Presentation Agenda
• Successes with Web 2.0 Tools• Challenges for students using
traditional school computers• Paridigm of "cloud computing"• Google Apps - Education Edition
obenefitsochallenges
• "cloud computing" and portability• Q & A
Important Concepts
• Do not use technology for technology sake – does it improve learning ?
Important Concepts
• A great way to learn a technology or new skill is on-line videos
Important Concepts
• Educators do not have to know how to use any of the technology they assign to students
• They just need to know what the technology can produce and how long it will take to complete the finished project
Teacher Comments
Student Reactions to Web 2.0 Tools
• I like moving around• this is a way to meet other students in the class• I enjoy using my hands• I get tired of writing all the time so podcasting is
a fun change• I work harder on these assignments because all
my friends in the class will see them• I enjoy creating assignments that look
professional• I like having the opportunity of showing my work
to a wider audience
However......
Despite the successes we experienced using Web 2.0 tools in the classroom, there were still technological challenges in the school.
What do you do if.....
Jason arrives to school with his World Issues ISU essay on a USB key. He tries to open it at school but is unable to because his word processor at home is incompatible with the school's word processor. His ISU essay is due in 20 minutes and Jason can't get home...
WHAT DO YOU DO?
What do you do if.....
Maria creates a presentation for her Law class on a Macintosh computer at home. Unfortunately all the computers at the school are PCs and she is unable to show her presentation. WHAT DO YOU DO?
What do you do if.....
You have assigned a group presentation in your ENG 4U1 class. In one group, three students have part-time jobs, two students are on the Rugby team and one student is trying to earn their 40 community hours. They are unable to get together after school to work on the group project due to their incompatible calendars. WHAT DO YOU DO?
What do you do if.....
You are teaching a grade 12 History course and the final June essays are due. One of your students comes to you and says that his computer crashed and he lost all his work. He's not sure when he will be able to submit the paper. WHAT DO YOU DO?
What do you do if.....
You have asked your Grade 10 Science class to do their class presentations using Power Point. Three students in your class tell you they are unable to do this assignment because they do not have this program on their home computers and there is a limited number of school computers with Power Point due to the licensing fees? WHAT DO YOU DO?
Challenges • These challenges often require the
TCT or Teacher-Librarian to leave their regular work.... and may require substantial time to resolve.
Challenges for the Teacher
• passwords have to be distributed every year• students' work is erased every year• not enough disk space to support Web 2.0 tools• limited ability for students to communicate with
each other electronically• teachers and students have different software
programs
Challenges for IT
• must maintain servers• backup• virus and spam protection• re-imaging of computers • purchase and upgrade software licences• limited ability to take advantage of students
using their own PDAs
Challenges - environment
•printing
Solution???
Cloud Computing
Could be the Answer to your Problems
Cloud Computing
• You are already using cloud computing
• Data is held on Internet servers• Programs which run the email
service are on Internet servers
Cloud Computing
Which means........• you only need a browser to access both
programs and data
Data, Programs, Communication Tools.... all in the cloud
Cloud Computing
Data, Programs, Communication Tools.... all in the cloud
Cloud Computing
Accessed by any computer or PDA
through an Internet connection
Cloud Computing
Programs now include:• word processor• spreadsheet• presentation software• the ability to share documents• calendars• communication services including video• software to create webpages/wikis
Cloud Computing Quotes
Obama’s new Chief Technology Officer Vivek Kundra"I’m all about the cloud computing"
Discussion on why the city of Washington DC changed to Google Apps
“were able to solve that problem for half a million dollars what would have cost ... $4 million"
Cloud Computing Quotes
"Frantic troubleshooting by an overworked staff versus someone else fixing problems smoothly. A sliver of server space per person versus a five-gigabyte chunk. Half a million dollars versus free. That's what colleges are faced with as they decide whether to continue running their own e-mail services or outsource them to a professional service like Google Apps Education Edition" Chronicle of Higher Education, 1/11/2008
Cloud Computing Quotes
"We can provide IT resources less expensively by thinking differently about the way we use the Internet. Providing access to computing resources by using the Internet is called computing in the cloud" "Cloud resources provide additional ways in which we can think differently in these difficult financial times. It is crucial to use these technologies as we look to the future." David Smallen , vice president Information technology- Hamilton College
Cloud Computing Quotes
"The school dumped its own e-mail program in exchange for Google Apps in 2007 .. it freed us up to concentrate on classroom applications" Kevin Roberts, chief information officer Abilene Christian University

• Works on any computer • PCs, Macs, Linux• Requires no hard drive space• Works on many PDAs
Cloud Computing
• “Our technology and information systems are a huge selling point for parents (who) may otherwise have doubts (of sending students to our school) ” Assistant Principal, Andrew Stillman
Cloud Computing
• Allows schools to easily communicate with parents
• Gives students software they can use at home without purchasing it (e.g. spreadsheets, PowerPoint)
• “Our veteran staff, almost without exception, asserts that this is the best classroom software they’ve ever encountered. ” Watershed School
Cloud Computing
• Provides each user with 7GB of space which is enough space for students to save podcast and video assignments
• Has no ads• Spam / Virus Checkers• Is a paperless solution... GREEN ! • Saves printing costs
Student's Opinion of Google Apps
Cloud Computing - Google Apps
• Documents are never lost – saves automatically
• Do not have to worry about not having the software or the correct version
• Can both upload and download documents off your hard drive
• Quick to set up • Easy to administrate
Cloud Computing - Google Apps
• Ability to share Assignments, documentsoStudent–studentoStudent–teacher-student
• Communicate using documents to parents
• Prevents plagiarism• Improves learning
Cloud Computing - Google Apps
• Can disable services• Have precise control of who has
access to what• Student login can last for their
entire school career and further
Google Apps - Challenges
• Need Internet access• Can save documents off line as MS
Word, PPT, RTF,Open Office• PDAs can access most features but
currently you cannot edit documents
Google Apps - Challenges
• Free version has limited audit features• Once an email is deleted from trash
there is no way to retrieve it
Google Apps - Challenges
• Your data is stored in another country• Patriot Act allows US government to
access your data• However....there is no documented case
where any government tapped into students or faculity google apps documents or emails
Google Apps- Quote
"Everyone saw the benefits of sharing notes, lesson plans, meeting minutes, and updates on kids more easily than ever before. We became unified as a team even before we moved the functionality into our classrooms."Jason Levy, Principal, New York City Intermediate School 339
Google Apps - Implementation
Step 1• you need to own a web domain that is
tied with your school• (can be purchased for about $12 per
year)
Google Apps - Implementation
Step 2• Go to the Google Apps - Education• Edition and register your school with the
domain name• - Google will contact you in and have it
set up in 1 - 6 weeks
Google Apps - Implementation
Step 3• Setup mapping on Internet Server to
provide email addresses off the domain name
• (easy)
Google Apps - Implementation
Step 4• Get a text file of students and teachers
which include first name, last name, login and password
• You could use the text file of students from Markbook.
• An initial can be substituted for the last name
Google Apps - Implementation
Step 5• Get a students to sign (with parents)code
of contact agreement click hereStep 6• Get teachers who are interested in
implementing Google Apps - Create a simple assignment which students share with their teacher
Google Apps - Implementation
Step 7• Give a 15 minute lesson to the classStep 8• 1st assignment is for students to email all
students in the class and say hi• 2nd assignment is to compete a shared
assignment with the teacher
