VisionStatement

The Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church is dedicated to the continuation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ’s ministry of salvation through the proclamation and teaching of the Gospel. We are a community of individuals and families who share the traditions and ageless beliefs of our Holy Orthodox Christian Faith.

“FAMILIES AND FAITH:How Religion is Passed Down Across Generations.”

As we prepare to begin a new academic year, I happened to come across a book review written by Anton C. Vrame, PhD, Director of the Department of Religious Education, Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, that I want to share with you. The title of the book reviewed, authored by Vern Bengston, et.al, is the very same title of this article. Coincidently, the theme of the 42nd Clergy-Laity Congress that took place in Philadelphia, PA this past July was: “The Orthodox Christian Family: A Dwelling of Christ and A Witness of His Gospel.”

The concern of “Families and Faith” and our Archdiocese’s focus on the family presents us with a perceived dilemma and some interesting questions. The question raised: “Is the family passing down ‘religious faith’ from one generation to the next?”

The questions asked in response to the dilemma are:

1. To what extent are parents passing on their faith in today’s rapidly changing society?

2. Have the many social and cultural changes of the last 50 years eroded the ability of families to transmit __religious faith to the next generation?

3. Why are some parents more successful at passing on their faith than other parents?

The authors of “Families and Faith” were surprised at the results of their study. Their research indicated that families are doing better at passing down religious faith. “Six out of ten children remained within the religious community of their parents. So, the next question becomes, “What kinds of families do better than others and what can parishes do?”

The study indicated that “warm, accepting, close, affirming families are better at transmitting faith than

cold, distant and authoritarian families. When children perceive their relationship with parents as close, affirming and accepting, they are more likely to identify with their parents’ religious practices and beliefs, while relationships marked by coldness, ambivalence or preoccupation are likely to result in religious differences.”The level of involvement of parents and grandparents in matters of faith and the faith community is central. In other words, when parents take faith and church seriously, their children are more likely to remain

within the same religious community. The authors also discovered “that parents who share the same religion do better at religious transmission.”

Parents must set the example for their child or children to follow. Sleeping in on Sundays or making sports a priority on Sunday is going to translate that church isn’t really that important in a child’s mind. If church isn’t really that important to parents then what does it do to the transmission of faith from one generation to the next?

Don’t forget grandparents! They are a valuable resource for sharing the faith, traditions and practices of our church with their grandchild or grandchildren. Yes, they have the time to spend and share, so why not take advantage of their time, love and wisdom. Let’s not forget what the church has to offer in nurturing our children in their faith…2,000 years of experience, tradition and wisdom. We hope to see you soon in church and your child or children in our Sunday Church School program. God Bless and be with you and yours always!!

In Christ’s Abundant Love,

Fr. Dennis

Our Stewardship program has thus far collected $375,316 of the $550,000 that has been budgeted for 2014. We thank those stewards of our community who have submitted their pledge cards. Your pledge amount should be prayerfully considered, re-membering that it is applied to the operating expenses of our church. Once these operating expenses are covered, stewardship funds cover our AMC ministry outreach programs.

Stewardship also includes volunteering to serve on church com-mittees, helping to organize and execute church functions, sing-ing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, and other forms of ministry-- it is engagement in the total life of the Church. We encourage all parishioners to consider becoming more involved with the many organizations and ministries our Archangel Michael community offers. You can meet leaders and representatives from all of our organizations at Welcome Back Sunday on Septem-ber 7th, immediately following the Divine Liturgy, and register for upcoming events.

We also want to clarify what will happen to the money we earn from our upcoming Festival on the Harbor. You may wonder, where does that money go? Festival proceeds go to our capital campaign account to fund maintenance and to pay down the debt on our facility--NOT the operating account which pays the ongo-ing expenses of our church—we depend on stewardship to offset those operating expenses.

We ask those families who have not yet made a Stewardship Com-mitment for 2014 to please do so as soon as possible. Please con-tact the church office at (516) 944-3180 or [email protected] with any questions. We welcome your participation!

September Theme: I Believe. “Now I plead with you by the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions amongst you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same judgment.” 1 Corinthians 1:10

We hope everyone had a joyful and restful summer. It is hard to believe that September is already here and now we are ready to roll up our sleeves and once again work together as a team. Our first two meetings of the new ecclesiastical year will be held on Monday, September 8th and Monday, October 6th. All are invited to attend our meetings!

Loukoumades Booth at this year’s Festival on the Harbor. Please contact Tammy Ashley at [email protected] or by tele-phone at 516-965-3431. We need your help, and we welcome all to join us!

President Eleni Raptis and Tammy Ashley represented our Chapter at the Clergy Laity Conference held in Philadelphia from July 6th-9th. Marina Katsoulis also attended representing the DAD. The conference was very informative, and a report will be shared at our September 8th meeting.

We are planning a very busy year with visits to Holy Cross in Boston and All Saints Monastery in Calverton, as well as visits to Hellenos House, St. Basil’s, and St. Michaels. Look for more information.

Correction from July/August Trumpet: Many thanks to Christine Korakis for undertaking the reservations for our annual end of the year dinner held in June. Job well done!

Welcome back! We are fortunate to have the new school year, 2014-2015, upon us! With an enrollment thus far of more than 200 students, the Greek Language Institute continues to be a thriving facet of the Archangel Michael community. Attending our school is a special opportunity for our youth to study the Greek language and experience all that is unique to our Hellenic heri-tage and our Orthodox faith. Following the Agiasmo on Septem-ber 16th, the students will officially begin their studies. Our new bulletin boards, graciously donated by the PTA, will soon be filled with back to school works and OXI Day projects.

OXI Day is a national holiday celebrated on October 28th through-out the Hellenic world commemorating Greece’s entry into WWII. It is a day on which we remember Prime Minister Metaxas’ coura-geous one word response of “OXI!” to Mussolini’s demand for the unconditional surrender of Greece in 1940. The Italian forces immediately invaded Greece and the Greek army, which included grandparents and great grandparents of many of our AMC mem-

bers, counterattacked and forced the Italians to retreat. The world was grateful and impressed as indicated by the words of British Prime Minister Churchill, “Today we say the Greeks fight like heroes, from now on we will say that heroes fight like Greeks”, and those of President Franklin D. Roosevelt who said of the Greek Resistance, “The timeless character of the Greek was shining brightly for all to see: passionate, determined, and proud.” On the 28th of October ,1940, Greece, the template of Western civilization, shone bright.

Our best wishes to all for a successful school year!

Welcome back to Greek School! We hope everyone had an enjoy-able summer! And to the new families joining us this year, wel-come to our community!

As you enter the school on the first day of classes, please stop by the PTA table and become a member. After that, take a look at our new bulletin boards adorning the school hallways and class-rooms. We are thrilled that we can now proudly showcase the work of our children. We would like to acknowledge and thank Helen Bapis for coordinating the purchase and installation of the boards. You’ll also notice that the children will have their new Papaloizos books and workbooks this year - a direct result of last Spring’s “Greek Night Out” PTA event.

Members of the PTA work together to fundraise, host events, and provide our children with necessary items to enhance their Greek School experience. We highly encourage your membership and participation in the PTA. Membership enables you to have an ac-tive voice in our Greek School community. In the long run, we all

have the same goal...to provide our children with the best pos-sible Greek School education. So, let’s work together, and make it happen. Volunteer on one of our committees, lend a hand at an event, and you’ll see how just a small amount of your time makes a great difference! We look forward to working with you, and to a great 2014-2015 school year!

This year, we need a new Treasurer, to replace Patty Tsahas, who completed her term of office. Thank you for your service, Patty!

Welcome Back! Registration for our 2014-2015 Sunday School program has begun and we are looking forward to seeing you! On Sunday, September 7th, after the Divine Liturgy, you will have the opportunity to register your children for Sunday School and “meet and greet” their teachers. The Sunday School books and materials that will be used this year will also be available for your perusal. On Sunday, September 14th, Sunday School classes will begin. We will be doing something a little different with the seating of the students in the Church. Rather than having them assigned to specific seats by grade, they will sit with their families in Church until after the Holy Gospel reading. Following the reading, the students will be dismissed to their respective classes. We are looking forward to an exciting and wonderful year as we help our children grow in our Orthodox faith.

We would like to welcome our new and returning students to the Archangel Michael Preschool. Once again, the Preschool will be offering a Mommy and Me class, which meets once a week (be-ginning in October); a Toddler Class, which meets twice a week; a Nursery Class, which meets four days a week and Pre-K, which meets five days a week. Registration for our programs is ongoing.

In October, we will be busy making autumn trees with colored leaves while learning about Christopher Columbus. We will also be celebrating the feast day of St. Demetrios and OXI Day. The children are eagerly anticipating our annual Halloween Party and Parade, our field trip to Hicks Nursery for a hayride and pumpkin

picking, as well as our annual Halloween Fundraiser. Look for more information to come!

Pre-K children will continue to concentrate on letter and number recognition, reading readiness, and strengthening their fine mo-tor skills. Nursery children will be concentrating on the themes of family, colors, and learning to recognize letters and their names. They will also be introduced to numbers through songs. Our Toddlers will be settling down into a routine in a classroom setting. All classes will begin learning the Greek language through songs and finger play and will be introduced to music and body movement with Miss Cecilia.

For information, registration or for a tour, please contact the preschool at 516-944-3184 or [email protected]

Heartfelt thanks for the kindness and generosity of our amazing Youth Choir members and their parents. We now have two gor-geous love seat sofas and a refrigerator in our choir loft room! We will all enjoy the comfortable sofas and now be refreshed with bottles of cold water. The parental support of the Youth Music Ministry is very much appreciated. We would also like to thank the parents for the lovely walnut sheet music cabinet and el-egantly framed music poster! We feel truly blessed to have such a thoughtful Youth Choir family!

Both boys and girls, ages 8-12 and 13-18 are invited to become a part of Youth Choir. The instructional program for the 2014-2015 Ecclesiastical year is rich in worthwhile activities which include: learning about the music of our faith, participating in the Divine Liturgy, Federation of Church Musicians Conference Workshops and Hierarchical Liturgy, visits with the residents of Hellenos House, Saturday of Lazarus officiated by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Challenge Liturgies, caroling at assisted-living and nursing home facilities, Philoptochos Christmas Brunch fundraiser, visiting other Greek Orthodox Churches to sing the Divine Liturgy, Broadway theatre trips, pool party and the annual Musicale performances.

Welcome back to another year of Greek Dance at the Archangel Michael Church.

The Greek Dance Troupe was established in 1999 under the di-rection of Roula Zogopoulos. Our Troupe’s intention is to offer children an opportunity to come together to maintain and con-tinue our Hellenic traditions. Mrs. Zogopoulos creates a safe at-mosphere in which our young people are inspired to explore and learn about their Hellenic heritage through our rich dancing and musical traditions. Children who join our Dance Troupe possess a high level of commitment and drive.

The Troupe meets on Saturdays throughout the school year and welcomes children from Kindergarten through 12th grade.Class times are as follows:

Our annual Nameday Dinner Dance will be held on Saturday, November 8th at the North Hempstead Country Club. This year we will honor, with the Hellenic Thread Award, two in-dividuals who have served our AMC community faithfully and for many years: Eleni Raptis and Chris Neocleous. We look forward to another fun evening of good food, fellowship and dancing with music by John Papastefanou. Tickets will remain at $150 per person. More information to come!

The Consecration of our Archangel Michael Church has been scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2015 with Vespers to be held on the evening of Friday, April 24. A journal will be published to commemorate both this historic event and the celebration of our 35th anniversary. A commit-tee has been formed and historical information is being gath-ered. Further information will be circulated shortly. Participa-tion of all parishioners and business friends would be greatly appreciated.

We are pleased to announce that our Annual Archangel Michael Tom Zangas Memorial Lung Cancer Foundation 5K & 1K Run/Walk will take place on October 25th, at Christopher Morley Park, on Searingtown Road, Roslyn. Registration will begin at 8am.

Our event last year (see photos to the right) was a huge suc-cess both for our church and the Foundation. With the gener-ous donations of our sponsors and the great participation of our community members and friends, along with the support of the Foundation, the Church was able to raise $25,000.

The net proceeds from the Foundation were donated to United Against Lung Cancer, a charitable organization that funds can-cer research projects. They designated these funds as a grant to William Cheung, PhD, for his research assessing a specific

protein required for cancer cell survival and invasion, SRC, and testing whether blocking SRC activity is a viable treatment strategy for metastatic lung cancer. The 5K & 1K Run/Walk is a wonderful family event which brings our children, their parents, grandparents and friends together for a worthy cause. We look forward to your support.

SO START RUNNING OR WALKING TO GET IN SHAPE FOR THE 5K/1K!

“It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” (Gal. 2:20)

This year, Camp Saint Paul celebrated the 10th Anniversary of inspiring and renewing camping ministry to the young people of the Direct Archdiocesan District. This past July, more than fifty children from the Archangel Michael Church community stayed for at least one of the four, week-long sessions. The daily and weekly programs are packed with faith, fellowship, and fun on Bantam Lake in Litchfield, CT, providing opportunities for physi-cal wellness, outdoor recreation, and spiritual edification at all times. In learning about and living their Orthodox faith, camp-ers grow closer to Christ, to His Church, and to one another as they worship, socialize, and serve alongside their peers, with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, and under the direction of Fr. Elias Villas, Camp Director, other local cler-gy, and an incredible slate of young adults from throughout the U.S. who serve on staff. Please speak with Fr. Nikolas if you would like to learn more about this incredible ministry and to share your family’s experiences at Camp Saint Paul.

On June 12, 2014, The Archangel Michael Church held its 21st Annual Golf Outing, “The Watsonian”, at Plandome Country Club.

This year 106 golfers participated and enjoyed beautiful weather and a great day of golf and fellowship. The Awards Dinner and Cocktail Reception immediately following golf had over 145 guests, which included the many loyal sponsors, pa-rishioners and friends of the Archangel Michael Church.

The net proceeds for this year’s event were over $45,000, which will be used for the continued operations of the Church.

A heartfelt “thank you” to all those who participated and sup-ported this event.

Next year’s 22nd Annual Archangel Michael Golf Outing is scheduled for June 11, 2015 at Plandome Country Club. See you next year!
