your diseases, 4who redeemsyour lie rom the Pit, who

    not always accuse, nor will

he keep his anger orever. 10He does not deal

according to our iniquities. 11For as the heavens

are high above the earth, so great is his steadastlove toward those who ear him; 1as ar as

    GEnESIS 18:115(nRSV)1The Lord appeared to

Abraham by the oaks o Mamre, as he sat at the

entrance o his tent in the heat o the day. He

looked up and saw three men standing near

him. When he saw them, he ran rom the tent

entrance to meet them, and bowed down to theground. 3He said, My lord, i I nd avor with

you, do not pass by your servant. 4Let a little

water be brought, and wash your eet, and rest

yourselves under the tree. 5Let me bring a little

bread, that you may reresh yourselves, and ater

that you may pass onsince you have come toyour servant. So they said, Do as you have

said. 6And Abraham hastened into the tent

to Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three

measures o choice four, knead it, and make

cakes. 7Abraham ran to the herd, and took a

cal, tender and good, and gave it to the servant,

who hastened to prepare it. 8Then he took curds

and milk and the cal that he

had prepared, and set it beore

them; and he stood by them

under the tree while they ate.9They said to him, Where is

your wie Sarah? And he said,

There, in the tent. 10Thenone said, I will surely return

to you in due season, and your

wie Sarah shall have a son.

And Sarah was listening at the

    tent entrance behind him. 11Now

Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to

be with Sarah ater the manner o

women. 1So Sarah laughed to hersel, saying,

Ater I have grown old, and my husband is

old, shall I have pleasure? 13The Lord said to

Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, and say, Shall

I indeed bear a child, now that I am old? 14Is

anything too wonderul or the Lord? At the

set time I will return to you, in due season, and

Sarah shall have a son. 15But Sarah denied,

saying, I did not laugh; or she was araid. He

said, Oh yes, you did laugh.

This past Wednesday, January 17th, the

House o Representatives deliberated on a bill

the House o Representatives considered leg-

tax incentives rom the oil and gas industries

and redistribute that money to alternative and

    renewable energy such as bio-uels.

The media, however, is not covering that

news. The media wants to know about Barack

    Obamas pastor. Whats goin on?

On the weekend leading up to Dr. Martin

Luther Kings birthday, the House o Repre-

sentatives passed a bill requiring the UnitedStates Secretary o Health and Human Ser-

vices to negotiate drug prices or the Medicare

program. The President who is staying the

The Presidents New Plan (more troops,

more death and more war) promises an insane

escalation in Iraq, Iran and beyond! With the

torture o Abu Ghraib, the complete destruc-

tions o cities like Fallujah and over 600,000

deaths due to collateral damage, the President

complained in his speech that there had beentoo many restrictions on the actions o the

United States Forces in the Iraq war.

Am I the only one who heard that?Whats

    goin on?

I celebrate orty years o ordained ministry

this weekend. I bask in the 40-year glow o

Gods Grace, Gods orgiveness and Gods les-

    sons about humility.

The e-mails that I have been getting this

week, the news clippings that I am being

sent and the racist blogs that are fooding theInternet make me know, however, that even as

I bask, the work ahead or the church o Jesus

Christ is just as serious and dicult today (i not

more so) as it was orty years ago when I was

    ordained during the Vietnamese War!

The President tries to rame the justicationor his insanity by using language describing the

debate in this country over the war as a great

struggle between those who believe in reedom

in moderation and extremists who kill the in-

    nocent.

The reality, however, is that the entire war in

Iraq and the larger war on terror have been

based on lies, hal-truths and distortions toserve the agenda o the United States imperial-

ism. Where is the public outcry? Where is the

    outrage? Whats goin on?

There is more ocus on what the Bears may or

may not do as they play a ootball game against

New Orleans than there is on the 3,000 home-less who are still living or displaced in the real

    lie game called New Orleans.

Those poor Black and white displaced citizens

o New Orleans (not imported team members

playing or New Orleans), who have no place to

go and no place to live because o this admin-

istrations illegal war and its billions o dollars

wasted on prosecuting that war, join with me in

    asking, Whats goin on?

Excuse me! The victims o Hurricane Katrina

are no longer on the radar screen o the media.

Only Barack, his church, his pastor and white

arrogance!I invite your sincere prayers this weekend. The

generation o ministers behind me has its work

cut out or them in some incredible and over-

    whelming ways!

In late 006, Cook County Board

    President Todd Stroger ordered all

    County Departments to cut their

budgets by 17% by the end o February.

This demand by President Stroger hascaused an uproar on both sides o the issue by

proponents and opponents o the cuts.

Proponents o the cuts state that the county

must make the cuts in order not to raise taxes

as the county is $500 million in debt. President

Stroger has acknowledged that the cuts will bepainul, yet they are necessary.

However, opponents o the cuts particularly

detail the eects it will have on poor people,

especially with regard to health care. Budget

cuts put orth by President Stroger reveal

the elimination o 1,49 Cook County jobs.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, dated

Wednesday, January 17, 007, other initial

eatures o the budget cuts include:

    Laying o about 450 o the countys

    5,575 employees, while eliminating about

    1,000 vacant jobs

More than $100 million in unidentied cuts

    that still must come

Closing 16 health clinics, including those in

schools, Phoenix, Harvey, and those on the

West Side, Woodlawn and Near South Side

    of Chicago

Obstetrics and gynecology services no longeravailable at Provident Hospital; most

    surgeries only available at Stroger Hospital;

    outpatient-only services at Provident and

    Oak Forest hospitals

$0 million less or sheri court services

    and police

$. million less or elony trial prosecutions

    11 ewer victims witness assistants

It appears that books are always balanced on

the back o the poor. Keeping people healthy

should be a priority o the city and county. I am

aware that budgets must be balanced; however,

I am also aware that ar too many times, the

poor are sacriced in order to balance budgetsand societies. The question must be asked, What

will happen to the people who utilize the clinics

that will be closing in poor neighborhoods, and

poor schools? Are they just let or dead? Just

as most o the poor people in New Orleans had

no way to get out o town, many poor peoplehave no way to get to the clinics and hospitals i

those in their neighborhoods or schools close.

    Closing community clinics and school-based

health centers will orce over 339,000 residents

to seek care rom other sources that are already

overburdened. This means children may not

receive immunizations, women will go without

prenatal care and more people will rely on

expensive emergency rooms or primary care.

I urge you to contact your County Commis-

Ive always given part o my money to the church, but I havent always been too careul with the part Ive

Boy, I have to work or my money, and I have to manage it, too. No sponging o my olks, not even or

church. At rst it was hard to make sure I had enough let or God. But Ive xed that I take Gods part

    out rst.

Ill be getting married soon, and John and I have ideas about a home and amily. Were going to haveto watch our money pretty closely, but we dont want to leave God out. So were going to have a planned

    budget that includes the church.

Money? Well, I dont have very much. I still go to school. I do go baby-sitting to get a little extra money,

but thats all. Church? Yes, o course! I cant give a whole lot, but I know God doesnt expect more than I

    can do.

Each o us has special gits that we have received rom God. We are grateul or Gods goodness to

us. We are so grateul that we want to use these gits as God would have us use them in service to

Him and our ellow humans. We dont have much money, but what we do have comes rom God,

whether it is rom an allowance or a job. We are careul how we use our money, too. We rst dedicate

a part o it to God.

We must always remember that in the sight o God, the git is not as important as the giver. The spirit

in which we give is what counts. We give rom hearts ull o love and gratitude. We give generously; we

give prayerully. Thus, our gits and our lives are acceptable unto the Lord.
