Tuesday 29 October Visit to the Gippsland Grammar Early Learning

Centre

Lisa Burgess welcomes members to the Early Learning Centre

Notes on the meeting (from Adrian)

Our newest member, Lisa Burgess, is the Head of Gippsland Grammar Early

Learning Centre and she invited the Rotarians and their spouses to come and

visit the Centre to find out for ourselves how education has changed since we,

and even our children, went to school.

Lisa took us around the classrooms and the other facilities of the school and informed us that she is in charge of 85 children aged 3 to 5 years, enrolled in the Sale and Bairnsdale campuses. Even though the centre is part of Gippsland Grammar, it has to abide by very strict regulations for the care and teaching of pre-school children. One of these is the ratio of staff to children which

regulations state must be no less than 1 staff member for 11 children. At Lisa’s centre, this is 1 to 10. Lisa pointed out that childcare is very expensive and consequently parents find that the care and teaching at the Early Learning Centre is an affordable alternative. When the kids graduate from the centre, some leave to attend other schools but many stay on and continue to Year 12 at Gippsland Grammar. Lisa will be seeing her first pupils graduating from Year 12 at the end of this year. The children are well prepared to go on to primary school and have already learnt some Japanese, among other subjects. They have a sister school in Japan.

Following the tour of the Early Learning Centre, we were introduced to Jai van Berkel who is Head of the Junior School for the Sale Campus. Jai explained that the class rooms are nothing like the ones we knew in our school days. They are designed to be flexible learning facilities. There are no chalk-boards, no teacher’s desk and the kids sit on flexible chairs, allowing them to gently rock which helps with concentration. The purpose of the lack of teacher’s facilities requires the teachers to be active. Jai said teachers do have electronic and digital aids but that the kids are more adept at their use than the teachers. This has resulted in recognising that teachers need a technology supervisor to help them come to terms with all the new equipment.

The focus at the Junior School is on:

• Teaching and learning

• Wellbeing

• Pedagogy (the principles, practice, or profession of teaching) Subjects include:

• English, Maths, Science, etc.

• Wellbeing - mindfulness, personal development

exception of farmers who must show their PIC. The person on the gate must tick the box on the paperwork to indicate he/she has seen the PIC and must record the surname of the farmer.

roots symbolise connection; the branches are the families and the leaves are the children, reaching out for knowledge.

Philip announced that the AGM will be on Tuesday 19 November and would like suggestions and nominations for Board positions and Office Bearers. Jeanette reminded everyone that the combined meeting with the Rotary Club of Yarram is going ahead and that members from the Maffra Club will also be coming. Yarram would like an indication of numbers by Wednesday 6 November although firm numbers will not be necessary until the end of November. Please let Jeanette know by email as soon as possible how many are going from your family.

If you would like to enter a team of 4, let Adrian know. If you would like to play but haven’t got a team, contact Adrian by email ([email protected] ) and he’ll match you up with other players. Hopefully Rotary will be able to field several teams.

Rotary Club of Sale - Sale Show Gate Keeper’s

Instructions 2019

EVERYBODY PAYS FOR ENTRY UNLESS THEY HAVE A VALID

TICKET. See ticket board for examples of valid tickets. Trade pass wrist

bands must be worn to be valid.

PATRONS WITH PREPAID SHOW TICKETS must have tickets clipped

by gatekeepers on Friday and on Saturday ticket is to be retained by

gatekeepers. These actions ensure that the tickets are used only once each day.

The small tear off portion of Show Ticket admits one adult only. Ticket

complete admits two adults and four children under 15. If two adults present

then both portions of ticket are clipped.

ADMIT ONE TICKETS are used to facilitate entry control at McGhee St and

the pedestrian gate when required.

GREYHOUND CLUB PATRONS are to be directed to enter via the gate in

Page 8: Tuesday 29 October - Rotary Club of Salerotaryclubofsale.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Bulletin-Volume-91-18.pdfKukun Kalak – the tree represents a place of gathering and learning

Dawson St next to the railway line, otherwise they pay to enter like everyone

else.

SHOW TICKETS are to be sold, after clipping, on Friday only. Families may

enter at show ticket rate on Saturday but no show ticket is to be issued. All

tickets presented on Saturday are to be retained by gatekeepers.

PENSIONER means age, service or disability pensioners only.

PASSOUTS stamps may be given at any time both days.

PROBLEMS OR DISPUTES should be referred to the gate supervisors Keith

Miller (by radio or telephone 0432 360 442) and Neil Brewer by radio or when

he visits your ticket box. Failing that the secretary may be contacted on

51442603. The pre-set radio channel is for gatekeepers only and should be

monitored at all times, not just for disputes and instructions but also for help

with safety and emergency issues that may arise.

SECURITY PERSONELL will be on duty at each gate from about 5pm on

Friday to assist with crowd control and to check bags for alcohol, so work with

them as a team.

FREE ENTRY FOR FARMERS again this year will be managed by

identifying Property Identification Code (PIC) tags produced by farmers. The

tag number, the postcode and whether a family or single person presents for

entry are to be entered on the tally sheet, to facilitate reimbursement to the

Show Society. Unless a PIC is produced free entry is to be denied. When things

are hectic late on Friday, the necessity to write pick number down is relaxed

provided the box is ticked acknowledging sighting of PIC.

Friday 1 November and Saturday 2 November - Sale Show Gates

Saturday 2 November – Under the Stars free concert, Rotary

selling cold drinks and ice cream

Tuesday 5th November – no meeting, Public Holiday
