Truth, someone has said, “is stranger than fiction”. Thesaying seems to apply fairly well to Shiva, the TruthPersonified, whose symbol is Shivlinga and whosedivine ‘birth-night’ is commemorated in India as Shivratri everyyear. So much legend, myth and fiction has been built up aroundShivlinga that the truth, that is symbol of the Supreme Souland that Shivratri is the festival in lieu of God’s divine andsupernatural birth, appears to people today as stranger thanfiction.

If we ponder over the meaning of ‘Shiva’, the word means:“One whose every act is aimed at Kalyan or benefaction ofthe mankind”. So, undeniably, ‘Shiva’ is an attributive nameof Almighty God. But there are such stories woven aroundHis name that they make Him appear as embodied being thatlived on Mount Kailash in the days of Yore!

Again, research work indicates that Shivlinga was, once, held in great esteem in all religions, including the Judaic familyof religions and Adi Sanatan Dharma. So, universal acceptanceof the symbol, in the past, also goes to show that it must havebeen regarded then as a symbol of the Father of the universe.Further, if we study the spectrum of forms of various deities,we find that Shivlinga stands apart from others because it isneither of male nor of female form as other idols are. This, too, shows that it represents the incorporeal God. But, in courseof time, this truth also was lost among myth and fiction likeShakespeare’s “two grains of wheat in two bushels of chaff”.

As time passed, people began to believe that God, beingthe Greatest Power, must be macrocosmic in expansion; theypaid scant regard to the testimony that He is microcosmic or

The ConfluenceAge or Sangam Yuga is veryincognito like the riverSaraswati, the third sacred riverwhich symbolizes the role of theGoddess of Wisdom. Thefestivities adhered to during thetwo months provide a wonderfulopportunity for all the differentpaths of bhakti to unite throughGod’s wisdom andunderstanding. This is sharedopenly and abundantly by thosewho have the recognition ofreality, and bring about SelfTransformation for WorldTransformation: 1) byrealizing and accepting theadvent of Incorporeal GodShiva and 2) following Hissupreme advice or Shrimatto divinize the self by taking7 dips in the Ocean of GodlyKnowledge, and becomingfully enlightened.

Her honourable cremation tookplace on 4th morning at Mount Abu in presenceof hundreds of Brahmins, including those whojoined from the Eastern Zone. Who am I? Whom do Ibelong to? What doI have to do now? What is this birth for? Keepthese searching questions andtheir true answers in your mindthroughout the day.

Each supreme version is ofimmense value and importanceand has to be imbibed. EachGodly version has its own powerand where there is power, thereis happiness. Listen to Baba’sversions every day and you willbegin to become equal to theFather.

To ask for anything is notsign of a royal soul. It means thatthe soul is not content. Whenthe intellect is connected to adesire, there is affection orattachment towards that desireand the intellect will remainconnected to that desire until itis realised. This happensbecause the sense organs are notunder our control.

There is a very deepconnection between the mindand intellect... Mind, intellectand sanskars have their ownorder. First we say mind –mind, then intellect and sanskarsand so bring this into yourchurning. Leave the senseorgans aside and just think aboutmind, intellect and sanskars.

CONQUER YOUR MIND AND YOUCAN CONQUER THE WORLD

(Rajyogini Dadi Janki, Chief of Brahma Kumaris,Mount Abu (from a class – 8th February 2013, Shantivan)

There is a song ‘When my mindis connected to Baba, it becomesso good that the sense organsdo not call out for this or that.

There have been many goodsouls who at the time of deathwish for something. They maynot have seen their son for awhile and until the son arrivesthey do not leave their body. Others remember a particulartype of food that they want toeat and only after eating that dothey leave their body.

At the time of shedding yourbody, there should be no desires. The only desire we should haveis for peace, happiness and love. The old body has to be shed anda new one taken and that has tobe practised now. Desiresdegrade a soul totally. It is as ifthe soul becomes a scavengerand then drowns... desiresdrown the soul.

In order to finish all desires,Baba has given us a lot ofsustenance through reality androyalty. Absorb only that intoyour heart. The mind will onlybe OK, when the intellect is OKand only then do the sanskarschange. If the mind goesanywhere the intellect will keepan eye on it, telling it not to gohere and there. A conversationtakes place between the mind,

intellect and sanskars. When thesoul knows deeply that it isBaba’s child and that factpenetrates the sanskars then thesanskars stop affecting theintellect - the sanskars can stopinfluencing and controlling theintellect. .

The soul sheds the body andtakes the sanskars with it. At thistime we make such effort on oursanskars that on one side, there isthe destruction of unrighteousnessand on the other the establishmentof one true religion ofrighteousness. When the religionis one of truth there is everythingin the world. The one whofollows the right path and ishonest with the Father will claimthe kingdom. Think about whatstatus you will claim in the future.

Always remain happy whilstsleeping, getting up, eating, drinking or taking a bath. Happiness is not for a temporaryperiod but for always. Happinessis the only true nourishment forthe soul.

Continually pay attention to‘always’. Never becomecareless. Leave the word “want”behind. The one who conquersthe mind will conquer the world.

Progress of society issome sort of change inits conditions. Changecan be called progress ordevelopment if it is in thepositive direction and leads tobetterment of human conditions.Social change is a universalphenomenon. Further, socialchange is a community changeand it will be called so only if itleads to change in society as awhole.

The factors that affect socialconditions are technological andscientific changes, advent ofnew ideologies and variations insocial and family values. Socialchange is an essential processbut the speed of social changeis not the same at all times. Wecan very well understand howeffective the technologicalchanges have been, commen-cing from the beginning of the20th century. Means ofcommunication have veryquickly and rapidly changedwhich have greatly affected the

    — B.K. Ranjit Fuliya, Associate Editor

social life. The newspapers, radio, television, mobile andtelephones have brought sea-changes in the ideology ofsociety. Man appears to haveconquered time and space. So,the old technologies have beenmodified, changed, or replacedby new ones. Likewise, newvalues modify, change orreplace old social values andthinking patterns.

It has been generally believedthat societies change fromsimple ones into complex ones. Many sociologists who supportthis theory stress that socialchange means progresstowards something better. Thisevolutionary view of socialchange was highly influencedby Charles Darwin’s theory ofOrganic Evolution. Eminentsociologist Auguste Comtebelieved that human societiesevolve in a uni-linear way, i.e.,in one line of development. Thesupporters of this theory seechange as positive and

beneficial. According to them, the evolutionary process impliesthat societies would necessarilyreach new and higher levels ofcivilization. They claimed thatthe races or societies that werebetter adapted to face theconditions of life had survivedand evolved. This view becamepopular as social Darwinism.CYCLICAL THEORY OF

SOCIAL CHANGECyclic theory is one of the

ancient most theories of socialchange. The supporters of thistheory believe that humansociety passes through certaincycles. For example, it has beenan ancient Indian belief thathuman race passes through acycle of four yugas—Satyug,Tretayug, Dwaparyug andKaliyug in a Kalpa.

Those who support cyclicaltheory of social change focuson the rise and fall ofcivilizations and attempt todiscover and account for theirpatterns of growth and decay. The chief exponents of thistheory are Spengler, Toynbeeand Sorokin.

Arnold Toynbee focused onthe key concepts of challengeand response in his famousbook, ‘A study of History’(1946). He opined that everysociety faces challenges and itwas the nature of responses ofthe societies to these challengesthat determines their fate. If

“By progress we imply not merely direction, but direction towardssome final goal, some destination determined ideally, not simplyby the objective consideration at work.” — MacIver========================================================

societies respond successfullyto the challenges, they achievea lot and advance; if they cannotrespond effectively, theyultimately die. So Toynbeebelieves that all civilizations willnot inevitably decay. Hehighlighted that if each newcivilization learns lessons fromthe mistakes and borrows fromother cultures, they can perhapshave higher level ofachievement. Toynbeeexpressed a very positive viewon Indian civilization:

The vast literature, themagnificent opulence, themajestic sciences, the soul-touching music, the awe-inspiring gods: It is alreadybecoming clearer that achapter which has a westernbeginning will have to havean Indian ending if it is notto end in the self-destructionof the human race. At thissupremely dangerousmoment in history, the onlyway of salvation for mankindis the Indian way.

An eminent Indianphilosopher and sociologist Dr.D.R. Sachdeva has opined thatno reliable principles about thenature of social changes andtheir long term tendency can beformed merely on the basis ofthe existing sociologicalknowledge. Is thecontemporary civilisation,

passing through the route ofinternal disintegration andnuclear wars, heading towardsdestruction? Or is it going to bereplaced by a higher, morecongenial and progressive socialsystem? On the basis of theavailable evidence, only thismuch can be stated that thedirection of social change willbe determined by man himself,Dr. Sachdeva has furtherasserted.

About progress, the learnedscholar has posed severalquestions as to whether wehave ‘progressed’ in the realsense of the term. According tohim, the contemporarysociologists no more considermere scientific andtechnological progress as a suresign of success. He opines thatthe issue whether we haveprogressed or not is based onour criteria of moral values.Earlier, people generallybelieved that we haveprogressed but now they pointout various drawbacks inconduct of human beings.Products and income of theNation have increased, but isthat progress? There have beeninvented fast modes oftransport, as aeroplanes, but hasthat enhanced safety of life?Has all the technologicaladvancement been able topromote health, happiness and

harmony? Despite all thedevelopment in the fields oftechnology, heavy industries andconstruction of dams etc., havepoverty, crimes, violence, diseases and lawlessnessdiminished? Politically we havebecome hypocrites, economically we have becomecorrupt, socially we havebecome frauds and morally wehave become bankrupts.

Keeping in view the abovesaid flaws of character, it cannotbe said that we have made anyprogress. Great thinkers likeMahatma Gandhi andAurobindo Ghosh had warnedhumankind about such moraldecay and degradation longback. However, Dr. Sachdevahas further opined that the real

assessment of progress is notpossible due to lack ofuniversally acceptableprinciples and parameters ofdevelopment. He has furtheropined that somehow, thechanges and developmentshappening in various fieldsshould not be stopped. Hehoped that there will be bettertimes for mankind.

    SHIVARATRI:SYMBOLIC OF SOCIAL

    CHANGEWe know that day follows

night and night follows day;seasons also have a cycle, sohas human life—birth, childhood, youth, old age, deathand again rebirth. Seeing allthese changes as a naturalphenomenon, we canunderstand that such changesmust take place at a larger levelalso. As revealed byIncorporeal God Shiva, thepresent world of consumerism,cut-throat competition, viciousness and dwindling moralvalues will be transformed intoa new world of values andvirtues, happiness and harmony, peace and prosperity. For thisgreat transformation, Godhimself takes a divine ‘birth’which is commemorated asShiva-Ratri in Hindu folklore. The present time is the mostauspicious period when Godincarnates on earth. It is called

Confluence Age or SangamYug, a small period of timebetween the end of Kaliyugand start of Satyug. It is themost important period in humanhistory, as it heralds an era ofawakening and enlightenment, awareness and exuberance, aptness and energy, abundance

    and ecstasy.MEDITATION–AN

    ENRICHINGEXPERIENCE

At the present auspiciousConfluence Age, ourbenevolent Lord, God FatherShiva has been teaching us theart of Rajyoga Meditationwhich means disciplining themind so as to enable it to staycalm, quiet and peaceful; awayfrom negative and waste

thoughts. In meditation, weforge our mental and intellectualcommunion with God throughpure, positive and lovingthoughts. When we stay in soul-conscious state, all actionsperformed by us are good, nobleand enriching the self as well asothers. By keeping attention onour personal conduct andbehaviour, we achieve the stageof equilibrium wherein there isno place for waste or negative.Automatically, there are greatopportunities of self-improvement, self-developmentand self-empowerment.

    MIND, MOUTH ANDHAND IN UNISON

Rajyoga is a means to bringperfect harmony among one’sthoughts, words and deeds. Wemust check whether these threefaculties of ours, i.e., Mind,Mouth and Hand are in unison. The importance of this unitystands highlighted even in SrimadBhagwad Gita. When ouractions are performed in theremembrance of God and withan attitude of being a servant ofmankind and a dear child of God,there can be no flaw in ourconduct and no disharmony withany human being.

The first requirement fortransforming the self is to trainthe mind for creating positive, meaningful and lofty thoughts. Ifwe want to be selfless,

The present time is themost auspicious periodwhen God incarnates onearth. It is calledConfluence Age orSangam Yug, a small erabetween the end of Kaliyugand start of Satyug. contented, generous andgiving, we must give particularattention on our thoughts.Understand it clearly thatthoughts are the seeds ofall our actions. If I want toachieve peace, plenty andpiety in life, my thoughtsmust also be matching:altruistic, abundant, advanced and amenable, always.

Next, we need to train theself so that our words aresoft, sweet and full of purefeelings. This can be possibleonly when we haveselflessness in us and purefeelings for one and all. If wehave selfishness within, ourwords can’t stay meaningfuland sensible. Accordingly, ouractions or deeds will also notremain exalted and lofty.Selfishness brings waste andnegative which hamperspiritual growth of theaspirants. On account of ourselfishness, we tend tocriticize and condemn others, scoff at them and don’t giveproper importance to them. Aselfish person may alsosuccumb to exaggeration, criticism, blasphemy, censureand condemnation. Theseweaknesses of characterdeprive us of our mentalpeace, composure and

    tranquillity.When we have selfishness

in our conduct and behaviour, our relationships with otherscannot remain smooth andconducive to mutual progress.Strained relations cause lot ofdisturbance in our propergrowth and advancement.Hence, there is an urgent needto perform good deeds, staying away from negativeand waste activities. This willhelp us have harmoniousrelationships, congenial to ourspiritual advancement andgrowth.

    BATHING IN THEBLISSFUL GLOW OF

    GOD’S LOVEIn meditation, the aspirant

concentrates his focus onGod’s qualities, His benevolentacts are always in his mindand the scenes andreminiscences of the gloriouspast and the forthcomingGolden Age always dancebefore his eyes. Sometimes heexperiences sitting in theblissful glow of the Soul Worldor the abode of peace andsilence, very much in the warmlap of the Ocean of Love, i.e.,God and deliberates diligentlyon His assimilative attributes.Staying always peaceful, calmand creative, he remainssuccessful in warding off

vicious, negative and wastethoughts, altogether. While inmeditation, he practises theprocess of creating elevatedthoughts and garners feelingsof goodwill, generosity andsympathy for all beings andparticularly for those who arein his constant and directcontact. Thus, a true aspirantbecomes an instrument ofsocietal change. At present, the divine act oftransformation of humanbeings is going on.

    BEING ANINSTRUMENT OF

    WORLDTRANSFORMATIONGod Shiva has been

performing this great task ofdivinising human beings, since1936, when He chose DadaLekhraj as His humanmedium, to disseminate thespiritual knowledge. DadaLekhraj was renamedBrahma Baba or the first man. This noble mission of bringinga benevolent change insociety is still going onwherein esteemed readersmay also participate. Theycannot only have a goldenchance to be the witnesses tothis vibrant transformation butalso become instrumental inmaking it happen.

It is said that with one eye, aperson can see twodimensions; with two eyes, three dimensions and with threeeyes, the person can see fourdimensions. Mankind today isnot aware of the third eye andthe fourth dimension. Manpresently is deprived of the thirdeye. Now, what is this thirdeye? Where is it situated andwhat is its function? Is it aphysical or a subtle organ of thebody?

In spiritual parlance, third eyeis a very subtle organ. It means‘soul-consciousness’. Fourthdimension is the spiritualdimension, which isunfortunately missing in thepresent life. Human being isconstituted of two parts, i.e.,Human + Being. In otherwords, human body is soil andthe Being is a spiritual entity, called ‘soul’. The soul is like ashining star, a point source oflight energy, situated in thecentre of the forehead. That iswhy people pray to God ‘to opentheir third eye or eye of themind’. Also, the saints advisethe people “Mann ki aankhenkholo Baba.”

    THIRD EYE

    – Late B.K. Prem Prakash, Shantivan

When our third eye is opened,we become aware of the innerself that we are immortal, imperishable and eternal soulsand not the perishable physicalbody. Then our thoughts, actions, attitudes become vice-less. Today, the entire mankindis out to commit sinful, irreligious and unrighteousactions because of beingspiritually blind. In one of theepisodes of Mahabharata,Draupadi calls Duryodhan‘Andhe ki aulad andhe’ i.e.blind son of a blind father’,though Duryodhan had twophysical eyes but was deprivedof the third eye of wisdom. When our third eye ofknowledge (wisdom) getsopened, we start spreadingvibrations of peace, happinessand bliss in the entire universeso much so that the fiveelements of nature that are veryfurious today and cause hugedestruction through Tsunami, earthquakes, floods etc.,become calm and peaceful. Onthe contrary when we becomebody-conscious i.e., when weforget about our true self, ourthird eye is closed with the

result that there is extremedegradation, irreligiousness andthe graph of lust, jealousy, arrogance, enmity and angeretc., rises rapidly. The soulsbecome polluted, weak and losetheir power of purity. Just as ablind man cannot see the thingsand enjoy the beauty of nature,a man without third eye is unableto enjoy the spiritual bliss andpeace.

It is said that when God Shivaopened His third eye, a hugedestruction took place. In fact, this has a deep spiritualmeaning. When the human soulsopen their third eye of mind, third eye of wisdom, their vicesget destroyed in the fire ofRajyoga, i.e., in powerfulremembrance of God Shiva.

According to one school ofthought, if both sides of pituitaryplexus are fully developed, onebecomes self-knowing but GodShiva is all-knowing (in Latin“all-knowing” is “omniscient”and in Sanskrit, it is‘Trikaldarshi’). Actually, it isHis omniscience through whichHe sees the three ages: past, present and future. When Godbestows third eye upon thehuman souls, they becomeMaster-Omniscient and theyare able to clearly visualise thepast, present and future of theworld.

Generally, human beings findthemselves unable to conquer

You were there with me, throughout my success andfailureYou stand for me against everything that harmed meYou protected me against everything that caused pain to meYou were there with me as a strong pillar,as a bravefatherBecause you are my inspiration……

As time passed you keep on inspiring me with yourexperiencesAs time made us two friends rather than father-daughterYou being the reason for me to move forwardYou being the great inspiration for me to enjoy my lifeYou are the one who made me realize the meaning of lifeBecause you are my inspiration……

Now you became old, audacious, calm, curiousEnjoying your way to the great destinationTo where you want me, to allow you to go aloneYou want me, to leave you alone in that journeyBut as long as I can breathe, my life is my token of loveto youWhich you can’t leave in this journey of lifeYour every step and move captivated me with divineenergyThat will go on inspiring me till my last breatheBecause you are my inspiration

Shivratri is the descent ofGod Shiva to protect thevirtuous and to transformhell into heaven or the goldenage of peace, prosperity andhappiness. This is God’spromise mentioned in C-4,V7-8 of the Gitawhich is consideredas the “jewel of all scriptures”.The original name of God isShiva who is remembered bypeople of all religions andlanguages. “Ratri” literallymeans night but it is symbolicof vicious times and in particularthe end of the Kalyuga whenpromiscuity, lawlessness andcorruption are rampant andpromoted by even those whohave been entrusted to upholdthe law as well as religion.

    GOD’S DESCENT:WHEN AND WHY?

God Shiva’s descent takesplace once in a kalpa or cycleof 5000 years and this occursduring the last years ofKalyuga, which is known asthe confluence age. Unique anddivine are the ways of God.When God descends, Heimparts spiritual knowledgewhich has the power to removespiritual illnesses of the soul

caused by the extremes of lust, anger, greed, attachment andego. This transformation ofsouls brings about the day ofenlightenment that is calledheaven. Only God has thespiritual power and knowledgeto change hell into heaven. Thetransformation of hell intoheaven is the mostauspicious event in worldhistory and its memorial iscelebrated as ShivRatri.

TRUTHS REVEALEDWHEN GOD DESCENDS1. FIRSTLY: God reveals thatthe soul is a tiny point ofconscient light, not visible withthe physical eyes. The Mind, theIntellect and the Memory arethe three subtle faculties of thesoul with specific functions.

The Soul-Conscient Light(i). The Mind is the thinking

faculty of the soul where allthoughts are created orgenerated. The mind imagines, thinks and formulates ideas onthe basis of all emotions, desiresand sensations. The mindprojects instant thoughts, relivespast experiences and evenanticipates the future. The mind

is a faculty of the metaphysicalsoul and is not to be confusedwith the heart, brain or matter.

(ii). The Intellect is thefaculty of the soul used toassess thoughts. This is thefaculty of understanding anddecision making based onthoughts. It is the intellect thatremembers, discriminates, judges and exercises its strengthin the form of “will power”.In the intellect resides the powerto reason and it is the seat ofyour conscience.

(iii). The memory, alsoknown as the sub-conscious orresolves, is the faculty thatrecords all the past actions andexperiences of the soul. It takesthe form of habits, personalitytraits, beliefs, values andinstincts.2. SECONDLY, only when thesoul is present in the body is thehuman being capable ofperforming actions. The soulwhile present in the body iscalled the charioteer. The bodytherefore is the vehicle orinstrument that allows the soulto perform actions. The body istemporary and perishablewhereas the soul isimperishable and eternal. In ahuman being, the soul is like thesoftware and the body is like thehardware. Without each other, nothing useful can be achieved.3.THIRDLY, God reveals thatthe soul has lost most of its

  • 15The World Renewal, March 2013

spiritual power at the end of thecycle or Iron Age because ithas been imprisoned by thevices of lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego. As mindand intellect are now under theinfluence of the five senses ofthe body, most of its actions arevicious creating a world oflewdness, promiscuity, corruption and immorality inextremes. This is because thesoul has lost its power to reasonas well as the power todiscriminate right from wrongrendering the intellect comatosewhile the conscience goes intohibernation. The mind becomesuncontrollable, restless andwayward like a bull in a chinashop. God explains that lust, anger, greed, attachment andego are the five main evils orvices and are known bydifferent names as Ravan,Maya, Satan and Shaitan or thedevil.

    METHOD TOCONQUER VICES

When God descends, Hereveals that the method toconquer the five evil spirits isto inculcate the virtues of purity, tolerance, contentment, humilityand detachment. To achievethis, one must attain self-mastery by becoming themaster over the five senses, authority over the fiveelements as well as to

conquer the five vices. Thisis known as renunciation of thevices.THE FIRST RENUN-CIATION:The first is therenunciation of body-consciousness. This means tohave the awareness of beingsoul-conscious and theconsciousness of being angelicin nature. Angels do not have aphysical body and hence theynever set foot on the ground. Therefore to become soul-conscious, increase yourpractice of remainingintroverted and you will beprotected from the harmfulinfluence of the negativeatmosphere. This is the firststep of renunciation.THE SECOND RENUN-CIATION: The second stepis the renunciation of theconnections or relations of thebody. The first connection of thebody is with the physical sensesof sight, sound, smell, touch andtaste. Therefore, a true aspirantmust attain mastery over thesenses. If any of the physicalsenses does not cooperate andcreates disharmony to the bodyfunctions, put it right at theearliest . Do not give them chanceto grow roots. The attraction ofeven one of the physical senses willdeny you the right of self-sovereignty or self-mastery.THE THIRD RENUN-

CIATION: The thirdrenunciation is the subtle andphysical relations of the bodysuch as dislike, attachment anddependency on bodily relations.Firstly, if you dislike anyone, then the defects or actions ofthat person will repeatedlydisturb, haunt and taunt yourintellect. Even against yourconscious wish, you willautomatically have wrong ideasabout that person in yourthoughts, words, and dreamseven if that person is right.Even in meditation orremembrance of God, thatperson will repeatedly appearon the screen of your mind, breaking your concentration.Relationship with that personwould be out of duty or forceand not love. Until those selfishmotives are fulfilled, the karmicaccount of opposing that soul inyour thoughts and actions willcontinue. The seed of dislikeis a royal form of a selfishmotive.THE FOURTH RENUN-CIATION: The fourthrenunciation is to renounceeverything wasteful andbecome powerful. Stopperforming sinful actionsbecause they bring sorrow tothe self and others and vitiatethe environment. Give up waste, idle and ordinary thoughts andactions. Renounce the subtle

  • The World Renewal, March 201316

and royal form of the vices.Don’t be careless whilespeaking, avoid gossip andmaintain royalty in conversation.

The karmic bondage ofattachment and dependencyas well as the account ofkarma is very deep. When youtake some temporary supportfrom another soul, or youmake someone the basis ofyour attainment, then, because your intellect isdependent on that soul, instead of you becoming free, the bondage of karma iscreated. Even if one givesfreely and the other one takesinnocently, a subtleindebtedness is created andthe intellect gets distracted.

    RENUNCIATION,MEDITATION AND

    YOGAThe basis of renunciation is

purity and this requires thepractice of Raja YogaMeditation described in Gita.

In scientific terms, meditation simply means themanagement of yourthoughts. It is to have theability to think of what you wantand when you want, withoutinterference from otherthoughts.

Yoga, therefore, is to haveconnection and to havedialogue or sweet conver-sation with the divine source

    of inspiration, whom manycall God.

BASIC STEPS OFMEDITATION AND YOGATHE FIRST STEP inmeditation is to withdraw fromexternal influences and theattraction of the senses.Secondly, contemplate on theInner Self as a child of theSpiritual Father in the form ofa tiny point of conscient light, radiating positive wave energy. The image of God isworshipped in the form of theShiva Lingam.

The Jyoti Shiv LingamThirdly, concentrate and

focus your attention onSupreme Being and experiencedivine energy flowing into yourInner Being. Finally, recognizewhen the practice becomesreal and you get thatexperience of being with theFather.

Meditation and yoga togetherwith renunciation are the truthsrevealed by Incorporeal GodShiva, during Shivaratri, and thepractice of this spiritualknowledge to conquer the fivevices and the senses is calledthe Dance of Shiva also knownas Nataraja or the CosmicDance.

We all know that whenwe sit in meditation,we go into silence ofthe mind. We try to ward offall vicious, negative and wastethoughts. We connect ourselveswith God’s personality throughelevated and loving thoughts. Infact, we are training ourselvesto avoid vicious, negative andwaste thoughts throughdetermined focusedconcentration on God and Hisattributes, His acts, His abode, the new world of Heaven, thesubtle world and so on. In spiteof all these efforts, we all knowthat we have not beensuccessful in avoiding vicious, negative and waste thoughts. Our efforts are constant. However, we are able to prolongthe duration of entertainingelevated thoughts.

However, at the level ofwords, deeds and relationships,we have not been makingconcerted efforts to trainourselves to utter only wordsfilled with soft, sweet, and purefeelings. Similarly, we are alsonot focusing on restricting

    STRENGTHEN THEPOWER OF SILENCE

ourselves to good deeds andavoiding waste activities. Thecase with relationships is alsonot satisfactory. At times, wedevelop relationships which arenot elevating or beneficial to ourwell being. An attempt is madeto discuss these areas in briefas follows:

OUR WORDSJust like we create specific

time to train the mind duringmeditation, we do not plan fordisciplining our words. Eventhough we normally say that weshould speak softly, sweetly andlittle, many a time, it may not beso. Humour is good, butsometimes, humorous talk maycross the limit by disrespectingand hurting the feelings ofothers. Our words may alsosometimes give sorrow toothers. Sometimes, we mayutter taunting words and beataround the bush. Sometimes,we speak so loudly that ourwords become a nuisance toothers. We disturb others andalso the peace in the vicinity.

OUR DEEDSWhen we get down to the

field of action, we may not haveclose observation of our ownactivities since we areimmersed in the field of action. The action itself is influencingus, the people in oursurroundings and those who areconnected to the activities areinfluencing us and theatmosphere is also influencingus. Amidst all these, we shouldhave close watch on ouractivities. Otherwise, there ispossibility of our deedsbecoming misdeeds, negativedeeds or waste deeds. It istherefore, necessary for us toobserve ourselves closely to seethat whether we are mentallyprepared with satisfaction to doa job.

OUR RELATIONSHIPSHuman being is a social

being. We come in contact withmany others. We shouldpeacefully coexist. We interactwith others. We developaffection with others. ‘Unitedwe stand and divided we fall’ isan age old adage. When wehappily and peacefully coexistwith others, we have the wealthof relationship. But, whenthere is strain in our relationship,it gives us uneasiness andburden. Such a relationshipbecomes a waste. Some of ushave the habit of developingrelationship with many peoplewhich may not be useful eitherto us or to them. The modern

communication system is usefulto us. But in many cases, themobile phones and electronicmails have added to thepromotion of wasterelationships. Peopleunnecessarily chat for hoursover phone and waste theirprecious time. Peopleunnecessarily establishrelationships through thesemedia, which are not at allrequired. Therefore, let us keepin mind that we select ourrelationships in accordance withthe directions of God.

After examining the wealthof words, deeds andrelationships and their differentdimensions of applications, realization comes to us that ourthoughts are behind our words, deeds and relationships. Hence,it is necessary for us to giveproper training to ourselves toavoid wasteful applications. Weshould review from time to timewhether it is necessary for usto utter a word, whether aparticular act is necessary, whether a particular relationshipis necessary. Since our aim inlife is to experience deep silenceof the mind, experience super-sensuous joy and to go awayfrom the world of sound toreach the Silence World to bewith the Ocean of Peace –God,this kind of self training is verysignificant.

    5. POWER TOTOLERATE

One of the greatest powersthat women, especially areendowed with or possess, is‘Power to Tolerate’.It is thepower to handle whateveranyone doles out to you. Ittests your patience how youreact to situations, people andthings and quietly handle themwith a relaxed mind.

Sometimes, situationsdemand patience andtolerance, especially when theother person is not sensibleenough to understand yourstate or plight. On the otherhand, here if we defy theperson, it won’t work.

Suppose you are travellingby train and the T.T.E.suddenly asks you to show yourticket...at the same timeanother passenger comesabruptly, to claim that it was hisseat .What do you do then? Ifyou are justified and the seatis rightfully yours, you wouldvehemently claim the sameasserting your point to the otherperson. It would be better ifyou refer the matter to the

T.T.E. and avoid anyaltercation. So here the needwould be to wield the powerto face, not tolerate.

In other words, we need todecide on the spur of themoment, when a particularsituation arises, whether thepower to tolerate is the needof the hour or power to face!

In quite another situation, ifyou have lost a dear one in yourfamily or acquaintances, youneed to develop this power oftolerance through silence andmeditation…and resignyourself to the fact that theDrama is fixed, preordainedand beneficial. One could say, what is the benefit drawn bylosing a precious soul…Babasays, this knowledge of Dramacould heal your deepestwounds with the passage oftime. So, it is here that powerto tolerate comes intobeing…seeing every scene atthe same time, as a detachedobserver!

As it is, if we have a clearintellect and mind, developedthrough intense ‘Yoga’ orsilence and the ensuing powers

of knowledge, purity, concentration, visualization; agood discerning self and alleight powers would come toplay in an emergedstate…there would be nolabour or difficulty in invokingthe same. All the eight powerswill act in cohesion with you, instinctively—such should beour state of mind, poised in astabilized state!! On the otherhand, if you are disturbed bythe hindrances coming yourway, you shall not be in anequipoised state.

Deity Durga is shown, adorned with all the weapons;the shell which is blown issymbolic of churning of divineknowledge. The other weaponslike sword, trishul,

Swadarshan Chakra isused to kill the demons whichare representatives ofvices…likewise, her vehicleLion is symbolic of becomingfearless.

    6. POWER TOCOOPERATE

The Power to cooperate isthe combined result of allpowers. It requires the leaderor anyone wielding the power,to be free from all the vices likeLust, Anger, Greed,Attachment, Ego and theirprogeny – Jealousy, Envy, andLaziness/Lassitude. For thecompletion of a task,

    (Contd. from Feb. 2013 issue)

    THE EIGHT POWERS

cooperation and coordinationare the prerequisites. Therefore, our divine virtuesmust override the vices. Lookat our Dadis; how they worktogether in unison, handlingevery situation, dealing withevery matter peacefully andefficiently. As Dadi Janki oncesaid, “I love Baba...as Baba’sgift of love is an eternal gift tome”. Where there is truthfuland honest heart, Baba willhelp you at every step. Youstep one step forward; youwould receive thousand stepsof Baba’s extended hand ofcooperation, thus, all yourtargets and goals would befulfilled with Baba as yourconstant companion. And aswe all know, where there ispurity, there is peace andwhere there is peace, love, happiness and bliss wouldautomatically flow your way!

If you have the abilities andqualities of leadership, youwould try not to antagonizeanybody–build a congenialenvironment at place of work.Such people have theability tobe flexible, resilient and able toadjust to varied situations andall types of people.7. POWER TO LET GO

This is the power to do awaywith what is destructive, useless and wasteful. It is the

power to let go of things andhold nothing of the past in myheart; no future worry too. Itis the strength to say ‘no’ tonegativity or any temptation. As you may be aware, thereare mainly four types ofthoughts, 1.Negative thoughts,2. Waste thoughts,3.Necessary /ordinarythoughts, 4.Positive thoughts. One needs to analyze andcheck the nature of thoughtsprevalent in a particularsituation. Negative and wastethoughts are rooted in vices–Anger, Arrogance, Lust,Greed, Attachment etc. Suchthoughts lead to all healthproblems, as they collectunwanted toxins within ourbody…Sometimes we thinkwaste about how a person hashurt us or wronged us; for long...As a result of which wedevelop tension and stress. Therefore, if you put a full stopto your waste thoughts, youwould experience a relaxedstate of mind; otherwise theytake a heavy toll on yourhealth...

To let go of things requirepatience, courage, trust, forgiveness along withaccepting the Truth. As weknow that it is not easy toforgive someone who has beenunjust to you …This Power is

closely linked with Power toWithdraw. It means keeping noexpectations from othersbut,‘behad ka vairagya’,unlimited disinterest. Thus, itcompels me to finish anyattachments to the mundaneworld. I am required to LETGO of ego as well.

    8. THE POWER TOFACE

The main attributes of thispower are truth, courage andhonesty. The power to facemeans, to fear nothing whilehandling a situation, to pacifyyourself, assuaging your fears,“I’m more dangerous thandanger” (Like a fearlessTiger). It deals with Truth. Theperson, who wields theformidable power of Truth, possesses this weapon inabundance.

The Power to FACE isruthless and does not in anyway, accommodate untruth orcorruption, whether within ourown character or in externalsituations, no matter what thelevel of fear involved. Becausethis power sits opposite thePower to Tolerate, this bringsa balanced approach in dealingwith others. It enables us todeal with difficult peoplesqueamishly, sagaciously. It isnot aggressive, but it isassertive and powerful.

The advent of theeffulgent light of God asa supreme father, teacher and satguru in my lifebrought a U turn and changedmy perception to look at thethings, people, relations, situations, actions and reactionsabsolutely. My Supreme masteris an Alchemist who has thepower to transform a shell intoa diamond, a pauper into aprince, and a vicious person intoa deity. He is the script writer, director, and main actor of thisWorld Drama, His magnum-opus. He has bestowed me witha divine insight to understand thescenes and sights of this dramaand now when I retrospect mylife, I can affirm with convictionthat each incident, big or small,is pre-scripted, predestined andwhatever is happening here, carries a reason though toosubtle to be seen by our physicaleyes.

BACKGROUNDAfter my MBA, I joined one

of the top pharmaceuticalcompanies as MarketingExecutive in 1998 andhappened to meet B.K. RamGopal (Rama Bhai) who

    “ON MY JOURNEYTO HEAVEN”

    – B.K. Ramesh Challa, Milpitas, USA

inducted me into this companyand even today, I feel gratefulto him for the valuable lessonshe gave to me which proved agreat help for a very successfulcareer that followed. I wasblessed with my first kidSavyasachi (name of Arjun) inDec. 2000. Then we bothshifted to different companiesand later, Rama Bhai migratedto Canada. In the year 2007, Igot a lucrative job in USA andby a Divine Design, Rama Bhaitoo moved to USA fromCanada. In 2009, I was blessedwith a second child, a baby boywhom I named Panch Janya(the conch shell). We (RamaBhai and I) had nocommunication for years butone fine Sunday, as a pleasantsurprise, I received a phone callfrom him and I could neverimagine that it was going to bean awakening call to alter thecourse of my life altogether. Iwas born and brought up in aHindu family, in an agriculturalfamily of a village in AndhraPradesh (India). My elderbrother and I often visitedtemples and enjoyed the

festivals especially the Diwali, the Dushera and the Pongal.

    MY QUEST FORKNOWLEDGE

As my parents were nothighly educated, I was notinterfered by them, theirexpectations and indulgence, and grew up into a brightstudent. I developed a habit ofreading at very young age andI would read whatever camemy way — Telugu translationof the Ramayana, theMahabharata, detective stories, novels, suspense thrillers andalso books by the writers likeMahatma Gandhi,Vivekananda, and Abdul Kalametc. I also read many otherwriters like Dale Carnegie,Stephen Covey etc. for self-development. “Autobiographyof a Yogi” by Parma HansaYogananda awakened thespiritual being within me. Therewere questions always floatingin my mind; “Who am I?”,“What am I here for?” Forfinding answers to thesequestions, I tried Kriya yoga butcould not continue this yoga forlong as I got busy chasing mycareer. However, I continued tosearch for peace and happinessin the material success.

    CALL FOR THEAWAKENING

In 2009, I was out of job fora few months when the second

kid Pancha Janya was born. Ionce again started spending myfree time in solitude in a nearbytemple, invoking the longforgotten spiritual questions. Itwas perhaps the time in theWorld Drama to have a newbeginning in my life. In April2011 on a Sunday afternoon, thedivine brother Rama called me.As I realized later, that call wasnot at all an ordinary call; it wasintended to serve a definitepurpose. We started theconversation very casually andI was told that he was drivingback to Virginia fromWashington DC after attendinga meditation class. He addedthat it was his weekly routineevery Sunday and he would feeluneasy if he missed the class. Iwas a bit surprised to know thatthe whole family was driving160 miles on every Sunday toattend a meditation class! Wow!Unbelievable! I was curious toknow why he was doing that.He said they were practisingRajyoga meditation for manyyears and through which theywere able to experience realpeace and happiness. The twomagical words “peace andhappiness” caught my attention. While gathering more details onthe call, I browsed the net in mylaptop to find the nearest centerin my city. I found there was a

center in Milpitas which was just12 miles away from my homein California. I shared the samewith Rama Bhai, and then hesaid very instantaneously “youare so lucky”. He really meantthose words. I can still feel histone filled with excitement. Heprobably would go every day ifhe had the center so close like Ihave here.

I called up the centerimmediately and I had to leavea voice message. Aftersometime, my call was returnedby an angel. It was sisterKusum on the phone who said“Om Shanti.” I gathered therequired information and gotmyself enrolled for the RajyogaMeditation Course.

    DISCOVERING MYTRUE IDENTITY

Soon after I joined theRajyoga meditation, the mysterybehind the questions disturbingmy mind like “Who am I?” etc.,was very beautifully andconvincingly unfolded to me. Igot revelations about myself,The Supreme Being, the godsand the goddesses and theworld drama very clearly. I readtwo books, ‘New beginnings’and ‘Adi Dev’ as suggested bySis. Kusum. I wasoverwhelmed to read aboutBrahma Baba who set animpeccable example for all of

us to follow in his footsteps andI started attending the Murliclasses regularly and took allcare not to miss any chance forservice as I had prayed to Babato provide me opportunity forservice.

    MY FIRSTPILGRIMAGE

It was only three months inmy spiritual journey, and Inoticed a significant change inmyself. One Thursday eveningwhen I was in meditation priorto Murli Class, I had a thoughtto visit Mt. Abu and expressedmy uncontrollable desire to visitMadhuban to Sis. Kusum, whowas kind enough to understandthe intensity of my desire andinformed Madhuban and madethe necessary arrangements. Iwas visiting India after four andhalf years. I journeyed direct toMt. Abu as I wanted to visitBaba’s Home first before goingto my biological family. On 20thJuly 2011, I stepped inMadhuban, the land of honey –the only true pilgrimage placeexisting on this planet.

    MEETING WITH THEANGELS

I spent three days in Mt. Abu.I met such a large gathering ofBK Brothers and Sisters for thefirst time. It was like angelsmoving on the earth. I felt like Iwas watching the trailer of the

Golden Age. Everyone appeared to have a definitive aimand objective yet maintaining the peace and harmony.Everyone was so loving and cooperative and I felt verycomfortable and it was like visiting my own home. Babaalways shows special love for a new-born in this divine family. It was so true in my case. I felt so much care and lovewherever I went and whoever I met in the B.K. Family. Onthe second day early morning after Amritvela (Nectar Time),I experienced the magic of the place when I sat near theTower of Peace (Shanti-Stambh) for 30 minutes. I felt solight, calm and serene. Rest of the time I was busy visitingall the places in Mt. Abu. The most exciting part happenedthat evening. I was supposed to handover toli (sweets) fromMilpitas Center to Dadi Janki. I was not sure if I couldreally get a chance to meet Dadiji. As I said, Baba wasshowering special love on me. I got the permission to meetDadi in the cottage at Gyan Sarovar. I was excited and a bitnervous too. I was just three-month old as a B.K. and wasabout to meet the administrative chief of the BKs. and alsothe most stable mind in the world. Dadi was about to retirefor the day and I was the last visitor. I entered the room butI felt strained and a bit unnerved to meet such an importantperson. But suddenly, in my heart of hearts, a question arose:Do we ever hesitate to meet our own grandmother? Do weneed any preparation for it? The answer was ‘NO’. That’swhat aroused confidence in me. Everything was perfectnow and I briefed Dadi about the purpose of my visit. Shegave me blessings and ‘toli’. I had watched a few videos ofDadi before and now when I met her in person, I cannot putmy feeling in words. It was a wonderful experience to cherishin my memory forever. All I felt was a strong desire to get achance to meet her again.

On the day I was leaving, I sat in Baba’s remembranceinside the hut for few minutes and then I wrote a letter toBaba offering myself as an instrument for any kind of service.I truly did not anticipate at that time that a simple prayer ofmine would lead to the most amazing and exciting events ofmy life in this wonderful eternal drama.

This happened whenDada Lekh Raj, a wealthyjeweller and diamond merchantwith his business in Calcuttawas attending the spiritualdiscourse by his Guru at hisresidence. When Dada movedto his room in the midst of thediscourse, his daughter-in- lawRadhika followed him. WhatRadhika witnessed is the mostimportant incidence of thisKalpa. She saw the room filledwith red light and Dada’s eyesglowing like red bulbs. Anethereal voice said:“NijanandaswarupamShivoham, Shivoham;Gyanaswarupam Shivoham,Shivoham;PrakashaswarupamShivoham, Shivoham”.It meant: “I am blissful self, Iam Shiv, I am Shiv; I am

Soon this congregation(Satsang) became famous as“OM MANDALI”. Somewealthy families of Sindhsurrendered themselves to thisMandali. Around 400 aspirantsstarted staying in the Mandali.Boarding and educationalfacilities were established in

Karachi for children who weregiven personal care for their all-round development. The Godlyversions uttered by the Supremethrough Brahma Baba came tobe known as “Gyan Murli”.When some of the aspirantsasked about clarification ofsome points of Murli after thedeparture of Shiva Baba,Pitashri Brahma Baba used toexplain that these points wererevealed by the Ocean ofKnowledge and He only canclarify them.

Dada Lekhraj, the wealthyphilanthropist was prepared forhis new role of “PrajapitaBrahma” by the Supreme Soul,God Shiva through a series oftrans-visions : Vishnu ChaturBhuj appeared in trance anddeclared that Dada Lekhrajhimself was Vishnu ChaturBhuj; Dada had vision of worlddestruction through atomicweapons, natural calamities andcivil war. This was followed bythe vision of the new world ofparadise wherein he saw goldenstars descending on earth andturning into a deity (Devi orDevta). Dada was directed tobe the instrument for bringingthis heaven on earth. Dadawas now fully convinced that hewas the lucky soul chosen byGod, the Generator of Heaven

on earth, Operator of theheavenly kingdom ofVaikunthand Destroyer of theold degenerated world (hell).Dada Lekhraj readily acceptedhis new role granted by theSupreme Father, SupremeMother, Supreme Preceptor,Supreme Teacher, SupremeConsort, Supreme Companionand Supreme Child. He wentto Calcutta and handed overhis flourishing jewellerybusiness to his partner withinstructions to send his shareto Sindh where Dada Lekhrajspent his time entirely onspreading Godly knowledge.

Thus, Dada Lekhraj was fullytuned for his great role of beingthe Chariot of God, theincorporeal. Devotees of LordShankar worship Brahma asNandi, the bull being the divine

vehicle of lord Shiva–Shankarin temples dedicated to Shiva-Shankar. In devotion both Shivaand Shankar are consideredsynonymous.

However, incorporeal pointof divine light, God TrimurtiShiva, the Ocean ofKnowledge has revealed thatHe is ever incorporealmeaning that He does not havecorporeal or subtle body of Hisown while Shankar has hisown subtle body. God Shivaresides in Paramdham(Supreme Abode) whileShankar resides in subtleworld. Shankar is considered

as destroyer of the old worldwhile God Shiva is theGenerator, Operator andDestroyer through the subtledeities of Brahma, Vishnu andShankar respectively. That’s

why GOD is calledTRIMURTI SHIVA. God’srole in the current cycle of theeternal World Drama ispresented graphically in thepicture.

This picture reveals thatincorporeal God Shiva, thepoint of sentient spiritual lightincarnates in the body of DadaLekh Raj in 1936 and throughthis medium reveals trueknowledge about God, theSupreme parent, about humansouls, the children of SupremeFather Shiva who does nothave any father and SupremeMother Brahma who does nothave any mother. PrajapitaBrahma played his corporealrole from 1937 when hededicated all his movable andimmovable property to the trustof mothers and virgins headedby Jagadamba Saraswati wholater came to be lovingly called“Mamma”. Prajapita Brahmabecame the embodiment ofGodly knowledge (Gyan),Rajyoga meditation (Yog),inculcation of divine virtues(Dharana) and Service (Seva)of fellow souls. These are thefour pillars that sustain theBrahmin life during theConfluence Age.

The most important teachingsof the Supreme Teacher are

  • The World Renewal, March 201326

the true knowledge about God, about human souls, about theeternal World Drama, and about the Law of Karma (Law ofaction and reaction). The pictures of the eternal drama and the77th Shiva Jayanti reveal the eternity of the creation, and its cyclicrepetition every 5000 years. The role of God in the current cycleis still on after the ascension of Prajapita Brahma on 18-01-1969through the medium of angelic Brahma and Dadi Hriday Mohini. This role is soon going to finish with the birth of Brahma’s soul inthe new world as Shri Krishna, first prince and JagadambaSaraswati as Shri Radhe, the first princess of the new world.Radhe and Krishna will be ruling Golden-aged Bharat as empressShri Lakshmi and emperor Shri Narayan after their marriageand coronation.

All the events related to 77th Shiva Jayanti are repeated inevery Kalpa (cycle of the eternal World Drama) after 5000years, and this cycle goes on eternally as shown in the Picturebelow.

It is the bounden duty of every B.K.(Brahma Kumari andBrahma Kumar) to take this true story to every soul in thecreation so as to avoid any complaint about their ignoranceabout God Shiva’s incarnation on earth to re-establishVaikunth (paradise). When this task is accomplished bydiligently following Brahma Baba’s example, transformationof the world through self-transformation is assured. Let’sstrive to become Master Brahma and fulfil God Shiva’s missionthis year.

It hurries past so fast that wecannot hold back even thefraction of a second. It isever changing and so are theentities of this world, no matteranimate or inanimate, i.e., days, weathers, seasons, men, birds, beasts, trees, flowers and so on.The stream of time is flowingon and on incessantly, notpausing even for a moment. Fillone bucket of water from aflowing river; you can’t get thesame water if you go to fill itagain. Time changes andchange is the universal law ofnature. So nobody can defy thestrictures laid down by thismiraculously invisible powercalled nature or you are atliberty to address it by anydenomination that pleases you.

No wealth of the world isadequate enough to buy backthe past moment. A monarchcan mind the world and isempowered to command it tohalt and standstill but is utterlyhelpless to hold it on just forone-off.

The unavoidability of thisadvance movement of timeworks wonder by addingnovelty, variety and beauty thuskeeps life interesting. It makes

    AGING GRACEFULLY

    — B.K. Rajbala Singh, Powai, Mumbai

an infant bloom into a child, achild into an adolescent and anadolescent into a young manresplendent with charm, energy, zeal and zest. There is nodenying the fact that youth isthe prime of life when man isbeaming with energy to thebrim and is on the cloud ninewhen sky is the only limit to hisambitions. But again, how longcan you hold it in your grip? Youcan delay the process a little bitthat too by putting unusuallyassiduous endeavour.Ultimately, it will slip from yourgrip like sand because flowingon and on, unbridled andunrestrained, is the nature oftime so in a natural course oftime, each living organism isbound to grow old from youngwhich is as spontaneous aspassing through other stages oflife like from womb to birth, infant to child and so on. But Iwonder if we are happy withthe whole growth process thenwhy should we welcome the oldage with gloom and doom? Whyshould we not take it on thechin? Why should we whineabout it?

According to psychologicalstudies, the distinguishing markof a normal person is that he

lives in the present and acceptsthe fact coolly. But alas! Mostof us are escapists especiallywhen it comes to aging. We arenot ready to come to terms withit because the fear of inability, debility, futility and monotonyassociated with old age shudderus since we plan everything likeour education, profession, marriage, children, house etc.,we plan for all othercontingencies but how ironicalit is that we have no plans forold age which is a surety.

‘All is well that ends well’.Keeping this proverb in mindwe must try our level best tomake our old age beautiful sothat we may die peacefully.Hence, we are required tofigure out some objectives forthe post retirement period whichwe are going to face inevitably, escaping from it only on onecondition; if we die young, againan enigma.

We are potent enough to fightout this fear-generating-old-age-syndrome, and make itcounterproductive if we aredetermined to live our lifecheerfully and meaningfully tillthe last moments of life. Peaceand happiness are the greatestwealth and our birth right too,but how sad that today we havelost this invaluable treasure andinflicted our old age withdullness, dejection and rejectionand the only reason behind thispredicament of ours is ourevasive, pessimistic attitude

‘Time and tide wait for none’.

towards the culminating periodof life which, if utilised well, will prove of great worth to ourfamily, in particular and to thesociety in general, we areindebted to.

Instead of whining about theold age which is advancing onus head-on, let’s welcome itgracefully by planning it wisely. The first and foremost principleto start with is, prepareourselves to face it while weare young and ponder abouthow to keep ourselves activelyengaged in some meaningfulpursuit. For this purpose, wemust be cognizant of ourwinning strokes and also cuttingedges, our strengths andweaknesses, our abilities alongwith our incapacities. Weshould have sound retirementplanning and if we arefinancially secure, we shouldlook for some job preferablysome honorary work for thebenefit of the society becausethe post retirement period is thethird stage of life according tothe Indic Culture i.e., theVaanprasth Ashram when ourliabilities are almost over andthe time is apt to return to thesociety what we have receivedfrom it so far. Develop somegood hobbies and pursue themwith consistency to make yourleisurely advanced ageinteresting. Reading and writingare quite enriching andenlightening. If possible, joinsome good organisation where

you can get the company oflike-minded people to communewith.

Spirituality can be a greathelp to provide meaning to lifebecause it has the potentials toalter drudgery into revelry andmediocrity into excellence. Butspirituality is an attitude whichcannot be created overnight;rather it is a gradual evolution. The realisation that ‘I am a soulnot a body, soul is a consciousenergy which is immortal, transcending the barrier of timeand space. This body is a garbgiven to me in order to enact aparticular role in perfectsynchronization with my karmicaccounts. I am the maker of mydestiny. Nobody on this earth, not even God, the Almightymakes me happy or sad. It isall what I choose to be. This lifeconsisting of years, months, days, minutes and seconds, isgiven to me to make the mostof it and whatever I do, decidesmy destiny since each of us isimmovably shackled by theCause and Effect Theory underwhich we are at liberty to dowhat we feel like but we arenot free to choose the outcome. However hard we may try butthere is no way out to divert thereaction of any action. This isall the gist of spirituality whichis acceptable to all acrossnations, religions, cast, colourand creed. Each mother mustinfuse the child with thisattitude. This attitude once

developed, is going to yield richdividend all through life.

If life is lived with sincerity, commitment and accountability,it makes life blissful andcontented in totality inclusive ofpast, present and future. Theneach moment of life is repletewith meaning and a purpose. Then nobody is scared of oldage, thinking it a phantom ratherlooks at each upcoming momentas fulfilling and joy abiding, thusage gracefully. This is sobecause basically we are notbody but soul which nevergrows old and why on earth weshould grieve if we have lost thephysical energy and stamina weonce were proud of as we haveaccumulated an invaluablyprecious treasure of experiencewhich can guide the youthful, indecisive, rash energy of theyoung generation in order tokeep the social structure wellbalanced and radiantlyrestrained. The only credentialsrequired are, unwillingness togive up, an unyielding spirit inthe face of odds and an urge tolive enthusiastically likeVictorian poet Tennyson’sUlysses who despite being anoctogenarian king, is adamantlyreluctant to idle away his timeamidst palatial pleasures and isresolved to explore newhorizons more and more, whoseinvincible spirit is bent upon tostrive, to strife and not to yield.

We all Indians say withpride – ‘My India isgreat’. Why?Because of its unique culturalheritage, its unity in diversity,it’s being largest secularistcountry and so on. Moreover, large number of gods andgoddesses worshipped withlots of dedicat ion anddevotion are symbolic of itsglorious past. India is alsocalled great because here somuch regard and respect aregiven to women. That is whyin most of the cases, thenames of goddesses arepronounced before their malecounterparts , e .g. , ShriLakshmi-Shri Narayan, ShriRadhe-Shri Krishna, ShriSita-Shri Ram and so on.‘Yatra Narayastu PoojyanteRamante Tatra Devtah ,which means ‘Where womenare respected, gods dwellthere’ carries the essence ofIndian culture.

However, it is great ironythat today, in the same greatBharat , the securi ty ofwomen has been under greatthreat . Today’s Indian

woman has been undergoinggrave problems such asfemale foeticide, domesticviolence, gang rape, molestation, eve teasing, dowry, child marriage toname a few. It is unfortunatethat today’s Indian womanwho works round the cornerto fulfil all her duties, whetheras a housewife or as aworking woman, is goingthrough these traumatizedproblems every day. For awoman, it is rightly said thatshe is the first guru of manas she gives birth to him, yetit has been noticed that in thepresent so called modern era, women are usually found allalone to suffer in their badtimes.

The innumerable cases ofrapes and other atrocitiesreported recently againstwomen have put their dignityat stake. The whole nation isunder great shock anddismay. The way ‘Damini’, amedical s tudent was sobrutally gang raped in arunning bus in Delhi last year, has left the whole country in

shock and agony. Shesuccumbed to her injurieswhich resulted
