From The East

B rethren,

We are passing through the dog days of summer, and the

Arizona fall is now in front of us. First, I would like to begin by

stating that there have been some officer updates. Brother Joaquin

Muñoz, our Junior Deacon, is now living in Minnesota after accepting

a teaching job in Minneapolis. Also, WB Paul Simpson will be

replacing WB Ron Allen as Ritual Advisor for the remainder of the

year.

As usual, Tucson Lodge has been busy in June, July and August. The

Grand Lodge Communication of Arizona took place here in Tucson

the first weekend of June. Most Worshipful Brother Robert Bradfield

was installed as Grand Master. Two members of Tucson Lodge were

also installed: Right Worshipful Craig Gross is our Senior Grand

Warden and WB Leigh Creighton is the Bible Bearer. Other notable

awards go to Brother Will Wilkinson who received the Distinguished

Medal of Service and to Tucson Lodge #4 as we received the Master

Architect Award. I would like to congratulate our Brothers mentioned

for their success, and I would like to thank all the members of Tucson

Lodge #4 for their participation as the Lodge was well represented.

We had another successful Table Lodge that included Most

Worshipful Brother Robert Bradfield and other members from the

Grand Lodge, several brothers from Pima #10 Prince Hall Lodge, and

brother from as far away as New Zealand! Among the degrees,

official visits, and social events we had over summer, CONTINUED

members from the lodge also had an opportunity to pay a visit to

WB Mel Norvelle who is the oldest living member of Tucson #4.

Mel was able to share his experiences with us - his involvement

during WW2, the development of the Tucson area, and his

participation in building the lodge on Allen road. He stays active

by playing Bridge and he still gets interviewed about his past.

Mel enjoys visitors so try to make some time to say hello.

September and October appear to be extremely eventful with

several Masonic events occurring throughout the weekends.

Tucson #4 is completely booked for events in October that

includes Awards Night on October 19. Be sure to keep abreast of

the events as we post them in the current and upcoming

Trestleboards.

As a final note I would like to report regarding our local youth

groups. As you may know, Bethel #25 of Job’s Daughters and

Rainbow Girls Assembly #2 hold their meetings here at the

lodge. Arizona Chapter DeMolay has their meetings at the

Marion McDaniel lodge. These Masonic Youth Groups offer

skills that cannot be learned in school, acquired in sports, and

often times are not taught by parents. In this day and age there is

no better time to support these Masonic bodies that sow the

future of Freemasonry. I ask for your support in becoming a

good steward to these groups and help educate others so that

children between the ages of 10 and 20 are aware of the benefits

to becoming a member of these organizations.

From The West

Brethren,

July and August have wound down and the time is here for the lodge to again emerge from “the dark” so that we may continue on our mission into the “Future of Freemasonry”. But, as we all know, fruitful futures are built upon the shoulders of yesterday’s giants…and there are many to acknowledge within Tucson Lodge #4…Any omissions are purely accidental as my ability to digest all of the good works done within sight and behind the scenes

are simply far too voluminous to address comprehensively...

Our Junior Warden and his support team consisting of Drew, Nick P., the youth groups, and others who simply “care enough” did a magnificent job caring for our gastronomic needs in the first half of the year, and no brother at lodge ever complained of being hungry when he left over the summer. In addition, our “Ritual Master”, Ron Allen kept us all on track, growing our knowledge and making us more proficient in our joint and individual skill sets throughout the year thus far—this dedication of time and talent deserves acknowledgment in the highest form. Furthermore, our “Thursday Crew” has maintained the lodge with great love and care so that we have a “home” in good repair that is an outward expression to our community of the pride that we take in our ancient and

honorable fraternity.

Let us not forget the works done to maintain our presence in the community through participation in the “Bikes for Books” program, “Children at Risk” support, our Rodeo Parade entry, and miscellaneous fundraisers and donations to worthy organizations and activities that we have cast our eyes, minds, and hearts upon. We need to also acknowledge the ceaseless works done by our Secretary, Treasurer, Trustees, and Master who take care of the regular business operations of the lodge in addition to their support for its spirit…their works in this capacity

are as invisible pillars that support us all as “the Lodge”.

And, remember to acknowledge those brothers who print this publication, pass on the knowledge and moral standards of our fraternity, and those who come to lodge to support their brethren and the essence of tradition. Without so many of you giving of your time, sweat, and desire to see a more honorable and loving world, every sunrise and sunset would have a little less wonder for our collective spirits to behold. Let’s now come together to resume our works in the months ahead---Thank you all and I look

forward to seeing you soon!

DEADWOOD LUNCH

Past Masters and friends gather on the last Saturday

of every month for fellowship at:

LAVERNA’S COFFEE SHOP, STARTING TIME 11:30

A.M.

Deadwood has become a social gathering and tool

for the Brothers of our Lodge. The knowledge you

pass onto some of our less informed Brethren is

priceless. You are the link from the past to the future.

The success of our lodge, and Masonry, is in your

hands.

From The South

Brethren,

Though dark for stated meetings in July and August, we Masons ate well this summer. We had family friendly Fellowship Breakfasts on the first Saturdays of July and August that were well attended. Fresh watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupes and berries were served and enjoyed. We tried out blueberry pancakes which all quickly disappeared. Laurie made chipped beef on toast to the delight of retired military Masons. I baked cornbread with green chiles in them that quickly vanished inside people who like a little spice in their lives. Brother Richard Vaughn fixed chocolate chip pancakes with sprinkles for a little girl whose eyes lit up so brightly I thought we were outside in the sunshine. MWB Jim Wadley, and Brothers Richard Vaughn, Mike Johnson, and Drew Guzman along with my Laurie and Scott, who attends the Bob Conrad and Rich Hall club meetings, helped to slice, dice and chop our ingredients

then cook your Fellowship breakfasts.

We enjoy the social satisfaction of eating together at our family friendly lodge. Eating together has been shown to be healthy for our families, too. Recent research has demonstrated that family dining increases communication with the family and skills to talk with other people in other places. Eating together models manners for children and teenagers to emulate. It expands the world view for the family members, one food at a time, showing them different cultures, new foods and exciting new recipes to relish. More healthy foods are shown to be consumed at home which are cooked with fresh vegetables, fruits, dairy products and fiber, all filled with vital Vitamin A and C, and better quality proteins. Eating together at home also promotes self-sufficiency and independence, prevents self-destructive behaviors like drug use and excessive drinking, it improves children’s school grades and actually saves money when not

eating out.

For degree and practice refreshments Laurie and I made meatball sandwiches, pecan and walnut brownies with vanilla bean ice cream over it. I cooked special onion, mushroom, ham and cheese quiche pies for our Brothers for degree practice from the extra Fellowship Breakfast

ingredients.

The September stated meeting dinner will be on September 7, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. At that dinner we will serve salad, smothered steak over rice, carrots and cornbread. Coffee and tea will follow with a dessert that our superstar cook, Ginny Fortson, plans to surprise and please our palates. Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm followed by the September stated lodge meeting at 7 pm. The Fellowship breakfast will be held on September 3rd from 7-10 am with the usual excellent eggs and omelets, bacon and other fresh food delights made with brotherly love for breakfast. Please join us for food, fun and fellowship. Remember to make your reservations before Monday, September 5th to ensure there will be enough prepared to

feed you too. I recognize the privilege you provide me to serve as your Junior Warden. I am very grateful and reiterate I could not do this job without help from so many

others. Thank you all of you for support and participation!

The Masonic Funeral

A new Worshipful Master in a small town spent the first few days of his term making personal visits to each of the members, inviting them to come to his first Lodge meeting and enjoy the fellowship and brother-hood. The following Thursday the Lodge was all but empty. Accordingly, the Worshipful Master placed a notice in the local newspapers, stating that, because the Lodge was dead, it was everyone's duty to give it a decent Masonic burial. The funeral would be held the follow-ing Monday afternoon, the notice said. Morbidly curious, a large crowd turned out for the "funeral." In front of the Altar, they saw a closed cof-fin, smothered in flowers. After the Chaplain delivered the eulogy, he opened the coffin and invited his Breth-ren to come forward and pay their final respects to their dead Lodge. Filled with curiosity as to what would represent the corpse of a "dead Lodge," all the Brethren eagerly lined up to look in the coffin. Each "mourner" peeped into the coffin then quickly turned away with a guilty, sheepish look. In the coffin, tilted at the correct angle, was a large mirror. Remember the obligation we all took my brethren. At-tend and support your Lodge! Let us not forget our solemn commitment to the Craft.
