March 22 thru March 24, 2013

Join Old Tucson for the 4th annual Wild West Days, an Old Tucson Signature Event, happening Friday, March 22 thru Sunday, March 24!  See special guests demonstrating the skills the cowboys needed to survive and the contributions to the western way of life made by the cultures that left their marks on the American West. This three-day festival complements Old Tucson’s focus on showcasing local History, Culture and Heritage in the western tradition.

This year, from 10:00 am to 12 noon on Saturday, March 23, The High Chaparral Reunion returns to the original ranch set. Old Tucson guests are invited to join fans, cast and crew to celebrate the ground-breaking, highly acclaimed

NBC Western The High Chaparral. Series alumni scheduled to appear include Henry Darrow (Manolito Montoya), Don Collier (Sam Butler), Kent McCray (Producer), and Susan McCray (Casting) along with some special guests.

Throughout each of the three days of the festival, scheduled performances (schedules subject to change without notice) will include:

Loop Rawlins, who will demonstrate his incredible trick roping, bull whip artistry and stunts, and fancy gun spinning that have thrilled thousands of audiences.  This young man is the consummate cowboy showman dedicated to keeping the tradition of the Wild West Show alive. From performing with Cirque Du Soleil to high-end events to rodeos, Loop Rawlins does it all.

Sourdough Slim, the accordion-playing, yodeling cowboy is back for his fourth consecutive year! His

fast-paced stage show combines comedy routines, award-winning yodeling and catchy western tunes with self-accompaniment on accordion, guitar, ukulele and harmonica. A well-traveled veteran of stages ranging from The National Cowboy Gathering to The Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, Slim transports audiences to a whimsically entertaining world where vaudevillian camp intermingles with cowboy lore to produce grins galore.

Gary Harper, noted weapons expert, will demonstrate large and small arms and the Gatling gun, one of the best known early rapid-fire weapons and a forerunner of the modern machine gun. Gary has consulted with and provided historical military weapons for a number of film and television productions including The Last Samurai, 3:10 to Yuma, Deadliest Warrior, Sons of Guns, and True Caribbean Pirates.

Cecil Manuel, noted Native American Hoop Dancer, is scheduled to perform daily. On Saturday and Sunday, students from the Ha:San Preparatory & Leadership School will share the culture of the native Tohono O’odham with guests via traditional song and dance as well as displays and foods. Marana Future Farmers of America also are scheduled to inform guests about the region’s ranching

history. Additional special guests scheduled this weekend include vintage palm reader Madame Zaronee and Buffalo Soldiers.

Listen to music and tap your toe to traditional Bluegrass music and song with high energy performances by Cadillac Mountain featuring Joel Leland, Rudy Cortese and Alvin Blaine on guitar, banjo, dobro, and mandolin. On Sunday, Tucson’s all-girl Mariachi Viva La Mujer is scheduled for a special performance!

Wild West Days also showcases Old Tucson’s full range of western entertainment including Living History presentations.  Hear the stories of everyday life of Southern Arizona pioneers presented by vintage characters covering topics including Schools on the Frontier, Sheriffs of the Old West, Travel by Stagecoach and other interesting topics.  This entertaining yet educational experience allows guests a glimpse into what life was like on the western frontier.

Wild West Days is included in the regular Old Tucson Studios Admission price of $16.95 for adults and $10.95 for children (ages 4-11).  Discounts available, details at www.OldTucson.com/visit-ots. Admission to this event is included with your Old Tucson Wagon Wheel Season Pass!

The 43rd Fourth Avenue Spring Street Fair is March 22nd – 24th and takes place between Ninth Street and University Blvd. along Fourth Avenue. Hours are 10am to 6pm all three days. Free to the public, the Fourth Avenue Street Fair brings together 400 arts and crafts booths, 35 food vendors, 2 stages, street musicians, food, jugglers, street performers, the Tucson Children’s Museum “VAN GROW” kids hands on art pavilion, face painting, balloons and tons of other fun activities and then packs them into three days of celebration.

Come for the shopping: 400 booths featuring arts and crafts that cover the spectrum from fine art to country crafts. Glass, clay, wood, clothing, metal, jewelry, pre-packaged food, all hand-made and on sale by the artist/craftsperson.

Come for the food: 35 food vendors selling an eclectic mix of good things to eat. Greek, Mexican, Thai, BBQ, fry bread, funnel cakes, chicken, and more.

Come for the music: 2 stages with something for everyone! Main Stage South with all original music (no cover music) from Tucson. Main Stage North, our community stage with steel drum, dancers and all sorts of entertainment offer by and for the community of Tucson. In addition, there will be an assortment of street performers featuring everything

from Andes to violin music.

Come for the entertainment: kids’ areas with jumping castle and mini-train, face painting, chair massages, everything and anything you can imagine!

Held twice a year, the Fourth Avenue Street Fair began 40 years ago when Fourth Avenue merchants put tables in front of their stores to attract customers before the holidays. From that beginning it has developed into one of the premier street fairs in the nation, drawing crowds of 200,000 to 400,000 and ranking as one of the top visual arts fairs in the country. The Street Fair

has also developed into a Tucson tradition and an event that has an impact on every Tucsonan in one way or another.

The Street Fair is the source of funding for 50+ non-profit groups that derive (in some cases the majority of) their income from the Fair, to the City which obtains a boost in sales taxes and a savings in services demanded, to the Fourth Avenue Merchants Association that earns the funds to keep Fourth Avenue a draw for all who live and visit Tucson. The two annual Street Fairs are Tucson’s biggest event! Please visit www.fourthavenue.org for more information.

Rx for drama: Bravo’s ‘Married to Medicine’ just what doctor ordered

kari Wells

They’re beautiful, they’re wealthy, and their lives are filled with fabulous functions and fraught with drama – but

these ladies represent a whole different breed of Atlanta wife and mom.

Now Toya Bush-Harris, Mariah Huq, Quad Webb-Lunceford, Kari Wells, Dr. Jacqueline Walters and Dr. Simone Whitmore – stars of Bravo’s newest reality series “Married to Medicine” – are eager to show the world what’s it’s really like to be part of this exclusive world.

The show, which premieres Sunday, March 24, follows the lives of these six charismatic women as they try to maintain their friendships while balancing successful careers, family obligations, charitable endeavors and active social lives in a city that demands a lot of its doctors and their spouses.

While Bush-Harris, Webb-Lunceford, Huq and Wells are all married to doctors, Whitmore and Walters have busy OB-GYN practices of their own, lending an other-side-of-the-coin perspective to some of the issues faced by their friends. But, says Wells, a beautiful British-born former model and working mom of two who is married to orthopedic surgeon Duncan Wells, viewers shouldn’t assume that being married to medicine makes life a cakewalk.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHTDirector Walter Salles (‘On the Road’) By Stan Robinson

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

“I remember going in for the audition. I did not really know what I was going in for at that time. I just read the script and said, ‘Wow! This is interesting!’ So then I went back and watched ‘Oldboy’ like a week later and was like, ‘Holy crap! Who directed this movie I just went in for?’ Sure enough it was Chan-wook Park and I was like, ‘No way!’

“I actually just had an agent

come up to me and try to get me to leave my old agent. The one good thing he said was, ‘You cannot play a [jerk] anymore.’ But being a [jerk] can be fun. We all grew up with Chevy Chase and Bill Murray. They are [jerks] and they are funny. I think that it is more about my appreciation for the humor in it than it is about actually being angry.

“We have all had that friend who gets really angry - especially

when you are really young. You know - that kid who is like a spoiled brat? You play video games with him over at his house and he throws the controller down and starts yelling and crying to his mom and you cannot help but laugh at him. There is a humor in that and, once you get to your later stages, playing that is a little comic relief.” – Lucas Till

“I was passionate about the book since the mid 70s when I read it in my native Brazil. All the forms of freedom that the characters were seeking and we were living in a very conservative society at the time enamored me. Brazil was under a military regime in the 60s and 70s so the characters in ‘On the Road’ were able to redefine a future that we were not able to grasp, and they became very emblematic to me,

the characters in the book and I never forgot the book!

“The invitation to pursue the project came in 2004 when the Sundance Film Festival viewed a film I made called ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’ was screened. There had been numerous attempts at adaptation since 1957 when the book was first published. When I first got involved, I offered to do a documentary on a possible film based on the book. So for many years I crisscrossed America on the paths taken by the characters in the book and meeting the ones who were still alive. It was a very

important process on what the film could be, and allowing Jose Rivera our screenwriter to start to adaptation and developed it over several years.

“The film is an ode to youth, an ode to the very unique friendship that ties two characters, an ode to the open road and to the

capacity of reinvention, and finally an ode to the creative process because one of the main characters is writing a book about the journey that he is actually going through. It’s one of those stories where you have so many layers that are appealing.” – Walter Salles

ADDITIONAL MOVIE OPENINGS - TUCSONThe following new releases were either screened after deadline or not made available for review.

MOVIE TWEETS!Still haven’t seen that movie that your friends have been talking about? Film Columnist Randy Montgomery recaps what you may have missed in 140 characters or less.

‘21 and Over’ A surprisingly fun romp that delivers more laughs than expected. Don’t you wish we could all party this hard? Grade: B

‘The Call’ This Halle Berry clunker gives you every reason not to like and even more reason to like it. At times, an edge of your seat thriller. Grade: B-

‘The Last Exorcism’ The first “last” one was much more entertainingly and surprisingly scary. The second “last” one did not need to be made, not seen. Grade: D

‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ Your favorite cop is back fighting bad guys. Nothing can compare to the original, but this one sure is a ton of fun. Grade: B-

‘OZ the Great and Powerful’ Oz: The Dull and Slow is more like it. Some impressive visuals and fun performances cannot save this dull prequel from Disney. Grade: C

Zanes Law, a Tucson personal injury law firm, has annually con-tributed thousands of dollars to Southern Arizona. They support various organizations that include the Salvation Army, the American Heart Association, the Ronald McDonald House, Beat Cancer Boot Camp, the Boys and Girls Club, MADD, and the Blair Charity Group.

In 2011, school budget cuts in Southern Arizona continued to grow. Zanes Law decided to take action and created a huge foot-print amongst their local network of teachers. They initiated their an-nual School Supply Giveaway that provided 100 teachers with school supplies to get their year started. Everything from flash drives and expo-markers to pens and paper

were given away the first Saturday in August for the past two years. One teacher left with a new Dell Laptop for winning a game of “Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader.” The American Red Cross blood mobile was present so that the teachers could give back as well.

“One of our core values is to be active and committed to our com-munity. We strongly believe in giving back to the community that has given us so much” states Clau-dia Zanes, CEO of Zanes Law.

The 2013 3rd Annual School Sup-ply Giveaway will be held the first week of August. For more infor-mation, please contact [email protected] or visit www.face-book.com/zaneslaw.

quench your thirst. Your Tucson firefighters will also be serving you with their own fiery homemade brews and fighting for the prize of having their beer kegged and tapped at Thunder Canyon Brewery.

like: Thunder Canyon Brewery, Borderlands Brewery, Four Peaks Brewing,1055 Brewery, Santa Fe Brewery, Sentinel Peak Brewery, Dragoon Brewery , Grand Canyon Brewery, Barrio Brewery, Big Sky Brewery, and more to come!
