Cairns Cityin the tropical northCairns City is the heart of Tropical
North Queensland and the gateway to
Northern Australia. This modern city
is an ideal base to explore the wider
tropical region with front-door access
to the World Heritage listed Reef and
Rainforest.
The Cairns CBD is a truly tropical
precinct in which to enjoy a spot of
shopping at the many boutiques or al
fresco dining. Be inspired by a cultural
experience at one of the many galleries
the region offers or choose from one
of the 600-plus tour options available each and every day.
For those who need to soak up the sun you can do so at the picturesque Lagoon, the centrepiece of the city. Surrounded by sandy beaches, its 4,800 square metres of crystal clear waters keep an ambient temperature year-round.
Surrounding the Lagoon is parklands with tropical gardens and wide vistas that link to both the CBD and the Cairns Esplanade.

The Esplanade is a perfect spot for bird watching, walking, biking or simply enjoying a picnic. Almost two kilometres of landscaped parkland fringes a busy thoroughfare and restaurant strip on one side and a natural harbour inlet on the other. Each year, thousands of visitors flock to the Esplanade to relax on the grass, dine at sidewalk cafes and watch the many bird species which come to feed on the tidal zone.
Fogarty Park, at the Spence Street end of the Esplanade, features an outdoor performance space, which is the focal point for many city celebrations. Across the road is the Reef Fleet Terminal, the common departure point for passengers travelling to the Great Barrier Reef.

As Australia’s closest and easiest access point to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns offers visitors the ability to immerse themselves in this marine wonderland. Almost 1,000 islands dot the coastline of the Great Barrier Reef, and some of the most beautiful and accessible are located in Tropical North Queensland. There are 2,900 individual reefs in an area of 348,000 square kilometres. Visitors can experience the reef in a number of ways. The most popular is by fast catamaran where passengers are taken to their reef destination in air-conditioned comfort on high-technology crafts designed to protect the environment.
For others, experiencing the wind in their face
on board a sailing ship is the preferred option.
There are also extended cruises to islands and
reefs along the coast, as well as helicopters and
scenic plane flights. South of Cairns are the idyllic
Frankland Islands. This group of five islands
are protected as National Parks and accessible
to visitors on a day boat cruise from Cairns.
The other World Heritage listed area that should be
at the top of your list is the rainforest, extending
from the world-famous Daintree and Cape
Tribulation areas north of Port Douglas to an

scenic mountains surrounding Cairns City.
The rainforest can be enjoyed by a guided walk
on raised boardwalks which protect the delicate
forest ecosystem. It can also be viewed from a
cableway gondola, hiked through on an approved
trekking tour, or observed from a luxury four-
wheel-drive.
Visitors to Cairns will never be short of excitement
from lazy island days to adrenalin-packed tours
which spill and thrill.
Cairns Aquarium is an exciting, new indoor
attraction located in the heart of Cairns. Here,
guests of all ages will have guaranteed interaction
with the spectacular beauty and grandeur of over
15,000 fish and aquatic animals from the Great
Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics - without the need
to get wet or even leave the city.
Travel through nine amazing ecosystems from
the world’s most ancient rainforest, to the world’s
largest coral reef to discover 70 different exhibits
showcasing the extremely rare and incredibly
unique species of this region.

Green Island is a beautiful coral cay on Australia’s
Great Barrier Reef where you can spend your days
snorkeling, diving and swimming in the warm island
waters. View the spectacular reef from a semi-
submarine or glass-bottom-boat, explore the island or
just relax on the white sandy beach. A range of activities
are on offer at Green Island including diving, helmet
diving, rainforest walks or the Marineland Melanesia
Nautical Museum.
Fitzroy Island Picture yourself on a beach lined with
coconut trees and sloping gently into the calm, clear
Coral Sea; this is Fitzroy Island. Located 29 kilometres
off the coast of Cairns, just 45 minutes by boat, is
Fitzroy Island, a tropical paradise of rainforest and coral
beaches. The large tropical island and listed National
Park, offers different types of accommodation, ranging
from a 4.5 star resort, to camping grounds.
Boats depart from Cairns three times daily. Alternatively,
you can get a bird’s eye view and experience the reef
from the air by joining a helicopter or seaplane flight.
A sheltered passage from Cairns and secure moorings
make Fitzroy Island an ideal destination for day trips on
your own boat or yacht.

Fitzroy Island is surrounded by a reef system that
forms part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park,
making it the perfect base for snorkeling and
exploring the reef. Make friends with the sea life,
including clown fish, turtles and even whales.
Explore the bush walking tracks throughout the
island, like the Lighthouse and Summit walks, with
views all the way to the Great Barrier Reef. Fitzroy
Island was converted into a military base during
World War War II and most of the walking trails
across the Island were formed during this time,
hence their access to some of the best vantage
points and stunning views in the region. Trek to
magic spots like Secret Garden and Nudey Beach
– listed second on Brad Farmer’s list of Australia’s
101 Best Beaches for 2017. Just remember it is
Nudey by name not by nature!
Also located on Fitzroy Island is the Turtle
Rehabilitation Centre. Make sure you catch one of
the Educational Tours beginning at 1pm every day,
except Friday. The Centre has raised the success
rate for the rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles
from 30% to 85%, and now has one of the highest
success rates in Australia.
At Fitzroy Island, it’s all about rainforest, beaches
and nature-based walks.

Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival
The Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival is three days of fun, fashion, glamour, food and entertainment built around two days of horse racing in Cairns in early September each year.
What began as a small amateur meeting in 1959, designed to bring city and country together, has expanded over the years to become one of Australia’s premier spring horse racing carnivals.
The Carnival is complemented by a host of social activities, some formal and some very informal including a number of corporate functions as well as events and areas for the general public on both race days.
The beautiful mild September climate entices large crowds of locals as well as interstate visitors. The race meeting prize money draws interest from across Queensland and attracts large race fields each year from both new and returning participants.
The social events are the premier functions held in Cairns each year and see locals mixing with Governors, Premiers mixing with celebrities and business leaders mixing with fashionistas.

With the iconic Smithfield Mountain Bike Park and a vast network of suburban cycling paths just minutes from Cairns, there is plenty to explore by bike if you’re staying in the city.
Ride along the Cairns Esplanade for a dose of people-watching or head to Palm Cove for a coffee or cocktail by the beach. After your ride, cuddle some koalas and zipline over crocodiles right in the middle of the city at Cairns Zoom or head to Fitzroy Island for a half-day trip to the Great Barrier Reef.
For those wanting to venture further afield, the Atherton Tablelands are home to the famous Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park and boast several bike-friendly accommodation options. Taste your way around the Tablelands, known as the food bowl of the region, by riding the many food and coffee trails, or cool off after your
journey at one of the many waterfalls and volcanic crater lakes dotting the hinterland.
In Port Douglas, an hour north of Cairns, tackle the historic Bump Track for an exhilarating ride through rainforest and eucalypt forest with stunning views of Big Mowbray Falls. Enjoy the laidback lifestyle of this village by the sea with a local craft beer at Hemingway’s Brewery or a bite to eat at one of the trendy cafes along Macrossan Street.
Make your way to the Cassowary Coast, two hours south of Cairns, and ride the easy 14 kilometres of flat sand at Mission Beach with uninterrupted views of Dunk Island and the Coral Sea. Stop for a picnic at Bingil Bay, or check out Wooroonooran National Park for mountain bike rides of varying distances. Once off your bike, explore the historic ruins at Paronella Park or swim in the awe-inspiring blue spa pools in Cardwell.
With nature the star of the show in Tropical North Queensland and the twin World Heritage areas of the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics Rainforest right on your doorstep, exploring the region on and off your bike is sure to leave you with memories of a lifetime!

A limited number of permits have been issued to
operators, and the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs off Port
Douglas are the only place in the world where people
are permitted to swim with the Minke Whales.
The Whales are very curious and friendly and will
approach boats and swimmers. Once the whales
have been spotted, a floating line is put in the water
for swimmers to hang on to and wait for the whales
to approach.
Passengers are regularly treated to sightings, with the
whales putting on a show by breaching, tail waving
and slapping the water with their pectoral fins.

Wildlife The Wet Tropics Rainforest region is home to over 3,000 plant species, one third of Australia’s mammal species, numerous spectacular insects, a quarter of Australia’s frogs, nearly half of Australia’s bird species and over a third of the country’s freshwater fish.
A number of wildlife sanctuaries operate in the region, where you can see Tropical North Queensland species such as Crocodiles, Cassowaries, Tree-Kangaroos, colourful Parrots and Pythons up close.
The sanctuaries and wildlife parks provide an opportunity to learn about the animals and interact
with baby crocodiles and snakes safely. Many other native Australian animals including Koalas, Kangaroos and Wallabies are popular residents in the sanctuaries and are usually as interested in you, as you are in them.
Once you have observed the animals closely you will be more likely to spot them in the wild. Look closely at a piece of bark and it may be a Boyd’s Forest Dragon which is a master of camouflage. Many species of Skinks can be found scurrying around the leaf litter or a scrub Python may be spied sun-baking in the tree tops.

Over 500,000 visitors make the trip to Mossman Gorge every year and receive a warm and friendly welcome from the local Kuku Yalanji people.
The Kuku Yalanji are the Indigenous inhabitants of the land and have a history dating back 50,000 years, to the earliest human occupation of Australia. Daintree & Cape Tribulationwhere rainforest meets the reefThe Daintree combines breathtaking beauty with exceptional biodiversity and offers a unique holiday destination. Here the Daintree Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef, the only place on earth where two World Heritage listed National Parks exist side by side. Nature’s masterpiece of reef and beaches, mangroves, creeks and rivers, extraordinary wildlife, and the world’s oldest tropical rainforest.
The Daintree encompasses two distinct areas - Daintree Village to the south, set inland on the banks of the Daintree River, and the Daintree Coast to the north, which begins at the picturesque Daintree River Ferry and winds through rainforest to Cape Tribulation.
Winding for 140 kilometres, the Daintree River is one of the longest rivers on Australia’s east coast, providing diverse habitats for many species. Your adventure into this ancient world begins at the river,
considered one of the best birdwatching sites in the country. The best way to see the amazing river ecosystems and wildlife is to take a cruise where you can spot Australia’s largest reptile, the Saltwater Crocodile.
Although it’s possible to visit the Daintree in a day, you will want to spend much longer once you cross the river into this wonderland, so it’s best to plan ahead and book one of the unique accommodation options.
North from the Daintree River, the sealed road meanders over the lush rainforest covered Alexandra Range, through the communities of Cow Bay, Cooper Creek and on to Cape Tribulation.
The drive from the river to Cape Trib, as locals call it, takes around 45 minutes.
Daintree Village is around 45 minutes from Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation is approximately 1 hour 30 mins from Port Douglas.

Discover a small pocket of tropical rainforest that is older than the dinosaurs. The mountains near Cairns and Mossman Gorge are about 70,000 years old, the Amazon is about 55 million years old, but the Daintree Rainforest is thought to be more than 135 million years old.
Apart from being the oldest intact rainforest in the world, these wet tropics are noted for their biological diversity. It is home to more than 51 species of frogs, the highest insect diversity in Australia and 65 per cent of the country’s bat and butterfly species. This area is regarded as one of the finest bird-watching areas in Australia and boasts more than half of the continent’s bird species including the endangered Cassowary. The Daintree has lots to offer, you can go bird watching or crocodile spotting, discover secluded

Forged from the spirits of gold rush pioneers,
cedar timber cutters and farmers, today Daintree
Village is a quaint rural village, hosting travellers
from Australia and all parts of the world.
Daintree Village was originally settled in the 1870s
and is now an uncrowded, picturesque township,
where tourism activities are designed to showcase
the abundant wildlife.
Daintree Village is located on the southern bank
of the Daintree River and is the halfway point
between Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation which
makes it a convenient base from which to explore
the whole region.
Daintree Rainforest – A World Heritage Icon
Daintree Village is renowned as one of Australia’s premium birdwatching locations. There are expert local tour guides (wildlife, flora and photographic) for both land based and river tours.

The village itself has a general store, information and booking office, artist’s studio, timber gallery, cafés and the Daintree Village Hotel.
The Village has a wide choice of accommodation with high-quality B&Bs, budget cabins and a camping and caravan park. There is also luxury, secluded holiday homes tucked away in the valleys as well as an eco-lodge and spa.
The best way of seeing and understanding the river’s ecosystem and wildlife is to take one of the many cruises on offer. The Daintree River is the
habitat of the estuarine or saltwater crocodile, seen regularly on cruises. Croc-spotting and wildlife river tours leave from the Daintree village jetty and run throughout the day. Tours are conducted in the conservation zone of the river, which means feeding the crocodiles is not allowed. There is nothing more exciting than seeing these wonderful animals in the wild.
This region is regarded as one of the finest birdwatching areas in Australia with more than half of the continent’s bird species recorded here. An

Some 14 kilometres of spacious sandy beach links Mission Beach, South Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach, and Bingil Bay. The wide spacious beach is perfect for sharing a sunrise, taking a walk, having a swim or trying your luck at a spot of fishing.
For more challenging inclines, popular walking tracks include Bicton Hill, Licuala Fan Palm Walk, Edmund Kennedy walking track, Lacey’s Creek, Musgrave Track and several trails on Dunk Island.
Only a 10 minute water-taxi from Mission Beach is the mainland home of the spectacular Family Islands National Park which includes the world-renowned Bedarra and Dunk Islands.
Adventures are part of the landscape here with a range of heart-pumping adventures including, blo-karting, kite surfing, mountain biking, kayaking, reef fishing, and white water rafting. Mission Beach is also one of the few places in the world where you can skydive onto the beach.
Continuing on the Highway South of Tully is Cardwell, the first port established north of Bowen over 150 years ago.
Cardwell offers a range of attractions, site seeing, annual events to enjoy and historical places to visit. Cardwell’s Port Hinchinbrook provides a state-of-the-art Marina, public boat ramp and repairs and maintenance facilities for anglers and boaties.
Fishing is a must do and Cardwell is the place to do it. There are plenty of variety and species found amongst mangrove fringed creeks and rivers, off-shore islands and channels, off the jetty or on the Great Barrier Reef.
Cardwell boasts the majestic Hinchinbrook Island which sits just off-shore. It is Australia’s largest Island National Park where you can take on the 32 kilometre, four-day adventure hike called the Thorsborne Trail.
Directly opposite the southern tip of World Heritage listed Hinchinbrook Island is the sleepy seaside town of Lucinda. The pride of Lucinda is a six-kilometre jetty stretching far out into the Coral Sea. The jetty is the world’s largest bulk sugar-loading facility and is so long it actually curves with the earth. When conditions are right, you can sometimes see the dugongs and sea turtles at play.
Coast through the 350 kilometres between Cairns and Townsville to experience this absolutely unique part of Tropical North Queensland.

Cobbold Gorge Tour
The Gulflander
Cobbold Gorge Infinity Edge Pool
Climbing the Great Dividing Range is a metaphor to ascending the plateau of peace that awaits travellers in the timeless wonderland of the Gulf Savannah.
This remarkable region covers 186,000 square kilometres inland from the Great Dividing Range across to the Northern Territory border. To get there, take the Savannah Way; the great top road linking Cairns with the far western areas of the Gulf through Georgetown, Croydon, Normanton and Karumba.
To native Australians, the Gulf Savannah’s secrets and riches have been a boon for thousands of years. Special Aboriginal sites dot the plains and gorges, with fascinating legends and ancient artworks accessible to visitors with an interest in the Dreamtime.
Much of the history of the Gulf lies in the huge goldrush of the late 1800s that opened the land to European settlement. Mining towns with living history and preserved relics of the golden days offer excellent modern day adventures and it is possible to follow in the paths of pioneers and fossick for precious gems and gold even today.
The Riversleigh Fossil Fields, a World Heritage listed site, is a spectacular experience for visitors of all ages. Travellers will find this region richly rewarding, discovering the quiet beauty and dignity of frontier towns like Croydon and Chillagoe. Local characters are as colourful as an outback sunset. Visit the special assets in the Gulf including Mt Surprise and the breathtakingly beautiful Cobbold Gorge.
Cobbold Gorge, 90kms from Georgetown, is a spectacular formation. Deep gorges with permanent spring fed waterholes flanked by sheer cliffs have formed an oasis for wildlife, including fresh water crocodiles. The gorge is situated on family owned, working cattle
property and access is only by way of guided
tours. Activities include gorge tours, scenic
helicopter flights, bush walking, birdwatching,
agate fossicking and swimming. A range of
accommodation and camping options to suit, with
fully licensed bar and restaurant.
Travelling in the Gulf also has a unique dimension
with the superbly restored Gulflander and
Savannahlander trains which evoke the style
and romance of yesteryear as they push placidly
across the salt plains. Two ribbons weave their way
through the Gulf landscape; the Savannah Way
running east west and the Matilda Highway going
north south. People tend to think the roads of the
Gulf are for the seasoned adventurer rather than
the ordinary traveller, but this is no longer the case.
Four wheel drives, motorhomes, caravans and the
family car all travel well on the highways of the
Gulf Savannah.
The best time to rediscover the legendary Australia
in the outback of the Gulf Savannah is from April
to November. The ‘last frontier’ is waiting, and it’s
more accessible than you imagine.
