their annual Fall Festival, now in its ninth year. Berkshire Immigrant Center Presents Third Meeting on

Comprehensive Immigration ReformThe Berkshire Immigrant Center will sponsor its third commu-

nity meeting on the current status of immigration legislation and Comprehensive Immigration Reform on September 24th from 12:00 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the First Baptist Church, 88 South Street, Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The event is free and the general public is invited to attend.

The meeting will be presented by Erik Balsbaugh, Director of Organizing at the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA). This is a great opportunity for immigrants, advo-cates, and interested community members to gather, learn, and address ways to work together to help fight for practical solutions that benefit us all and are rooted in the restoration of the rule of law, earned citizenship, united families, and fair treatment of workers.

The meeting will present facts about the current immigration land-scape, offer legislative updates, and focus on proposed facets of immi-gration reform including increasing the number of available humani-tarian and non-immigrant visas, family reunification, border security and enforcement policies, the Dream Act, AgJobs, and a legalization program that will provide a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.

Sheffield Historical Society Three-Roast Feast

The Sheffield Historical Society is holding its seventh annual summer feast at the American Legion Hall in Sheffield on Saturday, September 26, from 4-7 p.m. Join roaster Scott Ryan and the Society membership for this hearty community special.

It’s small-town America at its best. Choose among roast beef, turkey, or pork, or try all three! Baked beans, salad, and all the fixings will be served along with an assortment of homemade cakes and pies for des-sert.

Fish Stocking Program is currently taking orders for Rainbow and Brook Trout, as well as Largemouth Bass, Channel Catfish, Fathead Minnows and Crayfish!

The fish will be distributed in the parking lot of our Agriculture & Life Sciences Building in Troy. A fish-stocking permit is required through NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. This per-mit is available free of charge and will last for five years. Fall is a great time to stock your pond!

Trout do best in spring fed or deeper ponds. Bass and Catfish can tolerate a lot of conditions! With Trout you can expect to need to restock every 3 years, with Bass usually reproducing on their own! Again this year we have fish food! With fish pellets you can get a tre-mendous increase in growth rates! Don’t wait, call for an order blank! New this year, the fish stocking order blank is online. HFCS PTAKicks off 2009-2010 Year

The Hoosick Falls Central School Parent Teacher Association (PTA), a group of involved, caring, and committed moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, teachers, administrators, and alumni, is underway with the new school year. PTA has been active all summer preparing for the year, and they’re helping to ease students and teachers back to school at the open houses and other activities.

The PTA will continue to make a difference in 2009-2010 by giving $100 to each grade level for extra supplies; by hosting several family-oriented events, Fall Festival, Family Fun Bingo, appreciation days, the monthly food co-op, and a holiday gift shop; by volunteering time and offering funding for countless programs and events; and much more.

PTA holds business meetings seven times a year. Meetings this year will be held in the HFCS Elementary School Library from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on October 6, November 3, January 5, March 2, May 4, and a future date to be determined in June. The Executive Officers are excited about what PTA members can do for the school and the children

in our school district, and want to remind people that although attending meetings is beneficial, having involvement away from the meetings is most important! Members that aren’t able to join the meetings help in other ways too. They volunteer their time at events, donate gifts and supplies, and are financially supportive with their $5 membership dues.

The team of officers leading with lots of enthusiasm this year are: president Margaret Stevens; vice president Sharon Sigot; treasurer Amy Sutton; secretary Linda Bird; and teacher repre-sentatives Gina Harrison (Junior/Senior High School) and Sarah Fleming (Elementary School).

UCS Fall Wellness Workshops Open to the Community

United Counseling Service is offering an exceptional opportunity for community members to learn skills that increase personal effectiveness and enhance relationships.

The Fall 2009 Wellness Workshops at Northshire UCS address a range of topics that can help anyone unleash their full potential.

“The Wellness Workshops can help people resolve conflicts, manage stress, strengthen relationships and be a good parent,” said Northshire UCS Director Peg Gregory.

The series of four Wellness Workshops begins with a classic approach to good parenting, “How To Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk,” presented by UCS Clinician Laura Sieme-Giordano.

This workshop on Monday and Wednesday, September 28 and 30, gives parents the tools to raise healthy, cooperative children. The work-shop meets 5:45-7:15 p.m. at The Northshire Day School, and there is a $30 fee with free child care available.

Next on the program, Conflict Resolution will offer successful approaches to managing difficult relationships and personal conflicts. Presented by UCS clinician Dean Hammer, PsyD, this workshop will be held at the Northshire UCS Building on Tuesday, October 6 and 13, from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m., and there is a fee of $50.

Stress Management, presented by Northshire UCS Director Peg Gregory, will show participants how to identify and reduce stress in life and effectively improve overall well-being. The workshop will be held at The Northshire UCS Building on Thursday, October 8 and 15, from

Fall Fete at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, Cambridge

St. Luke’s of Cambridge, New York invite you to a tent-covered tag sale on Saturday, September 26 consisting of many great items collected from several homes that are downsizing. Also a silent auction will be held at the Parish house. Both events begin at 8 a.m. sharp (coffee avail-able).

Redroom at Main Street StageOn Saturday, September 26, the Redroom, Main Street Stage’s popular

cabaret series will take on American History. Doors open at 8 p.m. for life drawing and light refreshment. The locally written and produced show will start at 9 p.m. Every Redroom is a new show and a great deal. $10 covers an entire night’s worth of entertainment.

The performance will include a dramatic reading of Charles Guiteau’s play written four days before he was hanged for assassinating President Garfield in addition to company written skits (“The Writer’s Room for National Treasure 3”), songs and readings all giving Redroom’s take on American History, just in time for school to begin.

The Redroom was rated at five out of five by the Berkshire Eagle’s “Region After Dark.” It is an artist’s playground where genre lines don’t matter. One audience member called it something you’d see in someone’s basement in Greenwich Village during the 1960’s. From 8-9 p.m., enjoy a glass of wine, mingle with the cast and other guests while a live model poses in the window. Bring your own art supplies or use the ones we provide. At 9 p.m., the variety show begins, full of readings, original skits and plays, improvisational rap, dance, local musicians and anything else we can get our hands on.

Judaica Artist Emmett Leader’s Work on Exhibit

In Celebration of the Centennial of the Bennington Jewish Community

Now through November 8, the Bennington Museum will host “Revisiting Traditions — Illuminating Our Times: Works by Emmett Leader” in celebration of the Centennial of the Jewish Community in Bennington. In this show, Leader uses a visual language inspired primarily by the wall paintings of wooden synagogues and Jewish gravestone carvings, and ritual objects found in nineteenth century Eastern Europe. His work incorporates wood, clay, photographs, text, historic and found objects that speak to the narrative of both loss and vitality. Leader’s use of an ancient Mediterranean method of glazing called terrasigillata, his engraving of biblical quotes in Hebrew text, and his signature colors make his work recognizable. “In making my work, I tap into the power of this visual communication to engage and convey universal stories.” says Leader.

Writing of his inspiration, Leader states, “Countless photographs depicting a cluster of purposeful, if not elegant buildings gathered around a tree-lined village common would serve us well as we begin to tell the story of the settlement of most small Vermont towns. Looking closer one would see that all of these towns were graced with at least one church steeple. The exception by far was when there was also a Synagogue.

This exhibit is the story about the community of one such Synagogue that is celebrating its centennial. Part of the story began when the Jewish Community in Bennington was first organized in 1909, and in 1923 built its first house of prayer, naming itself Congregation Beth El.

Another part of the story began earlier. Among the townspeo-ple of Bennington in 1909 were my grandparents, Rabbi Isaac and Freda Leader, recent immigrants from Russia. “Revisiting Traditions — Illuminating Our Times: Works by Emmett Leader” revisits the world they left behind in Eastern Europe, and the life they made in Bennington, Vermont. It illuminates a universal story of adaptation - leaving a cohesive cultural and religious community, and moving to a world where they were a religious minority - and the challenges this life brought to maintaining their religious practices and identity.

This history, though at times painful and at times joyful, ultimately brings us to this time and place to celebrate this enduring Jewish Community.”

A resident of Northampton, Massachusetts, Leader is a nation-ally recognized creator of Judaica sculptures. Working for almost two decades in this medium, he has helped to bring it from relative obscurity to greater public attention. Showcased in many juried and national shows, Leader’s work has been featured at the prestigious SOFA (Sculpture Objects and Functional Art) Expo in New York. His 2007 SOFA creation was an installation called Slonim Revisited, an homage to the shtetl where his grandparents lived. The following year, it was entitled Dayenu and portrayed pilgrimages of people bringing offerings to the great temple in Jerusalem.

Leader’s parents were both born and raised in Bennington, and Leader himself was born in Andover, Vermont where he often felt ostra-cized by the community due his Jewish family being the only one in the town. Although his parents were very interested in farming and agricul-ture, similar to many of their neighbors, they were considered eccentric within the community. His family eventually moved to Northampton,

but continued to travel to Vermont for vacations and weekends. At seventeen, Leader independently moved back to Vermont where he completed high school.

A graduate from Bennington College, Leader earned a degree in ceramics and sculpture and then became studio manager of Greenwich House Pottery in New York City. His spiritual quest took him to Israel in 1981, where he worked in a carpentry shop on Kibbutz Yagur. Eventually, Leader came across photographs of synagogues and grave-stones in Eastern European shtetls. Recognizing this as the world his grandparents left behind, Leader’s personal identity and belonging were profoundly discovered in these photos. The beginning of Leader’s Judaica artistry was found.

“Revisiting Traditions - Illuminating Our Times: Works by Emmett Leader” is supported in part by a grant from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and private donors. The monthly meals are organized by First Baptist Church of Cambridge, with the assistance of community churches and organizations such as 4H clubs and Scouts, etc.

The Bennington Museum is hosting the third annual Southern Vermont Home Brew and Microbrew Festival on Saturday October 3, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Old Bennington Brush Company on North Street in downtown Bennington. Sponsored by Sysco Food Services of Albany and Madison Brewing Company of Bennington, this year’s event features over 25 home brews for tasting along with a number of microbrews from brewers like Brown’s Brewing Co. of Troy, New York, Northampton Brewery of Northampton, Massachusetts, McNeill’s Brewery of Brattleboro, and Madison’s Brewing of Bennington. What a perfect way to spend a crisp fall afternoon.

The ticket price of $25 at the door ($20 advance purchase) includes admission to the event, five 4 oz. tastings, a commemorative tasting glass, great food from Madison Brewing - Brew Pub & Restaurant, live music, brewing demonstrations, and medieval tournaments. Further brew tastings can be purchased for $1 each. Advance tickets can be purchased by calling the Bennington Museum at 802-447-1571. $12 tickets are available for those not tasting - designated drivers and young people under 21. Children 12 and under are free. Advance tickets will be held at the call window at the event.

Home brews will be judged by an expert panel including National Judge Greg Mobley. The winning brew will be created for a produc-tion run and carried on tap for a limited time at Madison’s Brewing Company, Bennington. Cash prizes will also be awarded.
