A Failure to CommunicateI came across a intriguing statistic recently that I’d like to share with you. According to industry sources, the 2008 film The Dark Knightcost $185 million to make, and the film’s producers spent $150 mil-lion—almost as much as the production cost—to market it.

So what does all this have to do with Scouting? Simply this: TheDark Knight’s producers knew they had a great film on their hands, but they knew the general public didn’t know that. They realized itdidn’t matter how good the film was if people didn’t hear about it and feel motivated to see it.

More than 3,000 Boy Scouts turned out for this year's event, the largest gath-ering of Scouts in the Connecticut Yankee Council’s history. The event was open to the public Saturday with more than 110 activities planned for youth

of all ages. Outside organizationsset up displays and activities. Inaddition, area Boy Scout troopshosted demonstrations on Scoutingskills such as knot-tying, ropebridges and a rocket launch. Aclimbing wall, reptile show, dem-onstrations from public agenciesand the military, as well as outsidevendors were also available.

Overall, ConnJam was fun. There were a lotof people and too many activities to count, including paintball and blacksmiths. Theshow at the end of the day was also fun. Itconsisted of three bands and two other per-formances. To wrap it all up, there wereamazing fireworks at the end. It was inter-esting and I would definitely do it again.

ConnJam was fun. There was lots of good foodand fun activities during the day. There were scoutmuseums that had the history of scouting into thepresent day and a big show at the end of the day.ConnJam was a lot of fun and educational also.

This year’s Invitational to Martha’s Vineyard couldn’t have been any better. With beaches, biking, shopping (for some) and much more, the Scouts of Troop 9 had a great time. Though the drive was long, it was worth it.

On the morning of our ferry ride to Martha’s Vineyard, it seemed that it would be a dreary day but right as we got off the ferry the sky cleared up. After the boys and adults got their bikes, we separated into our groups and dis-persed to different locations on the island. We biked all day and when we got to the Hostel we had hamburgers, hot-dogs, and lobster for dinner. After dinner, most of the boys played Ultimate Frisbee with the adults watching. There were a few adults who joined in such as Mr. Busby and Mr. Huntoon.

The next day after a good breakfast of pancakes and oatmeal we started biking again. There were a few accidentsthroughout the trip, but Matt A.’s was the worst. Luckily, it wasn’t that bad and he and his dad were able to make the ferry ride home. Unfortunately, all the fun had to come to an end when we had to leave Martha’s Vineyard but we will all remember it as one of the best trips of the year.

"We biked a 2-1/2 mileprivate dirt road that wasextremely bumpy until weended up on a scenic routeto the beach. Once at thebeach we messed aroundby the water and tried tosee who could get closestto the water without itsplashing back at you andgetting you wet. I ended upgetting my shoes soaked!Overall, it was worth theride."

“This years Invitational was definitely awesome, but I think one of the best parts of it was the beach. My group biked there Saturdayafternoon. First we just had fun in the water where the waves weresurprisingly big. Then we got out the football and everyone in ourgroup played. We were all sad when we had to leave the beach. I'msure if any one of us had the choice we would have stayed muchlonger.”

As we left on our summer excursion, we took it slow, to enjoy the New England scenery.A quick ride up the coast brought us to our exclusive waterfront accommodations. The amenities, too numerous to mention, were excellent, as always. At night, rhythmic sounds gently comforted us as we drifted off to sleep.

On Saturday morning we were greeted by the aroma of the chef's exquisitely prepared pastries. The coffee obviously of the finest beans. The orange juice - freshly squeezed.

We strolled to the point of departure, excitement building with each step.

A breezy, carefree cruise reminded us of previous sailing trips to the continent. The crew's attentivenesswas unmatched. The Captain was stoic. The Purser, jaunty. We were welcomed ashore by friendly faces, those eager to see us.Once on our favorite island, we opted for a self-guided tour on our vehicle of choice - the bicycle. How better to explore. We paused at the beauty of a sea shell, the wonderment of the shifting sands.

A nesting pair of sandhill cranes were the perfect back-drop to the sun glistening off the water.

The day of robust exercise was invigorating. A reward of lobsters and all its accoutrements awaited us.The cozy little bed & breakfast tended to all our needs. The dining facilities were first-class.

After dining we relaxed with quiet lawn games, challenging chess matches and compliments to ourselves. At night, we were pampered in our bedding chambers.

Sunday morning we awoke to a hearty breakfast of fluffy pancakes, dripping with warm syrup. But it was the chatter of a new day that roused us.A few more sights to see. The alpaca farm, perhaps. No, let's save that for another time.

One member of our party, much too melancholy about the return to the mainland, chose one more special tripto the other side of the island. A new adventure?

And then it was over. We shouldn't be sad, another trip we'll plan…
