A question I get asked at least once a month (usually more) is, should I lease my next truck or should I own?

Today the answer is al-most universal. If you can own, own! Leasing should be the last resort.

Prior to 2000/2001 the answer may have been less concrete. In fact, if someone analyzed the leases prior to 2000, the terms were basically the same as owning; some-times the operator could even walk away from a lease with minimal penal-ty (something not readily available today).

As discussed in my first book, lease/ownership tax differences are virtually non-existent. First of all, taxes are NEVER the reason to upgrade equipment any-way (fuel and maintenance should be everything). No-body saves/loses taxes by deciding to buy/lease. The only thing that happens is deferring of taxes or not de-ferring of taxes.

Ultimately, the only real considerations before 2000 were the interest rates.

If you ask any old tim-ers about the 2000 reces-sion they will tell you the impact it had on truck-ing. There were literally farmer’s fields filled with repossessed trucks. Fi-nancing companies lost millions and some were so weak they had to be consolidated. The financ-ing industry was in bad shape.

Executives were forced to do something about the losses. They had to make money, secure money, and as fast as they could. They started to use more aggressive leasing plans.

Executives also real-ized a certain percentage of all leases were never paid out to the end of the term. For instance, trucks were traded off in the third year rather than the operator making all 48 payments. The new leas-es included the “interest”

to the final 48th payment (it’s never called inter-est in the leases). This means that the operator was forced to pay all 48 payments even though he bought it out (traded it in) some time before the end. They also started leas-ing trucks over five years rather than the standard four (allowing more “in-terest” to be paid). The different lease formats are all about probabilities and obligations.

This change in terms created a windfall for fi-nancing companies but a much higher risk for op-erators. Leases were pro-moted over ownership to take advantage of these small but critical terms. Once the losses were cov-ered, however, the wind-fall benefits to profit be-came as standard as the market could handle.

Several years ago I had a client (husband and wife team) who wanted to own their own. They found a truck and started negoti-ating. Even though they put $30,000 down on the truck the dealership told them they did not qualify for owning, so they had to lease. Their payments were $3400 per month for

48 months with a small buyout figure at the end. They signed the lease and started driving.

Unfortunately, some-one hit their truck and totaled it six months into the lease. The insurance provider negotiated with the owner (financing com-pany) and came up with a settlement figure (without input from my client). The insurance provider paid the value to the Leasing company, who then called my client for the bal-ance… $12,000 (negoti-ated down to $10,000). So let’s do the math: $30,000 + (6 X $3400) + $10,000 = $60,400… or $10,066 per month rent!

The reason they lost so much money was because the lease forced them to pay the “interest” for the entire 48 months (not just 6 months as a bank/lend-er would). This added on an additional $22,000.

Since the client was not listed as the owner the insurance provider had no obligation to negoti-ate with them. My client was helpless. This loss of control may sometimes be eliminated providing the carrier forces the in-surance provider to ne-

gotiate with the operator (certainly not a universal position in the industry, since many Carriers self-insure).

The client had 20% down and they had large payments. There was no reason they could not own. It was pushed on them using the argument that there was no differ-ence between owning and leasing, and/or it was bet-ter for taxes. In my opin-ion, this was a lie.

This example exposed a problem in the industry that leasing company ex-ecutives needed to solve. Operators were carrying super high risk. In re-sponse, leasing compa-nies can request or even demand top up insurance. In effect “top up” is an in-

surance policy paid by the operator yet payable to the leasing company in the event something happens while the entire contract is “under water”, “upside down” or in “negative eq-uity”.

If you’ve been asked to buy top up insurance for your lease, you bet-ter know you started your business venture upside down and the homeless guy on the street will be worth more than your business is for a few more years yet.

Why would anyone get into a business that starts off at negative and has such a significant possi-bility for failure? It’s usu-ally because operators are making choices based on

Mack Trucks recently launched Mack Fleet Man-agement Services, its suite of software and technol-ogy offerings that, initially through Telogis, enhance operational performance for customers, reduce costs and increase safety.

Built on the Mack GuardDog Connect telematics solution plat-form, Mack Fleet Manage-ment Services is available on Mack Pinnacle, Granite and Titan by Mack models. Factory-installed hardware provides detailed vehicle information, including fleet and compliance manage-ment data, and eliminates the need for aftermarket hardware purchases and installation costs. Mack’s first collaboration is with Telogis, a leading provider of cloud-based intelligence software. Mack will offer three packages – Telogis Compliance and Naviga-tion, Telogis Fleet and a bundled package of the two. Mack Fleet Manage-ment Services will also of-fer the flexibility to work with multiple partners.

“Mack Fleet Manage-ment Services offer cus-tomers tools to effectively and efficiently manage their operations, improving their total cost of owner-ship,” said Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks North American Sales & Marketing. “Integrating technology and services facilitates customer choice and offers them the best return on investment. We are pleased to be working with Telogis out of the gate in providing these types of services.”

Telogis utilizes propri-etary Mack data, including driver and vehicle perfor-mance history, for the ini-tial Mack Fleet Manage-ment Services offer.

Telogis Compliance and Navigation enable drivers to better manage and meet hours-of-service require-ments and complete Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports. Telogis Navigation also de-livers dynamically updated road conditions collected from an existing commu-nity of more than 140,000 commercial drivers in North America, enabling Mack customers to avoid poten-tial delays and helping to increase on-time deliveries.

Telogis Fleet is a com-prehensive, scalable fleet management solution that can be activated over the air. Combined with Mack proprietary data, it provides real-time visibil-ity into vehicle and driver performance. With Telogis Fleet, customers can view critical information for all the trucks in their fleets on one dashboard to help run their fleets safely and effi-ciently.

“Leveraging the Mack GuardDog Connect telemat-ics solution platform, Mack customers now have the easiest path to compre-hensive fleet management, easy-to-use compliance apps and truck-specific navigation from Telogis,” said Susan Heystee, Ex-ecutive Vice President, Worldwide Sales at Telo-gis. “Mack customers will experience near-immediate ROI by maximizing uptime and lowering the total cost of ownership.”

The hardware, which is standard on Mack Pinna-cle, Mack Granite and Ti-tan by Mack models, is also central to the Mack Guard-Dog Connect telematics so-lution. GuardDog Connect enables real-time diagnosis

of issues, proactive com-munication of decision-critical information for the fleet manager, scheduling for repairs and confirma-tion that needed parts are in stock and ready to in-stall, all while the truck is still on the job.

Once GuardDog Con-nect is engaged, an auto-matic alert is sent to Mack OneCall, Mack’s 24/7 customer support center staffed by trained support specialists. Upon receiv-ing the notification and while the driver continues working, the Mack OneCall team immediately evalu-ates the situation. A case is opened in the Mack ASIST web-based fleet service management platform, the owner or fleet maintenance manager is contacted and the repair planning process begins through a customer-chosen dealer.

This process includes verification that a bay and the necessary parts are available while Mack On-eCall electronically sends repair instructions to the dealer. Every step of the process happens with-in minutes of the initial GuardDog Connect heads-up and is constantly man-aged by Mack OneCall. The end result is that tech-nicians are fully prepared when the truck arrives, get-ting the customer back on the road faster. b

Worldwide sales of al-ternative fuel vehicles will reach 14 percent of total sales of medium and heavy duty vehicles by 2035, while the number of global sales of vehicles with au-tonomous capability will grow from zero currently to 94.7 million, according to a new report from Navigant Research.

Medium and heavy duty vehicles (MHDVs) running on alternative fuel represent less than 5 percent of the total ve-hicle market today, and the vast majority of these use conventional internal combustion engines (ICE) powered by either gaso-line or diesel.

Navigant says that is changing as less expensive alternatives to petroleum-based fuels, such as natu-

ral gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG – also known as propane or autogas), and electricity make inroads in the market.

“Attractive business cases for medium and heavy duty alternative fuel vehicles are emerging across varying segments of the market,” says Scott Shepard, research analyst with Navigant Research. “Natural gas has a sig-nificant advantage over most alternative fuels, in that low fuel costs and advances in infrastructure for both liquefied natu-ral gas and fast-fill com-pressed natural gas make the fuel competitive in all market segments, includ-ing heavy duty long-haul trucking.”

While diesel will remain the primary fuel choice of

MHDVs throughout the forecast period, the per-centage of MHDVs pow-ered by diesel is expected to fall from more than 79 percent in 2014 to 76 per-cent in 2035.

Meanwhile, although significant challenges remain for bringing au-tonomous, or self-driving, vehicles to market, the competition among vehicle makers to offer autono-mous features in cars and trucks is strong, says a re-lated Navigant report.

“Combinations of ad-vanced driver assistance features that can enable semi-autonomous driving are now being brought to market for the first time,” says David Alexander, se-nior research analyst with Navigant Research. “The cost reductions brought about by increasing vol-umes and technological ad-vances make the installa-tion of the multiple sensors necessary for such capabil-ity feasible.” b

Utility Trailer Manufac-turing Company, the indus-try’s largest manufacturer of refrigerated trailers and a leading manufacturer of dry freight vans, flatbeds, and Tautliner curtainsided trailers is pleased to an-nounce that its Clearfield, Utah manufacturing plant has received the Liberty Mutual Insurance Silver Safety Award.

The Safety Awards are based on DART rates (Days Away, Restricted and Transferred), which are calculated by factoring the number of hours worked relative to the number of accidents at the plant. Low occurrences of accidents result in lower DART rates. In order to qualify for the Safety Award, a DART rate

of at least 60% better than the Bureau of Labour Sta-tistics (BLS) is needed with a minimum of 200,000 work-hours.

The Clearfield manu-facturing plant achieved a DART rate of 1.62, which is 29% of the 2012 trailer manufacturing industry average of 5.5. “Being rec-ognized by Liberty Mutual is a big deal. But not as big a deal as sending em-ployees home to see their families and loved ones after every shift. Without the support of both Utility’s owners and employees, we could not have achieved this award,” said Dennis Wilson, Utility’s Clearfield Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager.

“This is the second Sil-

ver Award in a row for our Clearfield plant, and our 8th Liberty Safety Award since 2001. We are proud of the effort and dedica-tion of our employees and management team for their continued commit-ment to keep themselves and their fellow employ-ees safe,” said Bob Griffis, Corporate EHS Manager for Utility Trailer Manu-facturing.

The Liberty Mutual Silver Safety Award was presented to Steve Smith (Utility’s now-retired Plant Manager and employee for 42 ½ years) and the en-tire management team, on behalf of all Clearfield em-ployees. In presenting the award for Liberty Mutual Insurance, Robert K. Gard-ner (ARM), Risk Control Services, stated, “You and your associates should be very proud of this achieve-ment that only a small percentage of companies qualify for.” b

Utility’s Clearfield, Utah Manufacturing Plant Receives Safety Award

Allison Transmission showcased its largest range of transmissions ever in Europe at the IAA Com-mercial Vehicle Exposition, Sept. 25 to Oct. 2 in Han-nover. Products ranged from 1000/2000 Series models for light-duty com-mercial vehicles to 3000 Series and 4000 Series for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, and the 6000 Se-ries off-highway unit.

Other displays on view at the two-floor Allison exhibition were be the cross-drive steering trans-missions for tracked mili-tary vehicles, the highly-efficient TC10TM for road tractors and the Torq-matic Series transmission specially designed for city and intercity bus and coach applications. Both H 40/50 EP and H 3000 parallel hybrid systems were also featured.

Allison develops prod-ucts that offer a significant competitive advantage together with high effi-ciency and environmental benefits. Optimized con-ventional propulsion units, complementing technol-ogy with natural gas and advanced hybrid systems – Allison helps vehicles achieve superior efficiency and performance.

FuelSense – The savings are automatic

Allison Transmission recently introduced Fu-elSense, a new fuel-effi-ciency package that can deliver even higher fuel savings for fleets – up to 20 percent depending on application and configura-tion. In combination with 5th Generation Electronic Controls, FuelSense fea-tures automatically adapt shift schedules and torque, maximizing transmission efficiency based on load, grade and duty cycle. Also suitable for vehicles with natural gas engines, IAA visitors can calculate po-tential yearly cost savings in the FuelSense training area.Hybrids – For the sake of the environment

The H 40/50 EP and H 3000 parallel hybrid sys-tems also offer savings po-tential. Currently, around 5,000 city buses equipped with Allison H 40/50 EP drive units are operating in over 230 cities worldwide. The H 3000 for medium- and heavy-duty trucks is based on the Allison 3000 Series and was designed to offer reductions in fuel consumption of up to 25 percent depending on ap-plication and duty cycle.

Natural Gas Engines – Also in the Euro 6

Econic NGT Allison Au-tomatics are perfectly suit-ed to natural gas engines in a wide range of applica-tions. Patented torque con-verter technology enhances response-time-to-throttle cycles of natural gas en-gines, multiplying engine torque at vehicle launch and smoothly transferring power to the drive wheels. As a result, whether using renewable bio natural gas or natural gas derived from fossil fuels, Allison trans-missions deliver superior vehicle performance, while increasing fuel efficiency. Stop-Start Technology – For ultra-low carbon powertrains

In July, Allison Trans-mission presented a new integrated stop-start tech-nology in conjunction with Project “ETHOS.” In partnership with the Cali-fornia Energy Commis-sion, Cummins developed an engine that uses E85 (a high-octane blend of etha-nol and gasoline) as a fuel to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Cum-mins ETHOS 2.8L engine is coupled with an Alli-son 2550 fully automatic transmission – for smooth and efficient stop-start operation. Until now the ETHOS 2.8L has proven capable of exceeding the 50 percent CO2 emission reductions outlined as a project goal. b

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC has expanded its remanufac-turing capabilities and capacity with a $3.2 mil-lion capital investment in equipment and facility up-grades at its Huntington, Indiana, plant. The Bendix Brake Shoe Remanufactur-ing Center now handles the complete salvage, coining, and assembly processes that make up start-to-finish remanufacturing and can produce several million re-manufactured commercial vehicle brake shoes annu-ally.

Bendix, the North American leader in the de-velopment and manufac-ture of leading-edge active safety and braking system technologies, began serial production of reman shoes at the facility in the fall of 2012. Combining Bendix’s nearly 40 years’ experience in remanufacturing with Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake’s acknowledged leadership in wheel-end

solutions and brake shoe manufacturing, the center has assembled more than 1.9 million brake shoes since its opening in 2012.

Bendix Spicer Founda-tion Brake LLC (BSFB) is a joint venture between Bendix Commercial Vehi-cle Systems LLC and Dana Commercial Vehicle Prod-ucts, LLC.

“As the commercial ve-hicle industry continues to adapt to ever-changing regulations and compli-ance standards, fleets and owner-operators are turn-ing in greater numbers to high-quality remanufac-tured brake shoes as a solu-tion in their parts strategy,” said Henry Foxx, Bendix Director of remanufactured products. “The Bendix Brake Shoe Remanufac-turing Center grew from our desire to provide re-man brake shoes offering the durability, reliability, performance, and extend-ed lining life expected of original equipment. With

the completion of the next phase of production expan-sion, in tandem with our three-tiered portfolio of re-man brake shoe offerings, Bendix is better equipped than ever to meet every customer’s need for safety, performance, and value.”

Bendix’s Brake Shoe Remanufacturing Center employs 65 people, part of Huntington’s total ros-ter of 430 employees. The center’s 74,000 square feet bring the Huntington op-eration’s total to 547,000 square feet, comprising four manufacturing and assembly facilities as well as Bendix’s primary North American distribution cen-ter.

Key to the upgrades to the Brake Shoe Remanu-facturing Center is the coining process, which returns used brake shoes to the shape engineered by their original equip-ment (OE) manufactur-ers. Bendix has always coined 100 percent of its

remanufactured brake shoes, and the upgrade increases coining capac-ity and capability.

“A brake shoe under-goes a tremendous amount of force and drastic tem-perature changes during its life cycle,” said Frank Gilboy, BSFB brake shoe product line manager. “Over time, this results in deformation. It’s twisted, or it’s stretched, and if you just reline that shoe with new friction – like most brake shoe reliners do – you’re going to have issues when it engages with the drum, because it no longer has the correct geometry to provide full contact and stopping power.”

The new Bendix 1,000-ton coining press reproduc-es the original manufactur-ing methods, applying the full tonnage necessary to return the shoe to its prop-er shape and OE specifica-tions.

All of those specifica-tions are crucial to main-taining brake safety and performance in the era of the National Highway Traf-fic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Reduced Stop-ping Distance (RSD) man-date and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administra-

tion’s (FMCSA) Compli-ance, Safety, Accountabil-ity (CSA) program.

“We understand how critical it is for all the welds to be correct, for the thick-ness of the steel to be cor-rect, and for all the other factors that go into brake shoe engineering to be con-sidered,” Gilboy said. “Our inspection uses all of our OE design experience and criteria to make sure that the shoes we inspect and put into remanufacturing production are suitable to go back out there for an-other lifetime in the field.”

Other improvements to the Brake Shoe Remanu-facturing Center include a self-contained salvage and de-lining area, which pre-vents dust and other con-taminants from reaching the painting and riveting process; four automated de-liners that remove the friction with greater accu-racy and reduce the chance of accidental shoe damage; and two new 24-cubic-foot blasters that clean the shoes in order to provide the best adhesion surface for the new lining. Additionally, a new 2,000-square-foot paint line can handle up to 500 parts per hour.

When Bendix reman

shoes undergo final as-sembly, the production line uses the same riveting pro-cedure used by OE manu-facturers. This ensures cor-rect lining attachment for maximum lining service.

The improvements were also designed to meet Ben-dix’s rigorous standards for safe and environmen-tally sustainable workplac-es. Employee ergonomic and safety considerations played significant roles in developing the production line, which also incorpo-rates extensive wastewater treatment and waste diver-sion methods.

The always expanding remanufactured Bendix brake shoe product port-folio is supported with in-house research and de-velopment – along with ongoing comprehensive friction testing – conducted at the company’s engineer-ing center in Kalamazoo, Michigan, as well as a state-of-the-art order fulfill-ment operation to ensure that customers receive fast and easy access to invento-ry. Fleets and truck opera-tors received the fuel ef-ficiency and cost-saving message loud and clear as the Kenworth T680 Advantage ‘Efficiency in Motion’ Tour visited nu-merous Kenworth dealer-hosted events throughout the United States and Canada.

The Kenworth T680 Advantage, Kenworth’s most fuel-efficient truck, features the optimized powertrain combina-tion of the 2014 PACCAR

MX-13 engine and Eaton Fuller Advantage auto-mated transmission, Da-na’s Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem drive axles, and the new, factory-installed Kenworth aerodynamic package. As a result, the T680 Advantage with 76-inch sleeper offers up to a 5 percent fuel economy improvement compared to last year’s T680 76-inch sleeper with 2013 PAC-CAR MX-13 engine, Ea-ton UltraShift PLUS LAS 10-speed transmission,

and Dana DSP40 6x4. CIT Kenworth Chicago

- Mokena, Kenworth of Indianapolis, and Inland Kenworth - Phoenix were among recent stops on the tour, which began in June and concluded Oct. 1 at Kenworth Northwest - Yakima in Washington state.

The Kenworth T680 Ad-vantage ‘Efficiency in Mo-tion’ Tour certainly dem-onstrated to customers that the T680 Advantage can significantly reduce their

fuel costs while remaining a driver’s first choice, ac-cording to Scott Nichols, principal operating man-ager for Kenworth of India-napolis.

“Sometimes fleet and truck operators can find it difficult to discover a truck that significantly low-ers their operating costs while at the same time of-fers drivers a great driving experience,” Nichols said. “Kenworth has success-fully met that challenge in the past by offering trucks with industry-leading aero-dynamics and comfort. The tour demonstrated to our customers that the Ken-worth T680 Advantage is something better, a whole lot better. The overall feed-back we heard from both

fleet owners and drivers was amazing.

“When fleets begin to realize the fuel savings with the T680 Advantage package, they get excited and really start to en-gage, asking all sorts of questions about the dif-ferent fuel-saving com-ponents,” said Nichols. “When drivers see all the comfort the T680 has to offer and the features that make it an easier truck to drive, they love it and want it as their truck,” Nichols said.

From their comments, it’s apparent that both fleet owners and drivers see the Kenworth T680 as the all-in-one truck model for both of them, Nichols added.

Don Blake, Sales Man-ager for Inland Kenworth - Phoenix, agreed. He said the tour’s recent stop there attracted a variety of cus-tomers from owner-oper-ators to small fleets with up to five trucks as well as large fleets of 50 or more trucks. Even the CEO of one of the largest trucking companies in North Amer-ica showed up wearing a Kenworth baseball cap, he added. They all found that the Kenworth T680 Advantage offers compel-ling features that make it a highly productive and driver-friendly truck, Blake said.

“Our customers were very interested in all of the fuel-saving components and aerodynamic features of the T680 Advantage,” Blake added. “They were loving the idea that a truck could be both fuel-efficient and attract drivers.”

The fuel-saving compo-

nents of the T680 Advan-tage also greatly appealed to CIT Kenworth Chicago customers during the tour’s stop in Mokena, Ill.

“Improving fuel econ-omy is a leading factor in the decision-making process for truck owners, fleet managers, and busi-ness owners,” said Rod-ney Shaffer, Chicago area regional manager for CIT Kenworth. “The tour pro-vided an excellent educa-tional opportunity for our customers regardless of size to learn how the T680 Advantage can help them gain much-needed im-provements in fuel econo-my.”

Shaffer said the tour’s 53-foot trailer featuring a self-guided exhibit with interactive displays offered customers a lot of good information to help them understand the benefits of the T680 Advantage. In the end, it was customers’ per-sonal experience with the Kenworth T680, particular-ly those equipped with the PACCAR MX-13 engine, that ultimately convinced them of the value of the T680 Advantage.

“With customers re-porting noticeable fuel economy gains and over-all reductions in operat-ing costs compared to the performance of their 15-li-ter engines, the PACCAR MX-13 engine is gaining significant traction in our market by reputation,” Shaffer said. “Our sales staff had visiting custom-ers who were ready to fi-nalize the paperwork on the purchase of the T680 with the PACCAR MX-13 engine.” b

A mix of industry pro-fessionals totaling 10,362 gathered at TRADEX in Abbotsford, British Co-lumbia, September 19-20, 2014 for TRUXPO, Western Canada’s largest commer-cial trucking show. Held biennially, TRUXPO is THE event where industry meets to source and com-pare new products and see the latest in commercial truck and transportation equipment and services.

“This year’s show was an unquestionable suc-cess,” said Mark Cusack, National Show Manag-er. “Traffic was steady throughout the two-day event and attendance sur-passed our expectations. Exhibitor feedback about the quantity and quality of visitors has been over-whelmingly positive. And we were thrilled that mem-bers of the Indo-Canadian community came out in especially high numbers in support of their industry.”

“We found the quality and volume of the traffic up from previous years at TRUXPO,” said Kevin Olson-Brooks, Sales Man-ager with Harbour Interna-tional Trucks, an exhibitor with this year’s show. “The show was well-attended and customers seemed to be relaxed and enjoying themselves. Advertising was up this year, which definitely drove traffic into the show.”

“It was an awesome show – the best in the past eight years,” said Johnny Z with ZZ Chrome, who also exhibited at this year’s show. “We don’t usually sell at the show, but we sold over $30,000 in equip-ment. I also talked with several other exhibitors and they indicated it was the best show ever!”

A variety of special features helped to bolster attendance at TRUXPO 2014 – including the BCTA Sector Update Confer-ence, which took place immediately prior to the show opening; an indus-try luncheon with keynote speaker Michael “Pinball” Clemons; an educational component with seminar sessions geared to drivers and industry personnel; special performances by

multicultural entertain-ment; and a profession-ally organized and judged Show & Shine.

The success of this year’s edition would not have been possible without a strong relationship with our presenting partner, the British Columbia Trucking Association (BCTA).

“BCTA has always been proud of our affiliation with TRUXPO, but the 2014 show amply demonstrated that partnering with Master Promotions Ltd. was a wise choice,” said Louise Yako, President & CEO, BCTA. “The additional events and promotional activities provided great value to the show’s exhibitors and visi-tors alike. It was energiz-ing to be at TRUXPO to see so many industry people enjoying the show, being exposed to and learning about new technologies, equipment and opportuni-ties, as well as having the

chance to re-connect with old friends and make new acquaintances. Participa-tion in the show demon-strated the strength of the industry and the fact that the future is very bright.”

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC will launch the next generation of its leading-edge active safety technologies in 2015, introducing stationary vehi-cle braking and other func-tions currently not avail-able in North America. The next generation technology significantly enhances the performance of its existing systems through stronger, deeper integration and up-graded components. It also delivers alert prioritization and a significant reduction of false alerts that some-times can be apparent in single-sensor systems.

Bendix, the North American leader in the de-velopment and manufac-ture of commercial vehicle active safety and braking solutions, has received overwhelmingly positive feedback after demonstrat-ing the system for numer-ous fleets and is currently road-testing the system with major commercial ve-hicle manufacturers.

“For decades, Bendix has expanded the frontiers of vehicle safety like no other company, from pio-neering antilock brakes to developing the first widely available full-stability solu-tion for the North Ameri-can commercial vehicle market to launching active cruise control with brak-ing and collision mitiga-tion technology,” said Scott Burkhart, Bendix Vice President Sales, Marketing & Business Development. “Now, we’ve improved and fused together the most advanced technolo-gies in the Bendix commer-cial vehicle safety suite to create a system that does more – and does it better – for today’s commercial vehicle market. Fleets can be confident in the system, because at its core are tried and true technologies that have performed reliably over many years and mil-lions of miles.”

The next-generation system builds on the prov-

en technology of Bendix ESP Electronic Stability Program full-stability sys-tem, Bendix Wingman Ad-vanced – A Collision Miti-gation Technology, and AutoVue Lane Departure Warning (LDW) System from Bendix CVS. Bendix ESP addresses both roll and directional stability through sensors that recognize and mitigate conditions that could lead to rollover and loss-of-control. Wingman Advanced uses a radar sen-sor mounted to the front of a vehicle to provide active cruise control with braking features, along with colli-sion mitigation technology that delivers both warnings and active interventions to help drivers potentially avoid rear-end collisions or at least help reduce their severity. AutoVue links a camera with a wide field of view to an on-board ECU that uses image recognition software to track visible lane markings and detects when the vehicle begins to

drift toward an unintended lane change.

Burkhart noted that along with the additional features and technology integration, the next-gen-eration active safety sys-tem will also offer fleets real “one-stop shopping” convenience with an all-inclusive, better-perform-ing safety option provided and supported by a single manufacturer.

In a first for the North American commercial ve-hicle industry, Bendix’s next generation of active safety upgrades and fuses three component tech-nologies – camera, radar, and brakes – with ground-breaking results.

“When these systems are fully integrated – ‘talk-ing’ directly to each other, in a sense, with multiple sensors confirming situ-ational data – you get far more robust decision making in the system as a whole,” said TJ Thomas, Bendix Director of Mar-keting and Customer So-lutions, Controls group. “That means more effec-tive alert prioritization and a substantial reduction of false alerts. And this sensor data fusion is also crucial to unlocking new safety

capabilities like stationary vehicle braking.”

Stationary vehicle brak-ing is a technological step forward from the station-ary object alerts of Wing-man Advanced. Currently, the stationary object alert function gives the driver a warning only, of up to 3.0 seconds, when a large me-tallic in-lane object is block-ing the lane of travel. The stationary vehicle braking function – part of the in-novative next-generation Bendix technology – not only delivers the warning, with more alert time avail-able, but also can apply the brakes if the system recog-nizes the metallic object as a vehicle.

To make this possible, Bendix has adapted tech-nology powered by the Mobileye System-on-Chip

EyeQ2 processor with ad-vanced object detection al-gorithms.

“Today’s announce-ment merely scratches the surface of what our next-generation safety system can do. Other improve-ments and new capabilities of Bendix’s next-generation active safety system will be announced as next year’s launch date nears,” Thom-as said. “The exceptional menu of enhanced and new features helps elevate safety to a new level.”

The new system will also integrate with Safety-Direct from Bendix CVS, a user-friendly Web portal that provides fleet opera-tors with videos of severe events, along with compre-hensive feedback on their fleet and drivers. The sys-

The next-generation driver assistance system joins Bendix’s ever-grow-ing portfolio of technol-ogy that delivers on safety, vehicle performance and efficiency, and lower own-ership costs, along with ro-bust post-sales support.

“Fleets are very excited about this technology, and Bendix is proud to work with them to improve high-

way safety,” Thomas said. “We know that no matter how advanced a system is, it won’t replace the need for safe, alert driv-ers practicing safe driving habits, or diminish the importance of compre-hensive driver training. As long as there are trucks on the road, we’ll equip fleets and drivers with the best tools we can to help them reach their destinations safely.” For more informa-tion about Bendix safety systems visit www.bendix.com. b

Goodyear Chooses Mack Granite To Moor Blimp

model used to haul the blimp is the only one of its kind, built specifically for Goodyear when the company determined it needed a truck-mounted mooring system, known as a mast truck, rather than the previous sys-tem of mooring its older, smaller blimps to the ground. Newer, larger blimps require the more efficient truck-mount-ed option. The Granite model’s strong frame is designed to easily man-age harsh work condi-tions and offers the mus-cle and finesse needed to haul mammoth loads as treasured as the Good-year blimp.

“Mack prides itself on being easy to do business with, and our sales force is known for working in tandem with the customer to develop the needed specification for any application,” said Stu Russoli, Mack Vocational Segment Product Manager. “The Mack Granite offers an incredibly durable base for essentially any vo-cational application and

allows for modifications to ensure application excellence.”

Mike Bloom of Nuss Truck & Equipment, based in Rochester, Minnesota, met with Goodyear representa-tives at Goodyear’s headquarters in Akron, Ohio, where they dis-cussed design options and their needs. The truck needed to move the blimp in and out of hangars, as well as offer ground support when the blimp is not in the air, all while standing up to wind loads of as much as 78 knots (78 knots = 90 mph).

Goodyear chose a 2014 Mack Granite model equipped with a Mack MP8 engine, Mack 200 series carriers with inter-axle locking differ-entials and four Good-year G278 MSD tires in size 425/65R22.5 on the front paired with eight

G572 LHD tires in size 11R24.5 to get the job done.

The truck was built at the Macungie Cab & Vehicle Assembly fa-cility, where all Mack models for North Amer-ica and export are built. The Granite was or-dered as a three-axle model but was modified by Engineered Chassis Systems, a subsidiary of the Nuss Group, which built the body, con-verted it to an all-wheel drive 8x8 and installed the twin steer axles. The Mack Vehicle Op-tion Center installed the TIREBOSS Tire Pressure Control System on the drive axles.

“The innovation as-sociated with the new mast truck allows us the capability to effi-ciently operate the air-ship,” said Brad Crom-bie, global engineer for Goodyear. b

Needing a reliable truck tough enough to easily handle mooring the Goodyear Blimp, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company chose a modified Mack Granite model as a mast truck for its iconic cargo.

Weigh2GoBC is a net-work of weigh-in-motion and automatic vehicle iden-tification equipment that al-lows commercial vehicles to report to BC’s inspections stations electronically.

There are no fees asso-ciated with this self-serve program. Weigh2GoBC has a small number of tran-sponders available at no cost on a first come, first served basis and based on fleet size.

Vehicles that are en-rolled in the program reg-ister a transponder that sits on the dash of the truck and uses radio frequency to communicate.

As the vehicle approach-es a W2G equipped station,

the credentials are checked and the driver is signalled a green light that allows them to bypass that station or a red light which means that they have to report.

Participating stations are at Hope, Kamloops, Golden, Prince George, Quesnel, Vanderhoof, Pa-cific, Nordel and Parks-ville.

The benefits to the car-rier are in saving time and fuel by not having to stop at every station as well as reducing the amount of GHGs being emitted into the environment by trucks not having to idle through the stations.

Hendrickson Truck Com-mercial Vehicle Systems announces the launch of a global version of the Haul-maxx rear suspension sys-tem. The global Haulmaxx has its design roots planted firmly in North America and exemplifies the innovation and excellence in elasto-meric solutions that Hen-drickson has demonstrated throughout its history serv-ing the heavy-duty trucking industry.

Offered in a 21-ton (T) capacity, the global Haul-maxx was designed specifi-cally for those applications where light weight, dura-bility and driver comfort are essential. Through its innovative design, higher strength materials and advanced manufactur-ing methods, Haulmaxx’s weight is greatly reduced. Proven with extensive ve-hicle durability and labora-tory testing, Haulmaxx de-livers the reliability, quality and low maintenance cus-tomers have come to ex-pect from Hendrickson.

In addition, Haulmaxx utilizes elastomeric bolster springs and a progressive load spring (PLS) that work in syn-ergy to provide outstanding ride quality when the truck is empty. As payload increases, the PLS further engages and functions together with the elastomeric bolster springs as they compress to provide the additional stability vocational applications need.

Haulmaxx addresses the lower-end capacity ranges of the global truck market and rounds out Hendrickson’s portfolio of elastomeric so-lutions that have been in-troduced over the last four years. In 2010, Hendrickson introduced the HUV voca-tional rear suspension sys-tem at 27T to address the global mid-range capacity market. In 2013, Hendrick-son introduced ULTIMAAX to serve not only the mid-range capacities but also the more extreme, higher capac-ities with 27T – 37T and 40 – 48T solutions respectively. Both HUV and ULTIMAAX are characterized by unique

designs that provide out-standing durability and sig-nificant weight savings for increased payload compared to traditional suspension designs. Both also carry a distinct elastomeric spring design that not only helps provide an ideal balance of empty ride quality and load-ed stability, but also protects the chassis, cargo and body equipment from excessive vibration and road shock due to potholes and other road inconsistencies.

“HUV and ULTIMAAX addressed the needs of spe-cific customer segments, and raised the bar for du-rability and performance for heavy truck suspen-sions across the globe,” said Matt Joy Vice Presi-dent and General Manager for Hendrickson Truck Commercial Vehicle Sys-tems. “With the launch of Haulmaxx, we’re rounding out our offering of supe-rior elastomeric solutions which continue to provide innovative ride solutions to advance the global com-mercial transportation in-dustry.”

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has entered the increasingly important business of driver safety systems with the introduction of its proprietary suite of safety systems, Detroit Assurance. With Detroit Assurance, customers can – for the first time – fully integrate their Detroit powertrain and safety system, result-ing in a higher level of safety and performance. DTNA is the first truck OEM to design and offer a proprietary suite of safety systems.

Detroit Assurance builds on the safe drive innovations pioneered by parent company Daimler. Most recently, Daimler showcased the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025, which was equipped with an ad-vanced vehicle commu-nication system featur-ing radar, sensor and camera technologies that enhance driver per-

formance and safety. “Daimler has long

served as the leader in offering options that make the roads safer for drivers and pas-sengers,” said Richard Howard, Vice President of Sales and Market-ing for Daimler Trucks North America. “Detroit Assurance serves to emphasize our ongoing commitment to innova-tion and safety.”

Available for the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution and Casca-dia equipped with De-troit engines, the De-troit Assurance safety suite includes driver-friendly controls, and is seamlessly inte-grated into the truck’s dashboard, engine and transmission elec-tronics, resulting in smoother and more ac-curate transitions. De-troit Assurance track the truck’s position in comparison to other traffic and obstacles

to warn the driver or, if necessary, slow the truck down automati-cally. Detroit Assurance includes:• A base bumper-

mounted radar system that features collision mitigation as well as adaptive cruise con-trol. It uses active braking assist that is always on and applies the brakes to miti-gate collisions, while adaptive cruise main-tains a safe following distance.

• An optional camera system with lane de-parture warning. It uses audio and visual indicators to notify a driver they have un-intentionally departed their lane.“Detroit Assurance

not only benefits driver performance, but also directly impacts the ve-hicle’s overall operation through automatic tran-sitions,” said Howard. “We’re proud to contin-ue Daimler’s long tradi-tion of being the leading provider of safety op-tions that protect driv-ers and improve safe-ty.” b

After graduating its first class of students earlier this year, the Peterbilt Techni-cian Institute (PTI) has ex-panded to a second location in Lisle, Ill., with classes be-ginning this week. Peterbilt Motors Company teamed with Universal Technical Institute (UTI) to create the comprehensive technician training program last year at UTI’s Dallas campus. Ap-plications for enrollment are currently being accepted for PTI at both campuses.

“Due to the success of our inaugural Peterbilt Technician Institute, we’re very pleased to grow the program in the key Chicago market and we plan to con-tinue expansion to other locations nationwide,” said Robert Woodall, Peterbilt Director of Sales and Mar-keting. “PTI provides our

dealer network with a great resource for staffing their service areas with quali-fied, highly trained techni-cians that will ultimately result in greater shop pro-ductivity and profitability, while helping ensure the highest possible levels of customer satisfaction.”

PTI is a 12-week pro-gram conducted in con-junction with UTI that fea-tures exclusive classroom and hands-on instruction of total vehicle diagnostics, maintenance and repairs. It also covers essential work-place topics such as cus-tomer service, dealership shop operations and laws and regulations. Students graduate with a bumper-to-bumper knowledge of com-mercial vehicles, including a focus on the complete lineup of Peterbilt trucks

and PACCAR Engines. Students are sponsored by Peterbilt dealerships which then offer graduates em-ployment upon completion of the program.

The program is part of UTI’s Manufacturer Spe-cific Advanced Training (MSAT) and classes are taught by a dedicated UTI instructor with support from Peterbilt.

“PTI and other train-ing offered through Uni-versal Technical Institute are among the most com-prehensive of its kind and prepares students with the education and hands-on experience that provide a solid foundation for a suc-cessful career,” said Kim McWaters, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at UTI. “Our dynamic learn-ing environment, highly effective instructors and proven curriculum are helping the commercial vehicle industry and oth-ers overcome the shortage of qualified, skilled techni-cians.” b

The Kenworth T680 and Kenworth T880 are now available with the fuel-saving SmarTire Tire Pres-sure Monitoring System (TPMS) by Bendix CVS as an option when specifying these models.

With the Bendix Tire Pressure Management System, Kenworth offers a special display for the T680 and T880 on the Kenworth Driver Performance Center 5-inch in-dash screen. The display operates when the truck is parked and fea-tures PSI and temperature for each tire. The system also supports super singles and trailer tires. The facto-ry-installed Bendix system uses wheel-mounted sen-

sors in each tire to moni-tor the tire’s pressure and temperature. Sensors are located on the steer and drive axle wheels. If tire pressure becomes too low, or tire temperature be-comes too high, the system sends a signal to the driver via the dash display.

Operating at recom-mended tire pressure is important for optimal tire life and fuel economy. Kenworth T680 “Fleets and truck operators are becoming more proactive in addressing tire inflation as they strive to maximize each truck’s fuel efficien-cy,” said Kurt Swihart, Ken-worth Marketing Director. “Now, with the Bendix sys-

tem for the T680 and T880, they can take advantage of an easier, very efficient and time-saving way to regu-larly monitor tire pressure and temperature and gain enhanced tire life. The re-sult can be less downtime and more money in their pocket.” Kenworth T880 According to Bendix, a tire that is under-inflated by as little as 10 percent can re-sult in a 1.5 percent drop in fuel economy, which may increase fuel spending by up to $1,000 per year for a single truck. Under-infla-tion by 20 percent results in a 30 percent reduction in tire life. A tire failure on the road due to improper tire inflation can also rack up large roadside assis-tance charges, depending on when and where they occur. For more informa-tion call or visit a local Kenworth dealer, or visit www.bendix.com. b

Peterbilt now offers a new anti-theft system for its Models 579 and 567 equipped with PACCAR MX-13 Engines, providing customers with an extra layer of security.

“The anti-theft system integrates with the MX-13

Engine and the vehicle’s Driver Information Cen-tre to require operators to enter a unique pass-code to start the truck,” says Peterbilt Chief Engi-neer Landon Sproull. “If an incorrect code is en-tered, the engine will be

disabled until the correct code is used.”

As added security, Sproull said, the engine must be started within six minutes of entering the code, or the code will need to be entered again. Pass-words can be changed and the system can be activated or deactivated through any Peterbilt dealership’s ser-vice department.

The anti-theft system is now in production and available for order. b

Delivering improved fuel economy, reduced main-tenance and lower weight, the Dana Spicer AdvanTEK 40 tandem drive axle is now available for all Peterbilt heavy-duty truck models, Peterbilt Motors Company recently announced.

The efficient axle design with AdvanTEK gearing and optimized integration with Peterbilt’s chassis can improve fuel efficiency by up to two percent, or ap-proximately $1,500 in fuel costs annually.

“This new axle provides customers with numerous bottom-line benefits, par-ticularly in linehaul appli-cations, including higher fuel economy, lower main-tenance and increased pay-loads,” said Robert Wood-all, Peterbilt Director of Sales and Marketing. “With the AdvanTEK 40 custom-ers can spec the fastest axle ratios in the industry to handle higher torque in-put while reducing engine speeds by 200 rpm for bet-ter fuel efficiency.”

Customers can realize additional savings through

lower service requirements and reduced downtime. For instance, it features the industry’s first non-mainte-nance u-tube breather that extends lubricant life. And less lubricant is required with an on-demand lubri-cation system that only pumps when necessary, re-ducing the needed amount by up to five pints.

Durability and reliability are enhanced through the AdvanTEK 40 design. Op-timum inter-axle driveline angles minimize noise vibra-tion harshness to increase u-joint life and reduce wear on other components.

The axles also feature differential locking to pro-vide maximum traction when needed.

The AdvanTEK 40 is available on Peterbilt Models 587, 579, 567, 389, 384, 382, 367, 365, 348 and 320. It is ideally suited for direct-drive transmission drivetrains re-quiring ratios from 2.26 to 2.79. It is compatible with the SPL350-XL (required with and limited to 2.26 and 2.39 axle ratios) and SPL250-XL drivelines. b

Mack Trucks unveiled its newest integrated pow-ertrain offering, the Mack MP7 405 Super Econo-dyne (SE). Available with 405 horsepower and 1,560 lb.-ft. of torque, the MP7 405SE boosts fuel efficien-cy while delivering all the power required to get the job done.

The Super Econodyne system is designed with all-Mack proprietary com-ponents for a complete Mack Pedigree Powertrain. The MP7 engine, Mack mDRIVE automated man-ual transmission (AMT), Mack proprietary drive axles and Mack’s custom software work seamlessly as an integrated package providing industry-leading fuel efficiency without compromising power or performance.

“The MP7 is the latest Mack engine to be avail-able in the Super Econo-dyne rating,” said Roy Horton, Mack director of product marketing. “Cus-tomers who spec the fuel-efficient MP7 SE package with the overdrive AMT

and Mack’s C125/126 ax-les can experience up to a 4 percent fuel efficiency improvement compared with the standard MP7 and AMT package.”

The lightweight MP7 offers an outstanding power-to-weight ratio, ideal for maximizing pay-loads. Available in Mack Pinnacle™ models, the Greenhouse Gas 2014-cer-tified MP7 405SE is ideal for regional and bulk haul applications up to 80,000 pounds on predominant-ly flat terrain and up to 70,000 pounds on rolling hills.

“The MP7 405SE deliv-ers the legendary Mack power and performance our customers have come to expect from an integrated Mack Pedigree Powertrain, but with even greater fuel efficiency,” Horton said. “It allows our customers to maximize payloads, save on fuel and increase their return on investment – all without compromising power.”

The Mack MP7 405SE is available now for order. b

Trucking industry rep-resentatives from across Canada will soon take part in a series of regional roundtables that will help to clearly define the knowl-edge, skills, and abilities that truck drivers are ex-pected to demonstrate on the job.

The initiative is the lat-est phase of Trucking HR Canada’s Driving the Fu-ture project, which is sup-ported by the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) and every provincial truck-ing association.

Trucking HR Canada says the roundtables will produce detailed in-formation to help guide driving schools when developing training pro-grams, ensure that grad-uating drivers are more employable, and better meet the trucking indus-try’s needs. The work also represents an impor-tant step toward manda-tory entry-level driver training, and efforts to recognize truck driving as a skilled occupation.

“Each provincial asso-

ciation will invite a broad cross-section of industry members to participate in the roundtables,” says Angela Splinter, CEO of Trucking HR Canada. “These moderated ses-sions will help us tap into their expertise so that we clearly understand what drivers need to know, and ensure that the informa-tion reflects regional reali-ties.”

Regional roundtables are being scheduled be-tween August and October. The draft standard that emerges will then be circu-lated throughout the truck-ing industry for review and comments.

The three-year Driving the Future project is sup-ported with $1.2 million in funding from Employment and Social Development Canada. The work is also a direct response to recent recommendations by the CTA’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Truck Driver Shortage in Canada, and a landmark Conference Board of Canada report on the shortage. b
