HISTORY

The Turnberry Hotel is an iconic and revered destination, a landmark in Ayrshire and in world golf for over 110 years. With a long and illustrious history, it first opened

its doors in 1906 as a Station Hotel, with its own railway station located on the grounds. A haven for wealthy families, it allowed them to spend their summer on the glorious

Ayrshire coast, or the ‘Sunshine Corner’ as it was often referred to.

Standing sentinel above two Championship links courses, including the legendary Ailsa course, the scene wasn’t always so idyllic. In the First World War, Turnberry was

pressed into service because of its strategic coastal location and then again in the Second World War, the hotel was commissioned as a hospital afresh, and the courses

were converted into a Royal Air Force flying school.

Over the last century, Turnberry has welcomed a series of famous faces including Rod Stewart and Abba, as well as hosting a range of prestigious golf tournaments including

Open Championships, Senior Champions, Amateur Championships and the Ladies British Open in 2015.

In 1977, Turnberry hosted its first Open Championship, a tournament which firmly placed the resort on the world stage. This tournament saw the epic Duel in the Sun,

an incredible battle of wit and skill between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson which remains etched in the minds of golfers the world over. It’s the defining image of the Turnberry links

and is still talked about years later as one of the most iconic moments in golfing history. A sun-drenched Ailsa course, surrounded by cheering fans, providing a stern

test of nerve for the world’s best players.

I have played every Open Championship venue in Scotland and Turnberry, with the fantastic new improvements, is by a long way the best. The alterations to the course make the most of the stunning coastline and the new Halfway House at the lighthouse is awesome. Great views of Arran on a good day.

The practice facilities have also been improved and this together with a very tempting Pro Shop and excellent bar/restaurant make Turnberry the complete package. A must to visit.

The Ailsa is one of the world’s most loved golf courses and has had the privilege of hosting the Open Championship four times, including the unforgettable 1977 Duel in the

Sun. Since acquiring the resort in 2014, The Trump Organization and famed golf course architect Martin Ebert, of Mackenzie & Ebert, completed a meticulous historic study and

modern day review of the Ailsa course and have since created a true masterpiece.

A selection of inspiring changes have been implemented including the creation of five dramatic and stunning new holes plus a range of alterations covering virtually every

corner of the course. Turnberry’s iconic lighthouse, which has acted as a timeless beacon for golfers from across the world, has also re-emerged as the world’s most impressive

Play another memorable links golfing experience at Trump Turnberry, the magnificent King Robert the Bruce course.

The course is named after the King of Scotland, Robert the Bruce, a historical warrior who led Scotland to claim its right as an independent country in the Battle of

Bannockburn in June 1314. He was born in July 1274 in Turnberry Castle. The iconic Turnberry Lighthouse now stands amongst the ruins of this medieval castle.

Martin Ebert, responsible for the reborn Ailsa, has created this world-class golf experience which will thrill golfers of all abilities. Distinctive bunkering, visually attractive wetland areas

and swathes of gorse adds to the exciting challenges of this great links course.
