Kennecott Pit in Color

1- Bingham Open Pit Mine. [Salt Lake City], [c.1970] Color Photograph [40 cm x 50 cm] that is

attractively framed [44 cm x 54 cm] of an aerial view of the Bingham Mine. Image is in fine condition

with strong colors and contrasts.

Photo taken for a Salt Lake City engineering firm. The Bingham Canyon Mine is the largest man made

excavation in the world.

both. Nice contrasts.

Eureka Utah was a thriving mining town at the turn of the 20th century and was the financial center and

heart of the Tintic Mining District.

“1. Looking N.N.W. from the D.+ R.G. tracks near the Centennial – Eureka mine-dump in the Tintic District

– Utah – at the fault-saddle marking a main ore-channel. Beyond the saddle, on the next (parallel) range

of limestone hills, is the Admiral – Farragut group of claims. To the left is the Gemini – Behind is the Blue

Rock, now being operated by the U.S.S.R. + N. Co. In the foreground, Eureka – Nov. 1922.”

“2. Looking N.N.W. at a Second Saddle, east of the one shown in View #1. Behind to the S.S.E. on the

same ore-channel are the ChiefCons., Eagle + Blue-Bell and Victoria shafts. Still further east is the parallel

N.N.W. ore-channel on which the American Star are operating and another on which is the Iron Blossom

– Nov 1922.”

Small albumen panorama [23 cm x 8 cm] Plain tan mount with an Ericson ink stamp on the reverse. A

few small spots to the image. Minor fading. Manuscript identification on the reverse.

Hydraulic mining image showing three men standing near the nozzle of a water jet.

Augustus William Ericson (1848-1927) was active as a photographer in Humboldt County and

surrounding areas, from the 1880s to the 1920s. His mining images are uncommon.

1890. Small albumen panorama [23 cm x 8 cm] Plain tan mount with an Ericson ink stamp on the reverse

and a ‘Ring and Goble’. A few small spots to the image. Minor fading. Bumped corners. Manuscript

identification on the reverse.

Augustus William Ericson (1848-1927) was active as a photographer in Humboldt County and

Sunnyside Utah Coal Miners

5- Panorama of miners at the Sunnyside Mine. Sunnyside, UT: Kaiser Steel Corporation, August 6th,

1951. Panoramic photo [50 cm x 20 cm] Minor rubbing and age toning to margins.

Sunnyside, Utah, was founded by the Whitmore brothers in 1889, and was a major coal producer in

Carbon County for nearly a century. In 2014 it was merged with neighbor East Carbon.

Hiawatha Utah Coal Miners

6- Panorama of day shift miners at the King Mine. Hiawatha, UT: United States Fuel Company,

September 6th, 1955. Panoramic photo [50 cm x 20 cm] Minor rubbing and age toning to margins.

For the first half of the 20th century Hiawatha was a booming mining town in Carbon County that was

run by the United States Fuel Company, at its peak it supported a vibrant Greek community.

Rare Iron County Mining Report

7- Newberry, J.S. Report on the Lands and Mineral Deposits Belonging to the Iron County Coal and Iron

Company of Utah. New York: E. Wells Sackett & Rankin, Stationers and Printers, 1882. First edition.

12pp. Octavo [23 cm] Yellow printed wrappers. Near fine.

A surprisingly detailed report of the coal lands and ore deposits of the Iron County Coal and Iron

Company. ICC&I was headed by Newberry and the prominent Utah citizens, John Sharp and William

Godbe. I can locate a single institutional copy. Rare.

California Mine Archive

8- 1880s collection of material related to the Owl Creek mining claim in Placer County,

California.

There are Thirty-nine pages of manuscript letters and notes, two mounted cabinet cards and a hand-

drawn map.

39 manuscript pages:

Pages [32 cm x 20 cm] are in three groups. Two of the groups [32 pages] are hand-copied duplicates of

letters between J.H. White, who owned Todd’s Valley Saw Mill and a half stake in the Owl Creek claim,

and career miner Felix Chapellet, Chapellet owned the other half of the Owl Creek claim and also owned

Live Oak Mining Co., The May Flower Co., and the Hawk Eye and the Wolverine Tunnels. The letters

concern the operation and progress of the Owl Creek claim, tunnels built, lumber for all of Chapellet’s

various claims, and discussion of White selling his half of the claim since he was not working it. The

second manuscript group of leaves [9 leaves] consists of notes on ranches and other properties in the

area in the 1880s with descriptions, including the Owl Creek claim. These would appear to be for a legal

case.

[19 cm x 12 cm] image on tan mount [23 cm x 18 cm] with a hand-stamped photographer’s mark (mostly

obscured). On the reverse in pencil in the upper left corner: “CLAMR – 9/13 – Placer Cty, Ca. Mining.”

Image shows four men operating a sluice between two small buildings/cabins. Minor overall soiling and

spotting.

[19.5 cm x 11.5 cm] image on a tan mount [21.5 cm x 13.5 cm]. On the reverse in pencil in the upper left

corner: “CRMCP – 9/13 – Placer Cty, Ca. Mining.” Image shows three men operating a sluice. Minor

overall soiling and spotting.

Hand drawn survey map [50 cm x 64 cm] in pencil of the Owl Creek claim, Hawk Eye, and Wolverine

Tunnel. Drawn by Anthony Clark in 1888. Map has some minor chipping and bumping to the extremities.

A corner damp stain. A paper repair to the reverse running the length. Pencil on map is faint.

Don Perceval Railroad Poster

9- Perceval, Don. Hopiland (Buffalo Dancer) [Chicago]: Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, c.1948.

Rail Road Poster [61 cm x 43 cm] Fine.

Attractive poster by the artist, Don Perceval, who first visited the Hopi mesas of northern Arizona in

1927, and later did a series of railway posters for the “Santa Fe.” Image and colors are bright.

Centennial Souvenir Fan

10- [Transcontinental Railroad] Souvenir Fan. Corinne: Sons of Utah Pioneers Railroad Village Museum,

[1969]. Three-piece fan printed on heavy card stock [25.5 cm x 18 cm]. Minor overall age toning.

Fan when fully opened shows the iconic A.J. Russell image of the laying of the Golden Spike at

Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869. Produced to commemorate the centennial. Fan courtesy of South

East Furniture in Sugarhouse. Groovy.

D&RG promotional piece that is illustrated throughout. Offers a short history of the settlement and

growth of Utah, and includes profiles of Salt Lake, Ogden and the Great Salt Lake. Contains some really

neat illustrations, including one of the tramway in Little Cottonwood. Not in Flake/Draper.

Denver & Rio Grande Playing Cards

12- Souvenir Playing Cards: Scenes and Descriptions of The Denver & Rio Grande Western and the

Western Pacific Railways. [Denver]: The Interstate Company, (c.1930). 52 cards that are housed in a

green cloth slipcase box that has the title gilt stamped on the front panel. A.E.G. Minor rubbing to

extremities of box with some splitting at the corners. All cards near fine.

Promotional item produced for the D&RGW. All 52 cards have a different photograph of views that one

might see while riding the D&RGW. Includes images of: Temple Square, Salt Lake City, Lucin Cutoff,

Castle Gate, Mesa Verde, Black Rock (GSL), Royal Gorge, Marshall Passage, gateway to the Garden of

the Gods. Colorado River through Glenwood, Feather River and Gold Lake.

Railroad Passes for Joseph F. Smith and Wives

for the Prophet Joseph F. Smith

and some of his wives and

children, nineteen in all. Salt Lake

City: Salt Lake, Garfield & Western

Railway, [1917] 19 annual rail

passes [15 cm x 11 cm] All passes

signed by the holder and dated by

hand. All are dated between June

8th and the 23rd of 1917. These

passes are numbered sequentially

(1-19). The passes where issued on

‘5/21/17’ All passes are near fine

with a vertical fold at the center.

Sold with a cabinet card of Joseph

F. Smith by C.R. Savage.

These are the Smith family summer

rail passes to Saltair, which was the

summertime social center for

Mormons in Salt Lake City and the

surrounding communities at the

time. The Salt Lake, Garfield &

Western was known as the ‘Saltair

Route.’ These passes where issued

two decades plus after the First

Manifesto, but because of the local

ownership of the railway (which

was founded by the LDS Church),

Smith is openly traveling with his plural wives, who are identified as such on their passes.

The names of the pass holders and their relationship to Joseph F. Smith is typed with the name of the

account, which is listed as Union Pacific R.R. Co. Joseph F. Smith is listed as the Director of the UPRR.

The pass holders are: Joseph F. Smith, Julina Smith (wife), Edna L. Smith (wife), Alice K. Smith (wife),

Mary T. Smith (wife), Emily Smith (daughter), Edith Smith (daughter), Marjorie Smith (daughter),

Jeannetta Smith (daughter), Asenath Smith (daughter), Emma Smith (daughter), James Smith (son),

Calvin Smith (son), Silas S. Smith (son), Samuel L. Smith (son), Agnes Smith (daughter), Royal Smith (son),

Andrew K. Smith (son), Fielding Smith (son).

Blasting Through the Canadian Rockies

c.1914. Four large format photographs [21 cm x 16 cm] on light brown mounts that have Hilmo’s name

blind stamped at the lower right corner [29 cm x 25 cm] Mounts are slightly curved otherwise fine

Four large mounted photographs documenting the construction of the Canadian Northern Railway. Two

of the images show blasting the path of the proposed route through mountainous and rugged terrain.

The other two images show workers laying track. Nice images.

[20.5 cm x 13 cm] Tan blank mount with ‘Barkalow Bros. – Denver Colo.’ stamped in ink by hand on the

reverse. Subtle rubbing to corners of the mount.

Image of the Central Colorado rail line through Beaver Brook, Colorado. Water tower, lookout and

station present in this image. Strong contrasts.
