Publisher’s Note

The human need and the capacity to be informed... to learn... to know... and to build relationships is based largely on the use and exchange of information. Yet the world’s vast and ever-expanding deposits of information have little power and shed little light if they remain isolated, inaccessible, unconnected, or vulnerable to landing in the wrong hands.

As Tsehai, the Sun in Amharic, knowledge based information has the power to illuminate our world. But for this to happen, information must be intelligently and efficiently gathered, edited, and produced—so that it can be made accessible and ultimately usable.

At Tsehai, we fully acknowledge the fundamental power of knowledge based information by establishing comprehensive information environments that are reliable, accessible, and convenient. The result is knowledge that reveals its hidden potential, that’s fit and ready to be read and consumed.

Together with Tsehai, individuals and academic and other institutions can contribute to the power of information that matters to life...information that illuminates what’s possible and that can move the world forward.

We are a publishing company driven to execute, to partner, and to perform. We do our job with a passion for delivering results that meet or exceed our customers’ expectations. We pride ourselves on doing what’s right over what’s easy or simply lucrative. We are devoted to the advancement and well-being of our people, our society, our customers, our industry, and our world. We are TSEHAI—where knowledge shines and meaningful information illuminates and lives on.

We believe that knowledge based information is our business’s most important asset. Through the effective use of knowledge production, our writers become authors and our readers, well-informed world citizens who can contribute to making this world a wonderful place for all to live in harmony.

Classical Ethiopian Philosophy

by Claude Sumner, Ph.D.

About the Book:

Classical Ethiopian Philosophy with its English translation of the five Ethiopic basic texts included in the series Ethiopian Philosophy, its introduction and notes, is a synthesis of a scholarship that aims at placing at the disposal of a very broad audience the mature fruit of his Claude Sumner’s studies.

Classical Ethiopian Philosophy masterfully interconnects with Sumner’s other works in an effort to situate it within the unity of the total pattern of Sumner’s pedagogy, thus orienting the reader’s attention to the positive dynamics of his thinking.

Reviews:

“Classical Ethiopian Philosophy is a rare example of an extraordinary synthetic power bearing the deep marks of scholarly seriousness, patience, hard work, honesty, and respect for its subject matter. Its author is a special person, who fell in love with Ethiopia, its beauty, its people, and most particularly its rich philosophical tradition, the main source of African philosophy.”

—Teodros Kiros, Boston University

“Claude Sumner [...] has made available, through scholarly editions and in translation, the work of nearly two millennia of ethical and theological reflection in the geographical area of contemporary Ethiopia. This collection which is the product of his many years of scholarship, allows those of us who do not know ge’ez to approach texts [...] representing, among other things, one of the oldest Christian philisophical traditions.”

—K. Anthony Appiah, Princeton University

Jijiga

The History of a Strategic Town In The Horn of Africa by Tibebe Eshete, Ph.D.

About the Book:

This book presents the history of Jijiga, a town of great strategic, commercial, political, and military significance in the Horn of Africa. The town’s history is associated immensely with the attempts of the Ethiopian government to establish a solid frontier base in the course of the incorporation of the Ogaden in 1891 and later in the process of maintaining a strong posture in the region. The book mirrors the political vicissitudes of the Horn of Africa through the prism of the social and political history of Jijiga by highlighting major events such as the fluidly but momentous period of Lij Iyasu, the Ethio-Somali war of 1963 and that of 1977 with regional and international ramifications.

Jijiga presents a nuanced discourse of ethnicity in the Horn of Africa. Jijiga’s unique place in the Horn of Africa offers multiple opportunities to foray into the fields of social, political, and military history. Consequently, it is an undertaking that incorporates several dimensions of interrelated phenomena within the broader compass of the history of the Ogaden and the wider environs.

Contents:

1. General Background

2. Jijiga: Foundation And Growth (1891 – 1918)

3. Jijiga: From the Period of Tekle Hawariat Up to the Italian Conquest (1917-1936)

4. Jijiga: Under Foreign Occupation (1936-1948)

5. Jijiga Between 1948 – 1974

6. The Evolution And Growth Of Urban Institutions And Hotel Services In Jijiga

7. The Municipality of Jijiga

8. The Embattled Town: Jijiga and the Socio-Political Fall Outs of the Ogaden War of 1977

About the Author:

Tibebe Eshete, Ph.D. is a visiting Professor teaching African History and African Religions at Michigan State University. He has taught African History, World History, and US History at Missouri State University, Calvin College, and Cornerstone University. Black Ethiopia

A Glimpse into African Diplomacy, 1956-1991

by Belete Belachew Yihun, Ph.D.

About the Book:

Ethiopia’s place in the Pan-African Movement and independent Africa’s affairs have long been a point of academic debate. Often, the country’s contact with the Movement is downgraded to a simple inspirational role. Its contributions, meanwhile, are dismissed as little more than playing exalted host to inter-state conferences and continental organizations. Intermittent attempts at reconstructing history ascribe the motives of Ethiopian regimes to promoting and sustaining strategic national interests. The absence of an objective and critical treatment of the issue limits understanding of Ethiopia’s position in the process.

Black Ethiopia: a Glimpse into African Diplomacy, 1956-1991 endeavors to remedy this. The book examines what actually happened in Africa’s struggle to create a united front against common adversaries and places Ethiopia at its center. The intricacies in African diplomacy and politics, the nature of regional and continental associations, and the failures and successes of Africa’s struggle on various fronts dominate the book. Archival sources from the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs shed new light on the history of inter-African relations.

Black Ethiopia creates a narrative from Ethiopia’s role in Africa’s diplomacy and politics. The nature of the imperial regime’s and military junta’s (Derg) involvement in regional and continental affairs are given special emphasis. The book attempts to paint a balanced portrait, highlighting both achievements and failures of the two governments in African politics.

Ethiopia played a significant role in both the Pan-African Movement and independent Africa politics. Black Ethiopia documents historical events, deciphering them in the context of Africa’s readiness to create a united front.

About the Author:

Belete Belachew Yihun, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of History in Jimma University, Ethiopia. He specializes in diplomatic history of modern Ethiopia and post-independence Africa. His research interest also includes inter-and intra-state conflicts in the Horn of Africa and the continent in general.

Francis McCullagh’s book Italy’s War for a Desert is a vastly important part of the complete story of the 1911 Italian takeover of Tripoli.

McCullagh, a notable Irish war correspondent, asserts that because of the iron grip the pre-fascist Italian government already had upon the news and information outlets, the rest of the world was kept blind to the horrors and abuses executed upon the Arabs in Tripoli. The lack of journalistic expression and integrity to report the news accurately to the world allowed for the massacres and abuse of Arab citizens of Tripoli.

This edition features an early memorandum anticipating Italian war crimes in Ethiopia, written by Dr. Charles Martin, aka Hakim Workneh. Richard Pankhurst’s new introduction explains the historical importance of this book, which chronicles the atrocities of the Italian Armed forces in Tripoli. Pankhurst focuses on the legitimacy of McCullagh’s accounts as well as provides background on a key player in the atrocities—Rodolfo Graziani, also known as the “hyena of Libya” and “butcher of the Arabs.”

Being Some Experiences of a War-Correspondent with the Italians in Tripoli

by Francis McCullaghIntroduction by Richard Pankhurst

About the Book:

Francis McCullagh’s book Italy’s War for a Desert is a vastly important part of the complete story of the 1911 Italian takeover of Tripoli. McCullagh, a notable Irish war correspondent, asserts that because of the iron grip the pre-fascist Italian government already had upon the news and information outlets, the rest of the world was kept blind to the horrors and abuses executed upon the Arabs in Tripoli. The lack of journalistic expression and integrity to report the news accurately to the world allowed for the massacres and abuse of Arab citizens of Tripoli.

This book, which constitutes one of the saddest chapters in the history of European colonialism in Africa, describes the beginnings of Italian rule in Libya. It also throws extremely unflattering light on Rodolfo Graziani (1882-1955) the most ruthless of the ruthless Italian military—who sought to govern his country’s colonial empire by brutally crushing the aspirations of its native inhabitants.

About the Author:

Francis McCullagh (1874–1956) was a British journalist, war correspondent and author. He worked as a correspondent for the New York Herald from 1898. In 1903 he was living in Japan, working for the English language newspaper The Japan Times. Observing the growing tension between the Empire of Japan and Russian Empire, he studied the Russian language, and moved to Port Arthur, the major Russian military base in Manchuria in 1904. Obtaining a post as a for the Novi Kraï (New Land) newspaper of Port Arthur, at the start of the Russo-Japanese War he became a non-military observer embedded within the Imperial Russian Army. At war’s end, he was evacuated in March 1905 as a prisoner of war, traveling from Dalny to Ujina on the Nippon Yusen liner Awa Maru. His experiences were published in 1906 as With the Cossacks: Being the Story of an Irishman who Rode with the Cossacks throughout the Russo-Japanese War.

Soaring On Winged Verse

The Life of Ethiopian Poet-PlaywrightTsegaye Gabre-Medhin

by Fasil Yitbarek

About the Book:

This book is the official memoir of the late Ethiopian Poet Laureate Tsegaye Gabre-Medhin. From 1951 to 1996 Tsegaye wrote close to 45 plays (including translations and adaptations) as well as a volume of poetry, Isat Woy Abeba (Blaze or Bloom), hailed among the most influential works in Amharic. Original in thought and provocative in content, Tsegaye’s works probe into the tumultuous meeting spaces of ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ values while critically examining assumptions of identity across generations.

The memoir began in the twilight years of Tsegaye’s life in New York, as a collaborative effort between the author and the poet. It is a text that is culled from long interview sessions conducted with this memoir in mind. Part of this book was completed after Tsegaye’s death in February 2006 through extensive research both in the US and in Ethiopia by family members, the author, and the editor.

Soaring on Winged Verse serves as an intimate window into the writer’s world and a glimpse of the possible origins of his creative musings. From his humble beginnings as a shepherd in Boda to his rise as a luminary literary figure, this publication arguably represents the most complete memoir of Tsegaye’s eventful life.

About the Author:

Fasil Yitbarek is currently a professor of English at Qatar University in Doha, Qatar. He has taught English at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. He is author of Imbilta a book of poetry in Amharic (2007) and The Texture of Dreams (2005). Fasil’s long years of close friendship with Tsegaye and other family members have provided him opportunity to begin this project and draw ample inspiration from the poet’s life to see this memoir through to its completion.

An Introduction to the Economic History of Ethiopia

from early times to 1800

by Richard Pankhurst

About the Book:

Ethiopia, lying on the sea route between the great civilizations of Egypt and the East, played no mean role in the history and economic life of ancient times. Its relations with the Hellenic world—both cultural and economic—were particularly close. The importance of the Aksumite empire, which produced the famous stone obelisks of Northern Ethiopia, was recognized not only by the rulers of the Eastern Roman Empire but by the prophet Mohamed, whose followers fled thither from the Arabian persecutions.

Converted to Christianity at a very early period, Ethiopia during the Middle Ages had much in common with the warring feudal kingdoms of Medieval Europe, though an examination of the economic and political structure of this ‘Land of Prester John’ reveals interesting contrasts.

Because of its long-established institutions, the chronicles of its kings, and the testimony of foreign visitors, Ethiopia offers fertile ground for the study of African history, which is receiving increasing attention throughout the world.

Dr. Pankhurst’s exhaustive study, the first attempt at a comprehensive economic history of the country, examines such topics as the system of government and taxation, the organization of the army, the mode of land tenure, the extent of urban development, the state of agriculture and farming, the utilization of forests and minerals, problems of communication, the direction of trade routes, the division of labor and the role of foreigners, health and medicine, the various types of currency and ‘primitive money’ employed, the character of internal and external trade, including the slave trade, and the question of access to the sea.

About the Author:

Richard Pankhurst is the founder of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies of Addis Ababa University. He is currently Chair of the Society of Friends of the Institute, as well as a founding member of the AFROMET. He is the author of many articles, books and monographs. He now undertakes library consultancies, and edits academic books and university theses.

About the Book:

Bahru Zewde’s, Society & State in Ethiopian History is a compilation of essays pursuing the widest range of Ethiopian topics while celebrating the resiliency of the Ethiopian people and the nation’s complicated history and destiny. The author assumes a quiet patriotism as he faces some of the most formidable issues facing historical and modern day Ethiopia: ethno-history, political economy, urban development, and economic history with a constructive sensitivity.

Zewde’s essays provide refreshing insight into the major events spanning from 1930-1990s, beginning with the resistance against the Italian invasion to the current period dominated by radical politics. Numerous chapters focus on the intellectual’s responsibility in the making and unmaking of a nation amidst great political and cultural turbulence.

This book not only contributes to the body of knowledge about modern and contemporary Ethiopian society, but also affirms that a past filled with adversity should not impede a positive future for Ethiopia.

Reviews:

“Its coverage and scope is simply impressive … It sets a high standard of excellence and a degree of sensitivity in the treatment of subject matter rarely seen. This is a refreshing and reassuring example

… of the scholar at his best, as a unifier, as a peacemaker, and ultimately as a responsible citizen. Bahru’s scholarship is impeccable, and his language and style simply elegant. What sets him apart also is … his sensitivity and constructive approach to contentious issues. Here is the intellectual at his best—sober and detached in analysis; fully conscious of his responsibility; and committed to the larger good.”

—Assefa Bequele, Founding Executive Director and Distinguished Fellow at the African Child Policy Forum

About the Author:

Bahru Zewde is an Emeritus Professor of History at Addis Ababa University. He served as Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University and Executive Director of the Forum for Social Studies. He is currently Vice-President of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, Board Member of TrustAfrica, and Editor of CODESRIA’s Africa Review of Books.

Ethiopian Reminiscences

The Early Days

by Richard and Rita Pankhurst

About the Book:

In 1958, Richard Pankhurst asked Rita Eldon to leave her home in London and move to Ethiopia with him and his mother, suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst. Without the promise of marriage and with relatively little knowledge of the country, Rita said yes, and so began the love affair between the two and their adopted home, Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Reminiscences: The Early Days, by Rita and Richard Pankhurst, is a joint autobiography in which Rita and Richard reveal never before published stories about growing up with unusual and intriguing parents, their meeting at age 31, and the ease in which they adapted to their new country. Reminiscences provides a unique view of the history of colonialism, travel within Ethiopia, parties that range from the grand affairs of royalty to the down-home barbeque of a roasted pig, seemingly ceaseless work, and, most important to Rita and Richard, innumerable deep and life-long friendships.

Contents:1. A Changing World2. Coming of Age3. First Years in Ethiopia4. The National Library of Ethiopia and the Palace Exhibition 5. Prominent Visitors, Fesitvals and Other Events6. African Perspectives7. Travels in the Land of Prester John 8. Sylvia’s Death9. The Abortive Coup d’Etat

10. Later Years

About the Author:

Richard Pankhurst is the founder of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies of Addis Ababa University. He is currently Chair of the Society of Friends of the Institute, as well as a founding member of the AFROMET. He is the author of many articles, books and monographs.

Rita Pankhurst studied modern languages and obtained her MA at Oxford University in 1948. Most of Rita’s working life has been spent in academic librarianship at Haile Selassie I University, The National Library of Ethiopia, and the Press Library of Chatham House. A Military Bibliography of the Horn of Africa

Compiled by Thomas OfcanskyEdited by Elias Wondimu

Book Information ISBN: 978-1-59907-044-5Format: Hardbound, 6”x 9,” 500 pagesPrice: $49.95Publication date: January 2013

About the Book:

A Military Bibliography of the Horn of Africa is not only the most authoritative and comprehensive study of the region’s military history but is also the first bibliography on the military history of the region.

Since the end of World War II, the Horn of Africa has been one of the most conflicted regions in the world. It is a place where democratic governance is scarces and countless disputes over land, water, and ethnic and religious divisions are rampant. These situations underscore the need for a bibliography that focuses on those issues that contribute to conflict and the use of military force, so that better studies can be conducted to find a common solution.

This book features the five countries that make the Horn and is subdivided into sections and subsections that classify the bibliography for easy access.

About the Author:

Thomas Ofcansky, Ph.D. received his Ph.D. in East African history from West Virginia University (1981). He held several academic posts and published numerous books and articles about East Africa, including Historical Dictionary of Ethiopia (Scarecrow Press 2004), and Paradise Lost: A History of Game Preservation in East Africa (2002). He has traveled widely throughout East Africa. Until recently, Ofcansky worked as a specialist of the Horn and Eastern Africa at the U.S. State Department.

Elias Wondimu is the founding publisher of the International Journal of Ethiopian Studies and Ethiopian Journal of Religious Studies. An exiled journalist, Wondimu has played a pioneering role in the expansion of knowledge about the different aspect of the region’s social and political history that he hopes will be used constructively. In post 2005 election violence in Ethiopia, Wondimu established the Ethiopian Institute for Nonviolence Education and Peace Studies (EINEPS). The first of such institutions in the Horn, Wondimu believes that EINEPS will help change the culture of war that dominates his country. Through TSEHAI Publishers, which he founded a decade ago, and its imprints, Wondimu continues to publish books that “heal, not kill.”

Ethiopia’s Development Challenges

In Ethiopia, the level of institutional development of government is deteriorating with a concomitant negative impact on the development of social organization. These retrogressive processes have in turn retarded the accountability of the state.

State and Civil Society provides an analysis of a failure in development policy by the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front lead government through the examination of its first fifteen years rule in Ethiopia. This in-depth analysis of the issue of civil society and the condition of state and society provides important insight into the question of why poverty and unfreedom reinforce each other in Ethiopia.

Melakou Tegegn, PhD in Sociology at the University of South Africa, Pretoria, has worked as a Development Consultant and coordinator for many country and regional development programmes with regional NGOs. He also lectured part time at the Institute of Gender Studies, at the Addis Ababa University from 2001 to 2005. His publications include Ethiopia: Ethiopian Millennium Special Publication and The Ethiopia-Eritrea Conflict: A Critical Observation.

Haile Selassie’s Government

by Christopher Clapham, Ph.D.Afterword by Theodore Vestal, Ph.D.

About the Book:

Haile Selassie’s Government serves as a gripping chronicle of the swift and merciless replacement of Ethiopian imperial rule by military junta. Forty years since its publication, the lasting appeal of Haile Sellassie’s Government lies in its ability to truthfully capture a fallen political order in a perspective that is not only informative in its revealing of the structural weaknesses that lead to the collapse of the regime, but also evocative in its detailing of the traumas that struck the twilight years both of Haile-Selassie and his imperial government order.

Reviews:

“[Christopher Clapham] studied, interviewed, and observed in Ethiopia while lecturing at its Law School, and has brilliantly synthesized an imposing mass of material. Certainly, Haile-Selassie’s Government is the best scholarly description of some key institutions of contemporary Ethiopia, of the modus operandi of the Emperor and his higher officials, and of the forces which influence much government behaviour.”

— James C. N. Paul, The Journal of Modern African Studies: Cambridge University Press“It is not enough to say that Clapham’s book is first rate. Its contributions go far beyond Africanist concerns. I would regard it as a valuable work for anyone in comparative political systems, and I would urge that it be read by historians in spite of its preoccupation with the current.”

— A. A. Castagno, Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science: Sage publication

“The Empire of Ethiopia is as lost in the vastness of its mountain highlands as it is lost in the literature of history and political science…the promise of [Christopher Clapham’s] book is that it is the first to penetrate into the power structure of this area…”

— John M. Cohen, Africa Today: Indiana University Press

About the Author:

Christopher Clapham, currently a Co-Opted member of the University of Cambridge Centre of African Studies, previously taught at the Universities of Addis Ababa, Manchester, and West Indies. Economic History of Ethiopia

by Richard PankhurstPreface by Paul Zeleza, Ph.D.

About the Book:

The original pioneering text in African economic history holds its value with the second edition of Economic History of Ethiopia. This comprehensive title beams with intricate details and enlightening insights about the economic structures and practices in Ethiopian society in the nineteenth century and provides a compelling platform for theories and conclusions to be drawn. This second edition – the first printed in 1968 when African economic history was in its inception – retains its value despite the dramatic changes and struggles over the past four decades. Pankhurst’s novel is booming with data but also rich in description brought to life with beautiful illustrations. It is a competitive force in the field of African economic history and presents the key questions pressing today’s writers of African economy.

Reviews:

“Unencumbered by faddish theorizing, [Economic History of Ethiopia] gives us a vast and intricate portrait of the Ethiopian economy and society, the political system that undergirded it, the prosaic activities that characterized it, the episodic watershed developments that transformed it, and the structures that sustained it.”

—Paul Zeleza, Ph.D., Dean of the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, LMU

“Nothing remotely comparable has yet to appear for the equally important 1935-1975 period. Economic History remains a standard reference for those who wish to take a stab at such puzzles and conundrums as Ethiopia’s continuing inability to produce a robust fiscal system that undergirds political order and economic security[...]”

—Berhanu Abegaz, Professor of Economics, College of William and Mary

About the Author:

Richard Pankhurst is the founder of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies of Addis Ababa University. He is currently Chair of the Society of Friends of the Institute, as well as a founding member of the AFROMET. He is the author of many articles, books and monographs.

Paul Tiyambe Zeleza, Ph.D. is a Malawian historian, literary critic, novelist, short-story writer, and former president of the African Studies Association. He is currently the Dean of the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts at Loyola Marymount University.

About the Book:

For a number of centuries Christian and Muslim principalities existed side by side in relative harmony. The Zagwe dynasty was hardly interested in the area beyond Lasta to the south, and Christian Ethiopia had very little to fear from the weak and divided Muslim kingdoms. Only after the rise of the new Solomonic dynasty with Yekune Amlak in 1270 was a new policy of containing the Muslim principalities adopted. Still, the motivation for this policy was to a large extent political and commercial rather than religious. The wars of the thirteenth, fourteenth, and even fifteenth centuries could be considered a struggle for authority, revenue, and land between neighbouring political units.

Contents:1. The decline of the Muslim coast of Ethiopia2. The growth of Galla power in northern Ethiopia3. The revival of the highland trade4. The emergence of the Galla of the south-west5. Egypt and Galla-dominated Ethiopia6. The collapse of Galla predominance, Ethiopia and Egypt-second stage7. Teodros8. The rise of the Kingdom of Showa and the new Christian Empire

Reviews:

“We are indebted to Dr. Abir for leading us to this important analysis and for opening a whole period of Ethiopian history to the scrutiny of students and scholars.”

—Harold G. Marcus, author of A History of Ethiopia

“Abir provides a masterly account of the many conflicting tendencies of the period, drawing his analysis from a very wide selection of primary source materials. No region of Ethiopia is neglected in this story of regional strivings for domination over rival provinces. Abir has given those interested in African history one of the best studies yet written on Ethiopia’s past.”

—Norman R. Bennett, author of Studies in East African History

“We are indebted to Dr. Abir for leading us to this important analysis and for opening a whole period of Ethiopian history to the scrutiny of students and scholars.” ––Harold G. Marcus, author of A History of Ethiopia

“It is a book of fundamental importance to Ethiopianists; useful for students of the slave trade and Islamicists; and a significant contribution to the understanding of a neglected aspect of African history in the early and mid-nineteenth century.” ––Donald Crummey, author of Land and Society in the Christian Kingdom of Ethiopia

No region of Ethiopia is neglected in this story of regional strivings for domination over rival provinces. Abir has given those interested in African history one of the best studies yet written on Ethiopia’s past.” ––Norman R. Bennett, author of Studies in East African History

“Abir’s study is a pioneering work. He set out to produce a chart of the endlessly fluctuating and deceptive events of the Zamana Mazafint – the Era of Judges, or Princes – of Ethiopian history... His formal learning and prolonged field research are based on a thorough knowledge of the country and of its people. Without these ingredients he could not have written his book. ––Czeslaw Jesman, author of The Ethiopian Paradox

About the Book:

Republicans on the Throne is a memoir spanning Tekalign Gedamu’s early life during the waning days of the old feudal order, his six-decade career in the United Nations, the African Development Bank, and the government of Ethiopia. The book focuses on Ethiopia’s modernization and her painful quest for democracy.

Republicans on the Throne offers a glimpse into the problems of a new educational system. The expansion of education left in its wake a demand for more fundamental reforms which Emperor Haile Selassie’s government was increasingly unable to meet. The result was a coup d’état in 1960 that failed and another in 1974 that succeeded and triggered a ‘Marxist’ revolution that promised a new era of equality, democracy, and revitalized nationalism. The book examines closely the fundamental forces behind the revolution along with its failed attempts to improve the country’s fortunes on both the economic and political fronts.

Seventeen years later, left wing insurgents in the North who had been active throughout the revolution overthrew the government, allowing the country’s northernmost province to secede and install a regime guided by yet another brand of Marxism (the Albanian variety) at a time when the ideology was entering a period of historic decline. The book provides an assessment of the policies and practices of the new rulers and concludes that major challenges remain in the struggle for democracy, fundamental freedoms, national cohesion, and the fight against poverty.

The legacy of the country’s past, the continuing struggle for democracy, and the likely direction of the country’s future are the central concerns of the last part of the book. While there is little doubt that the curtain has fallen on Ethiopia’s monarchy, Ethiopia’s heritage of autocracy survives, but in a far less paternalistic and more sinister form than before. This leads many to be apprehensive about the prospects for democracy and other key challenges. But the author is more hopeful and offers his perspective in the concluding chapters of the book.

Reviews:

“A valuable autobiograpy by a patriotic Ethiopian who analyses his country’s government in the post-Menelik era. The author, a child of modern education, played a significant role in Ethiopian government and African banking, besides being active in numerous humanitarian causes. He is well placed to comment on the trends and aspirations of post-revolutionary Ethiopia.”

About the Book:

Ethiopia and Eritrea uncovers the last decade of the fiery struggle to reunite Eritrea with Ethiopia, the events of which are still highly discussed and controversial. Torn by Italian conquest from the Ethiopian motherland, Eritrea fought hard for liberty. The conflict was marked by disappointment and hope, success and failure, finally culminating in monumental victory. The successes of this movement are triumphs for the cause of human liberty and rich in social values, yet the events remain little understood around the globe. This book brings to light the gripping strife and historical victory, which are extremely poignant in our world today.

While most African colonies began to agitate for independence after World War II, Ethiopia was faced with a different challenge. It had already acquired independence more than two millennia ago, but it was still the victim of colonial offences—the most glaring of which is the loss of Eritrea to Italy. Cut off from the sea, Ethiopia was dramatically threatened by this colonial maneuver.

This book is “the penultimate chapter” in Sylvia Pankhurst’s work on Ethiopia. It documents the political challenge of deciding the fate of Eritrea from the establishment of British administration to Emperor Haile Selassie’s triumphal visit. Readers will be able to experience what life was like as the last vestiges of colonialism gave way to the era of independence. Moreover, they will gain an understanding of how previous political decisions affect the region today.

About the Author:

Sylvia Pankhurst (1882-1960), a radical suffragette and Anti-Fascist, dedicated the last half of her life to the cause of defending Ethiopia and Africa. As the publisher of New Times and Ethiopia News, she helped Ethiopia to fight the Italian colonial enemy as well as the supposed British protector. In short, she wanted Ethiopia to have the opportunity and resources to decide its fate outside of western rule.

Expedition from Abyssinia to Somaliland (1901)

by Major A.H.C Hanbury-TracyEdited and Introduced by Frederic A. Sharf with Richard Pankhurst

Book Information ISBN: 978-1-59907-045-2Format: Hardcover, 6”x9,” 152 pages, IllustrationsPrice: $24.95 Publication date: Spring 2009

About the Book:

By Major A. H. C. Hanbury—Tracy, Royal Horse Guards, Attached to the Abyssinian Forces Operating in the Ogaden

On his third deployment to Africa in 1901, 30-year old British officer Major H.C. Hanbury-Tracy was handed the unexpected assignment of serving with an Abyssinian Army. Becoming the first British officer in such a position, Tracy commanded the forces provided to him by Abbyssinian Emperor Menelik on a route from Abyssinia to Somaliland over the course of nearly seven months. During the march, Tracy and his army investigated the revolt of Somali tribes in the Ogaden region of modern day Ethiopia.

Like many British officers of his time, Tracy's wartime tone is revealed as strikingly sporting. However, his almost religious dedication to recording his observations paints a rarely unaltered portrait of his expedition and the events it describes. Despite being an experienced player in the military game as British officer in Africa during the early 1900s, the deployment was eerily Tracy's last in his military life.

In this book, Tracy's uncanny attention to an uninterrupted narrative of his day-to-day journey in East Africa takes shape in light of diplomatic records and the added historical complexities of the time. The story delves into the culture and tendencies of Victorian and Edwardian British army officers as much as it does the military underpinnings and mysteries of the Ethiopian region.

About the Editiors:

Frederic A. Sharf is a collector, scholar, and author. His interests lie in acquiring previously unpublished manuscript accounts written by men and women who observed events of historic significance in the period from 1865 to 1949 and making these accounts available to a worldwide audience.

Richard Pankhurst is a scholar and educator who has lived in Ethiopia for more than 30 years. He is a Professor at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies in Addis Ababa, as well as a prolific and respected author of numerous publications dealing with the history of Ethiopia.

About the Book:

The Evolution of the Ethiopian Jews is the most thorough scholarly study of Beta Israel history within Ethiopia yet written. It traces the development of the Ethiopian Jews from their controversial origins to the beginning of the twentieth century. The author places their evolution firmly within the Ethiopian social, ethnic, religious, political, and historical context, using analytical tools such as caste, class, and ethnicity.

Quirin shows how the Ethiopian Jews struggled to maintain their identity in the face of political, military, economic, and religious external pressures from the Ethiopian state and the dominant Christian society from the fourteenth through the early seventeenth centuries. He then analyzes their loss of political independence and partial assimilation into the society and state of the Gondar dynasty during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They faced new challenges and influences from European Protestant missionaries and western Jews in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Quirin employs an exhaustive use of Ethiopian and European written sources, as well as an original and careful use of internal oral traditions obtained in interviews with scores of Beta Israel and other informants.

The original edition of the book has been well reviewed in the leading journals in the field: Journal of African History, International Journal of African Historical Studies, American Historical Review, African Studies Review, Journal of Religion in Africa, Journal of Interdisciplinary History, American Anthropologist, L’Homme, Cahiers d’Etudes africaines, and the Journal of Semitic Studies among others. The Evolution of the Ethiopian Jews is thus of interest to students and scholars in the fields of Ethiopian and African History and Studies, and World Jewish history. It remains the leading work in the field.

About the Author:

James Quirin is a Professor of History at Fisk University where he has taught courses in African, European, and World History since 1981. His research interests include Ethiopian, African, World, and African American History and studies of other socio-ethnic groups in Ethiopian history. He has published more than 35 articles in journals, conference proceedings, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries on Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jews), Ethiopian, African, World, or African American and Fisk History. He has also published articles and more than twenty-five book reviews in leading journals.

Church and State in Ethiopia: 1270 - 1527

by Taddesse Tamrat

With forwards by Profs. Getatchew Haile and Donald Crummey

Reviews:

“The book by Dr. Taddesse Tamrat is an important contribution....In fact, the author shows his full and precise knowledge of past literature on Ethiopia, and his critical analysis of historical events is well founded on the results of recent work; but also—and this is an important novelty—he had access to hagiographical and historical documents, kept in Ethiopian monasteries, which had not previously been known to scholars.”

— Professor Enrico Cerulli, in BSOAS, Vol. 37, 1972

“Once in a long while, books are written that set the standard in their discipline. Taddesse Tamrat’s Church and State has been just such a book, a classic in Ethiopian historiography, unsurpassed in its painstaking reconstruction of the medieval history of Ethiopia. Few historians have used the rich historical data of the gadl literature as exhaustively and as meticulously as Taddesse has done, teasing out crucial information as only an Ethiopian versed in church traditions could do. Equally significant for the value of the book has been the blending of these Ethiopian traditional sources with the rich contemporary Arabic sources and the commentaries and analyses of such authorities as Carlo Conti Rossini. In short, what Taddesse has done through this masterly reconstruction is to blaze the trail that other Ethiopian historians have followed, a process that culminated in the growth and ripening of professional Ethiopian historiography.”

— Professor Bahru Zewde is the author of A History of Modern Ethiopia

About the Author:

Professor Taddesse Tamrat taught at the Department of History, Addis Ababa University, for over three decades before he retired in 2000. In addition, he served there as Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, Dean of the College of Social Sciences, and Editor/Director of the Addis Ababa University Press. He also taught at various American Universities: UCLA (1973); Bucknell (1973-75); Northwestern (1975-76) and UIUC (1992-93). During his sabbatical year in France (1985-86) he gave the November 1985 Lectures at the renowned Académie Franæaise. He was elected Honorary Fellow of SOAS, University of London in 1992. The Diary of Major R. G. T. Bright

Edited by Frederic A. Sharf with Richard Pankhurst

About the Book:

At the end of the 19th Century, there was a keen interest in exploring East Africa. There was a considerable opinion differences among the European powers regarding control over vast expanses of unexplored territory. Appropriate boundaries between existing political entities proved difficult to define.

This book presents the experiences of an articulate eye-witness—a participant in the process of exploration and boundary demarcation. Bright’s diary entries are remarkable for their detail and insight. He was a candid observer of places which were at the time largely unknown to the outside world. He was a meticulous record-keeper, with a keen eye for details. His diaries thus offer an unusual insider’s look at the evolution of British colonial policy, as well as providing a factual account of daily life on these expeditions.

In presenting this diary, it is the editor’s hope that an obscure but important aspect of the history of East Africa in the late 19th century will be illuminated. The introductory material is designed to make its significance more apparent to those who are not familiar with the times and places involved.

About the Editors:

Frederic A. Sharf is a collector, scholar, and author. His interests lie in acquiring previously unpublished manuscript accounts written by men and women who observed events of historic significance in the period from 1865 to 1949 and making these accounts available to a worldwide audience.

A Political History of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (1975-1991)

Revolt, Ideology, and Mobilisation in Ethiopia

by Aregawi Berhe, Ph.D.

About the Book:

A Political History of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (1975-1991) provides a comprehensive and critical firsthand account of the origin and development of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and of its rise to power. It begins with theoretical considerations of the various understandings of ethnicity and self-determination and of the diverse strategies of ethno-nationalist politics such as autonomy and secession. It examines the relevance of these theories and the strategies of their applications in the historical and ethnic context of Ethiopia and the political and ideological challenges of mobilizing peasants to engage in a protracted political struggle and guerilla warfare in a multi-ethnic peasant society.

Reviews:

“... a must read... [with] an insightful insider’s account of the origins and development of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, including critical divergences on objectives and strategy that have played a key role in shaping its course.”

—Prof. Martin Doornbos, Institute of Social Studies, The Netherlands

“... a rigorous analysis of issues such as ethno-nationalism, self determination, and secession. This book is timely, comprehensive, insightful, and balanced.”

—Dr. Getachew Metaferia, Morgan State University, USA

“... this book stands out as a first hand account of the movement’s history ... rich in content, this book is bound to be controversial, especially given the author’s history and profile.”

—Prof. Dr. Tesfatsion Medhanie, University of Bremen, Germany

About the Author:

Aregawi Berhe, Ph.D. is a former student at Haile Selassie I University. He left school to join the TPLF as a founding member and combated the emerging military dictatorship in post 1974 Ethiopian Revolution. Until he was forced into exile, he served the Front as its Commander. Currently, he is a founding member of the Tigraian Alliance for National Democracy (TAND) and member of the Ethiopian opposition coalition the United Ethiopian Democratic Front (UEDF), a “wing” of which has seats in the current Ethiopian parliament. He lives in the Netherlands.

Tradition and Change in Ethiopia

Social and Cultural Life as Reflected in Amharic Fictional Literature (1930-1974)

by Reidulf Knut Molvaer

About this Book:

A longtime scholar of Ethiopian history and Amharic writings, Reidulf Molvaer crafted a thesis with the intent of understanding Ethiopian history from new and rejuvenating perspectives. The resulting work, Tradition and Change in Ethiopia: Social and Cultural Life as Reflected in Amharic Fictional Literature, is a sweeping study of the importance of fictional writing as a barometer for the culture and lifestyle within which it is crafted.

In the introduction, Molvaer writes: “Authors have at all times acted as a kind of “conscience” of society, and in their writings they include their own evaluation of social institutions and customs in the country.” With this volume, the author looks at 12 influential Ethiopian writers that wrote as a reflection of their changing society, no matter their economic, social, or cultural standing. The turbulence of the 20th century came at a time when literature in Amharic first began to break out, and everything from the class structure of society and the forms of private relationships to the attitudes towards change and new aspirations are described as they are found within the texts. Within the words of the authors, albeit fictional, comes an understanding of what their eyes had seen and what their ears had heard.

Reviews:

“…a research of the kind carried out by R.K. Molavaer is not only justified but also useful as a supplement to the extant books on sociology and political science dealing with Ethiopia… R.K. Molavaer’s book is a very useful contribution to the knowledge of contemporary Ethiopia. The author deserves the warmest praise for his mastery of Amharic and his thoroughness.”

— Olga Kapeliuk, professor emeritus of Linguistics and African Studies, Israel

About the Author:

Reidulf Knut Molvaer is an Ethiopian scholar who authored Socialization and Social Control in Ethiopia, in addition to translating and editing Prowess, Piety and Politics: The Chronicle of Abeto Iyasu and Empress Zeqditu (1909-1930), as well as Black Lions: The Creative Lives of Modern Ethiopia’s Literary Giants and Pioneers. About the Book:

Zerihun Yetmgeta is one of the most famous contemporary Ethiopian artists. He was born in Addis Ababa in 1941 and from early in his life showed a special talent for art.

He is one of the few internationally known artists that chose not to study abroad, to keep his art as authentically Ethiopian and African as possible, and, even though he traveled all over the world, his art reflects the culture of his country. He has worked with many materials, from oils to acrylic paints on canvass to wood, bamboo and sheep skin. The term that describes his technique the best is “mixed,” and that not only applies to the materials, but also to the themes of his art. He’s a master in combining modernity with tradition at all levels, from medium to images. His work also includes print making pieces using lithography, woodcut, and silk screen. He’s most known for his paintings using bamboo strips. This catalog features an essay about his body of work, interview, biography, and representation of art works that spans forty years.

Unionists and Separatists

The Vagaries of Ethio-Eritean Relation, 1941-1991

by Shumet Sishagne

About the Book:

Based on a broad range of local and foreign archival sources, Unionists and Separatists, presents a comprehensive account of the history of Ethio-Eritrean relations over the last half of the twentieth century. Starting with the end of Italian colonialism in Eritrea in 1941 and the struggle for freedom that ensued thereafter, the book traces the evolution of domestic and external forces that decisively influenced the Eritrean political landscape by closely examining the circumstances behind the creation and growth of the Ethio-Eritrean federation and the challenges which ultimately defeated it. Unionists and Separatists is the definitive history of the tragic and complicated relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Reviews:

“…few people are either aware of or bother to investigate the historical roots of this recent conflict - roots that go back to the expulsion of the Italian colonial rulers from Eritrea in 1941. The publication of Shumet Sishagne’s book is therefore a salutary step in providing this much-needed historical perspective…exhaustive and comprehensive…extensive…as well as critical… Shumet has given us a masterly analysis...”

— Bahru Zewde, author of A History of Modern Ethiopia

“…a remarkable appraisal of the history of the Eritrean nationalist movement. In a comprehensively documented analysis, he makes excellent use of archival sources, official and private papers, and interviews in explaining the history of Eritrea and its relation with Ethiopia… His lucid commentary…is highly recommended for all readers who seek to understand the turbulent Horn of Africa.”

— Theodore M. Vestal, author of Ethiopia: a Post-Cold War African State

About the Author:

Shumet Sishagne is an Associate Professor of History and Chair of the Department of History at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. Wax and Gold

Tradition and Innovation in Ethiopian Culture

by Donald N. Levine

Book Information ISBN: 1-59907-003-0 Format: Softcover, 6”x 9”, 334 pages, Illustrations Price: $34.95Publication date: January 2007

About the Book:

This unique interpretation of Ethiopian society uses the tools of history, sociology, anthropology, and psychology to examine the traditional culture of the Amhara, its enduring values and beliefs, and what aspects of modern culture interest this society. It also considers the means by which it has sought to institutionalize modern culture while also asking: how does tradition both facilitate and impede Ethiopian efforts to modernization? Donald Levine looks on Amhara culture as a history, an outlook on life, a way of growing, a social structure, a psychological orientation, and, finally, as a “combination of opposites.” With acuity and sensitivity, he describes the strains upon the traditional culture made by the needs for modernization and the problems which face young and old in making this rapid transition. Since its first publication forty years ago, Wax and Gold has became a basic source for the studies of Ethiopia and a provocative model for the study of Africa and other modernizing nations.

Reviews:

“…a pioneering work… an Ethiopian classic. The very concept of Wax and Gold has taken a life of its own: it figures at once in our understanding of Ethiopia’s pre-modern culture and in our coming to grips with Ethiopia’s reception of modernity.”

— Andreas Eshete, President, Addis Ababa University

“Ethiopia’s abiding problem is the symbol of her autochthonous civilization with the demands of an uncompromising modern world. To the extent that she possesses a venerable culture of her own, problems of adjustment will here be graver than elsewhere in Africa. Nobody has yet described this dilemma, its origin, its magnitude and possible ways of resolving it with greater ability and understanding than Dr. Levine.”

— Edward Ullendorff, Times Literary Supplement

About the Author:

Donald N. Levine is the Peter B. Ritzma Professor of Sociology and former dean of the College at the University of Chicago. For nearly half a century he has been devoted to Ethiopia as a scholar and teacher, providing expert assistance to various government bodies, and performing community service on behalf of Ethiopians at home and abroad.

The Evolution of Ethiopian Absolutism

About the Book:

Since the early 1970s, Ethiopia has witnessed swift and profound changes. The “Sun King,” Haile Selassie I, was dethroned by a middleclass revolution and labeled the “prominent reactionary.” The myth of Ethiopia as the breadbasket of the Horn of Africa was shattered by hunger and starvation taking its toll of millions of lives. A country whose culture was said to be based on the philosophy of human love turned into a place of terror, torture, and dead corpses on the streets. This book analyzes the appearance of a new type of power centralization synchronized with Ethiopia’s integration into an international system and capitalist world economy. It presents an alternative understanding on the structural problems of economic development.

Reviews:

“…a work of painstaking research which deserves the attention of those engaged in the study of the economic basis of Ethiopia. The author…succeeds considerably…for addressing the issues with remarkable conscientiousness and a reasonable degree of competence.”

— Professor Bahru Zewde, Addis Ababa University

“It stresses that the foundations of the modern state rested on an increased military capacity, rather than on reforms which might promote economic development.”

— Professor Donald Crummey, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

“…an important contribution to an understanding of the development of Ethiopian statehood… conveys the systematized process of revenue collection that dispels any impression that the Ethiopian state depended on the extraction of resources from looting peripheral territories…the research (which can develop) into a path-breaking reappraisal of the fiscal bases of the Ethiopian state…”

— Professor Christopher Clapham, Lancaster University

Tsegaye Tegenu is a professor in the History Department of Uppsala University in Sweden, where he also received his Ph.D. in Economic History. Priests & Politicians

Protestant & Catholic Missions in Orthodox Ethiopia (1830-1868)

by Donald Crummey

Book Information ISBN: 978-1-59907-021-6Format: Perfect bound, 6”x9,” 176 pagesPrice: $19.95Publication date: September 2007

About the Book:

Priests and Politicians is a contribution to a growing literature on Christian missions in Africa. Covering an early phase of nineteenth century activities which is still poorly represented in African scholarship, this study entails an extensive use of English, French, Swiss, and Italian archives. The main thematic emphasis is political interaction: the central role of missionaries in the genesis of modern Afro-European relations and the apparent motives of Ethiopian leaders in dealing with representatives of an alien society. A variety of missionary strategies is revealed and discussed with particular reference to the attitudes towards the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the degree to which missionaries identified Christianity with European culture.

Reviews:

“…a valuable study of the interaction between religion and politics in Ethiopia’s renewed contacts with Europe during the nineteenth century… one of the first to … bring to light the distinctive methods used by [Protestant and Catholic] mission groups in the unique political and religious milieu of Ethiopia… a significant addition to the comparative study of Christian missions in Africa in general.”

— Tadesse Tamrat, author of Church and State in Ethiopia, 1270-1527

“The pioneering monograph on nineteenth-century Protestant and Catholic missions in Ethiopia… the most valuable entree we have into the different positions within Ethiopian Christian theology. While religiously attuned, the author’s perspective is explicitly multi-dimensional. Employing a copious range of rare archival sources, Crummey’s book depicts insightfully fascinating lineaments of Ethiopian political history as well as the heroisms and follies of certain European personalities.”

— Donald Levine, author of Greater Ethiopia and Wax and Gold

About the Author:

Donald Crummey received his Ph.D. in African History from the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University in 1967. From 1967 to 1973 he was a member of the History Department of Addis Ababa University. In 1973 he joined the faculty of the University of Illinois where he is a Professor Emeritus.

Book InformationISBN: 1-59907-019-7Format: Softcover, 6”x 9,” 307 pagesPrice: $24.95Publication date: September 2007

About the Book:

In September 1974, after forty-four years as ruler of Ethiopia, Emperor Haile Selassie, The Lion of Judah, was deposed. Patrick Gilkes uses detailed and often confidential sources in his examination of government corruption, land tenure and the tragic famine, the revolutionary student movement which played a major part in the build-up of criticism of the Emperor, and other forms of opposition. The book is a valuable analysis of political and economic power in a developing country, placing the causes and symptoms of failure to modernize in perspective while also looking at the feudal system’s contribution to the collapse of power.

Reviews:

“The book is one of the seminal works produced at that unique moment in history when the ancient regime in Ethiopia was dying and the new revolutionary order was being born. As such it sits astride two eras, dissecting clinically the order that was in its twilight hours and anticipating the new one that was in its birth throes.”

— Professor Bahru Zewdie, Author of Modern History of Ethiopia

“The original edition of The Dying Lion, published in 1975, quickly became a classic. The dramatic story of the decline and eventual collapse of Haile Selassie’s monarchy remains a seminal event in Ethiopia’s modern history. Tsehai Publishers is to be congratulated for reprinting this important study for a new generation of readers.”

— Dr. Thomas Ofcansky, Co-Author of Historical Dictionary of Ethiopia

About the Author:

Patrick Gilkes studied at Balliol College, Oxford; St. John’s College, Cambridge; and the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University. In 1964 he went to Ethiopia to teach and took up full time research in 1970. He was deported in 1972 for political involvement and is now a freelance journalist specializing in African Affairs.

About the Book:

In Ethiopia: Judaism, Altars, and Saints, Dr. Munro-Hay shares three intriguing aspects of Ethiopia’s endlessly fascinating history.

The first subject of inquiry is the claim that an ancient and profound Judaic influence underlies Ethiopian Christianity. The second theme concerns the tabot, the altar boards of the churches of Ethiopia. The final section is devoted to exploration of legends concerning the foreign missionaries who were supposed to have come to the country in the fifth and sixth centuries, the so-called Nine Saints.

The study of these three themes not only offers a glimpse into the riches of Ethiopia’s literary and ecclesiastical tradition, but adds new perspectives to our interpretation of Ethiopia’s enigmatic past.

Ethiopia Unveiled

Interaction between Two Worlds

by Stuart Munro-Hay

About the Book:

Ethiopia Unveiled explores some unusual and exotic aspects of an intriguing topic: Ethiopia’s presentation to, and reaction to, the outside world over a period of several hundred years. The lands concerned are European Mediterranean countries, Italy, Spain and Portugal, as well as Yemen, Egypt, and Palestine, where the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusalem was the goal of innumerable Ethiopian pilgrims.

Some years ago, as a visiting professor at Humboldt University at Berlin lecturing on Ethiopian History, the author noticed how surprised the students were to hear of the sometimes quite vigorous interaction between European medieval powers and remote, but Christian, Ethiopia. Despite the incredible difficulties of communication—even with closer neighbors like Egypt, Jerusalem or the Yemen, transmission was far from easy—there are letters and reports still preserved concerning Ethiopian relations not just with Egyptian sultans and patriarchs and Yemeni imams, but also with European kings and popes. Egyptian correspondence mainly concern church matters or sometimes the Nile, though the vague fantastic dream of converting an Ethiopian Christian king to Islam surfaced in Yemen messages. The European contacts are perhaps more surprising and include accreditations of ambassadors, schemes for joint anti-Muslim military action, and even marriage proposals. In later times the association between the two very different worlds that Ethiopia and Europe represented increased, and understanding became obscured by the intermingling of legendary additions: the Queen of Sheba, for example, or Prester John, or the story of the blocking of the Nile to starve Muslim Egypt.

Ethiopia At Bay

A Personal Account of the Haile Selassie Years

by John H. Spencer

About the Book:

The topic of Ethiopia’s foreign affairs is as interesting as it is broad, ranging a host of issues, from Mussolini’s attempt to take control of Ethiopia during the reign of Emperor Haile Sellassie and Ethiopia’s requests for help from the international community, to the secession of Eritrea and attempts made by the Soviet Union to reduce Ethiopia to a communist satellite state. In Ethiopia at Bay, Spencer provides an account of all these issues. As principal adviser to the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Spencer offers a confidential, insider’s view of Ethiopia’s relations with the rest of the world, making it an indispensable contribution to studies in political science, foreign affairs, colonialism, Africa, and Ethiopian history.

Reviews:

“A marvelous recounting of Ethiopian and world history during those years. Mandatory reading for anyone interested in Third World relations and certainly for anyone who seeks to understand contemporary Ethiopian or Horn of Africa affairs.”

— Foreign Service Journal

“A significant primary source in its first hand account by a meticulously observant insider.”— Foreign Affairs

“Commands attention and respect. John Spencer’s personal, candid, and basically reliable record will have an honored place in the contemporary annals of that tortured country.”

— Times Literary Supplement

“Valuable indeed, especially significant is Spencer’s cogent analysis of the Emperor himself. Recommended for college, university, and larger public libraries.”

— Choice

Enough with Famines in Ethiopia

A Clarion Call

by Fassil G. Kiros

Book Information ISBN: 1-59907-002-2Format: Paperback, 6”x9,” 201 pages, IllustrationsPrice: $19.95Publication date: January 2006

About the Book:

In 2002 Ethiopia was ushered into the twenty-first century by the threat of famine of unprecedented proportion, it amounted to a virtual acknowledgement that the country’s past national development goal had been little more than a pipe dream, for no claim of development can be made in the face of mass starvation.

It is argued that lasting food security can only be achieved by means of an interactive development process involving the sustainable development of agriculture and an increasingly diversified national economy. In this work, the main questions which concern many people are addressed directly. Wherefrom are the investment resources to be obtained, and where are the capacities to be summoned to promote the scale and tempo of the development envisaged? Examples are offered of measures to be considered in response to development challenges. The primary instrument for unleashing this potential is the political. Ultimately, both the ends of development and the means by which they might be attained must derive impetus from the cravings and drive of ordinary people acting individually or collectively.

About the Author:

Fassil G. Kiros is an economist who has dedicated the major part of his career to teaching and research at the Addis Ababa University. He has also served as Vice-President of the University and as a Dean of the College of Business Administration. He has been appointed as visiting scholar and lectured at a number of the major universities in the U.S. and in Africa and has participated in numerous national and international scholarly forums. He also served for a number of years as a member of the Africa Committee of the U.S. Social Science Research Council. He has committed himself to research on the root causes of rural poverty and to advocating the cause of the rural poor in Ethiopia. As a founding member and the first Executive Secretary of the Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA), he has also promoted research on the multi-faceted problems of poverty and underdevelopment in Africa at large.

About the Book:

State and Land in Ethiopian History focuses on the relationship between the State and land tenure problems and the exclusion of significant aspects of customary land tenure in Ethiopia. It describes the major role played by the monarchy in the system of land holdings over the long span of the country’s recorded history. This book traces the changing fortunes of the fluctuating powers of the monarchy, as well as examines the theoretical basis of its authority as formulated in contemporary writings. It also examines the manner in which the State affected the system of land tenure from Aksumite times to the eve of the Italian invasion of 1935. A chronological approach has been attempted wherever possible, as well as explanation of the significant changes and the continuity characterized by the history of Ethiopian land tenure.

This book also covers the allocation of land by the sovereigns to the nobility, provincial governors, and other officers of State; land grants to churches and monasteries; the operation of royal farms; the establishment of State capitals and their effect on systems of land tenure; land ownership by foreigners and minority groups; taxation, tribute, labor service and other obligations based on or related to the holding of land as well as landlord tenant relations. Consideration is also paid to land problems related to the developments of the Menilek-Haile Sellassie period, including roads and the railways and, in the case of Eritrea, the impact of foreign rule, and the legislation of the period which witnessed the foundations of a modern State.

About the Editors:

Richard Pankhurst is the founder and first Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies of Addis Ababa University. He is currently Chair of the Society of Friends of the Institute, as well as a founding member of the Committee for the Return of the Aksum Obelisk and of AFROMET: the Association for the Return of Maqdala Ethiopian Treasures. About the Book:

The Sons of Sheba’s Race illustrates the response African-Americans had to the Italo-Ethiopian War by linking the Ethiopian struggle to their own battles against racism and imperialism and making Ethiopia a historical symbol for African-Americans. William R. Scott challenges the view that the Great Depression virtually ended support for black nationalism, showing elements of the nationalist creed remained crucial to black American ideology a decade after the decline of Garveyism and contributed to African-American sympathy for Ethiopia. Focusing on the pro-Ethiopian activities of the Harlem united front, which brought together black nationalists, communists, and civil rights moderates, Scott shows the extensive elite and grassroots interest in Ethiopia’s fate and the widespread recognition that Ethiopia’s independence was extremely important to black pride while also examining the issue of Ethiopian racial identity, the controversy over this issue, and its effect on African-American support for the Ethiopian cause.

Reviews:

…the work of a master-historian. It is the distillation of a life-time of study of Ethiopia’s relations with the Black World and a foundational work for the study of Ethiopianism. Simultaneously immensely erudite and passionate in its devotion... we can expect still further advances in the appreciation of Ethiopia and Ethiopianism as constitutive of the worldview of African Americans and the peoples of the worldwide African Diaspora.

—Robert A. Hill, Editor-in-Chief for The Marcus Garvey & UNIA Papers, Professor of History at UCLA

…an excellent work that helps to fill an important gap in recent scholarship on Afro-American interest in Africa and efforts by Afro-Americans to influence American foreign affairs regarding the Black World.

—Robert L. Harris, Jr. is a professor of African-American History.

About the Author:

William R. Scott is a professor of History and Director of African-American Studies at Lehigh University. He is author of many articles on Ethiopianism and Ethiopian and African-American relations.

Meskel

An Ethiopian Family Saga

by Mellina and Lukas FanourisForeword by Lig Affa-Wossen Asserate

Book Information ISBN: 0-9748198-9-1Format: Paperback, 6”x9”, 294+vii pages, Illustrations Price: $24.95Publication date: July 2005

About the Book:

In September 1981, a four-seater aircraft mounted into a scorched sky from an African desert track carrying two brothers to freedom. As Lukas Fanouris looked down and saw the Meskel flower in bloom everywhere, he wept, for the carpet of Meskel around Addis Ababa had been the first sight to meet his father’s eyes when he had arrived in 1926 with his wife and infant son. The story of Manoli Fanouris is told in a detailed and intimate way by his son – from his initial arrival in Ethiopia to his becoming a close associate of Emperor Haile Selasie during the time of his overthrow by a military revolution in 1974. While the new dictatorship proclaimed the Emperor was under arrest, members of his family and his ministers were thrown into the cells of common criminals. Princes, ministers, and high government officials were executed en masse and flung into an unmarked trench. Meskel is the true and poignant saga of a Greek family who lived to witness and record the devastating destruction of a beautiful country which was turned into a living hell by the tyrant Mengistu Haile Mariam.

Reviews:

“..well told…a credible account… [and] a satisfying conclusion.” — Shlomo Bachrach, author of Ethiopian Falk Tells

“Meskel illustrates the history, culture, and traditions of this ancient Empire, famed for the dynasties of the Queen of Sheba, Tewodros, Menelik, and Haile Selassie. This book reminds us all of family values and human solidarity.”

— Fekrou Kidane, Coordinator, International Olympic Committee

About the Authors:

Mellina and Lukas Fanouris were both born in Addis Ababa. Their parents were Greek immigrants who had made a new life in Ethiopia, settled, prospered, and instilled in their children an enduring love and respect for the culture and people of Ethiopia. Gabby, their only daughter, was also born in Addis Ababa, but was forced to flee with her mother when Emperor Haile Selassie was overthrown. Lukas was not permitted to leave and had to survive as best he could in the military regime that followed. Despite danger, hardship, and prolonged separation, their love has survived and the family lives today in Nairobi, Kenya.

Ethiopia in Wartime: 1941-1942

A Memoir Written by Brian Fraser Macdona with Supplemental Documents

Edited by Frederic A. Sharf with Commentary and Annotation by Professor Richard Pankhurst

About the Book:

The Liberation Campaign of 1940-41 was not only an event of unique importance in Ethiopia’s age-old history, but also a major ‘turning-point’ in World War II: the conflict fought out in East Africa between the Allies and the Axis Powers. The campaign, historically speaking, was significant in the overall drama of Africa’s liberation from European colonial rule, and the ending of the foreign-imposed Scramble for Africa. This remarkable book provides a valuable account of how these momentous events appeared to an eye-witness of the time.

Reviews:

“... lively and witty narrative, [Macdona’s] memoir demonstrates his rare skill for observation and passion for documentation...providing a unique eyewitness account of a highly neglected historical period. Sometimes opinionated but always thoughtful and stimulating...an informative and engaging memoir that should be required reading for anyone interested in the critical period of East African history, in general, and the ex-Italian possessions, in particular.”

— Haile M. Larebo, Associate Professor of History at Morehouse College. He is the author of The Building of an Empire: Italian Land Policy and Practice in Ethiopia, 1935-1941

“...written by a career banker who narrates how they put the banks back into operation and how finally they sorted out…the “currency chaos” in the Horn of Africa following the liberation of Ethiopia…. Written with a great deal of verve and humor…it fills a yawning gap in our knowledge

– the tedious task of establishing administration, particularly banks and currencies and the exchange rate after the dramatic events of war were over. The story is every bit as important as the clashes of arms.”

— Shiferaw Bekele, teaches Modern and Contemporary Ethiopian History in the Department of History, Addis Ababa University.

Frederic A. Sharf is a scholar who specializes in art, photography, and unpublished manuscript material relating to wars fought during the several decades before and after 1900.

The 1903 Skinner Mission to Ethiopia & A Century of Ethiopian-American Relations

by Robert P. Skinner, David H. Shinn (Introduction) and Aurelia E. Brazeal (Preface)

About the Book:

This book features Skinner’s 1903-1904 mission to Ethiopia which resulted in the signing of a treaty between the United States and Ethiopia to regulate commercial relations. The year 1903 marks, therefore, the beginning of official contact between Ethiopia and the United States. 2003 commemorates the 100th anniversary of this bold initiative that launched an important relationship that continues to the present day. This marked one of the earliest official engagements by the United States to the interior of sub-Saharan Africa.

Reviews:

“… an excellent addition to the historical literature of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa… depth of mutual reliance between the two countries is masterly traced in this volume… [This] cogent narrative is a tour de force of the history of diplomatic ties between the United States and Ethiopia. I highly recommend this significant book.”

— Professor Theodore M. Vestal, Professor of Political Science, Oklahoma State University.

About the Author and Editors:

Robert P. Skinner was the first official American representative to Ethiopia and served as U.S. Consul General in Marseille, 1906; Berlin, 1914; London, 1916-24; U.S. Minister to Greece, 1926-32; Estonia, 1931-33; Lativia, 1931-33; Lithuania, 1931-33; U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, 1933-36. Skinner died in Belfast in 1960.

The Survival of Ethiopian Independence

by Sven Rubenson

Book Information ISBN: 0-9723172-7-9 Format: Softcover, 440 pages, 6”x 9”Price: $45.95Publication date: 2003

About the Book:

How did Ethiopia alone, of all the old states in Africa, preserve its independence throughout the era of European colonization? Professor Rubenson has devoted his attention to this fundamental question in the modern history of the ancient kingdom. His analysis of nineteenth-century contacts between Ethiopians and foreigners is based on contemporary Ethiopian documents and demonstrates how neither physical inaccessibility nor lack of determination by imperial powers to subdue the country that saved Ethiopia from colonization. This book has much to offer to those interested in the mechanisms by which the Europeans created dependence in Africa. However, its main objective is to provide the Ethiopian side of the story.

Reviews:

“The questions it raises about the material and psychological pre-conditions for colonial conquest represent a crucial contribution to African history as a whole.”

— West Africa

“No other scholarly work that tries to holistically cover this ancient country comes close to the detail, authority and assiduous research … put into the book… a work that valiantly celebrates the Ethiopian peoples’ stubborn resistant to colonialism and the mystical martyrdom of its children to keep it independent during the last several hundred years.”

— Dr. Paulos Milkias, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science, Marianopolis College and Concordia University

“… considerably advances our knowledge. It certainly will become the principle reference work for a very long time to come… the author has set a high standard for all future studies by meticulously removing the European veneer from documents and their interpretation.”

— The International Journal of African Historical Studies

About the Author:

Sven Rubenson was educated at the University of Lund to which he submitted his L.Phil. dissertation on Ethiopian History in 1954. A missionary, teacher, and educational administrator in Ethiopia since 1947 and former Headmaster of the Ethiopian Evangelical College, Debre Zeyt from 1953 to 1958, he also taught at Addis Ababa University in the history department in the 1960s.

Letters from Abyssinia: 1916 and 1917

Major Hugh Drummond Pearson, R. E.

Transcribed and Edited by Frederic A. SharfCommentary and Annotation by Richard Pankhurst

Book Information ISBN: 0-9748198-0-8Format: Hardcover, 265 pages, 6”x9,” illustrationsPrice: $30.00Publication date: January 2004

About the Book:

Letters from Abyssinia: 1916 and 1917 explores the complicated position which Ethiopia (formerly Abyssinia) occupied in the beginning of 20th century politics. Major Pearson’s letters provide a unique vantage point for examining the interests of the major world powers in this fiercely independent country – the only country in Africa not then under some European domination. Pearson’s observations have been integrated with official Foreign Office communications in order to provide the reader with a complete context, appealing not only to scholars of Ethiopian history, but also those interested in the effects of World War I, which impacted many distant nations, that provide the setting for Pearson’s letters: Egypt, Sudan, Abyssinia, French and British Somaliland.

Reviews:

“... this book is a gold mine whose contents, when sifted and pruned, give serviceable facts pertaining to people, regions, and institutions… Without these letters, we would hardly have known much about the numerous individuals and exigencies involved in the Anglo-Ethiopian Blue Nile project as well as the secondary events which occurred around the Red Sea.”

— Dr. Bairu Tafla, Professor of History at University of Hamburg

“…a most valuable resource for scholars interested in the study of post-Menelik Ethiopia… a much needed addition to the sources on this crucial period in Ethiopian history…The editors of Letters from Abyssinia should be commended not only for bringing Pearson’s letters and reports together, but for the meticulous work they have done to place these sources in context and to provide the supplementary sources obtained from the British Foreign Office.”

— Dr. Shumet Sishagne, Associate Professor and Chair of the History Department Christopher Newport University

Futuh Al-Habasa

The Conquest of Abyssinia

by Sihab ad-Din Ahmad (Al Faqi) Translated by Paul Lester Stenhouse with annotations by Richard Pankhurst

About the Book:

Sihab ad-Din Ahmad bin ‘Abd al-Qader’s account of the early sixteenth century Jihad, or holy war, of Imam Ahmad bin Ibrahim, better known as Ahmad Gran, or the Left Handed, in Ethiopia is a historical classic. As an eyewitness to several of the battles described, the Yamani author is an invaluable source. The ‘Futuh al-Habasa’ or ‘Conquest of Abyssinia’ resulted in an occupation ended by the death of Imam in battle, whereupon his army almost immediately disintegrated. This book, which is full of human, and at times tragic, drama, makes a major contribution to our knowledge of a crucially important period in the history of Ethiopia and Horn of Africa with a degree of objectivity rare for narration during the time period.

Reviews:

“… the first ever complete English translation of the Arabic account on the campaigns of Imam Ahmad b. Ibrahim al-Ghazi (popularly known as Gran)… a welcome addition to the rich corpus of Arabic literary sources relevant to the sixteenth-century Ethiopia and the Horn… particularly useful for English-speaking researchers and established scholars… with both Stenhouse and Pankhurst, and the publisher, deserving high commendation.”

— Hussein Ahmed, the leading historian of Islam in Ethiopia, was a Professor of History in Addis Ababa University.

About the Editors:

Paul Lester Stenhouse is a Catholic priest and a member of the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Issoudun, France. He has spent all his priestly life as a journalist. He is a foundation member and a member of the Council of the Societe d’Etudes Samaritaines.

Artists on Campaign

by Frederic A. Sharf with Professor David Northrup and Professor Richard Pankhurst

Book Information ISBN: 0-9723172-4-4Format: 8.5”x11,” paperback, Illustrations, 96 pagesPrice: $19.95Publication date: May 2003

About this Book:

Abyssinia, 1867-1868 holds a collection of works from artists Robert Baigrie and William Simpson while they were enlisted in military campaigns. These unique works show the nature of imperialist conquests and the toil of Ethiopians. They document this important era in Ethiopian history from the perspective of soldiers participating in the imperialist project.

Reviews:

“… an era of adventurous expeditions comes alive with the rugged and taunting scenes of the land of the Abyssinians…a fascinating tableau of an important era. An anecdote of military expedition adventures, war booties, and hero’s and heroines gives...a new perspective to a period in the history of European imperialism and the colonial invasion of Africa by Europe. Narrative notes accompanied with each illustration allow for contextual analysis of the illustrations…Overall the book is an essential historic document.”

— Achamyeleh Debela is a Professor of Art and Computer Graphics at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina.

“…a succinct and readable presentation of the historical background…with insight into the relationship between Ethiopia and the outside world prevailing in the mid-19th century…in the Ethiopian context….Both Ethiopianists and lovers of military art will be grateful…”

— Ian Campbell is an Economist and Cultural Resources Specialist at The World Bank in Washington.

Sylvia Pankhurst

About the Book:

Sylvia Pankhurst, the British Suffragette, devoted the last forty years of her life to fighting anti-fascism and supporting Ethiopia. She responded to Mussolini's invasion of the country in 1935 by founding a weekly newspaper called New Times and Ethiopia News, which she edited for twenty years. Her paper condemned Britain's "appeasement" of the Axis Dictators and supported the Republican Government in the Spanish Civil War. Ever against colonialism, she clashed with the British Government in demanding the full restoration of Ethiopian independence and advocated the "reunion" of the former Italian colony of Eritrea with Ethiopia. Having moved to Addis Ababa in 1956 with her son, the author of this book, she founded a monthly journal called the Ethiopia Observer, which focused on many aspects of Ethiopian life and development. She died in 1960 and was buried with the Ethiopian Patriots, in front of Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa and in the presence of the Emperor.

Reviews:

“Based on unpublished correspondence from the last 25 years of Sylvia Pankhurst’s life, this fascinating work offers unique insights into the final campaign of a great campaigning journalist.”

—Nicholas Rankin, author of Telegram from Guernica: the extraordinary life of George Steer, war correspondent.

“A truly extraordinary and remarkable individual, the story of Sylvia Pankhurst stands as a human monument to the ideals of freedom and justice and fearlessness.”

—Robert A. Hill, Professor of History & Editor-in-Chief, The Marcus Garvey & UNIA Papers at UCLA

About the Author:

Professor Richard Pankhurst is Sylvia Pankhurst’s only child and was an adult throughout much of the period covered by this book. Using largely unpublished materials, he traces his mother’s opposition to Italian Fascism and advocacy of Ethiopian independence. The author, who bore witness to his mother’s political activities on behalf of Ethiopia and other victims of Fascism, is a historian of the country, where he resides with his wife Rita. He has written extensively on many aspects of Ethiopian history and is the author of a biography of his mother’s earlier life: Sylvia Pankhurst: Artist.

About the Book:

Diary of a Journey to Abyssinia 1868 features an original manuscript of a diary account by a leading Victorian journalist, William Simpson. The introductory materials by Pankhurst, Harrington, and Sharf give context and historical background to make the account meaningful to the modern reader. It recounts his experiences during a military expedition by the British army into the heart of Ethiopia (then called Abyssinia) in 1868. The Expedition to Magdala of 1867-1868 was a memorable event in British military history and in the history of Ethiopia. Meticulously planned and executed, the campaign caused the triumph of Sir Robert Napier and the suicide of the Ethiopian Emperor Tewodros II. This book demonstrates how manuscripts and other cultural artifacts taken from Magdala subsequently contributed significantly to the advancement of Ethiopian studies in Europe and how restitution to Ethiopia is now actively demanded.

Reviews:

“…a fascinating insight into one of the most bizarre military expeditions ever undertaken by the British army … [The diary] reflects not only the need to record the military aspects of Napier’s campaign for the magazine’s readers but also his interest in the culture, customs, and ceremonies of an ancient, remote, and mountain-locked outpost of Christianity. The Napier expedition may be an obscure episode in the annals of British military history, but in Ethiopia itself its effects still resonate to this day: not least in the looting of manuscripts and other treasures by British troops at Magdala. The campaign for their restitution to Ethiopia remains and will continue as a live and burning issue.”

— Stephen Bell, writer on Ethiopian history and an authority on the Napier expedition.

About the Editors:

Frederic A. Sharf is a scholar who specializes in art, photography, and unpublished manuscript material relating to wars fought during the several decades before and after 1900.

Peter Harrington Curator of the Ann S. K. Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, is the author of British Artists and War. He is the co-author (with Sharf) of over seven historical works.

Richard Pankhurst currently serves as Professor at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies in Addis Ababa. In addition to the numerous books and articles listed in the Bibliography, recent work includes The Ethiopians: A History (1998) in the series “The Peoples of Africa.”

Wit and Wisdom of Ethiopia

Compiled and Presented with Introduction, Annotations by Negussay Ayele

About the Book:

The volume at hand is a modest effort to share with the outside world the wit and wisdom of Ethiopia, which is too good to be kept bottled up in the native language of one land. Since Ethiopia is the original locus and habitat of the earliest homonids—homo afarensis/ramidus—every human being is in effect an Ethiopian and can therefore proudly claim the heritage of Wit and Wisdom presented in this volume.

Reviews:

“Wit and Wisdom Of Ethiopia has succeeded to express thoughtfully and elegantly the Ethiopian way of thinking. The proverbs encompass all aspects of everyday life and, as a result, the book will prove to be of great interest to Ethiopians and non-Ethiopians alike.”

— Professor Emeritus Wolf Leslau, UCLA

“Wit And Wisdom Of Ethiopia reflects the amazing genius and the wonderful soul of the people of Ethiopia. It is of great value to Ethiopian parents and their children, as well as friends of Ethiopia.”

— Dr Fikre Tolossa, Playwright

“…a singularly important book on the folk wisdom of an ancient people whose gift to humanity is unparalleled. It is a mansion of wisdom with many rooms.”

— Professor Robert Hill, UCLA

“Wit and Wisdom of Ethiopia is the first book in English of Amharic Ethiopian proverbs. As such, it is a significant contribution not only to the growing number of books about Ethiopia, but also to the world at large, which can only benefit from knowing Ethiopia.”

— Wendy Belcher, UCLA

“…a marvel of linguistic adaptation, composed with a glittering literary style and double entendre.”— Dr Paulos Milkias, Concordia College

About the Author:Negussay Ayele is a Professor of Political Science in the Bunche Center for African-American Studies at the University of California Los Angeles. He is an Ethiopian scholar of renown and author of a multitude of works on Ethiopia.
