Exhibition: Trodde Du?/Did you think?

When you see a little girl – do you think she will become an astrophysicist or a quantum chemist?

‘Did you think?’ encourages the audience to think about their own expectations regarding career choices of females. The exhibition is organized by Kathrin H. Hopmann and Karen O. H. Dundas from the Dept. of Chemistry at UiT. Both are working in fields that are still far from gender-balanced. Perhaps, female students do not choose certain career pathways, because they lack visible female role models. On occasion of the 50 year anniversary of UiT, we highlight female scientists, professors, leaders, and Masters at UiT. Females in academia exist, and it is time to notice them!

Did you think they would become Natural Scientists?

If children are asked to draw a scientist, do you think they draw a man or a woman?

The perception that researchers and natural scientists are male is slowly changing in our society. When children in the 1960’s and 1970’s were asked to draw a scientist, 1% drew a woman. By 2016, the number of females scientists that were drawn was estimated to be around 28%.1

From 1960 to 2013, the number of female scientists has increased from 28% to 49% in biological sciences and from 8% to 35% in chemistry.1 In 2017, 42% percent of students enrolling into mathematical and natural science subjects in Norway were females.2 However, although more women now choose natural sciences, there are still many obstacles to be overcome before we can say that women in the field of natural sciences have the same chances to succeed as men.

The roll-up “Did you think they would become natural scientists?” shows female employees and students at UiT working in many fascinating areas of natural science, from medical biology to marine geophysics to theoretical chemistry.

Females in Natural Science: Aya Ismael is a PhD student in Organic Chemistry at UiT.

Interview with a Natural Scientist at UiT: Ljiljana Pavlovic

Scientific field: Computational chemistry

Affiliation: The Department of Chemistry, Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences, Faculty for Science and Technology

How long have you been employed at UiT? I have been employed at UiT since 2016.

What is your job? I am a PhD student in Computational Chemistry. My job is to design powerful catalysts for the transformation of the green house gas CO2 into other more valuable molecules, using computational methods.

Have you experienced any difficulties as a woman in your field? I haven not experienced any difficulties as a woman in the field of chemistry. However, some job interviews in my past were inappropriate. For instance I have been asked about whether I would like to have children one day. When my answer was Yes, they told me that they could not offer me the job as they could not afford for me to go on maternity leave. I have also been asked other irrelevant questions about my civil status and my living arrangements.

Did you think they would become leaders? Think about your work leader for a moment: Is it a male or a female? Leaders hold the main responsibility for a group, a project, a section or a full organization. 38% of leaders in Norway are female according to recent statistics,3 meaning 62% are men. However, there is no denying that there have been large improvements in the field. UiT has had a female rector since 2013, Anne Husebekk. She is the second female rector at UiT (the first was Tove Bull, 1996-2001).

The roll-up “Did You Think They Would Become Leaders?” shows female leaders at UiT, from research group leaders and office leaders to department and faculty leaders.

Interview with a leader at UiT: Kathrine Tveiterås

Scientific field: Organization and Management

Affiliation: Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics

How long have you been employed at UiT: Since 2006 in various positions; researcher, PhD-student, assistant professor and head of department before the position I currently hold.

What is your job? I am Dean of the Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics.

Have you experienced any difficulties as a woman in your field? Being a relatively young female leader has caused some confusions, especially in different cultural contexts, where I have been mistaken as a student or somebody’s wife. I normally just smile at this, but it is more challenging to do the job when working with someone who for some reason has predetermined thoughts of what I represent because of my gender. In general, my generation and I are privileged to follow the many examples of strong women in academia and the society.

Did you think they would become professors?

Think about the visual image of a professor for a moment.

Did you picture a man or a woman?

Professor is the highest title achievable title in academia. Sadly, the rank of professor is not gender-balanced in Norway. In 2017, 29 % of all professors in Norway were female, 71 % were male. Certain fields show very little balance, with 20% female professors in Natural Sciences/Mathematics and only 12% in Technology (see graph4). UiT currently has 33% female professors (all fields combined). Interestingly, the faculty for Humanities, Social Sciences and Education (HSL) at UiT currently has 50% female professors.

The roll-up “Did you think they would become professors?” shows female professors, associate professors and professor II’s from different fields at UiT. A second roll-up “Did you think half of the professors at the HSL-faculty were women?“ shows 52 female professors at HSL.

Interview with a professor at UiT: Rikke Gjærum

Scientific field: Drama & Theatre Studies

Affiliation: Institutt for Vernepleie, Helse-fak

How long have you been at UiT? Since 1998

What is your job? Prof. in Applied Theatre and Head of Artic Centre of Welfare and Disability Research.

Have you experienced any difficulties as a woman in your field?

Did you think they would become Masters?

A Master has completed graduate studies in a specific discipline and has been awarded the Master’s degree by an University or College. A Master’s degree is typically a prerequisite for embarking on an academic career.

Interestingly, more women than men now earn Master’s degrees in Norway. From 41% females in 2004, the number has risen to 56% females in 2018.2

The roll-up “Did you think they would become Masters?” shows females at UiT that hold a Master’s degree in different subjects, from law, to linguistics to philosophy to performance art.

The graph shows awarded Master’s degrees in Norway during 2004 to 2017.2

Have you experienced any difficulties as a woman in your field?

The gender imbalance in the field of philosophy is significant. As a student, I have experienced how male dominance is not benefiting the climate in the classroom. I believe that there still are prejudices against women that affects how women are perceived, how they perceive themselves and even how they perform. If we mitigate the problems caused by implicit biases and stereotype threats, I am convinced that it would benefit my field as a whole.
