Thank you to all our students who work and smile while keeping our school safe.
Community VolunteerismOur fabulous PTG Board has recently been discussing why people volunteer, or, why they don’t volunteer. PTG President. Mrs. Michelle Hammon (Miranda 6th) discovered an intriguing article by Evelyn Beck explaining such and graciously shared this article. In the coming weeks you may learn more about why and why don’t people volunteer, especially if you attend PTG meetings. Beck’s reasons why people volunteer: 1. To make a difference in people’s lives. 2. To support an organization, community or cause. 3. To learn something new. 4. To develop personally or professionally. 5. To meet people. 6. To feel better about themselves.Beck’s reasons why people don’t volunteer: 1. They have an idealized view of people who volunteer and feel that they don’t measure up. 2. What they do as a volunteer doesn’t match what they had hoped to get out of volunteering. 3. They tried, but no one contacted them. Or they showed up but were not needed or were not given anything meaningful to do. 4. They don’t understand what they are being asked to do. 5. No one asked them.

PRAYER
Lord, your commandment of love is so
simpleand so challenging.
Help me to let go of my pride,to be humble in my penance.
I want only to live the way you ask me to love,
to love the way you ask me to live.
I ask this through your son, Jesus,
who stands at my sidetoday and always.
Amen

• In Ireland, St. Patrick's Day is a religious holiday similar to Christmas and Easter.
• There are 33.7 million U.S. residents who are of Irish ancestry. That number is almost nine times the population of Ireland itself.
• March 17th is when Patrick died.
• St. Patrick wasn't Irish.
• Many claim the shamrock represents faith, hope, and love, or any number of other things but it was actually used by Patrick to teach the mystery of the Holy Trinity, and how three things, the Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit could be separate entities, yet one in the same.
• The original color associated with St. Patrick is blue, not green as commonly believed.

Beyond learning why or why don’t people volunteer, Assumption Catholic School will look at how we have encouraged volunteerism. We will begin to examine how we all can be involved in the lives of students, while involving students. What an exciting prospect. The Drought Continues Please Conserve WaterThe East Bay Municipal Utility District wishes to remind all East Bay residents and businesses of the ongoing severe drought, and of the need to conserve water. 2014 ends as the third dry year in a row, demanding our continued vigilance. On December 9, 2014 the Board of Directors issued a call for increased customer conservation and directed staff to be ready to deliver more federal water to protect our region from the risk of critical shortages should this historic drought continue in 2015. If supplemental supplies are needed, the cost to pay for them will be collected through a 14% surcharge on the amount of water each customer uses. If the drought deepens, a Stage 3 declaration could occur in mid-2015, triggering more use restrictions, mandatory rationing, and implementation of drought surcharges and enforcement of excessive use penalties.NEWSTuitionLast week the School Board voted and approved a 4.25 % tuition increase. Please see the document attached to this electronic newsletter.DEADLINE - Tuition Assistance/PSAS Application - DEADLINE All families interested in any form of tuition assistance for the 2015-16 school year will need to complete and submit a PSAS application before the March 16th deadline. Stewardship A Christian steward is one who receives God's gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible manner, shares them in justice and love with others, and returns them with increase tithe to the Lord. Sacrifice
Stewardship asks us to put God’s priorities first and to sacrificially give from our “first fruits.” This means that when we make our commitment to give, we do not give from what is left over after we pay our monthly
bills and set aside our extra money. Rather, we give from our first portion right off the
top. We make giving back to God our number one priority.
EQUAL SACRIFICE, NOT EQUAL AMOUNT.Each of us needs to ask ourselves, what is a
sacrificial gift for me? What can I give to ourReclaiming Christ’s Mission Together campaign above and beyond what I currently give here at Church of the
Assumption? Please pray over that question and determine what we can do as a parish family for the future of the Church in the
Diocese of Oakland.

Got Meditation?
Please join us on Sunday, March 22nd at 2:30pm -‐4pm in the Church for an afternoon of Christian meditation. We will be led by Sister Barbara Hazzard on this amazing journey of discovery. Take time out of your hectic life, receive this Lenten gift. It’s like a spa treatment for the soul! Babysitting will be provided and
refreshments will be served.
“Meditation, sitting in silence, is a prayer of faith. You totally let go of being in charge, which is different from what most prayer is about, because as long as we use words, we are in control. Most of us as Christians have been trained that
prayer is talking to God. We feel the responsibility to do something, to be active when we pray, but in meditation, you enter it with the idea that you will let the
Spirit transform you. You don’t talk, you listen.”
– Sister Barbara Hazzard, Roman Catholic.
S. Barbara Hazzard, OSB, entered religious life in 1954 with the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in Oakland, California. In the wake of the ferment following Vatican II, S.
Barbara left her first religious community in the early 1970s to embark on a search for a deeper life of prayer both for herself and those to whom she ministered. This period of searching took a decisive turn when she discovered the work of the late Benedictine Fr. John Main in 1982. Visiting John Main’s experimental urban monastery in Montreal shortly thereafter, S. Barbara found a model of contemplative community that resonated with her own aspirations and the needs she perceived in the wider church. Upon her return to Oakland, she formed the Hesed
Community along similar lines, as an expression of the Benedictine monastic tradition (Hesed is affiliated with Saint Benedict’s Monastery and Saint John’s Abbey, neighboring Benedictine
communities in central Minnesota) committed to the teaching and practice Christian meditation.
Please call the rectory if you will be taking us up on our offer of free babysitting so we can plan accordingly. 510-‐352-‐1537
