The Temiskaming Foundation
2011 was a busy year for the foundation but a very difficult and sad time for our
community. We lost a number of people in tragic circumstances. Four local
families established new funds in the name of their loved ones. Thus we added the
Danny Wilson Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Gordon Zubyck Memorial Fund, the
Carter Antila Skate Park Memorial Fund and the Denis Desjardins Colon Cancer
Awareness Campaign Fund to our family of funds.
There were a further 5 new funds added in 2011. These were: the Willie & Marie
Gelinas Fund, the Mary & William Elliott fund, the Laurel & Carrie Birtch Fund,
the Robert Pollock Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Community Cancer Care
Fund.
We have a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors at the Foundation. In 2011, we
thanked outgoing Directors Darlene Bowen & John Wowk for their contributions to
the foundation and welcomed Quen Lee and Jo Anne Plaunt as new Directors.
We also had some staffing changes as we wished Paulette Belanger a wonderful
retirement after 7 years as accounting clerk/admin assistant at the Foundation. We
thank her for all her hard work and hope she enjoys some well deserved time on the
golf course.
The Temiskaming Foundation in 2011 seems to have reached an unprecedented
level of public awareness. We understand that donors put great faith and trust in
our ability to fulfill their charitable goals. We have been working hard to assist
donors to reach their philanthropic goals, giving the Foundation a reputation for
stability, permanence and continuity.
You can see represented in this report, the generosity of your family, friends,
neighbours and community, we hope that you will be inspired to join them in
giving. Thank you for your continued generosity
Jeff Laferriere, President
N E W F U N DS of 2011
In 2011 we lost a number of people in tragic circumstances.
Four families decided to establish funds in the name of their
lost one. Thus we added the Danny Wilson Memorial
Scholarship Fund, the Gordon Zubyck Memorial Fund, the
Carter Antila Skate Park Memorial Fund and the Denis
Desjardins Colon Cancer Awareness Campaign Fund to our
group of funds.
There were a further 5 new funds added in 2011. These
were: the Willie & Marie Gelinas Fund, the Mary & William
Elliott Fund, the Laurel & Carrie Birtch Fund, the Robert
Pollock Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Community
Cancer Care Fund.
Danny Wilson Memorial Scholarship Fund
This Award is presented in memory of Danny Wilson who died when he was 17 in 2011. Danny was a student at TDSS and was a talented welder and loved to make and fix things. Danny will be remembered as an athlete who enjoyed many sports and also remembered as a good friend to many and a wonderful brother and son. The 2011 recipient was Markus Jeffery.
Gordon Zubyck Memorial Fund
Gord Zubyck was a physical education and geography teacher at NLSS/TDSS. For over 30 years he coached cross country and track and field athletes. Many of these athletes won numerous regional, provincial and national medals and team championships. Several of his athletes also competed for Canada internationally. His legacy in sport will carry on for many years to come through the generous donations to his donor advised fund which will be used for local scholarships or community sports projects.
Mary & William Elliott Fund
This named fund under the Community Fund was set up by the estate of Beryl Elliott in memory of her parents.
Denis Desjardins Colon Cancer Awareness Fund
After her father’s death from colon cancer, Vicki, his daughter, decided to establish this fund in the hopes of establishing a program to educate the public about colon cancer.
Carter Antila Memorial Skate Park Fund
Carter was tragically killed in an ATV accident. It was decided that a skate board park be built in his honour. This is a flowthough fund, which will be used to build the skate park.
Willie & Marie Gelinas Fund
This fund was set up by Rheal, Leo, Aurel and Norman Gelinas in memory of their parents Willie and Marie. The income from this fund will be directed to the local food banks through the Food Forever Fund Mr. Willie Gelinas was born in Quebec and came to Harris Township with his father. Willie held a variety of occupations. He worked on the Alaska Highway during the War. Although his formal education was limited, he managed to become a 3rd Class Stationary Engineer. Willie loved gardening; he had 3 gardens in different locations. Mrs. Marie Gelinas was a homemaker who raised 4 boys. She kept a low profile but always set a good example.
Community Cancer Care Fund
This fund, originally housed at the Temiskaming Hospital, was transferred to TTF in 2011. This fund is sponsored by the Bikers Reunion and private donations. It helps people fighting cancer with some of the extra expenses they face as they and their families deal with their illness.
Laurel & Carrie Birtch Fund
This named fund under the Community Fund was set up by Nancy Birtch in honour of her parents
Robert Pollock Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund was set up by John Pollock in memory of his brother Bob. Bob was born in Swastika Ontario and attended Haileybury Mining School from 1948-1951. He was a founding member of the Alumni Association. Bob worked for Canadian Timkin for 37 years before retiring. He was active with CIM,
AMEBC and was a proud Shriner and 60+ year member of the Masonic Order (32◦) Doric Lodge, Kirkland Lake. The income from this fund will provide a scholarship to a student (with the best grades) from Kirkland Lake, or Tri-Town area who completes the first year and proceeds into the Mining course in second year at the Haileybury Campus of Northern College. It will also provide an annual grant to the Kirkland Lake Salvation Army for its Christmas basket program.
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO MADE A GIFT TO THE FOUNDATION IN 2011
The Temiskaming Foundation gratefully acknowledges with appreciation the support of individuals and organizations listed below. Their generosity enables The Temiskaming
Foundation to help build and strengthen our community. Every donation is used to grow the endowment and improve the quality of life in our community.

TEMISKAMING
In 2011 The Temiskaming Foundation partnered with charities and professionals in
the community to participate in a LEAVE A LEGACY ™ project. A series of one
page information articles were published in the Temiskaming Speaker during the
month of May. Each week highlighted a local example of people making a
difference in the lives that follow.
LEAVE A LEGACY™ also hosted Legacy Presentations, for the public, on wills,
estate planning and reducing taxes on death, Relevant book donations to local
libraries were made as adjuncts to the presentations.
Posters were created, highlighting local individuals who had left legacies to
community groups.
LEAVE A LEGACY ™ Temiskaming Looking Ahead to 2012
In 2012 we will host a presentations on “Establishing Your Own Gift Planning Program” for small charities. We will also be creating a LEAVE A LEGACY™ Temiskaming Charities & Non Profits Opportunities booklet. This will serve as a
directory of community organizations for professional advisors to use when
consulting their clients about wills, life insurance policies and other planned giving
matters. We have received a grant from the Canadian Association of Gift Planners,
through London Life, Great West Life and Canada Life so that we can host the
presentation and create the booklet.
LEAVE A LEGACY™ is a national initiative of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners to promote interest in and create public awareness of charitable giving
through a will or an estate plan. Its national mission is to encourage all Canadians to
have a Will and to consider the personal and financial benefits of making a
charitable bequest to the charities of their choice. Our goal is to encourage
everyone to "Make a Difference in the Lives that Follow." For more information on
this project contact LEAVE A LEGACY™ at 1-800-430-9494 or check out the
