Welcome to a new season of events and programs scheduled for all of our Brandeis members and their friends. We have an exciting Opening Event on October 19 as well as a number of our Study Groups beginning in September.

Tucson may be warm right now, but we are eagerly awaiting the return of our many seasonal visitors. Our Study Group

committee has been busy since last April planning and refining our many offerings. Thanks especially to Lois Bodin and her committee, who helped develop such a wonderful selection of classes for all of us to enjoy that can enrich our lives from knowledge gained from each course offering.

Help us grow by inviting a friend to join us for a social event planned by our Membership Committee, where they can hear firsthand about the BNC. Your friends and neighbors are more than welcome to come to any of our open events and meetings. We would love to introduce the BNC to them. For membership assistance, please contact Marsha Rosenblum.

So many people work together to make our programming possible. This year, our opening luncheon on October 19 has being planned by Donna Infald. Our many thanks for the hours she has spent on this special program and luncheon. If you are interested in helping her with the day’s events, please contact her directly.

I hope all of you are planning to attend our special events and that each of you will choose several of our many programs offered this year. See you on October 19, if not at one of our Study Group sessions in September. Thanks to our Executive Board, who has met all summer working on events for all of us to enjoy.

Fondly,Lynn Cramer, President

When powerhouse vocal ist Crystal Stark performs, she doesn’t just take the stage—she owns it.

The international performer and American Idol semi-finalist got her start singing in her home town of Tucson. Her early teachers included famed soprano Faye Robinson and jazz legend Jeff Haskell. After

graduating magna cum laude from the University of Arizona with a degree in music education, she auditioned for Season 5 of the cultural phenomenon American Idol—along with 100,000 other contestants. Crystal made the top 44 and, although her Idol journey stopped there, she forged a close friendship with Season runner-up Katharine McPhee and joined McPhee’s national tour as a back-up singer.

Stark’s subsequent travels have taken her to venues throughout the United States and abroad, and she has shared the stage with such talents as trumpeter Rick Braun and guitarist Matt Marshak. While touring with Katharine McPhee, Crystal appeared on The Tonight Show, The Ellen Degeneres Show, Regis & Kelly, The Today Show, and Jimmy Kimmel Live, among others.

K hris Dodge i s a versat i le musician who has entertained audiences around the world. He is a skilled performer on both percussion and piano, has arranged hundreds of musical pieces ranging from single instrumentation to symphony orchestras, and is a prolific composer of original pieces.

Originally a pianist, Khris was lured to the percussion section early in his training and remained there through earning both a Bachelor and Masters of Percussion Performance from the University of Arizona. While there, he reignited his interest in piano and pursued additional jazz and composition studies.

Khris has music-directed and played in shows ranging from the obscure to the award-winning. The long list of productions in which he has played and/or music-directed includes: Forever Plaid; Always, Patsy Cline; Songs for a New World; Bye Bye Birdie; When Pigs Fly; 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; The Full Monty; Footloose; and Sweeney Todd. In addition, he has played with the national touring companies of Jersey Boys, Altar Boys, Peter Pan, Anything Goes, Wicked, and The Book of Mormon, as well as with New York Originals’ debut production of Scrooge in both Tucson and Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Over the last five years, Khris has worked with different production companies to develop, arrange, and music-

d i re c t f u l l - s c a l e c o nc e r t productions, including a tribute to Elvis Presley’s career that was performed with the New Orleans Symphony. He formed his own production company, Khris Dodge Entertainment, in late 2015 and debuted his first original show, To Ella with Love. His second production, Big Top Broadway, premiered in February, 2016. Performing several hundred times a year, Khris stays busy in several arenas.

This year’s Opening Fall Event is not to be missed. Fleming’s is offering filet mignon, salmon, and pasta at a price you could not purchase during their regular hours. Not only should you come, but bring friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. They will be grateful you have offered them this opportunity.

This bulletin and the next have a full invitation with RSVP form. Don’t delay in signing up, as space may be limited. This event should be a ganga—a bargain for what is offered!

Mission StatementBrandeis National Committee

Brandeis National Committee is dedicated to providing

philanthropic support to Brandeis University, a distinguished

liberal arts and research university founded by the American

Jewish community. Its membership is connected to the

university through fund-raising and through activities that

reflect the values on which the university was founded:

academic excellence, social justice, nonsectarianism, and

service to the community.

Social Justice/ Community ServiceThe Tucson chapter gives back to our community.Marilyn Lobell, our Community Service Chairman,

reminds us of the organizations we are supporting this year:The Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse is in need

of hotel toiletries and personal-care items. They also need NEW socks and underwear for children, teens, and women.

Youth On Their Own (YOTO) is an organization that supports high school graduation of homeless youth by providing financial assistance, basic human needs, and guidance. They always need teen hygiene products and school supplies.

Books From Mom is a program that gives new and gently used children’s books to women in prison so they can read to their visiting offspring and give them the books.

Brandeis is always looking for new ways to help our community. If you have a way to help or wish to make a donation, contact Marilyn Lobell, [email protected] or 615-0877, or Arlene Gray, [email protected] or 229-0006.

Nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help somebody!

Introducing Brandeis University President Ron LiebowitzBrandeis welcomes its ninth president, Ronald D. Liebowitz. The former

president of Middlebury College in Vermont, Liebowitz, 59, is a recognized leader in higher education. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the 10 best U.S. college presidents. The native New Yorker received his BA in economics and geography at Bucknell University and his doctorate in geography at Columbia University.

As he prepared for his new role, Liebowitz discussed what brought him to the university, his impressions of Brandeis and its community, and baseball.

Liebowitz said that one of the most impressive things about Brandeis is how far it’s come in only 68 years. It was founded in 1948 and yet has a remarkable legacy in the quality of the faculty and the accomplishments of its alumni. He sees his charge as president as celebrating that legacy and extending it into the future, so subsequent generations have the opportunity to study and do research at a place of this quality.

Liebowitz’s overall impression is that everyone is passionate about Brandeis. People feel very strongly about the place. It’s small enough that people feel a sense of ownership, even though it’s a world-class research university. And

people like to engage in issues very robustly, very openly, and he hopes to continue that tradition.Liebowitz feels that Brandeis is recognizable everywhere we go. People who don’t even know about his new role hear

he lives in Newton—not far from Brandeis—and they offer an opinion about Brandeis. One of the funniest examples was when someone stopped him while he was food shopping and asked, “Are you the newly appointed president of Brandeis?” and then proceeded to give him an earful. Liebowitz wanted to get to shopping, so he interjected and said, “Excuse me, from what class did you graduate?” The man responded, “Oh, I didn’t go to Brandeis.”

What appealed to Liebowitz about Brandeis University were three things. First was the mission of the institution, which combines a dedication to excellent undergraduate education with a top-flight research university. He thinks this speaks to the needs of society in the 21st century. Combining a broad-based liberal arts education with opportunities for deeper research across the liberal arts and in the sciences will produce graduates who are likely to make a difference in the world.

The second fundamental factor was the excellence of the faculty. They are remarkably dedicated, productive, and committed teachers, which really stands out and makes Liebowitz optimistic about the future.

The third item was the very reason why Brandeis exists: Its founding took place at a time when the best American universities imposed quotas that prevented Jewish students and others with a proven track record of academic excellence from joining the very-best academic institutions. When you study this history, it is really compelling to see this university founded on the basis of providing access to those previously denied, which to Liebowitz represents an important part of its mission for the future.

Liebowitz might be a Brandeisian already because he believes very strongly in those three values.Liebowitz was born in Brooklyn the year the Dodgers played there, so he grew up in a household where the Dodgers

were hated because they left beloved Ebbets Field for Los Angeles. His family became Mets fans, but he’s a contrarian, so couldn’t ever root for the same team that his family, especially his older brother and his father, were rooting for. So, as they became Mets fans, he retained his very strong Dodger allegiance, and that has stuck with him for all these years.

Bertie Levkowitz and Thomas Herz lost their first spouses to cancer more than 12 years ago. They met at Congregation Anshei Israel while saying Kaddish for their respective spouses, Jack Levkowitz and Maxine Herz.

Bertie moved to Tucson in 1964 when she and Jack married, and Jack, a Tucson native, established a dental practice in town. Bertie and Jack were the parents of two children and four grandchildren.

Tom and Maxine came to Tucson when one of their five children attended the University of Arizona. They liked Tucson because it was a college town and reminded them of Madison, Wisconsin. They were the parents to five children and 10 grandchildren.

Both Bertie and Tom share interests in Judaism, Jewish organizations, traveling, friends in Tucson and Milwaukee, and most of all, their respective families.

At the present time, Bertie’s prime interest is in Tucson’s Jewish day school, Tucson Hebrew Academy, where she is the president. Bertie and Jack were among the founders of the school. Bertie also chairs a Mitzvah Magic program from the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona.

Tom’s interests include discussion groups located in Tucson and Milwaukee that require him to stay current with national and local issues of the day. Bertie and Tom belong to the local chapter of Brandeis (Bertie’s daughter graduated from Brandeis) and to other organizations in Tucson and Milwaukee. They also belong to Skyline Country Club in Tucson and the Wisconsin Club in Milwaukee, both golf and social clubs.

In Tucson, Tom belongs to a men’s luncheon discussion group, Brandeis’ “Eat Dessert First Fellows,” and the Brandeis “Men’s Book Club.” Bertie has been active in the Brandeis Book & Author Events as well as Brandeis book clubs. Together, they led the Brandeis film Study Group “Fabulous Flicks” for many years.

Both Bertie and Tom say they would like to volunteer in the Israeli army to defend the country against extremists and to volunteer in the U.S. Army to defend the world against ISIS. However, because of projects with their respective families, these plans may have to be postponed.

In April, Patrice Brown organized a Brandeis excursion to the University of Arizona’s Worlds of Words, an incredible and unique collection of 30,000 volumes of children’s and adolescents’ literature focused on world cultures. This collection trains education majors and future teachers at the university and provides many reading opportunities for Tucson youth. It was an exciting day.

This trip shows Brandeis’ support of the community and interest in educational opportunities.

Worlds of Words is committed to providing a range of resources to encourage educators at all levels to integrate global literature into the lives of children. Its goal of integrating global literature into classrooms and libraries is to challenge children and adolescents to understand and accept those different from themselves, thus breaking cycles of oppression and prejudice between people of different cultures.

This photo of the Brandeis ladies surrounding Director Kathy Short is in its beautiful collection.

Brandeis Is Considering a Chapter CookbookThe Board of the Tucson Chapter is considering printing a cookbook

of its members’ recipes. If we go ahead with such a project, Davya Cohen will be in charge, and we will be asking men and women to donate recipes that they have tried and know work.

Because of the nature of our organization, nonsectarian but largely Jewish, we would not use recipes with pork, shellfish, or non-kosher fish or that mix meat with milk.

The cookbook may be limited as to what courses are included, but, regardless, start looking through your recipes to see what may be a good food for the cookbook. Of course, we will identify the donors of the recipes in the publication.

Brandeis Celebrates Its NamesakeOver a century ago—on June 1, 1916—Louis D. Brandeis took his seat on the United States Supreme Court, becoming

the nation’s first Jewish Associate Justice.Known as “the People’s Attorney,” Brandeis’ legacy of fighting for social justice, personal privacy, and free expression

lives on today.Atypically for the time, the confirmation process was not easy for Brandeis, who was nominated by President

Woodrow Wilson after the death of Associate Justice Joseph Lamar. As part of Brandeis’ confirmation process, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a public hearing, the first time they ever subjected a Supreme Court nominee to such scrutiny.

Students in legal studies lecturer Daniel Breen’s “Louis Brandeis: Law, Business, and Politics” class captured the confirmation process’ key moments on an interactive time line that is currently hanging inside the Shapiro Campus Center. In fact, the time line notes the Senate Judiciary Committee had delayed the confirmation process. Noting the delay, Attorney General Watt Gregory asked the chairman of the Judiciary Committee to ask President Wilson for a summary of reasons why Brandeis was nominated in the first place.

Wilson responded promptly. “No one,” the president wrote, “is more imbued to the very heart of our American ideals of justice and equality of opportunity … he is a friend of all just men and a lover of the right; and he knows more than how to talk about the right—he knows how to set it forward in the face of its enemies.”

After a months-long process, Brandeis was finally voted in by a 47-22 Senate vote. Now, Brandeis University is celebrating its namesake’s life and legacy through “Louis D. Brandeis 100: Then and

Now,” a semester-long series of events, panels, and installations throughout campus.
