Seniors complete new job-shadowing project

Troy Music Department to put on Feast of Carols

by Tanner Weishaar

The seniors were re-sponsible for completing a job-shadowing project. This is a new project the seniors are required to complete this quarter. Each student had to find a person whom they could job-shadow. This person had to be some-one who works in the field in which the stu-dent wishes to pursue a career. Students were not allowed to shadow a relative or someone that works in the Troy area. The advisers, Mrs. Juli Smith, Mr. Darren Ar-ment, and Mrs. Martha-Jean Rockey, wanted this to be an opportunity for

Arment and Mrs. Smith, I decided to require a job-shadowing compo-nent to try to better pre-pare the students for life after high school. This requires that they not only job shadow some-one in a profession they might wish to enter but also research the profes-sion. I personally was distressed last year by the number of seniors in May who were still ‘undecided’ about future plans. We hope this will help them have at least an idea about where they are headed after high school,” said Mrs. Martha-Jean Rockey, senior English teacher.

to Heartland Regional Medical Center where she shadowed the Ra-diology Department. She got to watch many x-rays and other pro-cedures take place. “I really enjoyed learn-ing about all the differ-ent types of radiology that are offered. I felt it was a great experience and made me feel con-fident with my decision to be a radiology tech.” “For the past few years in second-quarter senior English, seniors have written resumes and personal essays, suitable for use for job and col-lege applications. This year, working with Mr.

whom they shadowed. Kelli Marriott shad-owed Sarah Wood at Heartland Regional Medical Center. “I thought my job shad-owing experience was really fun. It was laid back and a fun environ-ment to be in. I learned a lot about the job and I would still like to pur-sue a job in this career.” Jacob Winkel shad-owed John Whetstine at Rawhide Camp. “It was very fun. I really enjoyed being able to do the job shadow so it gave me ideas about po-tential careers. I really liked the job, however. Amanda Clary went

the students to venture out of the small town of Troy and see what is beyond their hometown. Once the students found the person they wished to shadow, they had to set up a time and date they could go visit. The seniors were given a choice if they wanted to shadow their person the whole school day or just a half day. They were responsible for their transportation to and from the work place and also to complete all the necessary paper-work. They had to have papers approved and signed by Mr. Wigger and also by the person

by Ravan Kentzler It’s getting to be that time of year again. The lights are up and the houses are decorated. People are getting all of their Christmas shop-ping done and there is Christmas music play-ing in the stores and on the radio. But if people want to hear some a little bit closer to home, the Troy Middle and High School is put-ting on their annual Feast of Carols concert. The concert will take place Thursday, December 20, in the high school new gym. Before the concert,

there will be a spaghetti dinner. The students in band and choir will be selling tickets before the concert takes place, but tickets are also available at the door. The band and middle/high school choirs have been preparing for this performance since the first few weeks of school. The dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. in the caf-eteria with tickets $10 for adults and $5 for students. The pro-ceeds will benefit the Troy Marching Band as it is raising money to perform in the Walt Disney World Thanks-giving Day Parade of

Bands next school year. The concert will then begin at 7 p.m. with the middle and high school choirs and the band per-

celebrate and listen to Christmas music with family and friends.

The Kayettes are in-volved in many Christ-mas activities. They are collecting food items for families in need to be donated by the group to a local food bank. Kayettes will also be involved in donating for families in need: toys, gloves, hats, etc, which will be given away to families. They deco-rated the school for the holidays. Secret Santa

has become a tradition in Kayettes, drawing names in the group and getting gifts for her. This year the Kay-ettes helped decorate the town gazebo and put up a big Christmas tree with lights and ornaments.

FBLA December 2, Future Business Leaders of America attended the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Carolina Panthers game. Before the game

they tailgated.. They had hot dogs and chips. The members who attended were Trae Shelton, Nathan King, Mackenzie Harbeston, Megan Etherton, Jessica Burton, Bailey Gron-niger, Megan Schmille and Chris Tharman. January 19, FBLA will attend a District 2 Con-ference in Valley Falls. There they will compete against other schools in all areas of business,

such as public speaking, desktop publishing, ac-counting, business math and sports management.

FFA has had a busy year, and the two weeks leading up to Christmas break have been no ex-ception. Recently the FFA Members sold fruit, meat, and dessert items through Seitz to raise money. The officer team took all order forms and not only organized the order, but helped or-ganize the boxes when they came in. There were over 600 boxes! Thursday December 13, Troy FFA Members

went to Marysville to compete in the Winter CDE Days. Thirty-three students left the school at 6:45 a.m to travel there. Students competed in Ag Mechanics, Poultry, and Public Speaking. The Ag Mechanics con-test consisted of weld-ing, electronic compo-nents, and identifying parts of an engine. Troy FFA members swept the competition with the first-place A-Team and B-Team. The re-

sults are as follows for the A-Team: Bodhi An-thony, 2nd; Jake Meng, 5th; and Dalton Mas-ters, 7th. The B-Team was successful as well with Jay Whetstine plac-ing 1st; William Boeh, 2nd; Bailiegh Jenkins, 6th; Cody Israel, 7th; Courtney Klaus, 8th; and Alex Schmille, 10th. The poultry contest consisted of identify-ing parts of a chicken, judging live chickens, candleing eggs, and tak-

ing a written test. Troy had an A-Team that placed 8th overall, and a B-Team that placed 5th overall. Ravan Kentzler, senior, placed 10th on the B-Team. The public speakers gave memorized speech-es to a panel of two judg-es. The events in public speaking were the creed, freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, and ex-temporaneous. Troy had two creed speakers, Tay-lor Scherer and Tabitha Porter. Luke Smith competed as freshman. Kirsten Davies gave a sophomore speech about the water cycle and the importance of water, and secured 10th . Halli Wigger was the oldest to compete from Troy, and spoke in the junior division about the Farm Bill and in the ex-temporaneous division about feeding the grow-ing population. She gained first- and fourth-places respectively.

While the Troy FFA has been having a suc-cessful run, they are also hosting an Ag Breakfast Wednesday, December 19. This breakfast will be for Ag students and faculty. There will be juice, milk, hash browns, sausage, pancakes, and homemade donuts. The FFA Officer Team is also working on a project for younger kids. They are pairing with Mr. Roger Purdy to help host an Agricul-tural Postcard Contest. The idea is to create a postcard that shows Kansas agriculture. The FFA Officers are especially busy at the moment, considering they are also preparing to go to Kansas City in January to represent Troy at an Agricul-tural Conference. Of-ficers will be in official dress to usher attend-ees of the conference. Mr. Darren Arment advises the Troy FFA.

Wreck-it-Ralph, a good lesson for kids by Halli Wigger

bad guys, and insults and negativity roll off them like rain drops. Ralph leaves the meet-ing, but a special idea comes to him while he’s traveling the “power cord.” He overhears a soldier talking about He-ro's Duty, a game that he is in. Ralph hears that if you’re good at the game, you can get a medal. A medal! That was ex-actly what Ralph needed to be a hero. Taking this news, he did what every video game char-acter had been told not

to do… jump games. Ralph sneaks his way into an incredibly ad-vanced combat game featuring the tougher- than-nails soldier, Ser-geant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch). He then continues to try to prove

his bravery by win-ning the before men-tioned medal. With the right intentions though, Ralph accidentally sets free the most dangerous threat the video game world had ever seen Right when you think all hope is over for the movie, Ralph convinc-es the unpredictable cart racer Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) to help set things right. In the end, Ralph does un-leash his inner hero, and shows the video game

Have you ever thought you wanted to be someone else? Or maybe, you have wanted to be different? Well, that was the case for Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) in the animated Pixar film Wreck-it-Ralph. This is easily my fa-vorite film of the year. It incorporated an old-school feel with Atari games, as well as newer games. The movie easily provides nostalgic amusement as the characters trav-el on their “journey” through the games. Even if you are not a video game fanatic, you will still enjoy this movie. It is obviously influenced by another one of my favorites, Toy Story. Ralph has pure motivation and just wants some respect. He feels that ogres never can be loved – he has never seen Shrek. This is the start of his journey. Poor Ralph is nine feet tall, with hands the size of small cars, and weighs over 600 pounds. Frankly, destroying things is his niche. However, he’s tired of being a bad guy. He’s also sick and tired of hearing how great Fix-it-Felix is. Felix has friends! Felix is invited to par-

ties! Best of all, Felix is considered a hero. Ralph does what any bad anon does and goes to his local Bad-Anon meeting. He tries de-scribing his plight to them, but they just don’t get it. They’re

world that you don’t have to be a “bad guy.” I feel that Wreck-it-Ralph’s message can be encouraging to younger children. The gold med-als are awards for kids who see themselves

as strange or an odd-ball, just like Ralph. The movie has a great lesson that teaches friendship, growth, and self-sacrifice.

What was your favorite gift

received from Santa?“Hotwheels,” said sophomore

Jake Ross.

“I got a pink barbie house,” said freshman MaKayla Ross.

“A big toy pink dollhouse,” said junior Harley Huss.

“G.I Joes,” said senior Reece Simpson.

Did you believe in San-ta Claus when you were younger? If not, why didn’t you believe? Did someone ruin the spirit of Christmas for you by giving up the big secret? Some kids and par-ents today think that it’s totally okay to tell little kids that Santa is not real. The parents don’t want to spend the money for extra Santa presents, and the siblings want to ruin it, because they don’t believe anymore. Telling someone that Santa isn’t real ru-ins the whole spirit of Christmas. You see movies with Santa in them, you see Santa at

the mall and up town, and if you know he’s not real, then none of that is fun anymore. As a kid, all you know is Santa, and when you get older or if some-one tells you differ-ent, you’re crushed. Santa means more to little kids than people think. Santa is one of the biggest sym-bols for Christmas. If there’s no Santa, then the holiday just isn’t as fun anymore. When little kids find out Santa isn’t real, their Christ-mas spirit drops. No one wants to find out that there’s no Santa. When I was little, I was

told that Santa wouldn’t come if I weren’t in bed early. Every Christ-mas Eve, I would fall asleep really early, be-cause I was so afraid ofSanta‘s missing my house. Like everyone else, I left him milk and cookies and reindeer food. Also, every year I would write him a let-ter and have him sign it because I thought his signature was the coolest thing ever, kind of like a famous person. I would brag about it at school and rub it in people’s faces. The Christmas I found out that he wasn’t real, it was my fault. No one

told me that he wasn’t real, and no one should tell anyone that he’s not real. I was peaking at my presents in my mom’s room and saw a Kara-oke machine that I had been dying to have all year. On Christmas Eve I opened all my presents from my mom and there was no karaoke machine in sight. On Christmas morning I saw it with all my Santa gifts, and after I put two and two to-gether I knew the truth. Don’t tell anyone that Santa isn’t real. If you don’t believe, then that’s your own fault. Don’t ruin the spirit of Christmas for any-

one; it’s not right and it’s not fair. Remember, “If you don’t believe, then you don’t receive.”

Halli Wigger has been baton twirling for seven years and has competed at numerous competi-tions. She has been the Feature Twirler for the Marching Wyandotte Bears, appeared as a twirler for the March-ing Grizzlies, and was this past year’s Fea-ture Twirler for the

Marching Troy Trojans. Wigger is also in the process of becoming a level one coach rec-ognized and certified by the United States Twirling Association. The Troy Fitness Cen-ter is allowing Halli to teach lessons. If you are interested or have questions, feel

What is your favorite part of Christmas?

“My favorite part of Christmas is getting gifts,” said junior Chase Martin.“My favorite part of

Christmas is spending time with my crazy family and the food!” said sophomore Bailey Gronniger.

“My favorite part of Christmas is getting out of school and getting gifts,” said freshman Dylan Langford.

Rewind seven or eight years, to Christmas Eve. Do you remember the anxious hopes of what Santa would bring? You could barely sleep due to the excitement, and woke up at the crack of dawn to see what good-ies Santa and his elves had left. Maybe you even

left out some treats on the lawn for the reindeer. Unfortunately, many children will be waking up on Christmas without that feeling of excite-ment and anticipation – because they know San-ta might not have come. A whopping number of 1.7 million children

will be spending their Christmas away from their parents and, ac-cording to NEK-CAP, almost 30,000 people meet a low-income threshold and will not be as fortunate this year. There are several or-ganizations you can give to for this Christmas.

For instance you could donate to the NEK-CAP; they service the entire Northeast Kan-sas area. Their website is http://nekcap.org, and they have a cen-tral office in Hiawatha. Another way of giv-ing is the Angel Tree. The Angel Tree is also

geared towards minis-tering to needy fami-lies and those who are from broken homes. In fact, just $12.58 can bring a Christmas gift to two children. You can access the Angel Tree website at http://www.ange l t r ee .o rg .

Juniors, seniors should be preparing for college

Over eating and depression are issues during the holidays by Kirsten Davies

Seniors are becoming excited about their up-coming graduation and starting the next chapter in life. A senior check-list is in order for them to use to make sure they are prepared. With stress piled on, seniors need to make sure they’re ready. to begin this new journey in their lives. Preparing could be extremely overwhelm-ing and stressful, but it is something any senior should be starting to think about at this time. Applying for a col-lege of choice and be-ing accepted, or having a set decision on what you want to do for af-ter graduation, is very important at this time. By December, a senior should begin to

committed to a college and have a decision. Be watching your e-mail and mail for college ac-ceptance letters. If you have been accepted to the college you like, notify other colleges you have applied to and let them know you will not be attending. You should also be aware of important dead-lines (housing, finan-cial aid, deposit, etc.). A junior preparing for college is just as impor-tant this time of year. Keep in mind that col-leges will be looking for a strong GPA, involve-ment in extracurricular activities, and challeng-ing coursework. By De-cember, a junior should have the PSAT score report back, knowing

organize applications and financial aid forms that will be due around the next couple months. January and February are the months when any senior will have to have applications in early. Keeping copies of all forms you submit and getting first semes-ter transcripts sent to schools you apply to are something to consider. Be sure to fill out the FAFSA online quickly as the sooner you com-plete it, the sooner you will have an idea of your financial aid op-tions. This report will arrive four weeks af-ter the FAFSA is filed, so be on the look out! The last couple of months before gradu-ation, you should be

important at this time. During the next few months, the ACT should have been taken by now and you should be vis-iting college whenever possible. Begin prepar-ing essays for college admissions and schol-arship applications. During May and June, it’s a good idea to start a summer job that might relate to your ca-reer interests, while also earning money to save up for college costs. Be aware of the dead-lines and registration for anything important you might need to know. You should continue to be in-terested in a college and receive information reg-ularly during the sum-mer of your junior year.

how well they did. Start planning to take the ACT, if you have not taken it already. Check out the college you are interested in and read about it’s testing re-quirements and what it has to offer. Going on college visits is definite-ly important throughout the year. Make sure to meet with an admis-sions representative and a financial aid counselor to find out what types of aid are available. By January and Feb-ruary, a junior should start investigating pri-vate scholarships and other student aid pro-grams and ask a lo-cal counselor about scholarships available. Registering and study-ing for exams is very

During the holiday season many people break their diet. On an average they gain five to ten pounds. During the holidays people tend to eat more than they would other times of the year. All the Christmas parties and family gatherings makes it a challenge for most people to stay on track. Not all is lost during the holiday season. You can still enjoy the holidays and eat food you love , but portions do matter. The holiday season also has another down-

er: unwelcome guests, stress, and depression. The holidays bring many fun things such as shop-ping, parties, Christmas lights, and decorations. Unfortunatly not every-one gets to experience that happiness dur-ing the holiday season. Some people suf-fer from the holiday blues. Stress can take over one’s life during the holiday season, es-pecially when the in-dividual is focused on buying presents for their loved ones. Stories about parents fighting in

toy stores are well docu-mented, and can defi-nitely increases stress. The holidays are sup-pose to be an exciting time, somehow along the way the stress, unre-alistic expectations, and all the other negative things shows up mak-ing people depressed. In terms of the health effects of stress, people who spend weeks wor-rying about Christmas can suffer a breakdown in their immune system, leaving them susceptible to colds. Coming into contact with more peo-

ple at Christmas exposes people to more infec-tions. Eating fattening foods, taking less excer-sice, and stressful situ-ations between family members can really take its toll on your health. During the holiday seaon don’t let the overeating and stress take over your holiday. Have a good time with your friends and family.

Lady Trojan Basketball underwayby Kelli Marriott The Lady Trojans aren’t off to the start they had hoped for. Their overall record is 2-2. They started their sea-son against the Maur Hill-Mount Academy Raven Tuesday, De-cember 4. The Lady Trojans defeated the Ravens 51-33. Alanie Stock led the team in scoring with 13 points, Alex Winder and Kelli Marriott each had 8. Friday, December 7, the Lady Trojans didn’t show up to play as they were defeated by the Do-niphan West Mustangs 25-47. Paige Fenley led the team in scoring with 7 points, and Mar-

riott followed with 6. Saturday, December 8, the Lady Trojans played the Riverside Cyclones. The Lady Trojans gained a pretty big lead in the third quarter but didn’t finish the game. They were defeated 40-46. Fenley led the team in scoring with 15 points. Tuesday, December 11, the Lady Trojans trav-eled to Maur Hill-Mount Academy. The Lady Trojans started their reg-ular season off well as they defeated the Ravens 49-17. Marriott led the team in scoring with 9 points; Stock and Wind-er followed with 8 each.
