The sun shone down brightly and awoke Cole the mole. It felt warm and he thought how the hole felt so cold. Time to venture above from way down below. From the bottom of the hole Cole decided to roam.

On the side of the hole, Cole the mole had to climb. Leaving the bottom of the hole far behind. The top of the hole was where Cole had his sights, and he had

to admit it was so very bright! Getting closer, although slowly, Cole would surely pull through. He could see the bright sun and the sky’s baby blue hue. Although leaving his home was not easy, it’s true. Cole wouldn’t give up and knew just what to do.

Once at the top, Cole felt nervous and scared. Still, he had to discover exactly what was up there. Nothing would stop him from feeling fresh air, and the sun seemed so welcoming with its

glowing bright stare. Sure enough as he pulled himself out of the hole, Cole the mole felt the sun and a gentle breeze blow. The open space was exciting, and Cole knew he must go. Go away from the hole and explore even more.

Cole stood at the edge of the hole for a while. Adventure was calling but what to decide? Where would he venture and how many miles? Travel above wasn’t really his style.

Staying close to the hole, round and round Cole did run. Just a mole on the grass enjoying the sun. This adventure above was going to be fun! Around the hole one more time and then he was done.

Time to set forth and walk away from his home. Jump over the hole then twenty steps was the goal. To the north he would travel, but of course moles are slow. Now Cole was prepared and so ready to

go. As he counted to ten (1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10) he thought, “halfway there.” Cole the Mole felt the freedom of the wind in his hair. Without a care he kept walking (11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20) not really sure where. Reaching his goal, Cole felt alert and aware.

Quickly Cole turned and smelled dirt in the hole. He had digging to do and of course moving stones. Cole knew it was time to venture back and go home! He prefers when it’s darker and much cooler like below.

Feeling proud of himself, Cole savored the moment. He had seen the wide world and you know what this meant. He could now tell the story to all of his friends. The story of “his minute” above ground that he’d spent.

Cole dove back in and he welcomed the cold. After all, the hot sun is tiring for a mole. No regrets will be mentioned when the story is told, and perhaps it will inspire other moles to be bold. This was the hope of our brave mole named Cole, that others would venture up top from below.

Page 19: True or False:

It’s a whole lot of hole thought Cole as he climbed. No better hole for a home will you find. Maybe tomorrow he will make up his mind to take twenty-five steps should he find some free time. Now he must plan the story and the rhyme.

They’ll meet again and have some more fun. Cole will tell the night moon when the day is done, that he met the sun and he had a good run. Back at the bottom, Cole’s adventure is done. As far as moles go, Cole’s a very brave one.
