Other Distinguished Attendees
Special Alumni Recognition NHS Alumna, Earline Wolfe Linder ’34, has attended all five All-Classes Reunions. Earline said, “I enjoy going, it’s just to see the people. They have a good time.”
Earline shared some of her early childhood memories of family and school. “We lived in Alabama and my father worked in a quarry inspecting the holes where the explosives were to be placed. He inspected one where he did not know the explosives have been placed already. The explo-
sion blew his right arm off and all but two fingers on his left hand.” The family moved to Hartland Township where, despite
the father’s handicap, they farmed.
Since she wanted to go on to high school she had to get there her-self. Her father bought a Ford Touring car and at the age of 14 she drove the eight miles to Norwalk High School, no drivers license or test needed! At the time Rt. 18 was half brick and half mud, but when asked if she ever missed school due to bad weath-er, she replied, “Never”.
The accompanying picture of Earline is her graduation picture. She exclaimed, “I wore a burgundy velvet dress for the picture. I felt so special. I thought I was the “Queen of Sheeba”. Her class had 63 graduates pictured in the yearbook, “The Album”.
Of interest to alumni from the 40s, 50s, and 60s is that the 1934 staff included Rev. Garcia, Mr. Laycock, Miss Mossman, Mr. Stevenson, Mr. Chandler, Mr. Rolsten, Mr. Smith, and Miss Bell.
When asked about the August 19th reunion, she replied, “I’ll be there if I can.” We’re betting she will be there!

TWO UNDEFEATED BASKETBALL SEASONS
Like this year’s team, to go undefeated, you have to win the close ones. The 1946 team did just that, barely getting by Sandusky by three points in their closest game.
Starters for the 1945-1946 basketball team were seniors, John Motsch, Charles Chandler, Gordon Schaechterle and juniors, Don Sweet and Wally Meagrow.
1945 was also the first year of the Northern Ohio League, now recog-nized as the oldest continuous athletic conference in the State of Ohio.
Their regular season consisted of 17 straight wins. They won their first tournament game against Tiffin Colum-bian, but the following night, after building up a very impressive 18 straight wins, they fell in an upset to Port Clinton.
First Row: Gordon Schaechterle, Don Sweet, John Motsch and Bill Patrick. Standing: Merle McConkey, Wally Meagorw, Coach Walls, Charles Chandler and Ted Jenkins
The 2011-2012 edition of the Boys Basketball team finished the regular season 20-0. The last team to go undefeated in the regular season was the 1945-46 team.

First Row: Ryan Hull, Grant Hull, Chianti Ghalson, Darian Cook, Ben Hara-way, Shane McGuckin Second Row: Trey Hallock, Kaleb Cashen, Jeff Thomas, Jake Fetherolf, Jacob Cashen, Cody Gregory, and Damius Peacock
This year’s team went on to win Sectional & District Championships. Their run ended at Regionals against Toledo Whitmer, completing their season for a final record of 23-1. Highlights include: The second perfect season in

The Norwalk Athletic Boosters was authorized by the Norwalk City School Board of Education to begin to raise funds for a new weight training facility for all sports. The Norwalk Athletic Boosters are excited that this first phase is an achievable goal that will pay dividends for the Norwalk Athletic program (all sports) and providing support for grades 7-12 almost immediately. The Norwalk Athletic Boosters have been authorized by the Board of Education to raise funds to build a new weight training and conditioning facility to serve the needs of the athletic programs of the Norwalk City Schools. This facility will more than double the size of the current weight room and will be able to serve 50 – 60 athletes at a time. The total cost of this proposed facility will be approximately $475,000. The Athletic Boosters have earmarked approximately $100,000 for up-to-date weight equipment to outfit the room. To donate to this project or for more information, go to: www.norwalktruckers.net/Athletic Boosters.

InRemembrance…Mrs.Mary(Hasselkus)Falke
Mary Elizabeth Hasselkus of Toledo came to teach at Norwalk High School begin-ning the 1939-40 school year. She was employed to teach French, and for a few years she also handled some English classes. Mary told me in later years that she did her stu-dent-teaching in Latin!
About 1945, she agreed to seek a Master’s Degree in Library Science and manage the school library. At that time the library was in the center room on the top floor next to the principal’s office. Many of us knew this later as Mrs. McConaha’s room. Eventually, the library moved to the large room at the east end of the top floor. At this point, Mary gave up teaching and worked full-time as a librarian.
In 1956, she was married to Kendall Falke, Norwalk High School’s award-winning Eng-lish teacher and Journalism advisor. For many years she carefully proofread each issue of the Signal. The yearbook indexes also were her work.
She and Kendall retired at the end of the 1973 school year to Milan, where they restored a classic home to house their several collections. Kendall passed away August 3, 1997; Mary survived until September 21, 2011.

Mission Statement of the Norwalk Public School Alumni Association
Message from the President Very supportive Norwalk City Schools Superintendents and strong School Board support has allowed us to carry out our mis-sion statement these past five years. Their in-kind donations have been critical to our success. We have no membership other than the NPSAA board members who carry out the mission state-ment. Therefore, there are no actual dues-paying members. We
are not a fundraising organiza-tion. We hold a 50/50 raffle and accept donations at the reunion. These are our only sources of revenue of operating expenses. If you would like to help us finan-cially, please send a check to NPSAA, C/O Norwalk City Schools, 134 Benedict Ave., Nor-walk, OH. Your support is need-ed and appreciated.
