General Meeting May 18, 2015
7 PM POTLUCK
Trollheim welcomes Cary Stevens from the District Attorney’s Office in Jeffco to speak on the topic of Crime Prevention, including ID theft, scams and Fraud prevention. These days with credit card, cell phones and computers, scams of all sorts abound! It’s good for all of us to be enlightened to new ways to keep our personal stuff safe.
Come enjoy the potuck dinner and stay for the presentation!
.
From the President
Spring has finally arrived in Denver. Our lilac bushes are full of fragrant blossoms. the crab apple trees are sharing their lovely pink buds, and next will be our Martha Washington peonies. Spring is such a grand reminder of nature’s renewal.
The high Country Chorus performance at the lodge on Tuesday, April 7 th was fantastic! The ladies sang with harmonious spirit and enthusiasm. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance, and the smiles that were shared as everyone was leaving the lodge were priceless. For those of you that missed this event, you missed an opportunity to hear beautiful music, share some Gilligan’s Island humor, meet new friends, and enjoy refreshments, all complimentary.
May is a month of celebrations…Mother’s Day, Syttende Mai (the 17th of May, Norwegian Constitution Day), and Memorial Day. Our lodge has planned a smorgasbord event for May 17th that you won’t want to miss. Please refer to the Trollheim Lodge newsletter for all the details.
Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota have Syttende Mai celebrations of Norwegian national pride that I am personally familiar with. I lived in Menomonie, Wisconsin and knew of the Stoughton event. Tens of thousands come every year, which likely has the largest celebration in the world, including Norway (according to the Chamber of Commerce). They embrace the Norwegian culture; baked items, and lutefisk for everyone to enjoy. No corn dogs sold here! Decorah, Iowa, home of the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum, celebrates more traditionally with a children’s parade, food, dancers, and tours through the museum. Spring Grove, Minnesota has food, music, dancing, a parade and the national lutefisk-eating contest. Today, North Sea Oil has brought Norway the world’s highest standard of living--which is to say the Norwegians have such a huge selection of cuisines available to them, that lutefisk is perhaps not at the top of their desired food lists anymore.
We are very fortunate to have another scholarship available to help students who wish to attend Oslo’s International Summer School. It is called the Warne-Eng Scholarship. The name Doug Warne may sound familiar to many of you as he is the voice of the “Scandinavian Hour” which he has hosted for 55 years. Mr. Warne lives in Seattle, and is a current member of The Board of Governors of the Sons of Norway Foundation. For more information about this and all the other scholarships available, simply Email Sons of Norway at [email protected] (Norwegian American Weekly).
I look forward to seeing you at our monthly meetings and special events. Have an idea for a monthly program for our lodge? Please let me know…I welcome your participation. Fraternally, John Neverdahl, President

Jerry Peterson was hit by a car recently. After a couple nights in the hospital, he was released to recuperate at home. He will need some physical therapy for a while, according to his daughter, Sue. Cards of well-wishes would be appreciated.

Nordic Protector Popular New Offering
Nordic Protector life insurance can provide the money needed to pay for final expenses, which can be costly. A large percentage of Americans are either not prepared to take on the financial responsibilities associated with a funeral or have no idea of what a funeral costs. Typically, a funeral and associated fees cost about $11,000 on average.
The Nordic Protector is a simple life insurance product designed to provide the money needed to cover expenses like funeral costs, medical bills, legal, and probate fees, and other end of life expenses. Another appealing use of this product is to leave a legacy. By owning life insurance, you can name a family member as a beneficiary to receive the tax-free benefits at death. Or, you can buy life insurance and name your favorite charity or foundation as beneficiary or designate that you money go to a special cause.
Finally, the Nordic Protector can be used to insure children and grandchildren. The policy provides cash value growth that the grandchild can use as he or she gets older, plus it provides a basic insurance foundation for life and the good thing is, there are no more premiums.
With Nordic Protector, you make one guaranteed single premium payment and your policy is paid up. There is no medical exam, only simple Yes/No questions. Issue ages are from 0 to 85. Available coverage is from $5,000 to $50,000. Dividends can increase the death benefit to help fight inflation or they may be taken in cash.

April 20th General Meeting Notes
Evan Anderson At our recent General Meeting, we heard from a young High School Student who gave us a presentation of his great-great-grandfather, Gunder Anderson. Evan Anderson compiled a lot of history about his gg-grandfather, from a variety of sources and put it together in an interesting Power-point presentation. (Evan holding his g-g-grandfather’s uniform while posing with his father, Bryan Alvin Anderson))
Gunder Anderson was an immigrant from Norway who arrived in the US in the early 1900’s. He was called to serve in WWI. Evan offered the viewer not only the particulars about his g-g-grandfather, but also information about the technology that was new during WWI and the consequences of that technology. Gunder’s story, as told by his g-g-grandson, gave us a small view of the Spanish Influenza, chemical warfare (gas), more modern weapons, military movements, and medical treatments of the day. Evan’s research also extended to fellow immigrants who traveled to the US with Gunder, and fellow servicemen. It was a very interesting presentation with the uniform that Gunder wore and Gunder’s medals giving a nice, tactile element to the presentation.
Evan is working towards People to People Ambassador Programs, a program that promotes global awareness through travel and education. We wish him well. Tusen takk, Evan!
High Country Chorus Dress Rehearsal
Did you miss the FREE Dress Rehearsal concert by the High Country Chorus on April 7th? It was great fun. The group performed their main show, a skit with a nod to TV’s Gilligan’s Island. With songs and story, the parody was “spot-on, luvee”, and had the audience in laughter. The harmonies of the songs were wonderful to hear, too.
Also performing were several quartets. One did a parody of the Modern Classic Woman, with “Rachel” Simmons, decked out in the wild wig, shorts, and sequins who encouraged the other 3 ladies to seek the fine points of keeping fit. A male quartet, Fast Lane gave the audience several tunes from the 1960’s in rich Barbershop Quartet harmony including “Happy Together”, one of my faves.
The main hall was filled with singers and their families and friends and a few (very few) Trollheim members, and we all laughed at the comedy and marveled at the harmonies. Our main hall has wonderful acoustics for concerts. It was a great night! Wish you were there! ----Editor

Varen Te’-Spring Tea April 18th, 2015
What does it take to present an “Elegant Tea”? Here are some of the facts.
Many Hostesses, Helpers, and Tea Brewers to complete the task; many meetings to plan and coordinate the menu, theme, date, price, and advertising; setting tables; arranging for door prizes, and other decisions. The utmost item that makes this event possible each year is our Trollhiem Lodge building. It provides a venue for the Dameklub with a dining room and kitchen for holding this annual Tea. We thank Sons of Norway Trollheim Lodge for this great facility.
We served one-hundred thirty six guests, seated at seventeen elegantly-dressed tables, with each hostess’s best china and silver. Each table was different with centerpieces of real floral decor, linen tablecloths and a smiling host present to serve the guests. The guests played their part; many were attired in their Sunday best, with some in hats from the 40’s.
Hosts that chose to do baking plus host a table are, Barb Hessel, Ruth Huebner, Nina Ehlers, Bev King, Marty Dahl, Louise Bath, Barb Bessesen, Andree Vetter, Ruth Peterson, and Ione Norby. Hosts that hosted a table plus acted as worker-bees in the kitchen were Bernice and Diane Molter, Jacque and Jim Bland, Barb Stover, Judy Lee Paez. Connie Bartram.
For entertainment, Jackie (“Lena”) Groe, played “Lena, wife of Ole,” with a dialect so thick that one had to retain himself from continuous laughter. “Lena” caught the attention of the guests this year when she came to the podium in her new “bunad” It was an anniversary gift from her Ole, and consisted of red long-handled underwear, strappings on her legs, horn on her head and a Viking Axe. Thank you, Lena for your gift of comedy! Thank you to Louise Bath, and Nina Ehlers, for displaying their rosemaling which was outstanding. Louise presented a short on the history of rosemaling to the guests, also. Thanks also extend to Barb Bessesen, for the heritage table, and to Diane Molter, and Marty Dahl, for their display of bunads.
Let us not forget the Tea Brewers, Billy Hessel, Chris Wattier and daughter Lily. Larry Huff, neighbor of Ruth Huebner, donated the salmon and labor, and Desirée Hessel, was an overall helper. A special thank you goes to Connie Bartram for her energy and organizational expertise.
Yes, the Tea was a success! --- Bev King

Why Seniors still need newspapers:
I was visiting my daughter last night
when I asked if I could borrow a
newspaper.
"This is the 21st century," she said.
"We don't waste money on
newspapers. Here, use my iPad"
I can tell you this. That fly never
