Elvis who? was photographer Al Wertheimers response when, in early 1956, an
RCA Victor publicist asked him to shoot an up-and-coming crooner from Memphis.
Little did Wertheimer know that this would be the job of his life: just 21 years old,
Elvis Presley was as we now know about to become a legend. Trailing him like
a shadow, Wertheimer was given unlimited access to get up close and personal with
Elvis; even as the singer was seducing young women in dark hallways, he allowed the
photographer to record his every move. Wertheimer took nearly 3,000 photographs
of Presley that year, creating a penetrating portrait of a man poised on the brink of
superstardom. Extraordinary in its intimacy and unparalleled in its scope, Wertheimers
Elvis project immortalized a young man in the very process of making history. (Just
a month after he shot Elvis recording the Dont Be Cruel/Hound Dog record, it
became the fi rst ever to top all three Billboard charts.)

The phoTographerAlfred Wertheimer was born in Germany in 1929, came to America
and settled in Brooklyn as a young boy. He took an early interest in
architecture and design, which led him to Cooper Union, from which he
graduated in 1951. In the spring of 1956, a series of commercial assign-
ments for RCA Records led to a shoot of a newly signed singer named
Elvis Presley. Instantly impressed, Wertheimer devoted four months of
his own time to intensely shadow the young star. The result would be
the most intimate and candid look at the future legend ever recorded.
The conTribuTorsChris Murray has organized over 200 exhibitions of many of the
leading artists of our time, from Andy Warhol in the 1970s to Annie
Leibovitzs first exhibition in 1984. He is co-curator of the Smithsonian
Institutions exhibition Elvis at 21 and is the author or editor of over
a dozen books.
Robert Santelli is the executive director of the Grammy Museum and
former CEO / artistic director of the Experience Music Project. He is
the author of nearly a dozen books and a contributor to magazines such
as Rolling Stone.

and Norman Mailers Moonfire.

elvis & the Birth of Rock and Roll brings together Wertheimers most remarkable Elvis photographs from 1956, along with a selection from his historic pictures of the
star in 1958 as he was being shipped off to an army base in Germany. Though many
of Wertheimers photos of Elvis are among the best known, nearly half of the
photographs in this book have never been published before. Limited to a total of
1,956 numbered copies signed by Alfred Wertheimer, this volume is available
as a Collectors Edition (No. 2511,956), and also in two Art Editions of 125
copies each (No. 1125 and No. 126250), both of which come with a signed
silver gelatin print. Art directed by Josh Baker, and edited by Chris Murray, the book
also includes an essay by Robert Santelli, and stories by the photographer. Fans of
photojournalism, portraiture, and, of course, the King will covet this collectors volume.

When Elvis came to town on tour in 1956, chances are the concert posters were made by legendary Hatch Show Print, one of the old-
est working letterpress print shops in America. In business since
1879, Hatch reflects the history of American advertising and entertain-
ment. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the shop printed
posters for vaudeville and minstrel shows, circuses and carnivals, and
entertainers on world tour. From the 1920s through the early 1950s,
second-generation owner and manager Will T. Hatch created many of
the powerful woodblock images that helped define the look of country
music, including those used on posters for Minnie Pearl, Ernest Tubb,
and Bill Monroe. Rock-and-roll impresarios relied on the shops posters
to advertise musicians including Elvis on tour in the 50s.
For this collectors edition, TASCHEN could think of no better col-
laborator to join us in celebrating Alfred Wertheimers photographs of
Elviss seminal year than Hatch Show Print, which created an original
poster to open each chapter. Now owned and operated by the Country
Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Hatch was there when Elvis broke
onto the national stage, and the shop continues to create posters with
an irresistible vintage appeal while carrying on the mission of preserva-
tion through production.
Were using the same type that we used for Elvis 50 years ago. I mean, the exact same type. Elvis stands alone as one of the true articulators of rock and roll, American rock and roll. It changed the South, it changed people, it changed the shop, and all this boy wanted to do was sing into a microphone.

THEY CALLED HIM THE KING OF ROCK AND ROLL. Elvis Presley, the young man with the swiveling hips and sexy smile, the one who put the music on the map and un-
leashed a cultural revolution that changed the world. More a rebel than a royal, he rose
up against conformity and sneered at popular convention. He used music to punch a hole
through both poverty and prejudice. With those looks, that voice, and a bucking restless-
ness that made every song he sang an anxious statement about a changing America, he
blazed the path we were all bound to follow.
Until 1956 Elvis was hardly known by America outside the South, where for the past
couple of years hed been barnstorming with his band, melting girls hearts, testing the
laws of decency (at least thats what civic leaders and pastors claimed), and generally
remaking the arch and angles of American music. In January of that year, RCA Victor
Records, the New Yorkbased recording company that now had him under contract,
released Heartbreak Hotel, a shivering, seductive tale of primitive rock-and-roll angst,
and with it, The Year of Elvis officially began. Over the ensuing months, RCA released
more Presley singles all of them racking up record sales. Hollywood beckoned and Elvis
became a movie star. By years end, the young singer was a millionaire, rock and roll
had taken up residence on the pop charts, and Americas youth felt the tug of change and
the stirrings of freedom.
There with his camera to capture Elviss most precious moments those wed come
to cherish, thanks to the startling pictures he made was the photographer Alfred
Wertheimer. Though he knew next to nothing about this young singer when first assigned
the task of taking photos of Elvis except that he made an exceptional subject to shoot
Wertheimer would document his meteoric rise like no one else. The pictures are beautiful
and revealing, historic and artistic. They resonate with Presleys youthful passion, and
pose the question: If Elvis had not come along, what would have become of America?

and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, und das Experience Music Project
Museum in Seattle, Washington.

When I arrIved In the mIdtoWn manhattan loft to photograph Elviss rehearsal for NBCs The Steve Allen Show, he was in the corner of the studio, playing and singing gospel music on an upright
piano, as Junior Smith, his sidekick, gopher, and cousin watched over dutifully. Elvis would rather play music,
to get people to gather round quietly and not disrupt his focus or engage him in small talk. The next day
we would be off for a night of concerts in Richmond, Virginia, then back to New York City for the television
show the following day. Some conservative church groups were making a fuss about Elviss free style of
moving below the waist, so Steve Allens script was written to curtail any possible gyrations: Dressed in a
tux, Elvis would start singing Hound Dog to a live basset hound, and continue with a ballad. Finally, in a
debut that would help lead him into a successful acting career, he changed into a cowboy outfit for a comedy
skit, Range Round-Up, where he appeared as Tumbleweed Presley, with Imogene Coca, Andy Griffith,
and Steve Allen. Well, the strategy worked and The Steve Allen Show was able to keep the family television
night clean and beat the ratings for The Ed Sullivan Show on CBS.
