Rare Russian Imprint of ‘Life in Utah’

1- Beadle, John Hanson. Zhizn' Mormonov v Uta; ili Tainstva i

prestupleniia Mormonizma; izlozhenie tainikh obriadov i tseremonii

sviatikh posldnikh dnei [Life in Utah; or, the mysteries and crimes of

Mormonism]. Sanktpeterburg [Saint Petersburg, RUS]: Tip. M. Khana,

1872. First Edition in Russian. 415pp. Octavo [25 cm] Original 3/4 calf

over blacked pebbled boards. Minor sporadic foxing throughout

otherwise near fine. Title translates to: 'The life of the Mormons in

Utah; or the Sacraments and Crimes of Mormonism.'

Rare Russian imprint of Beadle's screed against Mormonism. We locate

two institutional copies (LoC - LDSCHL). This is one of only two books in

Russian listed in Flake/Draper and the only dedicated solely to the LDS

Church (the other title: 'Puteshestvie po Amerike V 1869–1870,' is a

travel narrative that includes ten pages devoted to Salt Lake City and

the LDS Church). So, few copies of this work have surfaced, we assume that the print run was small. That

this title was translated into Russian (only two years after the American first), shows the fascination that

Utah held to the outside world. Flaker/Draper 348d. Rare.

John Hanson Beadle(1840-1897), was a journalist and author who was born in Liberty township, Parke

County, Indiana. As a youth of twenty-one he enlisted in the 31st Indiana infantry for the Civil War,

serving as a private until 1862, when he was discharged for disability. He then entered the State

University of Michigan, where he studied law in addition to his regular subjects, and was graduated in

1867. He was admitted to the bar, but after practicing in Evansville, Indiana for one year, abandoned

that profession for the career of a journalist. His first newspaper work was done for the Cincinnati

Commercial, following which he spent eight years in the far West, the first year as editor of the Salt Lake

Reporter. His Life in Utah, Western Wilds and the Men Who Redeem Them, and The Undeveloped West

are the results of his experiences in the western states. In the latter years of his life he wrote editorials

and historical and political articles for the American Press Association. Subsequently he made an

extended tour of Canada and Nova Scotia and in 1890, through Europe.

"John Hanson Beadle, though equally as serious as Kate [Field] on the Mormon question, was a clever

and popular journalist. His caustic remarks about the pretensions of Western communities, his savage

wit in describing Western personalities, his remorseless judgments of Western boosters remind one of

the late H. L. Mencken. As with Mencken, Beadle's humor, at least on matters about which he felt keenly,

was an instrument of ridicule and derision. He was a master of caricature - the deliberate exaggeration

of defective qualities and characteristics in order to convey an image of absurdity and ludicrousness. Just

as Mencken's "The Hills of Zion" and "The Sahara of the Bozart" were intended to produce profane

laughter at the pretensions of the Bible Belt, Beadle's anti-Mormon columns and books were a veritable

bastion of hyperbole, designed to quash any incipient admiration for Mormon industry, sobriety, and

board and backstrip. Gentle bowing to the boards, otherwise

better than very good.

This Hong Kong Mission produced work was intended as a guide

for LDS Missionaries in Hong Kong and offers directions and

instructions in Cantonese/English (Characters & Romanization).

This comprehensive work is divided into eight sections:

Priesthood Ordinances and Ceremonies; Conducting Church

Meetings; Scripture; Church History & Church Officials; Chinese

Surnames; [Chinese] Geography; [How to Write] A Chinese

Letter; Miscellaneous Vocabulary.

"It is our hope that this first edition has laid the foundation and

set the pattern for a substantial and helpful general guide to the

Cantonese Language." - from the Preface.

We do not locate any copies of this 1973 printing (that is stated

as a first edition). We do locate three copies of a 1969 edition

(BYU, LoC, LDSCHL) which is also stated to be a first edition and

has Illustrated section dividers in color, this copy has illustrated

section dividers in black and white. Rare.

Trent Harris’ Luna Mesa - 1/10 copies

This edition was limited to ten numbered copies, this is copy #4. Signed and numbered by Harris on the

title-page. A blu-ray of Luna Mesa is included (which is also signed). This work contains 53 color

reproductions of Harris' illustrated notebook pages and illustrated postcards that became the basis for

his experimental film, 'Luna Mesa.'

"Luna Mesa: Notebook pages created by Trent Harris in bars and hotel rooms in faraway lands. They

were used as source material for Harris' abstract film, 'Luna Mesa.' Also included are postcards, ones

Harris sent to himself." - Title-page.

Trent Harris has directed nine feature films and scores of documentaries and experimental pieces. To

date he has been honored with retrospectives at: Raindance Film Festival (London), 92 Y Tribeca (New

General Authority’s Selling Techniques

4- Sill, Sterling W. 1957 Sales Bulletins. [Salt Lake

City]: 1957. Quarto [28.5 cm] Blue buckram with

the title gilt on the backstrip. Near fine. A handful

of instances of marginalia and underlining by Sill

throughout.

Privately printed and distributed sales guide that

contains 52 short motivational pieces and

salesman techniques. At the time, Sill, worked for

New York Life, who in 1940, appointed him as

inspector of agencies for New York Life's offices in

seven Western states.

"Remember to impregnate these sales talks with

yourself with a lot of positive, pleasant,

enthusiastic emotions. We become what we feel

and do and we need feelings of self-confidence,

optimism, determination and faith. Practice

seeing yourself as you want to be, and doing the

things you want to do, and making the money

you want to make." - p.[3]

Sterling W. Sill (1903-1904), was a popular

speaker and prolific writer, he was also a

prominent businessman and educator. Sill was

named an emeritus General Authority of the L.D.S

Church on Dec. 31, 1978. He was an insurance

executive at the time of his calling as an Assistant

to the Twelve, to which he was sustained on April

6, 1954. During his service, he was the speaker

over KSL Radio's Sunday Evening on Temple

Square for 17 years, and addressed many Church

and civic gatherings. He authored 47 books on

religious and social themes, including a popular

series on leadership. He served for 11 years as a

member of the Board of Regents of the University

of Utah, four as chairman of the board.

Salt Lake Route Card

7- [San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad]. From Los Angeles to Salt Lake City via the Salt Lake

Route. Los Angeles: Los Angeles Printing Co., (c.1905). Single sheet [9 cm x 28 cm] on heavy card stock

with a vertical fold at the center (as issued) and printed in striking full-color. Very good. The tunnel is a

die-cut window, on the reverse it is one of the arches next to the L.A. Depot.

Decorative post card for William Andrews Clark's 'San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad',

popularly known as the 'Salt Lake Route' which ran from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles across a mostly

uninhabited Mohave and through the then small outpost of Las Vegas in Clark County, which is named

for W.A. Clark. San Pedro is listed on the shield, so this card was issued before San Pedro was removed

from the name in 1915.

One side of the card shows the front of a train in a desert landscape as it approaches a tunnel. The

reverse has an illustration of the Los Angeles Depot on one side and the Salt Lake Depot (next to the

Tempe) on the other.

Dinner menu for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Dining Car. Cover shows a color print of the Salt Lake

Temple. Interior contains a breakfast menu. The rear cover contains a brief description of the Mormon

migration from Nauvoo to the Salt Lake Valley.

issued. Very good. Small ink stamp for a

travel agent below the room rates.

One side contains an illustration of the Hotel

Utah and list of room rates. The reverse

features three captioned images, all under

the heading 'Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A.':

Striking Salt Lake Temple Construction photograph taken from the center of the Temple Block and shows

the north west corner with scaffolding surrounding the mostly completed spires. New planted trees dot

the grounds.

Charles Roscoe Savage (1832-1909) was an accomplished and prolific photographer who lived

successfully within his Salt Lake City community and traveled widely throughout the West taking

photographs and befriending other important photographers of his day such as Carleton Watkins,

Edward Wilson, Timothy O'Sullivan, Alfred Hart and A.J. Russell. Savage took several of the West's most

famous images at the celebration of the joining of the transcontinental railroads at Promontory Point,

Utah in 1869. Savage also took the first photographs of what became Zion National Park.

Rare James Fennemore image of a mining operation with out-buildings, smoke stacks and two wagons.

This image is very likely to be from the Beaver area (Lincoln MIne?).

James Fennemore (1849-1941) began his photography career in Beaver, Utah, before moving to Salt

Lake City and working for C.R. Savage. He later replaced E.O. Beaman as the photographer of the Powell

expedition (1871-72). Fennemore taught John K. Hillers, then a teamster on the expedition - who

eventually replaced Fennemore, who quit due to illness. Fennemore was also the photographer at the

John D. Lee execution.

"In the fall of 1871, [John Wesley] Powell walked into [Charles Roscoe] Savage's studio in Salt Lake, and

asked James Fennemore, one of Savage's employees, to print 250 pictures taken by [E.O.] Beaman during

his recent trip from Green River, Wyoming, to what is now Green River, Utah. Powell needed these

pictures to help convince Washington congressman to fund further exploration. He was so pleased with

the printing that he asked Fennemore to join the expedition the following year as photograher-in-chief."

Nice image of the third highest peak in Utah, Gilbert Peak, with Gilbert Lake in the foreground. A man

sits on a rock near the lake. This photograph was taken by Jackson as part of his duties as the official

photographer of the Hayden survey.

"Our other experiences in the High Uintas were all interesting, but difficult at times. It was a long, hard

expedition, lasting until long after dark. Most of the time we were at an altitude of eleven thousand to

twelve thousand feet, but the splendid scenes of the lake and of the Uintas were ample compensation for

the day's effort." - William H. Jackson.

In 1870 Dr. Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden invited Jackson to become the official photographer of the

United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. Jackson remained with the Survey

until 1878, working closely with the artist Thomas Moran and others. The official report of the Survey for

1875 stated of Jackson's photographs: "They have done very much, in the first place, to secure

truthfulness in the representation of mountain and other scenery."

the finishing touches on my outfit and to photograph the old mill. then, following the others, I made my

beautiful vistas, including grassy meadows and little lakes, with glimpses of the distant snow-clad

"Camp had been made at Independence Rock, a well-known landmark on the old Overland Trail. the rock

had been given this name, it is said, from the fact that an early pioneering party had camped there on

the Fourth of July. It is an immense rounded mass of granite, rising above the level valley floor near the

Sweetwater River. It is nearly two hundred feet high at one end and about fifteen hundred yards in

circumference. On one side the slope is so gradual that we led Hypo to the top with my photographic

outfit on his back." - William H. Jackson.

Nice image from T. J. Hileman (1882 - 1945), who for decades photographed in Montana (primarily

Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park), originally for the Great Northern Railway. In 1926, Hileman

opened photo studios in Glacier Park Lodge and for many years he produced and sold countless

photographs of the area.

Nice early images from the renowned photographer. Besides the usual sampling of excellent images of

Yellowstone, this collection also contains many uncommon Haynes portraits and views: two Native

American portraits (Rain-in-the-Face and Curly); images of the Upper Missouri; railroad construction

images; Billings; Fort Lincoln and the Badlands.

Frank Jay Haynes (1853-1921) was employed by the Northern Pacific RR in 1875 to take pictures along

their route from Minnesota to the West Coast for advertising and promotional purposes. From 1884

through 1915 Haynes operated a lucrative service industry in Yellowstone National Park making and

selling souvenir photographs, taking pictures of tour parties, and publishing graphic souvenirs. F. Jay

Haynes was known as the "Official Park Photographer."

Twenty Edward Curtis Photogravure Cards

Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952) Edward Sheriff Curtis was a prolific photographer who took over 40,000

images over a three-decade span, that ranged from the Eskimo or Inuit people of the far north to the

Hopi people of the Southwest. His importance as a western photographer and documenter of Native

Americans cannot be overstated. This series of 20 Native Americans images was produced in the fall and

winter of 1904, that he sold to help fund field work for the following year.

Rare Images of Early Oklahoma

19- Dedrick, John Virgil. Taloga, Oklahoma RPPC Collection [Native Americans]. Taloga, OK: (c.1907-

1910). 109 Real Photo Postcards [9 cm x 14 cm] Most in nice condition. More than half contain

manuscript notes and postmarks. Included is the Wichita Postcard Club publication: 'Numbered &

Illustrated Checklist for Real Photograph Post Cards by John V. Dedrick - Taloga, Oklahoma.' Of the 123

numbered cards 106 are present, there are three Dedrick cards from the same time that are

unnumbered. List available.

This is the largest collection of Dedrick cards that we aware of being offered for sale.

John Virgil Dedrick (1873-1960) began his career as a photographer in 1907 in Taloga, Oklahoma taking

photographs of Native Americans, cowboys, sod houses and early ranch and western life, this numbered

series dates from then. It is this early series that is most collected and very difficult to find. In 1910 he

moved to Texas and evolved to other types of commercial photography. He eventually took his business

to Tacoma, Washington.

"Around the time of Oklahoma Statehood (1907) John and his brothers, Charlie and Frank, moved to the

Fort Sill area. John began taking pictures of Indians and other points of local interest such as sod houses,

dugout houses, and the way of life at that time. They lived in Taloga, Oklahoma, for several years. Taloga

is where this numbered series of Indians and Oklahoma postcards originated. The known series now

numbers from one to one hundred and twenty-three. We still don't know all of the titles, but the search

Some images are missing from the mounts. There are forty small color pictorial tourist cards mounted

near the center of the album. The photographs are a mix of purchased tourist shots and self-taken

photographs.

Full photo album documenting someone's travels in the American West with stops at Mount Rushmore,

Yellowstone, Glacier National Park, Oregon Coast, Las Vegas (including a nice shot of Fremont Street),

Boulder Dam, The Grand Canyon, Albuquerque and points in between. The album concludes with a series

of images of a wrecked truck.

Color illustration at the head of the El Escalante. A map of the Utah Parks Company Tour (printed lightly)

covers the page. The El Escalante was the starting point for countless Utah Parks Company tours. The

Utah Parks Company was a subsidiary of the Union Pacific and ran guided tours of the Parks and

Monuments of Southern Utah and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Printed in red, blue and black. Very good. Folds as issued. Gentle overall wear.

One side features a nice map [41 cm x 23.5 cm] that shows the Union Pacific Routes and roads through

Utah and Northern Arizona. To the right are three smaller road maps [ea. 12.5 cm x 14.5 cm] of Zion,

Bryce Canyon, each contains a brief blurb at the foot. The reverse features descriptions and images of the

parks. Brief mention of the then (1929) recently completed Grand Canyon Bridge [Navajo Bridge].

"This folder, which contains maps showing the motor routes to and around Zion, Grand Canyon and

Bryce Canyon National Parks, is presented to motorists by Union Pacific System, with the hope that it will

be of assistance to people driving to these famous scenic regions."

Produced to promote trips from the Utah Parks Company, which was a subsidiary of U.P., that ran guided

loop tours of the parks and monuments of southern Utah and northern Arizona.

El Tovar & South Rim Chromolithograph

23- Akin, Louis. El Tovar, Grand Canyon Arizona on the Santa Fe. [Grand Canyon, AZ]: [American

Lithograph Company], [1906]. Large chromolithograph [46.5 cm x 94 cm] in a contemporary wooden

frame [61 cm x 108 cm] that has a gilt border and a brass plaque. Image and frame in very good

condition. Image has a few small areas of subtle discoloration. This has not been examined out of the

frame. There are two different sizes of this lovely work, this is the larger.

Charming image of Fred Harvey's legendary lodge on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, El Tovar. This

is the unofficial companion piece to Thomas Moran's chromolithograph 'The Grand Canyon of Arizona

from Hermit Rim Road,' that was also produced for the Santa Fe Railroad, and like this was produced, to

hang in Santa Fe Railroad offices and also to sell to tourists.

This striking work that was originally painted a year after Fred Harvey opened the doors to the now

legendary, El Tovar Hotel on the edge South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This opulent and faux rustic resort

offered visitors an opportunity to view the natural wonder of the Grand Canyon while living in the lap of

luxury. The artist of this work, Louis Akin (1868-1913), lived for a time in El Tovar and is now widely

recognized for his landscapes of the Arizona wilderness and paintings of the Hopi.

Maynard Dixon’s Personal Ledger

24- Dixon, Maynard. Paintings by Maynard Dixon. [San Francisco]: [1912-1920]. 74 leaves [46 cm x 39

cm] of handmade paper. The majority of the leaves have three uniform holes at the left.

The portfolio contains 75 entries (28 are duplicates), as well as the title page, on handmade paper. All

entries are in Dixon's distinctive hand, and include the title, size, date, and sometimes the location and

disposition of the work. The cover is titled Paintings by Maynard Dixon, along with his distinctive

Thunderbird symbol outlined in a circle.

The entries were accompanied by original photographs done by noted San Francisco photographer

Gabriel Moulin. Most of the Moulin photographs have been removed but five still remain. These

photographs [24 cm x 17 cm] contain either Edith Hamlin's stamp or Gabriel Moulin's (and in many cases

some pencil annotations, probably by Hamlin). The photographed paintings are: 'The Trading Post' -

'Corral Dust' - 'Camp in the Mountains' - 'Home Pastures' - 'The Old Cow Town'.

Among the numerous entries are murals for Anita Baldwin's Indian Room and Jinks Room for her Arcadia

home, The Old Trading Post, Corral Dust, Home Pastures, Pony Boy, Blackfeet Historians, Camp in the

Mountains, The Navajos, The Story Tellers, From Range to Range, What an Indian Thinks, Cattle Country,

Home of the Half-Breed, among others.

A number of works are from his legendary 1917 trip to Montana. Dixon probably intended the portfolio

as a document he could show prospective clients and for museum and gallery exhibitions. Although most

of the photographs have been removed by Dixon or his third wife, Edith Hamlin, there is information

contained in the portfolio that cannot be found elsewhere. As such, the portfolio is an unmatched record

of paintings by one of this country's greatest Western artists. From the library of noted Dixon scholar

Donald Hagerty by way of Dixon's third wife, Edith Hamlin.

The legendary Kolb Brothers, Emery & Ellsworth, opened their studio in 1904, perched on the rim of the

Grand Canyon. The building is still standing, but is now operated as a museum and gallery. They took

countless images of the Canyon and the Colorado River below.

Promotional pictorial map of the southwest from the Fred Harvey company, who was the concessionaire

for the Santa Fe Railroad and who also ran a string of motels and restaurants from Chicago to southern

California with a focus on the American southwest.

This is the smaller New Wilson Hotel version, of this lovely route map.

Captivating map of the Mormon Trail from Nauvoo, Illinois, to the Great Salt Lake, which depicts the

physical features of the countryside, the mountains, rivers, waterfalls, trees, etc. Also, wagons and

trekkers on the trail, Indian encampments, buffalo, and more.

A truly marvelous depiction of one of the great episodes in American history, produced to commemorate

the 50th anniversary of the journey. This detailed image was produced with the aid of Apostle Franklin D.

Richards, the church historian, in 1899. Uncommon.

Uncommon bird's-eye view of Helena, that is usually printed with a Kessler's Brewery Advertisement

beneath the title. Sixteen inset illustrations along the foot as a border, of prominent buildings and views.

Some of the buildings are numbered/lettered, legend lists: Public buildings, Hotels, Railroads, Street

Railways, Schools, Newspapers and Churches (52 in all).

"A Brewery in Helena appears as the sponsor of the large view of that city in 1890. Perhaps some copies

of these views were published and sold in the normal way through subscriptions and sales in local shops,

while other copies were overprinted with such advertising copy and made available to the sponsor at a
